Monounsaturated
Question: What is the difference between polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat? I need to increase my intake of good fats daily and the easiest options were to eat almond or walnuts. The thing is one has a higher level of polyunsaturated fats and the other is high in monounsaturated fats and i have no idea wht the difference is and which i should be eating.
Answer: Here are some answers to your questions.
I'm pretty clueless about them myself but I did put them in the yahoo search bar to get to this topic and this other one:

Question: are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat the same as omega 3 and 6? I like taking a essential fatty acid supplement for health and I work out. From what I read omega3 is polyunsaturated and omega6 is monounsaturated? I know this is a deep question that probly no one knows but if I just bought a bottle of canola oil with poly and mono wouldnt it be the same thing as spending big $ on a product that claims it has omega3 and omega6?
Answer: If something contains Polyunsaturated fat, then there will be Omega 6 and 3 present.
In the typical western diet, there is an imbalance. People generally need to make sure they are getting adequate Omega 3 ;-)
Question: What is monounsaturated fat and what foods can I find it in? Im dieting and someone said monounsaturated fat helps flatten your tummy but I have no clue which foods its in.
Answer: Monounsaturated fats are very good for you and your heart especially. They are found in:
Olive oil/olives
Almonds
Pistachios
Almond butter
Hazelnuts
Pecans
Halibut
Salmon
Question: Is canola or olive oil good for you, seeing they are high in monounsaturated fats? Writing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the researchers led by Dr Rachel Stolzenberg-Solomon, said: "We observed positive associations between pancreatic cancer and intakes of total, saturated, and monounsaturated fat overall, particularly from red meat and dairy food sources.
Answer: Both of these fats are good for health within reason...moderation!
They are best used in things like salad dressing mix or light cooking. You need to realize that with both of these fats, once they have been raised to a particular temperature as in frying or cooking, they become hydrogenated through the heating process.
Many people are reverting back to butter in general use because butter turns out to be healthier than margarine and is an excellent source of vitamin A.
Most margarines turn out to be hydrogenated or trans fats. With the start of canola rape oil seed growing, the use of margarine became a governmental political promotion in the US and Canada along with the put down of butter.
Guess which one wins out today?...even in comparing Basel. We should be looking at a land of milk an honey...not a land of processed vegetable oils and chemically preserved fruit jams.
Me! :- )
Question: Does soybean oil have monounsaturated fat in it? I know that olive oil, avocados, olives, and nuts are full of monounsaturated fat. Is soybean oil a good source of monounsaturated fat, too?
Answer: Soybean oil contains 24% monounsaturated fats and 61% polyunsaturated fats.
Question: What is a polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acid? Which is considered to be beneficial for humans ? Molecular Level Of Genetics: Macromolecules
What is a polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acid? Which is considered to be beneficial for humans and why?
I am not asking fr anyone to DO my homework, but it is a good wat to check my answers and help me. I am doing Bio 12 thru correspondese and appreciate the help
Answer: monounsaturated fatty acids have one double bond in the hydrophobic chain while polyunsaturated fatty acids have more than one. keep in mind as a rule of thumb that "saturated" means the carbons are completely bonded with hydrogens, hence the word saturated, like a sponge saturated with water. so unsaturated is obviously the opposite.
polyunsaturated fatty acids are beneficial for humans because they do not cause heart disease and hardening of the arteries. omega fatty acids are especially good. this is off the top of my head and i have a degree in biological sciences. if i stopped to think more about it i could come up with a lot more info.
hope this primer helps.
Question: What is the difference between monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat? Is one better than the other?
Answer: Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids are two types of unsaturated fatty acids. Unsaturated fats have at least one unsaturated bond — that is, at least one place that hydrogen can be added to the molecule. They're often found in liquid oils of vegetable origin.
Polyunsaturated oils are liquid at room temperature and in the refrigerator. They easily combine with oxygen in the air to become rancid. Common sources of polyunsaturated fats are listed in the table below.
Monounsaturated oils are liquid at room temperature but start to solidify at refrigerator temperatures. See the table below for sources.
Polyunsaturated fats tend to help your body get rid of newly formed cholesterol. Thus, they keep the blood cholesterol level down and reduce cholesterol deposits in artery walls. Recent research has shown that monounsaturated fats may also help reduce blood cholesterol as long as the diet is very low in saturated fat.
Both types of unsaturated fats may help lower your blood cholesterol level when used in place of saturated fats in your diet. But you should be moderate in eating all types of fat, because fats contain more than twice the calories of either protein or carbohydrate.
Question: Is saturated fat "good for you" now? What about polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats then? With the big deal being made of trans fats, I've gotten confused about the other fats. Saturated fat used to be the "bad fat" to stay away from, but now trans fat is the "bad fat". Is saturated fat considered "good for you" now? And I've never heard anything about whether polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are good or bad for you. Does anyone out there know?
