Question: Nutrition Information? On the nutrition info on a food package, when it says "calories from fat" it is just saying how many of the total calories are from fat right? That number isn't added to the total calories or anything?
And are calories from fat worse from calories from sugar, carbohydrates, and protein? if so, what is the "best" type of calorie?
Answer: Calories from fat is the portion of the calories (portion calories) that are accountable to the total fat in the product. (Should usually be about the grams of fat x 9).
You want a mix of calories between good carbs, good fats, and protein. A good mix will keep you feeling fuller longer and you end up eating less calories if there is a balance between protein, fat, and fiber.
Sugar is ok in moderation if it's in a natural form - say an apple (it has fiber if you eat the skin, but it also has fructose - sugar that occurs in fruit) - or milk (lactose). You may notice though that the sugar content in fat-free milk is higher than 1% milk.
good fat = poly/mono unsaturated (nuts, olive oil, avoacados, olives)
Hope that helps.

Question: How do you know if the nutrition information on the back of the food you purchase is accurate? I recently bought some groceries, and i bought some muscle milk protein for my son, and i looked at the nutrition information and it said it had 32 grams of protein per 2 cups, is just a estimation or a accurate amount of grams of protein per 2 cups?
Answer: It is required, by the government, that the manufactures are truthful when calculating the calories, sugar, etc. So when they are found out they will go to jail.

Question: Nutrition information for food cooked on a George Foreman grill? I like to cook high-fat meats such as sausage on my George Foreman grill because it seems to get rid of so much fat. I am interested in finding out just how well my little grill works! I can see the fat that drains out, but I can't seem to find any solid numbers! Where can I find nutrition information for food cooked on a George Foreman grill?
Answer: I don't know if any numbers actually exist because it'll vary by the meat, how lean the cut was, how much fat is in it to start with, etc, etc.
I think the infomercials mentioned some range of a percent of fat reduction, but it was a pretty wide range if I recall correctly.
However, I've seen assays done on the grills like this, and it turns out that most of the drippings that come off the grill are just water. Yes, there is a good amount of fat coming off, but there's a lot more water so it looks worse than it actually is.
Aside from doing a search online for specific meats and "George Foreman Grill" to find specific numbers, about the only other thing you could do is grill something on it and get the drippings analyzed for fat content.... although that's not terribly feasible for most people.
Question: Is it required by law for a restaurant to provide nutrition information to customers? I work for a very popular restaurant chain, however, I have never been able to find any nutrition information on their menu items. I am wondering, is this legal? Perhaps they have a hard copy in back that I am not aware of, but it is not available on the website nor is it visible to customers at all.
Yeah, I thought it was that if a customer asks there MUST be some sort of copy. Hmm... I will have to ask my boss where that is.
Answer: The LEAN Act (Labeling Education And Nutrition) require chain food restaurants, or restaurants with more then 20 locations to provide nutritional information.
If its not a food chain, they are not required to provide nutritional information.
I work at a family restaurant and all meals are prepared to order, which makes it hard to provide nutritional information. The chef doesnt measure the contents of each order, he does it from self experience, so the same dish may have a different calorie count. One Chicken Alfredo may have more or less cream then the last one that went out, because its not measured exactly.
Question: Where can I get accurate nutrition information? I'm trying to keep track of nutrition in what I eat. Calories, fat, sugar, protein etc. Anyway I've used spark recipes, calorie count and nutrition data. They all have different info for the same things. It's really aggravating! Is there any place that has more reliable information?
Answer: All the nutrition data that I am aware of most likely originates from the USDA and can be accessed at the following site:

Question: Is it legal for a franchise restaurant to withold nutrition information? I know a restaurant chain who repeatedly refuses to provide nutritional information when asked. For years, this company has given everyone the runaround. Being a franchise owner myself, I was told that I must have nutrition information about our food available upon request. My question is whether or not it is legal for a fast-food franchise to repeatedly refuse to provide nutritional values for their products. Who regulates this kind of thing? To whose attention should this be brought? It is a national chain, not some local mom-and-pop store.
Answer: No this is not Legal I work in a restaurant chain and we MUST provide any customer who asks for it nutritional information. If this is a chain then I suggest you call head office and speak to someone higher up on the ladder.

Question: how do you figure out how much calories is in something by reading the nutrition information? How do you find out whats in something before you eat/drink it ?
people seem to read the nutrition information and easily find out.
Please dont make this difficult please try and make it a nice a simple answer.
Answer: First you look on the nutrition label. You will see a lot of numbers and the first number (somewhere towards the top) labeled Calories will be how many calories are in 1 serving of whatever the food is. It will also say up top how many servings are in a container. So you just multiply how many calories it says by how many servings you think you ate. Sometimes the container is only 1 serving.
