Question: How can I ensure relief donations for Haiti are used most directly and effectively for those in need? I want to donate for Haiti relief. Which Haiti relief organization offers best return per dollar to victims and those in need? How can I ensure my donation funds are implemented most effectively? And which humanitarian aid organization gives the highest percentage to program services?
Answer: The Red Cross has more than 100 years of experience in helping those in disasters, from war zones to house fires. It is very careful to honor donor specifications for every gift. If you specify it will go to Haiti, it will.
HOWEVER, think carefully about what the downside is to insisting on "highest percentage to program services":
In order to respond quickly to disasters, people and resources already need to be in place. That means that BEFORE the earthquake, the Red Cross already had to have offices, people, and warehouses with supplies paid for. (Who do you suppose was in the office, answering phones, the day of the quake?)
Very little of that is donated spontaneously, because there is nothing in the news to encourage donations of boring but very necessary goods. The Red Cross constantly has to raise funds to purchase all this.
An office needs electricity, water, heat, computers, printers, software, etc. A warehouse needs electricity, climate control, forklifts, etc. Vehicles need gas, tires, maintenance, insurance, etc. Staff are needed to process and account for donations, order supplies, manage receipt and distribution, and coordinate volunteers and communications. They need living wages and health insurance.
All of these require money that cannot come from a restricted donation, and are all "administrative expenses." This is why a general fund is critical to the running of a solid organization.
It is possible for an organization to be broke and have to lay off people, but have lots of money in restricted "program services." That is not healthy for the organization or the people it wants to serve. The Red Cross learned a lot from 9/11 and Katrina. There is a very sturdy internal control and ethics function, and every volunteer must pass a criminal background check. Question: Are international aid and relief charities making a positive difference in the world? I want to donate money to an international aid and relief charity. Are international aid and relief charities making a positive difference in the world?
Answer: This question is right up my alley because I know for certain that the charity I am about to recommend has achieved measurable results. If you want to donate money to an international relief charity, give it to Lions Clubs International (The International Association of Lions Clubs, 300 22nd St, Oak Brook, IL 06523-8890).
From the moment Helen Keller appealed to the Lions to become “Knights of the Blind in this crusade against blindness” in 1925, Lions in America have dedicated themselves to serving the blind and the deaf in their communities and abroad. Now there are Lions Clubs in 190 countries.
Through their fund-raising efforts, Lions Clubs International works to eradicate preventable blindness in America and throughout the world. Cataract, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, trachoma, and river blindness — all of these cause preventable blindness.
Since 1990 the Lions’ blindness-prevention and eye-health programs have improved, saved, or protected the vision of more than 100 million people around the world in both industrial and developing nations. River blindness, for example, is almost totally eradicated in the Western hemisphere.
Now in a massive fundraising project ("Project SightFirst II"), Lions have targeted Africa, working hand-in-hand with the Carter Foundation to save the vision of an estimated 37 million people. President Jimmy Carter, a Lion for 53 years, says, “The world is full of difficult problems. Preventable blindness should not be one of them.”

Question: What pain relief medicine should i buy for extracting my wisdom teeth? I just extracted two of my bottom wisdom teeth and i the doctor didn't give me a prescription for pain relief medicine. Can you guys recommend what i should get?
Answer: As a dentist myself I always recommend Motrin (Ibuprofen), this is the best Over The Counter pain reliever as it will not only help with pain but will also help with inflammation. I usually recommend that my patients take between 600-800mg for ages over 18. Also try an ice pack, this will help numb the area affected and help with inflammation as well. If the pain becomes severe you may want to consider calling your dentists emergency number for advice or to have him/her call you in some narcotic pain medication. Good luck and feel better soon!
Question: Are pain relief tablets safe to eat when taken out of their bottles? I'm planning to take a few pain relief pills (Tylenol, Motrin) out of their bottles and putting them in a sealed Ziploc bag for convenience. Does taking them out of their bottles reduce the effectiveness of the pills? Are they still safe to eat?
I figure it will be okay because they will still be put into a sealed bag, but any information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Answer: Putting the pills in a plastic bag won't hurt the pill or it's effectiveness. However, whenever possible you should leave medication in it's original, labeled bottle. This will prevent you from mixing the medications up and overdosing, a child from thinking it's candy and taking it, and other adults from taking the wrong thing. If I were you, I'd leave the medication in it's original bottle if at all possible.
Question: How often will the pressure relief lift on a hot water heater and for what reason? I saw a small puddle under the dryer and the relief pipe end was moist. I have never noticed that before. What would cause the relief to be lifting in this hot water tank? It is an electric hot water tank.
Answer: The pressure relief valve works on both temperature and pressure, normally it will not lift unless there is excess pressure on the system, or your temperature is set too high on the water heater.
Sometimes if a backflow preventer has been installed, the pressure valve will lift because there is no room for expansion in your plumbing pipes and you may need to install an expansion tank. Also the valve could be old or defective and need to be replaced.
Question: What did work relief programs do during the Great Depression? Franklin D Roosevelt started many work relief programs to help decrease unemployment during the Great Depression in the 1930's. These included Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA), National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) and the National Recovery Administration (NRA).
Does anyone know what these programs did for unemployed people or how the programs worked?
Answer: I couldn't disagree more with the above answer. The programs provided much needed jobs during and immediately following the depression, it cleared the lands and areas for many state and national parks, most of which are in existence today, it provided roads, drainage and infrastructure to allow more people to live a better life, and several groups like the CCC which was para-militarily organized provided a nucleus of disciplined leaders for the countries military prior to WWII.

