Nutrition Vitamins Supplements
Question: Is it ok to bring vitamins/nutrition supplements when travelling from Canada to the USA? Hello,
I will be travelling in a few days by plane to the USA from Canada, I'm staying for 2 weeks, I was wondering about this question.
I'm into working out fitness and such and take a few supplements, vitamins, creatine, whey protein, that's basically it. But I'm always worried because you always hear about how in the USA they are so very, very, worried about anything that has anything to do with drugs and if you have some sort of pills with you they'll confiscate them and interrogate you for 8 hours etc. etc. Is this just a stereotype kind of view? Or will I get in trouble for bringing such things with me?
I thought I'd just take what I need for a couple weeks in a bag in my checked luggage,. It's all just general stuff you could buy at a store, but is this allowed to transport such things or will I get into trouble or have it confiscated? Thank you,
Answer: Hi, as long as your vitamins and supplements are clearly marked (are small sizes) and in your checked luggage, you shouldn't have a problem. I would definately not carry them on the plane. The customs people take any and all items they deem hazardous, and yes if they think you are bringing in drugs they will interrogate you (among other things if they feel its warranted) So don't take it lightly. Another option for you may be to buy what you need in the US (probably cheaper) since your going to be away for 2 wks. Further to that you can call your airline directly and ask what they advise. Hope this helped and have a great trip.
Question: Can multi vitamins and other supplements entirely make up for diet which lacks nutrition? Say I were to mostly just eat just pasta and some form of protein, like tofu or milk products, could I still get my missing nutrients efficiently through pills and supplements alone?
Answer: everyone's body processes nutrients differently and has different needs and demands. the only way to know for sure is to try it out. if you feel sluggish, have dry hair or skin, get sick easily, or have other signs of a vitamin deficiency, go to a doctor to get a complete metabolic profile (its a blood test) and you can see what you are lacking in your diet. you may need shots such as vitamin b to fill the gaps.
Question: What are things a woman needs for good health? (supplements/ vitamins)? I want to be healthy and idk what a woman really needs nutrition-wise.

Question: vitamin/ nutrition supplement reviews and regulations? I am thinking of starting taking some nutritional supplements but I cannot find any reliable-looking website that provides reviews about the various brands and information. Is there a controlling body in the UK for nutrition supplements/multiviamines?
P.S. A friend recommended me solgar products but I would like to double-check the product's reputation and history before I start using them preferably from an orthodox-medicine website. Any relevant information or personal experience will be greatly appreciated.
Answer: Some of the websites you can find are either run by the companies that make the supplements, or they sponsor them, so you do get a biased view.
Try here...
http://www.nutrition.org.uk
You get unbiased advice and facts.
If you can, try and find a nutritional therapist that sells Lamberts supplements. They are one of the best I've come across.
Hope this helps.
Question: Does fluoride in toothpaste block the absorption of supplements and vitamins? My mother went to a nutritionist at the local "Clarks" nutrition store because supposively this guys has a good reputation. One thing he told her was to get toothpaste that was fluoride free because it blocks the absorption of supplements she needs. He is also a big believer in some book that says specifically which foods are good/bad for certain blood types. Any thoughts, knowledge or experience with this and is this guy legit or full of crap?
Answer: sounds full of crap - nobody swallows toothpaste so how can it effect the absorption of supplements?
edit* you need a certain amount of flouride in your body actually it's only poisonous if too much is taken. Oh and baby's get flouride drops
Question: Vitamin supplements for girls? My family and I are going healthy, and I need names of vitamin, herbal and nutrition supplements. I, apparently, lack the following vitamins:
A, B, E, K,. I also need more Iron, Zinc, and omega three fish oil.
I understand there is a vitamin specifically designed for teens. If you could provide a name I would be thankful. I am thirteen by the way.
Also, what diet would you recommend I follow? Or exercise plan.
Thank you
Answer: instead of vitamins and supplements, why not eat the REAL DEAL...eat more vegetables, fruits, and fish...there is no better way to get the right vitamins then by eating them directly from where they come from!!!
