Omega 3
Question: Is there any benefit or harm to my daughter if I take Omega 3-6-9 supplements while breastfeeding? I've been wanting to take some Omega 3 supplements for a while now, just to boost my energy along with the other benefits... They're on sale at my local drugstore this week, so I figured now is the time to ask!
Answer: If you take omega 3 supplements, some of the DHA will go into your breastmilk and will help with your baby's brain development. So, yes, there is a huge benefit. The only possible harm I can think of is if the supplement contained mercury, but most good omega 3 supplements are molecularly distilled or from algae.
"MissKandyKane1888," I can't believe you are comparing omega 3 supplements to thalidomide.
Question: What other food items contain omega 3, apart from fish? I know that fish contain omega 3 oils in abundance, but want to know if there are any other food items that also contain this vital nutrient in abundance. I know of walnuts which also contain plenty of O3. Any other? Also, which types of fish have the most concentration of O3 in them? Thanks.
Answer: walnuts, flaxseeds, fish, olive oil and beans are all good sources of Omega 3
salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, sardines, and trout all have a high content of 03 in them
Question: What's the difference between Omega-3 and DHA? I noticed that with some prenatal vitamins some have the omega 3 pill with them and some contain DHA. Is there a difference or is DHA a form of Omega-3?
Answer: Omega 3 and DHA are the same, just like Omega 6 and ARA are the same as well. Often it depends what country you're in. I think in USA they refer more to them as omega's whereas in Canada they are DHA and ARA.
Question: Is there an Omega-3 supplement that does not contain oil obtained from clubbed seals? I wrote to my local health food store, and they cannot guarantee that the Omega-3 pills they carry do not carry seal oil - vaguely referred to as 'fish oils' - AND I wrote to a large vitamin company, and they said that they are working on it.

Question: Have you found the omega-3 supplements really work or is this the placebo effect? I was diagnosed with both ADHD and mild anxiety, so adderall was not a very good choice for me with both of those conditions. I tried taking these high quality krill oil omega 3 supplements, two pills twice a day which is maximum dose. I've noticed within weeks that I can concentrate better, think more rationally and clearer, and have better memory. Have you also found this when you took these supplements or is this just a placebo effect? Thanks!
Answer: I once read a book where they took all types of mental illnesses (depression, manic depression, add/adhd, anxiety, schizophrenia, dxlexia. agoraphobia etc and they tested the patient via a pet scan of the brain before and after treatment which was high doses of fish oil.
The example I remember was they got a person with schizophrenia to push a bottom when he was having an hallucination and then checked him immediately via a PET scan (like a cat scan) and were able to see which part of the brain was active.
After taking large amounts of fish oil (I forget the amount but like 5000 mg or so), he stopped having all sign of schizophrenia..then they repeated the pet scan and found that the area from before now completely resembled a normal brain and not a schizophrenic brain,
The reason omega three fats work for things like depression is that average American gets several times more omega 6 fats than omega threes (as omega three are not that common) and this causes the brain (which is primarily fat) to malfunction in the following way.
Normally the neurotransmitters (think of them as little boats) have to cross the synaptic gap between two neurons (brain cells) and then continue on going from neuron to neuron in a kind of nerve relay or impulse. When these boats go into the gap between the brain cells in their travels, they must cross the gap and then jump to the next neuron..they do this by docking into dock like sites caused neuro-receptor sites. Normally they are snug so the boats (neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, etc) wiggle their way in as the docks (neuro-receptor sites are flexible.
However, when we get more omega 6 than we should (the 6 and 3 fats should be about equal), these receptor site (docks) harden and the boats cannot wiggle in them and they build up in the gap and this is what is called a chemical imbalance. Too much of a neurotransmitter there can cause an illness like say depression.
supposedly antidepressant alter this process; unfortunately thought they carry serious side effect..most SSRI antidepressants can cause increased suicidal ideation and exacerbated depression in some people (read peter breggins books for the dangers). This is why alternative healing is preferred.
One should increase omega three fatty acids by consuming fish oil..the highest sources in fish (canned or fresh (wildcaught not farmed) are mackerel, salmon, herring and sardines. The only land sources are walnuts, flax seeds and flax seed oil, and purslane.
I am interested in your findings as I have add I strongly believe and was just researching herbs for it. Do you feel fish oil can pinch hit for the krill oil which I assume is more expensive and what was the exact dose (by mg) that you took..
Please comment on this by adding details or email me if you could
Based on the data I just explained and mentioned, no, I would definitely not assume it is a placebo effect..real changes are taking place in the brain.
Has your anxiety also gone down as I have this and depression and need to start taking the fish oil I have in the freezer that I usually forget to take..I am thinking I should take these again after reading your question and thinking about this..
Question: Is Omega 3 good for you to loose weight? Someone told me that if you take Omega 3 capsules it can help you loose weight. Can someone tell me if this is true?
Answer: You might, but CLA is known for weight loss.Tonalin
http://www.wellnesspartners.com/tonalin/weightloss.html
Studies show that TONALIN® CLA reduces body fat and weight in four ways:
* By decreasing the amount of fat that is stored after eating
* By increasing the rate of fat breakdown in fat cells
* By increasing the rate of fat metabolism
* By decreasing the number of fat cells
What Omega 3 does, is fighting the cholesterol, improving the circulation,,,,

Question: What is Omega 3 and what does it do for your body? If I were to take an omega 3 supplement every day what would this do for me?What is it doing for my body?