Question: How will you be given your tax relief money? I filed my taxes on friday however turbo tax told me they were waiting to process until feb 11th due to this tax relief....does this mean my add'l 600.00 from bush will be added to my tax money I am already getting back by direct deposit??? Or are they going to be mailed???
I dont care to hear what people think about this whole tax relief thing I just want to know if anyone knows how it is going to be sent.
Thanks!
Answer: Starting in May, the Treasury will begin sending stimulus payments to more than 130 million individuals. The stimulus payments will go out through the late spring and summer.
The vast majority of people receiving a payment only need to file a 2007 tax return as they normally would. The IRS will then do all the rest, including determining eligibility and payment amounts.
This was copied from the www.irs.gov website "Rebate Questions."
I don't think your hold up is for the rebate as they won't start it until May. I also don't think the congress has made a decission on the amount of the rebats yet.
Question: Why will the government not send tax relief checks to college students being claimed as a dependent? Why are we left out? Do they think we're not good enough for the money? There has to be a logical explanation. It seems to me that college students would benefit from tax relief just as much as adults with kids or single parents, if not more, considering a lot of us only work part time jobs and are going to school to make something of ourselves. No offense to anybody else. I think everyone should receive tax relief except for non citizens, illegal aliens, and extremely wealthy people.
Answer: It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense, but that's the way they wrote the rule. The initial plan as it went to Congress appeared to include anyone who qualified on the basis of income, but that's not how the bill finally emerged.
But don't despair. While you will be ineligible for a rebate if you are claimed as a dependent, you may still benefit under the plan.
While the rebate depends on your 2007 status and income, it is actually a rebate toward your 2008 taxes. According to the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, taxes would be cut in 2008 from 10 percent to zero percent on the first $6,000 dollars of taxable income for individual taxpayers.
So if you have taxable income in 2008, you will see a tax cut when you file in 2009.

Question: What is the best relief for flea bite itching? My daughter seems to have a few flea bites from a recent visit to a relatives house. Any ideas on how to relief the itching? Over the counter cremes don't seem to be doing the trick.
Answer: Put her in a bathtub with some baking soda and some Epsom salt. The baking soda will relieve the itching. And the Epsom salt will help dry them up to start in healing. My daughter went through this all summer one year. I felt so bad cause she really liked this little girl, but her bites were terrible. Good luck.
Question: How can I get relief from a jewelry rash? I got these two great necklaces the other day from Urban Outfitters and ever since I've worn them I have this nasty rash around my neck and on my chest. What's be best route for quick relief? And how can I make it go away over time, fast?
Answer: Sounds like you have an allergy to either the nickel in the center that was painted over, or the cheap plastic coat paint they covered it up with.
I would try benadryl as well as the topical rub. You can visit or call a local pharmacy and they can tell you the quickest working one.
Take the jewelry back.
First, make sure you emailed the company, (store you bought at) at the corporate office right from the website, with the information off the jewelry tags so they are aware of the crap they are selling. They could end up in a huge lawsuit; perhaps they will pull the stuff off their shelves and get a better quality of accessories, even if it isn't all 100% real.
As for you, stick with the fabric (leather or crochet strands) or sterling. If you have recently developed the rashes and all of your fake jewelry starts to bother you, you can easily apply a clear nail polish to earrings, rings, and chains. It will have to be re-applied over time.
Even glasses will make some people break out.
