Question: How is it that soda towers ALWAYS know to stop when your cup is full? I work at a movie theater and I pour soda all the time. I put the cup on the grill of the soda tower, it slides down and hits a tab, and the soda tower dispenses soda just until the soda reaches the top of the cup. The soda DOES NOT spill over. The tower just KNOWS that it has to stop. So I thought maybe that the slant of the grill, the shape of the cups or the weight of the beverage had something to do with this ability, however I can assure you that none of these are factors. I've tested a variety of cup shapes and weights, and have applied varying amounts of force to the tab on the soda tower, and still, the soda has always stopped coming out just before the container would overflow. Although actually I tried filling up a bowl one time and the soda overflowed... But the soda tower is nonetheless incredibly mysterious and I would be so happy if someone could please explain how it knows how full my cup is. Thanks so much.
Answer: um when you tell it what cup your using, it knows the amount of liquid to put in the cup to fill it!
same with those coffee machines, that don't spill the coffee, it knows the cup size, and how much drink per size...
Question: What is soda, when asked for in american films and television programmes? In American programmes and films they often ask for a soda or diet soda. As an english man i would assume they were asking for soda water, but that is a very odd thing to want to drink without alcohol. Thankyou.
Answer: "soda" refers to any carbonated drink in america, such as coca-cola, dr. pepper, or pepsi. i suppose it is odd for us to refer to it as just "soda" instead of by name.
hope this helps
Question: How can I make my soda go flat without having to wait several hours? I personally love my soda flat. It's when soda is without all the bubbles and it has a different taste. If you leave an open soda out for about three or more hours, it will taste flat. But does anyone know how I can make my soda flat without having to wait so long? And why does it go flat, anyway?
Answer: buy a 12 pack of it, open all 12 cans and drink it flat.
~
Or a couple of cases, and then after that first hour, you can drink tasteless flat soda to your
hearts content.
Question: Can i use baking soda instead of baking powder when baking sugar cookies? It is my first time baking sgar cookies from scratch, and the recipes i found online says use baking powder. The thing is i only have baking soda. As i am typing this question, i see that another person has asked if they could use baking powder instead of baking soda, my real question is, Can i use baking soda for my sugar cookies and does it work both ways of using the baking suppliment.
Answer: Sugar Cookies Recipe
1 large egg
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, slightly soft
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus as needed
For Decorating:
1 cup confectioners' sugar
About 1 tablespoon milk
Food coloring, if desired
Sprinkles, candies, cored sugar as desired
Whisk the egg and vanilla in a small bowl and set aside.
With a hand held mixer in a large bowl, cream the butter until fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula, add both sugars, and continue beating until light, 2 to 3 minutes. Scrape the sides of the bowl again, if needed, then add the egg mixture, beating for about 1 minute. Sift the salt with the flour. Reduce the mixer to a low speed and then add the flour mixture, mixing just until blended.
Turn the dough out of the bowl. Divide the dough in half and place each half between 2 pieces of lightly floured parchment or waxed paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough into a disk about 1/4-inch thick. Slide the dough/parchment sheet onto a flat cookie sheet, or on the back of a rimmed baking sheet. Refrigerate until firm, about 2 hours or overnight.
Evenly space the racks in the oven and preheat to 325 degrees F. Place 1 disk of the cookie dough on a clean work surface and peel off the top sheet of paper. Cut cookies with a 1 1/2-inch round or a decorative shaped cookie cutter directly on the parchment. Use a spatula to transfer the cookies to a parchment-lined or non-stick baking sheet, spacing them about 1-inch apart. Repeat with other sheet of dough. Any excess dough can be re-rolled, refrigerated, and cut.
Bake until the edges of the cookies are a light golden, about 15 minutes. Transfer cookies to a rack to cool.
For decorating: Whisk the confectioners' sugar with just enough milk to make a thick icing. Transfer icing to a small plastic bag. Press the icing into a corner of the bag and snip off the corner with scissors to make a small opening. Gently press the icing onto the cookie to make a simple pattern. Decorate as desired. Set aside for about 1 hour to let the icing harden.
Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Variations:
Walnut Orange: Add 3/4 teaspoon grated zest of orange with the sugar, and 2/3 cup finely chopped walnuts with the flour.
