Nutrient
Question: What are the most effective ways to measure nutrient cycling in wetlands? I'm working on a restoration monitoring plan for a class and am trying to figure out which nutrient cycling parameters to measure to estimate nutrient cycling. I'm most interested in C, P, and N. The wetland is in the Pacific NW. If anyone can lead me to some good academic papers on this topic that would be great....
Answer: There are many ways to go about that study. from sampling pore water to real time monitoring etc.
there are lots of papers on the subject. If you are at a university, I would hit the library and use The Web of Science search engine and look up nutrient cycling in wetlands.
I have included the USGS website below. It may have the info you need in there publications list.
good luck! I love wetlands!
Question: What kind of a lake is nutrient rich and tends to have large populations of algae? What kind of a lake is nutrient rich and tends to have large populations of algae?
Answer: Perhaps you're talking about "Eutrophication?"
Excess phosphorus & nitrogen from substances like detergents, or sewage runoff may cause this.

Question: What nutrient medium should I buy for African Violet plant tissue culture? I'm trying to do a plant tissue culture from home and the options for nutrient mediums on the Carolina biology website are overwhelming. My procedures recommend a premixed powder, but I really don't know what I'm looking for.
Thank you!
Answer: This is the basic MS media, use gelrite instead of agar You might see in the liuetrature what pH is optimal for african violets. Good luck!