Question: Nutrition supplements for a 20 year old cat? I have a cat that just turned 20 this month and I was wondering if there any dietary/vitamin supplements that I should be giving her. She can really only eat can cat food because her teeth aren’t the best. She eats 2 of the smaller cans of pro-plan cat food a day. I just picked up some Welactin for cats but have yet to try it. Any suggestions on anything else I might do to keep her healthy? I might add the Vet guessed her age at 12 before I told him she was 20 last time I had her in.
Answer: My old cat who lived to be 22+ loved to eat raw chicken liver. I gave her extra when I made up her raw meat diet from ground chicken (with a supplement powder). Liver is an excellent source of vitamin A and D. Some liver was in her raw meat mixture. Those two vitamins are fat-soluble ones and excess would be stored in your cat's liver (not good).
Try it to see if she likes it. I wouldn't give it more than twice a week and just one regular chicken liver. You should probably check her canned food to see if there is A and D there as supplements already.
Question: What are the best nutrition/diet/protein/energy supplements, drinks, or bars for dieting or for working out? Ive been working out for about 2 months now, 3 times a week.Im looking for something that can help improve my body by feeding me all the right vitamins and or proteins that i need for that extra boost. So, Sometime soon Im stopping by my local GNC store and i was wondering if there are any particular supplements that you guys get that can help improve your overall results??
Answer: I suppose everyone has their own opinion but personally I think supplements are a waste... There is no evidence that they work for everyone the same way and you may end up wasting alot of time and money... There are many of us that went to small and skinny to awesome physiques just by lifting weights and eating right...
NOTHING compares to eating right, High quality proteins, fiber and Carbs.. Personally I do use 100% Whey Protein just for that added protein in the day but I get all my energy just from eating right..
A multi-vitamin once a day is always a good idea as well..
If there is a great muscle building formula out there though, I would like to hear of it as well..
Question: vitamins, minerals, and supplements..oh my!? Hi everyone!
So I just got a job (finally) at a local health food market. I will be working in the vitamin/supplement section of the store and expected to be a go-to person for supplements. I do have a degree in nutrition so i am familiar with the basic vitamins and minerals..but not so much with herbal supplements (ginko...st jonhs wort...that kinda stuff) can anyone tell me about some supplements? just basic info on some on the market? Thanks!
Answer: ...Where would you like us to start? There are thousands of supplements on the market that cover an enormous variety of purposes and "interesting facts" on them. Y!A only allows so many characters in an answer, so it would be impossible to fit a complete answer in the space allotted.
That being said, if you could say what exactly are you looking for, that would help to narrow it down immeasurably. For example, are you looking for categories of them (eg. what's good for brain health, what's good for mood, etc) or "quick facts" on each one? I have extensive history, research, and education about herbs and supplements, so I'd be happy to answer your question... but with that broad of a question, that would be a few hour lecture type of answer. ;-)
Feel free to e-mail me with more detail and I'd be happy to reply. I hope I helped!
Question: Does anyone know any good sites on Nutrition? I'm 5'3" @ 160lbs. Everyone says I don't look it because I'm pretty solid. But I need to lose about 30lbs for me to feel comfortable with myself & I just found out diabetes runs in my family. So first I want to focus on eating healthier and living healthier.
I've joined SPARKPEOPLE.COM WHICH IS AN ENORMOUS HELP via a suggestion from a fellow Yahoo member!
Now, I'd like a site to inform me about nutrition, organic foods, good supplements, necessary vitamins. I think I eat healthy already. I only drink water, green tea, coca tea. One cup of coffee/week. I don't eat fast foods, fried foods, soda, or juice. I eat mostly seafood & poultry & little red meat. I eat whole grains like quinoa. I'm TRYING to take it easy w/ rice, bread, tortillas & pasta. I'm latina so I have a really hard time slowing down on the last food group mentioned.
I want to learn how to eat better not just knowing to eat more veggies & grains. I want to know how eating particular foods affect my body. HELP!
Answer: www.thecaloriecounter.com can help when you want nutrition info on many foods.
Good luck- you can do it!!!!
Question: What's the difference between taking vitamins and eating vegetables? Essentially, the reason why we should eat vegetables and other healthy foods is because they contain a good amount of all the good things we see in the nutrition facts chart that our body needs... and not much of the bad stuff. Also, because it's a better food to eat as opposed to chips and candy as a regular diet... obviously.