Pecan-Cinnamon: Mix 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon with the flour, and add 2/3 cup finely chopped pecans with the flour. Sprinkle the tops of the cookies before baking with a mixture of 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon.
Almond: Reduce the vanilla extract to 1 teaspoon and add 1/2 teaspoon pure almond extract. Add 3/4 cup chopped toasted sliced almonds to the dough with the flour. If desired, for decoration, brush the tops of the unbaked cookies with some egg white and press a few un-toasted almond slices onto the top of each cookie prior to baking.
Chewy Sugar Cookies Recipe
You can also roll the cookies in the sugar sprinkles before baking.
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup softened butter
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
Sprinkles or colored sugar, for decorating
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Add enough of the buttermilk to moisten the dough and make it soft, not wet.
Roll rounded teaspoons of dough into balls and place on a ungreased cookie sheet. With a brush or fingers, moisten the top of each cookie with the remaining buttermilk and slightly flatten the top of each cookie. Sprinkle with raw sugar or colored sprinkles.
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until slightly golden. Let stand for 2 minutes before removing to cool on a rack.
Flower Sugar Cookies
Cookies:
1 cup unsalted butter, slightly softened
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 large egg
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus additional for rolling out dough
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
Icing:
1/4 cup water
3 tablespoons egg white powder
2 cups confectioners' sugar
Sprinkles, chocolate chips, candies, or colored sugars, as desired
For the cookies: Beat the butter in a large bowl with a handheld mixer until fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, add brown sugar, and continue beating until light, 2 to 3 minutes. Add egg and vanilla extract, beating until smooth. Gradually add the 2 cups flour and salt while mixing slowly to make a rough dough. Press dough into a ball by hand. Lightly dust the cookie dough with flour and roll it between 2 pieces of waxed paper into a 1/4-inch-thick disk. Slide the disk in the paper onto a cookie sheet and freeze until firm, about 20 minutes (or refrigerate about 1 hour).
Evenly space the racks in the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F.
Transfer the dough to the work surface and remove the top sheet of paper. Cut into cookies with a 4-inch flower or other decorative cutter and transfer them to a parchment-lined or nonstick baking sheet. Press excess dough together and roll and cut into cookies as well. Bake until cookies' edges are golden, about 20 minutes. Cool on a rack.
For the icing: Whisk the water and egg white powder in a medium bowl until foamy and smooth. Gradually whisk in the confectioners' sugar to make a smooth icing. Spread a layer of icing over the entire surface of the cookies (or just in the center, if desired) with the back of a teaspoon. Place sprinkles, chocolate chips, or candies in the center of the cookies. Let rest until the icing sets, about 30 minutes.

Question: What is the most innovative thing you have used baking soda for? Hey guys, I just covored up scratches in my kitchen counter by rubbing baking soda down in them, when I put a box of baking soda in the fridge all the odors go away, my mom used to draw bee stings out of my skin with baking soda paste, I drink baking soda and water when I have a stomach ache, and I've actually stopped a urinary tract infection from forming by topically applying baking soda/water paste to you know where. I know it's wierd, but it worked, okay? (if you ever try it yourself, make sure you rinse VERY well after about 20 min or it can irritate you very bad. Also, make sure to use the usual remedies at the same time, (drink lots of water and cranberry juice and all that jazz.)) So, now that I've told my strangest, most innovative, and perhaps most embarassing baking soda miracle stories, let's hear what baking soda has done for you!
WOW! These are all such amazing answers! I'm going to leave it open and hope that the answers keep coming. We've got some great ideas here! Thanks!
Answer: I usually buy 20 or so boxes (it is very inexpensive) of the no name brand and use it in the swimming pool.....beats the price of buying Ph increaser and is more natural.
Question: Does baking soda mixed with water make you throw up? Does baking soda mixed with water make you throw up?
Well I had a gas cramp in my stomach. My mom told me to get a half a teaspoon of baking soda and mix it with a inch of water and drink it...
And hour later or so I threw up.
Sorry. I didn't know exactly what category to put this in.
Answer: Read your baking soda box. It will say something about using it as an upset stomach remedy.
Also when I was a kid my mom used water, vinegar and baking powder to help relieve an upset stomach. Believe me it made one burp and could also cause you to throw up.
