Powdered Herbs
Question: Which one is better dried or powdered herbs and spices? Please help. Thanks? Please reply whats best for storage and rubbing.
Thanks for all the reply- though i forget to emphasize that in my country, the fresh is not available all the time. Also i will make this as a xmas gift spice rub and might sell it too.So fresh wont do.I appreciate all the answers.
Answer: Well, both are dried. It's just one is left whole ("dried") and one is ground into dust ("powdered"). The moremanipulation dry spices have, the more flavor they lose. So I'd go w/ dry whole herbs/spices. Grind them yourself if you need them ground.
Question: What is the difference between powdered and dried herbs ? I was looking for a recipes for taco seasoning and one has Powdered Oregano and the other has Dried Oregano. I think it the same, but I thought I would ask.
Answer: They are different. The powdered have been ground to almost a dust, whereas the dried may be whole leafs.
Powdered herbs lose their potency very rapidly. All that surface area is exposed to air and the flavor dissipates. Powdered herbs have a very short shelf life. Don't buy them if you can avoid it.
If you don't have the fresh herb on hand or some in the freezer (most freeze extremely well), use the whole-leaf dried version and grind it in a mortar with a pestle if you need the powdered for a specific recipe.
Sometimes a recipe will use powdered because it will disperse more evenly among the other ingredients if the dish isn't going to be cooked (or cooked long) or allowed to sit for long enough to allow the flavor of the herb in infuse it. Spices are often powdered because their original sources are hard rather than soft leaves like herbs.

Question: Tincture with powdered Herbs? Has anyone made a tincture by powdering their herbs?
Curious, my base is vodka and I am making a blue vervain tincture.
Wondering if perhaps it won;t take 6 weeks for it to finish and also curious if it needs straining when thru, I imagine it must?
Answer: I live in the Philippines now(I'm English) and I regularly make a tincture with vodka + 95% mangosteen peel, fruit and seed + pomello seeds(same as grapefruit seed) + cinnamon + cloves. I use a teaspoon every day for maintaining teeth and gums and I also drink it(1 tspn in water) for energy and to any kill parasites in my gut.
It's far better to make a tincture from fresh ingredients - the tincture will be more powerful. But it is OK to make tinctures from dried herbs, though quite expensive if you have to by them. All my ingredients are locally bought, fresh and extremely cheap.

Question: Can I take powdered Citric Acid to aid in Asborption of Supplements, Vitamins, Herbs & Minerals? After reading a suggested dosage for L-Arginie the instructions stated to drink a carbonated drink for better absorption. I'm not a fan of soda pops and most of the times they go flat by the time I finish drinking one. So could Citric Acid replace that process?
Answer: Personally, I don't recommend drinking carbonated beverages with pills because you're more likely to burp and taste what's in the pill (which is often unappetizing and L-Arginine is no exception).
That being said, you could take the Citric Acid and it might help some minerals a little bit, but not as much as if the minerals were already mixed with the Citric Acid beforehand. They wouldn't be mixed together well enough or long enough to make a huge difference, but it might help a little and the extra Vitamin C (within certain limits) would be good for you anyway. Go for it!

Question: Powdered spices or herbs? How do i keep them stay fresh for months?
thank you...
Answer: Herbs stay fresh only a short time in the refrigerator. You can freeze fresh parsley and dill after washing and drying them. Chop them up and keep them in a container in the freezer. You can also dry herbs after washing by hanging them in the kitchen, or laying them on a paper towel on a cookie sheet in the oven for a few days. Basil, sage, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and mint will dry well and will keep for months in plastic bags or a jar.
If you use fresh herbs from the garden in a recipe use twice as much as you would dried herbs.
Powdwered herbs and spices keep just fine in the jars you buy them in, in a cool dry place, like the kitchen cupboard or pantry.

Your adbise is great!
I tried a web search, but I couldn't find anything. That's why I came here.
I never thought about tasting it raw. That's a really great idea. And the ginger thing- I'm going to try it right now.
Thanks sooo much :)
Sorry, meant advice, not adbise :)
Answer: I would use rubbed sage and the other powdered spices would be fine too. Just add a little and mix and see how it tastes and just add until it tastes the way you want it.
Question: How to grind herbs into a powder? I have a small metal grinder to grind my herbs and then I rub them in between my palms. Does an ok job but doesn't make it a powder and my hands start to hurt after a while. So is there anything else I can use to make a fine powder?
Answer: To turn them into powder you need a good old fashioned mortar and pestle. Preferably in some type of stone (it will be harder to get the fine powder with wooden ones). cooking.com has a good assortment, but any cooking shop worth its salt will have some.
Here is a link with a good assortment and reasonable prices:

Question: What Equipments should i use to Grind Dry Herbs into Fine Powder Form? Can anyone tell me what type of equipments should i use to grind herb leaves & spices into fine powder form? Should I use a coffee grinder, herb grinder, pollen press or something else..? Please let me know. Thanks!!
Answer: I'm sorry, I'm going to take a gamble here and tell you not to grind your herbs like that. It destroys the flavor. Dry them whole, upside down if you can. You can also use a dehydrater if you don't have the room to hang them somewhere. Once dry, you can gently remove the stem and store whole dried leaves in an airtight container (glass is better). When you want to season your food, you should be able to crush the leaves between your palms.
Spices can be ground in a (clean) coffee grinder. Again, wait til you're ready to cook something, don't grind them in advance (unless you're making little gifts for your friends!)
Question: where can i buy fresh herbs, not powder but the real thing in chicago? i am looking to buy fresh herbs such as

Answer: Fresh herbs can be found at Meijers. I give speeches on Edible Herbs and Flowers, and I get mine there. No, Jewel won't have them.
If you want something specific, you need to grow it yourself. Otherwise, Indiana Botanical Garden, Rt. 6, Hobart, IN, is the best, largest, and closest place for quality herbs in the Chi-town area!
Question: can i mix jwh 018 with the same herbs that is in serenity now? I baught all of the same herbs that is in the herbal incence serenity now mixed it.and it did not do anything, I heard that I can mix jwh 018 with it.is it true? Can I just pour the powder over the herbs and smoke it?
Answer: you have to dissolve it in either alcohol, ethanol, or acetone. alcohol won't completely dissolve it, but it will work, only put in enough to wet the herbs, so it sticks the undissolved better, then set to dry for a day or 2 depending on how much you made.
Question: I made the mistake of buying some herbs that were supposed to be put into capsules...? I don't have empty capsules, and how are you supposed to fill the little capsules, anyway? I thought I could just mix the powdered herbs with water and drink it down, but they are pretty nasty.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I'm pregnant, so I can't mix them with whiskey, or anything like that.
Thanks!
Answer: Just go to a health store and buy the capsule maker and capsules. They're really cheap, and incredibly easy to do.