But in terms of the nutrients that we gain from vegetables... why can't I just take a really good multivitamin supplement (plus whatever else that particular one doesn't have... like fiber supplements etc..). If I managed to find vitamins that contained everything I needed on a daily basis.... why should I eat vegetables?
Is there any other benefit? Or for the veggie haters like myself, can I opt with vitamins/supplements as a complete replacement for my veggie requirements? (assuming I don't eat extra junk food/bad food to replace the lesser amount of food on my plate).
Answer: Supplements are not the 'real thing'.
Multi-Vitamins are mande in labs, Fruits & Vegetables are grown NATURALLY in the ground.
Vitamin pills will contain a basic level of Vitamin, which can be A, B, C, D etc.
However, naturally grown vegetables will contain basic vitamins but will also include extra vitamins such as Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B9, etc.
MultiVitamins are cheap and ineffective, they are not proven to actualy contain a high enough dosage of Vitamin to make any difference to Vitamin intake.
They are mearly a cloan of the real thing.
If you cant get on board with Vegetables, try new and different things. Try blending vegetables into a liquid drink, or eat them with other foods that have stronger tastes. Vitamins are vital for a healthy body, but luckily if you dont like Vegetables then you can find just as many different vitamins in Fruits.
Question: What vitamins are good to aid weight loss? I had a baby 8 weeks ago and was back to my pre pregnancy weight within a week but have since put on a couple of pounds. I am exercising and eating well but thought it may be due to a lack of vitamins - i have started taking folate again but wondered if there are other vitamin supplements that are good to lose or maintain weight when your diet is not as good (due to baby demands). He is formula fed by the way so my nutrition doesnt affect his.
Answer: one a day makes a vitamin called weight smart-im not sure if it works or not as i havent tried it but you may want to check it out.
Question: What is important to you as far as nutrition? What vitamins/supplements do you take and why?
What is your diet like?
What do you think are the most important 'keys' to nutrition?
Answer: I take a multi vitamin, to make sure all my needs are covered
I take whey protein as an extra source of essential amino acids and protion
I take creatine so i get more from my work outs.
My diet currently consists of
Meal 1
3 scrambled egg whites, 1 yolk on brown bread, no butter
Meal 2
Carrot sticks, a kiwi fruit and mixed beans.
Meal 3
A spinich and brocoli salad, with tuna/salmon, chick and beans
Meal 4
A banna smoothie with low fat milk, a banana, 2 egg whites and 2 scoups of whey protein
Meal 5
1/2 a cup of brown rice, with 4oz of chicken breast/salmon grilled, and mushrooms with a vetable sauce
Meal 6
Varies, mainly a couple of pieces of brolcoli and a can of fat free tuna
The most important keys are, staying away from refined carbs, like sugar and shite bread and rice, and saturated fats.
Also, to eat a ballanced diet, and not to exceed your calorie expenditure unless your trying to gain weight or build muscle, and exercise regulally.
Question: why do people think vitamins, supplements, etc. are dangerous? Zero deaths caused by vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbs
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor
(NaturalNews) To hear opponents of natural medicine say it, vitamins and herbs are extremely dangerous for your health. They should be regulated, we're told, because they're so dangerous!
Statistics from the U.S. National Poison Data System prove otherwise. According to a 174-page report just published, the number of people killed in 2009 across America by vitamins, minerals, amino acids or herbal supplements is exactly zero.
Compare that to the 100,000 (or so) Americans killed each year by FDA-approved pharmaceuticals -- and that's even according to studies published in JAMA. Also consider the thousands of women harmed or killed by medically-unjustified cancer treatments following false positives from faulty mammograms. And don't forget about the more than 16,500 Americans killed each year from internal bleeding caused by NSAIDs (over-the-counter painkillers).
As the July 1998 issue of The American Journal of Medicine explains:
"Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone." (Singh Gurkirpal, MD, "Recent Considerations in Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Gastropathy", The American Journal of Medicine, July 27, 1998, p. 31S)
So if NSAIDs alone are killing 16,500 people a year (or likely much more now, as use of these drugs has risen significantly since 1998), and nutritional supplements are killing zero people a year, why do health regulators try to scare everybody about vitamins being so "dangerous?"