Answer: Here you can see what the different fats are.
Question: What canned food has a good source of omega 3 or monounsaturated fat? A food that is nonperishable or canned.
Answer: water packed tuna or salmon
Question: Does monounsaturated fat make you gain fat? I have heard of monounsaturated fats as being "good" fats, but I can't help but wonder if they add to your fat in your body? Like, if you eat a lot of it, will it make you gain body fat?
Answer: A food source, in and of itself, does not make us gain fat. Excess calories and lack of exercise make use fat. If you have already eating your daily caloric needs, even if you eat 5 healthy fruits, those fruits will put you over the edge and make you store fat.
Question: What is a saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fat(s)? With concern toward fats, what does saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated mean?
Why are they bad for your health?
Answer: well saturated fats are coated end to end with hydrogen bonds. those hydrocarbons arent good for ya. (saturated fat image here) http://www.kungchido.com/f1_files/image002.jpg
unsaturated fats
http://biology.clc.uc.edu/Courses/bio104/lipids.htm
" Because some of the carbons share double bonds, they’re not bonded to as many hydrogens as they could if they weren’t double bonded to each other. Therefore these oils are called unsaturated fats. Because of the kinks in the hydrocarbon tails, unsaturated fats can’t pack as closely together, making them liquid at room temperature"
because of this, they are more easily metabolized.
im not a super-expert on fats at the chemical level but i hope this helps.
Question: Whats the difference between monounsaturated and polyunsaturated vegetable oils? I kinda need to know now..
for homework :(

Answer: In biochemistry and nutrition, monounsaturated fats are fatty acids that have a single double bond in the fatty acid chain and all the carbon atoms in the chain are single-bonded. By contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids have more than one double bond.
Fatty acids are long-chained molecules having a methyl group at one end and a carboxylic acid group at the other end. Fatty acid fluidity increases with increasing number of double bonds. Therefore, monounsaturated fatty acids have a higher melting temperature than polyunsaturated fatty acids but lower than saturated fatty acids. Monounsaturated fatty acids are liquids at room temperature and semisolid or solid when refrigerated.
Although polyunsaturated fats protect against cardiovascular disease by providing more membrane fluidity than monounsaturated fats, they are more vulnerable to lipid peroxidation (rancidity). On the other hand, some monounsaturated fatty acids (in the same way as saturated fats) promote insulin resistance, whereas polyunsaturated fatty acids are protective against insulin resistance. In direct contrast to this, the large scale KANWU study found that neither dietary monounsaturated or supplemented polyunsaturated fats (in the form of fish oil) affected insulin sensitivity, while increased consumption of saturated fat induced a significant decrease in this parameter.
Question: Are monounsaturated fats essential to human health? Does the human diet require monounsaturated fats?
Also what about polyunsaturated fats? Are those considered essential?
Answer: yes, monounsaturated are the healthiest because it lowers bad ccholesteroland raises good ccholesterol Also it is essential for the human brain and will help on loosing weight.
Question: How do eating monounsaturated fatty acids help reduce visceral fat?
Answer: in moderation yes, they balance all the reproduction hormones(which does influence the metabolism) and the body`s endocrine system to maximize burning of excess fat...you still have to workout often in moderation and calorie shift your meals
Question: What's the relationship between omega 3,6,9 and polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fats? Do they all occur in each other or do some fats have more omegas or is it the food the fats occur in that matters?
I'm totally confused.
Answer: All fats are equally high in calories.containing nine calories per gram.
Your fat consumption shoutd not exceed 25–35 percent of the total calories you eat each day.
The Omega Oils 3 - 6 - 9 are essential for cardio-vascular health, normal development and health. They are found plentifully in Hemp Seed (No you cannot get high from it. It is a totally different species of the plant) in Flax Seed.
From a chemical standpoint, polyunsaturated fats are fats that have more than one double-bonded (unsaturated) carbon in the molecule. Polyunsaturated fats are typically liquid at room temperature and when chilled such as coconut oil. Polyunsaturated fats can have a beneficial effect on your health when eaten in moderation or when used to replace saturated fats or trans fats. Polyunsaturated fats can help reduce the cholesterol levels in your blood and lower your risk of heart disease. They also include essential fats that your body needs but can’t produce itself – such as omega-6 and omega-3. You must get essential fats through your food food.as the body does not provide its own..
When eaten in moderation polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats are beneficial for your health. Most foods contain a combination of fats. Foods high in polyunsaturated fat include a number of vegetable oils, including soybean oil, corn oil and safflower oil. Coconut Oil and Palm Oil are fine in moderation. Butter is better than margarine which is chemically one molecule removed from plastic. Other sources of good fats include some nuts and seeds -- such as almond, walnut, peanut, sesame and sunflower seeds.
Trans Fats are to be avoided.