Question: Can I use baking soda as a replacement for bicarbonate of soda in a recipe? I haven't got any bicarbonate of soda, so can I use baking soda instead?
Thanks.
Sorry I meant baking powder!
Answer: Baking soda IS bicarbonate of soda, so it will work fine.
Bicarbonate is just the chemical/scientific name.
Question: Can mixing vinegar and baking soda bleach or fade clothes? I've been adding baking soda in with my regular laundry detergent, and vinegar in a downy ball. I spilled some vinegar on the baking soda, it fizzed up and wasn't a big deal. Now I've noticed some faded/bleached out spots on some of my clothes. Could the reaction between the vinegar and the baking soda have caused this?
Answer: It very well could have. Vinegar is an acid, baking soda is a base, so they react when used together. I use them together, along with salt, to clean sink drains. Your best bet might be to use one or the other in a load, but not both. Good luck!
Question: Can I use bicarbonate of soda instead of baking soda? In a blueberry muffin's recipe can I use bicarb of soda instead of baking soda and will it change the taste at all - thanks!
I meant baking powder!
Answer: Baking Powder and Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of Soda) are two different entities. If the recipe calls for the powder then you should use the powder. If you don't have any then buy some or borrow it from a neighbor.
Question: What about the carbonation in soda makes it explode when shaken? I am doing a science fair project on whether or not the darkness of a soda (like root beer compared to sprite) will have a difference in explosion. So, what does shaking a soda have to do with the carbonation making the soda explode?
Answer: Shaking a carbonated beverage releases the heterogeneous mixture of carbonate and the flavored water. When the carbonate is released from the liquid, it has not where to go but up and out of the container because the pressure in the container isn't great enough to put the carbonate back in the liquid. It is a physical change in the same way you can evaporate salt water and have salt residue left over.
Question: How do I get baking soda out of the steam holes in my iron? OK, so I needed to clean the sole plate of my iron. I Googled "clean an iron" and found a web page that advised using a paste of baking soda and water to clean the sole plate. I did that, and the sole plate is clean, but the baking soda paste stuck in the steam holes in the sole plate. I've already spent half an hour with a toothpick trying to get the baking soda out. There's got to be a better way!
Answer: Get an old towel, fill the iron with water and a bit of viniger, and crank it to it's highest setting. Then iron the towel until the water runs out and this should clean the holes out. keep doing this til it is to your likings. If that doesn't work you can always try a toothbrush or pipecleaner . Hope this Helps ;)
Question: How much can you save on soda by having a soda fountain in your house? What is the price difference?
Answer: Wow, do you really drink that much soda?!
According to this article, the fountain--for this person-works out to $1.12 for 2 Liters of his or her fountain soda.

I didn't know you could have an at-home fountain.
Question: Is there a recipe for cream soda flavored truffles / chocolates / candies? I'd like to try making my own box of hand-dipped and hand-decorated chocolates. One of my favorite beverages is cream soda. Is there any sort of vanilla or cream soda flavored candy/truffle I could make easily without a bunch of crazy ingredients?
It might be cute to make a molded candy shaped like a soda bottle, but I could just as easily (and preferably) work with a hand-made type ball shaped candy, so recipes for either way would be awesome.
Answer: Didnt jellybellies have a cream soda flavour? Anyway, Im pretty stumped unless youre willing to experiment at youre own peril!
Its possible caramelise soda in a pot. Start with sugar in a pot, how much is up to you, let it cook until golden brown and caramelised, add some soda ATTENTION it will IMMEDIATELY bubble like fury! Stand back! And after you can dip just about anything into it with a fork and you will a caramelised coating. Other than that Im not sure if you can get Cream soda essence. You could replace it in popular truffle etc. recipes for the vanilla essence.
However I do have this for a cake version, easier to shape too...
CREAM SODA CAKE
Ingredients:-
180 g butter
3 large eggs
90 g castor sugar
1 tsp vanilla or lemon essence
240 g flour
1 tsp baking power
1 cup ice cream soda
Method:-
Beat butter until light and creamy. In a separate bowl whisk eggs and castor sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in beaten butter and essence. Carefully fold in sifted flour and baking powder alternately with ice cream soda.
Pour mixture into a 21 cm round cake tin lined with greased greaseproof paper. Bake in a moderate oven for 35 mins or until cooked when tested with a skewer.
Good luck