Pharmaceuticals, meanwhile, are openly allowed to be prescribed for off-label use, meaning that doctors can prescribe them for diseases and health conditions for which they've never even been tested!
What's wrong with this picture? It's clearly a war against nutrition -- a war against natural medicine -- being waged by the health regulators of the world who are conspiring with Big Pharma to keep the people trapped in a state of malnutrition (all while profiting from their disease by selling them more patented pharmaceuticals).
The Orthomolecular Medicine News Service published a full article on this issue. Here's what they had to say about the safety of nutritional supplements and the misguided attempts by world governments to limit or outlaw many supplements.
No Deaths from Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids or Herbs
Poison Control Statistics Prove Supplements' Safety
There was not even one death caused by a dietary supplement in 2008, according to the most recent information collected by the U.S. National Poison Data System. The new 174-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin.
Additionally, there were no deaths whatsoever from any amino acid or herbal product. This means no deaths at all from blue cohosh, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, kava kava, St. John's wort, valerian, yohimbe, Asian medicines, ayurvedic medicines, or any other botanical. There were zero deaths from creatine, blue-green algae, glucosamine, chondroitin, melatonin, or any homeopathic remedies.
Furthermore, there were zero deaths in 2008 from any dietary mineral supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, colloidal silver, selenium, iron, or multimineral supplements. Two children died as a result of medical use of the antacid sodium bicarbonate. The other "Electrolyte and Mineral" category death was due to a man accidentally drinking sodium hydroxide, a highly toxic degreaser and drain-opener.
No man, woman or child died from nutritional supplements. Period.
61 poison centers provide coast-to-coast data for the U.S. National Poison Data System, which is then reviewed by 29 medical and clinical toxicologists. NPDS, the authors write, is "one of the few real-time national surveillance systems in existence, providing a model public health surveillance system for all types of exposures, public health event identification, resilience response and situational awareness tracking."
Over half of the U.S. population takes daily nutritional supplements. Even if each of those people took only one single tablet daily, that makes 154,000,000 individual doses per day, for a total of over 56 billion doses annually. Since many persons take more than just one vitamin or mineral tablet, actual consumption is considerably higher, and the safety of nutritional supplements is all the more remarkable.
If nutritional supplements are allegedly so "dangerous," as the FDA and news medi
Answer: in the alternative section of yahoo answers, you'll only find those who keep trying to disprove what others believe in. if it works for you, then don't let anyone tell you something different. scientific facts are dynamic, what is a fact today can become a myth tomorrow w/ more valid studies.
they say vitamins are dangerous to our health, well the people pushing this agenda are those who support the control of vitamins and minerals. look up monsanto, they're quite e v i l .
Question: New to working out, nutrition, supplements? Okay, I am starting P90X, and I'm going to TRY to follow the nutrition plan as closely as I can. But my MAIN concern is supplements. The only ones I have heard of is whey protein and creatine, and multi-vitamins. I am about 6'3 200 lbs, in average shape. I want to tone but building mass would be nice as well, thats the only reason why I considered supplements. I will try to adhere to the nutrition plan as most as I can, the only but in here is because i'm a college student and live paycheck to paycheck, I can't afford going to the grocery store to get high end expensive things just to necessarily eat better.
Answer: Ha..I have been on the college student nutrition plan..it is tough BUT Eggs are cheap as well as ground beef and frozen veggies. I would go with a high quality whey protein minus the fillers and additives for your protein. You can get 5lbs for $26.99 online! Good luck
Question: Anyone know cheap online store to buy whey protein powder isolate and supplements in bulk in Canada? When I started training for my first bodybuilding competition last two years ago I did a whole bunch of research on whey protein isolate powders to supplement my nutrition and workouts.
I found wheydepot.com one of the best place to purchase whey protein isolate and supplements in Canada in bulk - at low price. I must say, the Whey Depot Protein really stands out compared to all my previous Whey Protein mixes. Not to mention the awesome super low prices.