Question: My apartment smells like nutrient agar. Any ideas what the smell is coming from? I moved into my apartment about 2 weeks ago, and this afternoon, I began getting wafts of this unpleasant smell. It smells identical to nutrient agar. I cannot pinpoint a source of the smell. Are you aware of anything that smells like nutrient agar?
Answer: Mold or other fungal decay. Start looking for sites of excess moisture.
Question: How might the introduction of a limiting nutrient in a pond affect the carrying capacity of that pond? Please answer this question:
How might the introduction of a limiting nutrient in a pond affect the carrying capacity of that pond?
Thanks in advance! :)
Vanessa.
Answer: if you add the limiting nutrient the carrying capacity will be raised. depending on how much is added it may or may not be the limiting nutrient after-wards.
Question: What are some nutrient rich foods to feed my picky toddlers? Okay I have a 1 and an almost 3 year old. They are both extermely picky eaters and are way below weight they should be. I am trying to come up with some ideas on some nutrient rich foods that I can concentrate on to sneak in the nutrition I need... I had a nurse tell me that peanut butter was very good and to add it to smoothies ect... what other simple foods are high in nutrition that I can chop and blend into thier food? Any other suggestions for picky eaters?
Answer: you should try recipes from the book deceptively delicious. it teaches you how to puree veggies and sneak them into kids' favorite foods.
Question: What can I use in an aerogarden to replace the nutrient tablets? I have the master gardeners kit, but have now run out of nutrient tablets. Can anyone suggest what to use (baby bio, miracle gro etc) that will allow the plants to thrive and not damage the pumps of the aerogarden.
Thanks!
Answer: I just found the hydroponics site below that gives instructions on how to do your own nutrients. Haven't tried it yet, but they seem to know what they're talking about. Rather a bit more difficult than dropping the overpriced but easy tablets in, unfortunately.
Question: What are the three main nutrient substances people must ingest? Homework help please!
What are the three main nutrient substances people must ingest?
Answer: Protein, carbohydrates, fat
Question: What is the most important nutrient in quickbreads. How does it help our body? I just wanted to know. I mean i want to know how the nutrient helps the body.
Answer: The germ of the wheat if you make whole wheat bread. The bran is also good but is for the fiber moreso than the nutrition.
Otherwise, it would be the proteins that form Gluten in white bread (much less nutritious)
-----edit----- The rest of my post I copied from a site explaining the germ
Wheat germ is a part of the wheat kernel. The germ is only a very small part of the kernel, approximately 2 ½ percent in total. The word germ does not have anything to do with bacteria; it simply refers to germination. The germ is the reproductive part that germinates and forms the wheat grass.
Wheat germ is very high in protein. It contains around 28 percent protein and has more protein than can be found in most meat products. The human body needs protein in order to repair tissue damage and to help minerals and nutrients reach our cells.
The amount of nutrients that are contained within wheat germ seems endless. It contains more potassium and iron than any other food source. Also found in great quantities are riboflavin, calcium, zinc magnesium and vitamins A, B1 and B3. Vitamins B1 and 3 are very important to maintain energy levels and maintain healthy muscles, organs, hair and skin.
Another important vitamin found in wheat germ is vitamin E. Vitamin E is a very important antioxidant. It is helpful in preventing the body's aging process and also to prevent heart disease. Vitamin E also helps to prevent blood clots and is needed to strengthen the body’s immune system.
Wheat germ has been found to be very beneficial in order to keep the body in tip top condition. It is used by athletes in their diet to improve cardiovascular function and improve endurance levels. Body builders will also add wheat germ to their diets in order to bulk up and maintain the nutritional levels they need to perform.
Other ingredients in quick breads like sugar, salt, baking powder would certainly not qualify. If you made your quickbread using bananas or zucchini, that would certainly be a healthy ingredient too.
Question: Do you have to use a nutrient bag to hatch new Triops? I was wondering if the nutrient bags is needed to hatch more baby Triops,? I used the last two that came with the deluxe kit.
I'll rate, as I would like to know.
Answer: Yes, you need some sort of nutrients in the water, but you can easily make your own nutrient bags at home. Check out mytriops.com for instructions as well as lots of other articles and information.
Question: Why can equal amounts of a nutrient have different daily value percentages? I don't totally understand the daily value system, but I was looking at some food wrappers and found that in different products the same amount (number of grams) of a nutrient might equal different daily value percentages. For example, in two different products there were 2 grams of dietary fiber each. One package claimed that this was 8% DV and the other claimed it was 6% DV. Please clear my confusion!
Answer: Everybody has their own view of how much the average person should get of different nutrients each day, so that may be the source of this.
Also, they might be basing it on different calorie diets (most base it on 2,000 cals, but it could be different).
Question: what is soil nutrient content and how can it be improved? what is soil nutrient content, how can it be improved and how does it differ from nutrient availability?
Answer: Nutrient content is the amount of the particular chemicals that plants use (N, P, K, S, Fe, etc.. ) This can be determined by a soil nutrient analysis. It can be improved by adding fertilizer with the appropriate ingredients.
Nutrient availability has to do with how well a plant can uptake said nutrients.. issues like soil pH and carbon/nitrogen ratio can affect availability.
This sounds like question from a horticulture quiz.. hope this helps.
Question: What nutrient deficiency cause white "dots" on the middle of your finger nails? I have a few white "dots" as I call them, on a few of my finger nails. I thought I learned in Nutrition class that was a deficiency of a nutrient.. Does anyone know?
Answer: it is a deficiency in Zinc
but can be from bruiseding
your finger nails.
Question: What is the total nutrient density of lettuce? I did a search but all I could find were breakdowns of the various nutrients. Does anyone know the overall nutrient density?
Answer: You can find the nutrient breakdown of a lot of foods here: http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/vegetables-and-vegetable-products/2475/2
Question: What's an interesting way to start writing an essay about a nutrient? I'm in grade 9 and I'm writing an essay about the nutrient Iodine.
whats a good way to start?
Answer: How about:
If you were unfortunate enough to live in a remote area far away from the sea you may be made very aware of the importance of iodine - developmental delay and other health problems. Iodine is the the single cause of mental retardation which sadly preventable if everyone has the right diet. Iodine is found in........

If anyone could shed some light on this for me and assist me in coming up with ideas for a good experiment for this, in addition to assisting me with the above outlined sections, I would greatly appreciate it!
I will give a good amount of points to the best answer, so please be as thorough and detailed as possible when responding!
Answer: You have a lot of leeway with this, since you can choose whatever nutrient you want. Some nutrients, like water, are easy to track since they can be measured very well in the environment, and you automatically have a good idea of how much water each organism holds. I would first research different types of nutrients before you start this project.
Good luck!
