Methane
Question: methane ? Im making a bio digester but in my digesting tank there is a little oxygen. Will that wreck my digester or should i get all oxygen out, ive tried its really hard
Answer: There should not be any oxygen present. Either you have to get rid of it as much as possible or you have to have a restart.
Vacuuming out Oxygen from a bio-digester is a troublesome job, but if you don't get rid of O2, the final outcome would not be satisfactory.
Find some body around who has some experience about making the bio-digester.
Question: How is methane recycled in the environment? Methane has been continually pumped into the atmosphere over the years as organims get rid of wastes. Will it continue to build up even more and more in years to come or is there some natural process that breaks it down? There isn't a lot of methane in the atmosphere which leads me to believe something lowers the amount of it. I know humans burn some methane, but are there any natural processes that decrease the amount of methane in the air?
Answer: Methane breaks down into water and carbon dioxide very shortly after is generated. It does not accumulate in our atmosphere due to the large amount of Oxygen present
Question: What is the mole ratio of air to methane gas in the combustion of Methane? A furnace that provides heat by buring methane gas (CH) must have the correct mixture of air and fuel to operate effeciently. What is the mole ratio of air to methane gas in
the combustion of methane? Hint Air is 20% oxygen.
Answer: Methane = CH4
CH4 + 2 O2 --> CO2 + 2H2O
molar ratio of O2 to CH4 = 2 to 1
molar ratio of air to CH4 = 10 to 1
Question: Can methane from human waste be collected and used as an energy source? Dairy farms use methane from their cows to power their machines. Is it possible to retro-fit a water treatment facility with equipment for the purpose of collecting methane from human waste? If so, why hasn't this already happened?
Answer: well, yes and no, do humans produce the energy source methane, yes. It is in such low amounts that it wouldn't be worth it, we would spend more energy in the power burning plant, than we would get out of methane. My family owns a dairy farm and the reason we can do this is because, we are sold a crude methan burner, that just powers the warehouse where we keep the cows. that is just like 50 florescent light bulbs. Not a washing machien, t.v., microwave, ect. GOOD IDEA THOUGH KEEP THINKING!!
Question: What causes the earth to create methane gas? I saw a show that said the ocean floor is already emitting methane gas, which goes up through the water as tiny bubbles until they reach the surface and release the methane into the atmosphere. But what makes the methane gas in the first place?
Answer: **Livestock animals naturally produce methane as part of their digestive process, belching it while chewing cud and excreting it in their waste. According to the Worldwatch Institute, about 15 to 20 percent of global methane emissions come from livestock. And the rate it is increasing, is unbelievable. Now if we could just harness cow farts, and get our vehicles to run off that, we'd be set!..lol
Question: How do people contribute to increasing methane and water vapor? i have questions on the greenhouse gases and i know how CO2 is increased but i have know idea how methane and water vapor do. anyone know?
Answer: Methane: We consume large quantities of beef. A cow releases between 100-500 liters of methane per day.
Water Vapor: Irrigation of crops and grasses allows for increased evaporation.
Question: How to determine the diameter of methane molecules or molecules? Startled with the question like this when only given the bong length and the angle of the bond for methane. I never come across this kind of question which I find it very hard. Any help on this would be much appreciated.
Answer: Yo also need to know the van der Waals radius of H. Then it's just 3-D geometry. drawings or even handling models will help.
Question: How much methane does a Bunsen burner use? I'm a science teacher and my ecology club are attempting to make our own methane via home-made biogas generators. I was wondering if we could make enough to fuel a Bunsen burner?
Answer: We bought a small portable gas meter and placed it between the gas tap and the bunsen burner and used it to heat water in a calorimeter for a set time. We were surprised at the small volume - though I can't remember exactly what it was - that a bunsen used per minute.
PS unsurprisingly it gave a dreadfully low value for the enthalpy combustion of methane ... but it was a good experiment for discussing errors!
Question: What are the potential feedback implications of global warming with respect to these methane sources? Methane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) thought to be abundant in the deep ocean and in permafrost. Compare the global warming potential of methane to other GHG’s. What are the potential feedback implications of global warming with respect to these methane sources?
