Question: What's the difference between an athlete's nutritional needs and a regular person's nutritional needs? I just need a little help... I'm doing a health project for school, thus far I've basically found that athletes need more of certain things (such as amino acids, enzymes, carbs, etc.) and they should avoid unhealthy foods or at least make better nutritional choices. Question: Do domesticated rats have different nutritional needs? If wild rats can live off a mere diet of stolen goat grain or food from the cupboards, why do rat owners believe that rats need a super specific nutritional diet? I'm not trying to offend anyone, this is something I'm very curious about.
Answer: Just because rats eat anything, does not mean they dont have specific nutritional needs...for example, if copper is lacking in the diet, it causes problems long term. Believe it or not, rat owners want their rats to live as long as possible, and we believe that optimal nutrition makes a difference to their lifespan and health.
Question: How might the nutritional needs of older people differ from those of younger people? How are their needs similar?
Answer: As the body gets older it starts to deteriorate (as you've probably noticed). Cells aren't replicating as much anymore, some hormones may not be producing as much as they used to etc... so it's likely that elderly people will need things like vitamin supplements, especially those of calcium and potassium. magnesium and iron are also important but aren't usually supplemented (except for anemic patients in which iron might be).
Question: What are a Dogs nutritional needs? I want to know where i could find an in depth analysis of what dogs can eat there nutritional needs. Like vitamins minerals how long it takes for them to use them and how much of any one could be lethal. also what foods can a dog eat and digest.
I'm not looking for some ones answer to the questions but some online page or book that i can refer to.
Answer: Hi,
This is a tricky question of sorts that too many dog owners get wrong. Dogs need a lot of the things we would consider for a human diet including grains certain veggies, meats and proteins.
First thing to do is read the side of the bag of dog food and see whats in it. Then if I were you , read up on "home made" dog foods (be careful of the information, some of it can be really wrong). Generally whole grain rice, chicken, the right mixed veggies (corn carrots .etc mix) is good. You'd be surprised also by what is good for dogs. For example, egg shells are good for a dog's coat.
The foods to stay away from:
Chocolate, Onion/onion powers, garlic/garlic powers, rasins /grapes (or any juices made from them), a lot of nuts, milk. some vegggies like broccoli can irriate GI tract.
If you notice, many of these things are in the food we eat, never give the dog say Chinese / Japanese takeout, probably a chicken nugget or two or some pizza crusts would be find. Hence be mindful of the garlic / opinion in anything you feed them. Some people strictly give no treats like this to avoid problems.

Question: Why does a smaller cell have an easier time meeting its nutritional needs than a larger cell does? Why does a smaller cell have an easier time meeting its nutritional needs than a larger cell does?
Answer: Two reasons:
1) Because the larger a cell (or organism) is, the farther it has to transport both nutrients (from the outside in), or waste products (from the inside out), and so the smaller its energy budget for everything else will be.
2) Plus, the fact that cells take in nutrition at their surface means that the larger the cell, even more energy has to be expended, since when you increase surface area, volume increases even more (the difference between pi*r^2 and pi*r^3)

Question: Does surgery that removes the ileum imply any special nutritional needs? If a person has Crohn's Disease, it often means that the lowest part of the small intestine needs to be surgically removed. But this is where various vitamins are most absorbed, including A,D,E, K. So how can the person avoid deficiencies in such vitamins?
Answer: His original disease demands removal of ileum -so it needs to be removed. Problems related to ileal resection has to be addressed subsequently.
Junum slowly takes over the job of ileum & it starts absorbing fat soluble vitamins in due course / they can be given parenterally to meet the defficiency till such time of resumption of ileal function by jejunum.

Question: How do i make sure I meet my nutritional needs if i am to become a vegetarian? I'm thinking of going vegetarian, but I am not sure of how to meet the missing nutrients from meat.
Answer: instead of your meat servings, replace the same amount with beans, almonds, legumes etc! that will get you your protein.
now for your iron, a bowl full of DARK green veg like spinach, bok choi will get you your RDI :)
not to mention all the extra nutrients in those foods without the cholesterol in it! :)
but....if you'rea lazy eater like me, iron tablets are good but don't take them too often as a substitute because it can cause constipation!
oh! i also forgot, if you're concerned about your Omega 3's, try Flaxseed oil!
Question: What brand of dog food will best suit the nutritional needs of my 8-month old miniature schnauzer? I would like to prevent as much as possible certain diseases linked to its breed by having him eat a diet that's most suitable for his breed. And what age can I switch him to adult dog food? I'm from the Philippines and I'd very much appreciate replies from the Filipino dog enthusiasts or breeders (to make sure that you recommend a brand that's actually available here in the Phils.).... thanks very much!
I know I can't change his genetics....but I definitely know that what he ingests will definitely have an effect on his metabolism, therefore affecting whether he will develop certain illness linked with the breed sooner or later...I'm just curious if there's a type of dog food out there that is balanced enough that wouldn make him LESS susceptible to diseases linked to the breed....just curious =) thanks for the replies!

Answer: I don't know if you get Canidae there, and it is my favorite..But I believe Purina Pro Plan is available there, and it is a very good food. You can switch to adult food when the pup is grown, or at about a year. (yes, pro plan is widely distributed there)
I also think Timberwolf Organics is distributed there.. It is an excellent food for allergies.. (no, I looked it up, and it will only deliver an order of 510 pounds or more! )