Answer: You know how saturated fat, mainly from meat and dairy products, is bad for you? Omega 3 is a range of different types of fats that are good for you.
If you cook some meat then allow the fat left over in the pan to go cold it goes hard, right? That's saturated fat and that's what it does in your blood. It blocks up your arteries and isn't good for you for a range of reasons.
If you cook fish and let the fat left over go cold it isn't hard, it's runny. So that's good fats, or polyunsaturated fats.
There's a number of Omega 3 fats. DHA is the most important, and EPA is too. Both are found in marine sources, basically fish.
Then there's ALA found in plant sources like flaxseeds. Not as important but still useful to your health.
There's a wide range of different conditions that have been shown to respond positively with Omega 3 supplementation. The American Heart Association tells us to eat fish at least twice a week for our heart. The Omega 3 fats in fish are good for us.
They reduce the risk of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes. Studies have shown that Omega 3s are good for your brain, improving memory and brain function.
There's more conditions that are said to respond to Omega 3 like depression, arthritis and any condition where inflammation is an issue. Omega 3s reduce inflammation more than aspirin.
And there's more. Have a look at the website below if you want to find out more. It gets quite involved.
Unfortunately the toxins in fish (mercury, PCbs, dioxine and so on) aren't good for us so you shouldn't eat a lot of fish. The FDA tells us not to eat a lot for that reason.
The best way to take Omega 3 is to take supplements daily. The best ones aren't contaminated and so you don't need to worry about that. Not all of them are the same though, you have to choose well.
Question: how do omega 3 helps to lower the cholesterol level? i've searched for the information over the internet but still didn't get the answer.
so far, most articles say that omega 3 helps to decrease the LDL (not sure since some articles says that it has potential of increasing the LDL) and triglycerides and increase the HDL.
what i need to know is the mechanism that involved to achieve the effects. did any components in omega 3 inhibits the cholesterol production or perhaps it works in reducing the uptake of cholesterol from our diet? i hope someone could help me. thank you.
Answer: triglycerides
and
cholesterol
are different things
fenofibrate , and
omega 3 lowers triglycerides
atorvastatin 10 mg daily lowers cholesterol
Question: How many capsules of omega 3 make 1000 mg? I currently have a bottle of omega 3 1000 mg. I was told that a single capsule alone does not contain 1000 mg, but rather 3 capsules must be consumed to achieve 1000 mg. Is this ratio correct? The bottle says 1000 mg and suggests taking one capsule three times daily.
Answer: A single (fish oil) capsule of 1,000 mg contains 300 mg of combined DHA and EPA (120 mg of DHA and 180 mg of EPA) so to get 1,000 mg of omega 3 (combined DHA and EPA) you need to take 3 and 1/3 capsules a day. 3 capsules a day would only give you 900 mg of omega 3 so perhaps you might want to take 4 a day to get 1,200 mg of omega 3.
Question: If Omega 3 is eaten in very high doses it can cause strokes, or so wikipedia says, how high is this does? How much Omega do you have to eat, and just once, or this dose multiple times before a stroke? I am taking supplements for Omega 3.
Answer: generally if your body doesn't need the supplement that you are taking, it will just pass (if your urine is very yellow, this is why) for your body to OD on supplements, it takes ALOT - I mean an obscene amount. if you just follow the directions on the bottle and take the recommended amount, you'll be fine
Question: Can taking to much omega 3 fish oils cause brain damage to my unborn child? My doctor gave me a repeat script for preg omega and the next time we went he gave me a repeat script for mumomega which i have now been taking both as i thought i was suppossed to. I read eating fish can cause brain damage to a fetus becuase of the mercury. Are omega 3 supplements the same? I mean do they contain mercury. Do you think i have harmed my baby now?
Answer: If you're taking a Mercury-Free Fish Oil Supplement then you shouldn't have an issue. You would have to eat a LOT of fish to cause your baby problems.
Question: What temperature should I keep my Omega 3 on? I left my Omega 3 supplements in my car overnight and the temperature was -17 degrees celcius....is it still safe to take them? I looked on the bottle it doesn't specify the storage temperature.
Answer: omega 3s are ok cold they cannot tolerate much heat or light or they go rancid otherwise they are ok
Question: Which pills are best for a vegetarian who needs her omega 3? I'd also like to keep it somewhat on the cheap side, and tell me where I can buy it too please. If I took a pill though, would I need to also eat other omega 3's or would that be enough?
By the way, I'd rather take flaxseed oil just because fish oil sounds disgusting...lol, but both opinions are welcome.
When I say flaxseed oil, I mean the pills...not the actual oil.
Answer: Just get milled flax seeds. They're really cheap and you can add them to anything. Make sure they are milled and not whole or you'll have to grind them to get all the nutritional benefits. You can find boxes of Hodgson Mill milled flaxseed in the baking aisle of wal mart and most any grocery store.
You can also get lots of things that are fortified with vegetarian sources of Omega 3, like Smart Balance Peanut Butter and the DHA (from algal oil) fortified varieties of Silk soy milk and Horizon Organic cow's milk.
Question: Where can I buy Omega 3 Algae Oil in a store? I want to buy Omega 3 Algae Oil, but I don't know what retail store to look for it in. Is that even possible to buy it in stores, or am I going to have to purchase it online? Thank you.