Answer: Carbon dioxide is also a big problem.
Question: What is the treatment for methane gas poisoning? In Wisconsin, a mother of three cannot get treatment for herself and her children. She called her mom (3/30/07) to let her know she called the non-emergency number to a local fire department and explained what was happening. Someone from the fire department went to the home to inspect the basement and discovered raw sewage and the presence of methane gas. The young mother has gone to a local hospital twice for help for her and her children. She called the poison control center, and searched the Internet and found a note from a man asking the same question---years ago. She could not believe no one responded. She and her children are out of the house, and staying with family. Nothing has been reported about the two older children; but, she and her 1-year old daughter are showing signs of methane gas poisoning.
Answer: conscious: oxygen by nasal cannula or lots of fresh air
unconscious: intubated and 100% oxygen by blower with a rate of 18-20
Question: What is the reaction involved in lighting methane bubbles on fire? My chemistry teacher wants me to write the balanced equation of an experiment we did the other day. We mixed soap and water, and made bubbles using the methane hose. Then, we picked up the bubbles and lit them on fire using a match.
Answer: I do this, you can do it in your hands (make sure you wet them first) and if you're bald on your head.
You put methane gas through soapy water and then ignite. The methane reacts with oxygen to make carbon dioxide and water, so your reaction is:
CH4 (g) + 2O2(g) --> CO2 (g) + 2H2O (g)
Question: What is the fastest way to make methane mechanically? Would heat, water, chemicals excelerate gas production?
Do you think a self producing methane car could be possable?
Yes I think its a funny idea too.
Here comes chevrolet's beanmobile you can smell the saving's!
Answer: The fastest way of making methane is pyrolysis of Cow Dung.
I know it's very odd but this is the low cost and fastest and also the easiest way to prepare methane.
To do it take some amount of cow dung in a dry flask or some container and suck all the air out of it by a suction pump or a vacuum cleaner but be carefull not to suck out the dung itself.
Now put a cork on the flask and heat it.
After sometime keep it to cool and you will get methane in the vacant space of the Flask.
Question: What mass of methane must be burned in order to liberate 12 880 kj of heat? All i know is that I need to figure out the Mass of Methane that burnes to liberate 12 880 kj of heat. Please explain with answer.
Answer: 1 mole of Methane liberates 891 kJ of heat
]=> Number of moles combusted = 12880/891 = 14.46 mol
Mass = 14.46 * 16 = 231.36 g
Question: What are the products of the combustion of equal quantities of methane and oxygen? When methane combusts in ample oxygen, the products are carbon dioxide and water. If there is less oxygen, then carbon monoxide and water are produced. But if equal quantities of methane and oxygen combust, what are the products? Is the reaction:
a) CH4 + O2 --> C + 2H2O
b) CH4 + O2 --> CO + H2O + H2
c) CH4 + O2 --> CO2 + 2H2
d) None of the above
Answer: The question answers it.
If equal volumes then there is a deficiency of O2. Write out the balanced equation for complete combustion, and that will be clear
So equal amounts means that the question tells you it is reaction b)
Question: What are the steps in producing home made methane gas? Our topic in our Investigatory project will revolve on the concept of methane gas as alternative fuel. Mainly we'll just construct the anaerobic digester, a very simple one. The gas produced will just be used for a single gas range, one open flame. It would really help if the materials going to be used is easy to acquire and is readily available in the market. Thank you very much!
Answer: To produce methane, there are 3 steps: step 1, eat some beens, step 2, digest, step 3, let wind break!
Question: How do you convert mass of methane to moles of water vapor? The question is: Methane, the main constituent of natural gas, is burned. How many moles of water vapor are produced from 4.00 g of methane?
The answer is 0.498mol of H20 but I don't know how to get that.
I understand how to do moles to mass but I can't seem to get it this way. Please help me.
Answer: First thing to do is write out the balanced chemical equation. With that in front of you, you can see how many moles of methane correspond to how many moles of water vapor. Then it's easy to convert:
grams of methane-->
moles of methane-->
moles of water vapor
