Oatmeal
Question: Oatmeal...? How do you like to make your oatmeal taste good,
I like to add brownsugar and just a few chocolate chips. Or dice an apple and put it in with cinnamon. What about you?
Answer: I like mine with a little maple syrup in it and a few bananas.
Question: How do you make Oatmeal & Raisins for Breakfast? I don't like the instant oatmeal. I use the kind that you make on the stove. Everytime I make Oatmeal and Raisins, the oatmeal tastes dry and yucky and the raisins taste bland. My older younger sister makes perfect oatmeal. She makes it for the family sometimes. I don't put any sugar in my oatmeal anymore.
Answer: It is not that hard. Simply cook the oatmeal according to the directions, then add the raisins at the very end so they are not bland.
Question: Instant oatmeal - can I make it with cold water? Can I make regular oatmeal with cold water as well? I'm not crazy about hot food, and if you leave oatmeal ito cool, it gets either too solid or broken down. Even if more time is involved, can I let it sit and it will become tasty oatmeal?
Answer: If it's instant oatmeal it will eventually soak up the water, so you're fine. It just takes longer.
Question: What kind of oatmeal am I supposed to eat while breastfeeding? Is the instant oatmeal ok? Can I add syrup or milk and sugar? Is the flavored oatmeal just as good? Everywhere I look it just says "eat oatmeal". What is it about oatmeal that's so good? I know it has fiber, is that why I should eat it or does it really help with milk supply. I'm pumping and need all the help I can get upping the supply. Thanks!
Answer: From kellymom.com (best source for breastfeeding!)
"One bowl of hot oatmeal (any type) every day. Some moms say that they see an increase in supply when they eat anything made with oats, including instant oatmeal and oatmeal cookies"
"Oatmeal is is a good source of iron. It is known that maternal anemia/low iron levels can result in a decreased milk supply, so it makes sense that eating something high in iron might increase milk supply in some women. "
"Eating a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast each morning is a frequently heard recommendation for increasing milk supply. Although there is no scientific evidence regarding oatmeal and milk supply, oatmeal does seem to work for some."

Answer: This is an Alton Brown recipe from www.foodnetwork.com for homemade granola bars...really good, better than any you get in a package and really easy!
8 ounces old-fashioned rolled oats, about 2 cups
1 1/2 ounces raw sunflower seeds, about 1/2 cup
3 ounces sliced almonds, about 1 cup
1 1/2 ounces wheat germ, about 1/2 cup
6 ounces honey, about 1/2 cup
1 3/4 ounces dark brown sugar, about 1/4 cup packed
1-ounce unsalted butter, plus extra for pan
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
6 1/2 ounces chopped dried fruit, any combination of apricots, cherries or blueberries
Butter a 9 by 9-inch glass baking dish and set aside. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Spread the oats, sunflower seeds, almonds, and wheat germ onto a half-sheet pan. Place in the oven and toast for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
In the meantime, combine the honey, brown sugar, butter, extract and salt in a medium saucepan and place over medium heat. Cook until the brown sugar has completely dissolved.
Once the oat mixture is done, remove it from the oven and reduce the heat to 300 degrees F. Immediately add the oat mixture to the liquid mixture, add the dried fruit, and stir to combine. Turn mixture out into the prepared baking dish and press down, evenly distributing the mixture in the dish and place in the oven to bake for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. Cut into squares and store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Question: What's in Oatmeal and Cheerios that make them so good for Cholesterol? I've heard that Cheerios and Oatmeal are really good for your cholesterol, and I've been eating them regularly. I usually eat Cherrios during the Spring and Summer, but in Fall and Winter I eat Oatmeal. I've never had a cholesterol problem, but still this combo has kept it all in check.
Answer: It is thought that the oat fibers in oatmeal mix with cholesterol in the small intestine, then bind to the cholesterol molecules and carry it out of the body -- instead of it being absorbed into the blood.
Oatmeal seems to be most effective in lowering LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) levels. According to the studies in adults, LDL cholesterol may be lowered by 10 percent in some cases. In these studies, anywhere between 40 and 60 grams -- or roughly one bowl -- of oatmeal was consumed by each subject per day. The cholesterol lowering benefits of oatmeal is also dose-dependent. That is, the more oatmeal you eat, the lower your cholesterol will go.
Although oatmeal is helpful in lowering cholesterol, some of the ingredients placed in oatmeal may not be. This would include butter, chocolate, whole milk, and cheeses. Be sure to check the ingredients of instant oatmeal and the fat content of added ingredients if you want to achieve the full, cholesterol-lowering effect of oatmeal.

CHEERIOS
Cheerios — Clinically Proven to Lower Blood Cholesterol
Three grams of soluble fiber daily from whole grain oat foods, in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, can help lower cholesterol, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease. But only certain breakfast cereals, such as Cheerios, provide the benefits of heart-healthy soluble fiber from whole grain oats. Cheerios has 1 gram of soluble fiber per cup. The important thing to know is that Cheerios is the only leading cold cereal clinically proven to help lower cholesterol in a low fat diet.
How do Whole Grain Oats Work to Help Lower Cholesterol?
Nutrition researchers have some ideas. Soluble fiber in whole grain oats can form a gel in your digestive system, which may bind cholesterol and take it out of the body. By lowering your cholesterol, you may lower your risk of heart disease. That's good news for you and your family!
Question: Why think of oatmeal as different than other grains? Bread is made from another grain, usually wheat. People like to put cinnamon and sugar on bread and (no surprise) also on oatmeal.
Try a leap of imagination! People put turkey and ham, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and mustard, etc on bread to make a sandwich. I tried that with oatmeal. It was pretty good. I was impressed and try something different almost every day now. I even like oatmeal with just a little pepper and good old yellow mustard. I had an extra flavor packet for ramen noodles and that was wonderful on oatmeal. I'm trying a bouillon cube next.
Oats digest better with milk or some other dairy product. I almost always use cheese.
Cook the oats regularly, wait a few minutes, then add ingredients and top with cheese, and zap it a little in the microwave. What do you think?
Answer: oats help prevent the risks of heart attack, and helps you have a proper waste disposal out of your body (fiber).
Question: How do I add oatmeal to a recipe? I have a recipe for dough drop blueberry cobbler I'd like to add oatmeal but I dont know if i have to pre cook the oatmeal or if I can just add it straight to the dough and cook it that way. Any suggestions??
Answer: you can just add it without cooking, but the mixture has to be more watery than normal. if you have a recipe, it should state how much liquid you need. and if oatmeal was included, the amount should be enough.

Question: How can Oatmeal help a person to lose weight? I've heard several people say that since they started eating Oatmeal for breakfast, they've lost weight. How is this possible? I was always under the impression that Oatmeal is a starch. Could it be that the Oatmeal is making them feel full, therefore there's no hunger enticing them to eat empty, sugary calories?
Answer: Oatmeal has a lot of health benefits and you're right; It makes you feel full/satisfied, so you won't feel the need to grab a candy bar or bag of chips an hour after you eat.
Oats are a good source of many nutrients including vitamin E, zinc, selenium, copper, iron, manganese and magnesium. Oats are also a good source of protein.
The Fiber in Oatmeal helps to keep you "regular" and also slows down the digestion of starch, which in turn keeps your blood sugar balanced.
Great Question =)
