Answer: The large, hollow organs of the digestive tract contain a layer of muscle that enables their walls to move. The movement of organ walls can propel food and liquid through the system and also can mix the contents within each organ. Food moves from one organ to the next through muscle action called peristalsis. Peristalsis looks like an ocean wave traveling through the muscle. The muscle of the organ contracts to create a narrowing and then propels the narrowed portion slowly down the length of the organ. These waves of narrowing push the food and fluid in front of them through each hollow organ.
The first major muscle movement occurs when food or liquid is swallowed. Although you are able to start swallowing by choice, once the swallow begins, it becomes involuntary and proceeds under the control of the nerves.
Swallowed food is pushed into the esophagus, which connects the throat above with the stomach below. At the junction of the esophagus and stomach, there is a ringlike muscle, called the lower esophageal sphincter, closing the passage between the two organs. As food approaches the closed sphincter, the sphincter relaxes and allows the food to pass through to the stomach.
The stomach has three mechanical tasks. First, it stores the swallowed food and liquid. To do this, the muscle of the upper part of the stomach relaxes to accept large volumes of swallowed material. The second job is to mix up the food, liquid, and digestive juice produced by the stomach. The lower part of the stomach mixes these materials by its muscle action. The third task of the stomach is to empty its contents slowly into the small intestine.
Several factors affect emptying of the stomach, including the kind of food and the degree of muscle action of the emptying stomach and the small intestine. Carbohydrates, for example, spend the least amount of time in the stomach, while protein stays in the stomach longer, and fats the longest. As the food dissolves into the juices from the pancreas, liver, and intestine, the contents of the intestine are mixed and pushed forward to allow further digestion.
Finally, the digested nutrients are absorbed through the intestinal walls and transported throughout the body. The waste products of this process include undigested parts of the food, known as fiber, and older cells that have been shed from the mucosa. These materials are pushed into the colon, where they remain until the feces are expelled by a bowel movement.

Question: can cutting dairy from your diet improve acne? I heard that milk can cause acne because the hormones that are in it. Should I assume the same for cheeses? If the hormones come from the cows, should I avoid all dairy products (milk, yogurt, cheese) and beef/steak too?
I tried to cut dairy out of my diet to see if my skin would improve at all, but I've realized it's very difficult to avoid cheese in a college cafeteria.
Answer: hmm. uh. i havent heard this one before. i dont think so. but if you do eat alot of dairy foods. you should try to cut back to see if it helps. because everyone's body reacts different to everything.

Question: Hormones and their impact.? I am a transsexual woman and have been on hormones for over 18 months now. I am in my early 20s and have seen a huge impact hormones have had on my body. My legs are smoother and sexier, I have womanly hips, butt and have developed reasonable sized breasts. Even my face appears more feminine and my hair is longer and softer.
The interesting thing is the other developments. Not just the obvious things like I am a lot more emotional but I have seen small silly changes like when out eating previously I would have had steak, chips and a beer now I want a salad and a glass of white wine, I am far more interested in gossip, at work I have opted for a secretarial role etc. Basically I am assuming a female mental as well as physical role. I am interested to hear how hormones have impacted other's mental state.
Finally I have noticed a change in my sexuality. I had always thought I would be a lesbian but I am becoming more and more attracted to guys and less and less to girls. I have had to admit to myself I am now a heterosexual woman.

Answer: Well, I'm an FTM, so kind of in the boat headed the other way, but I wanted to answer with my perspective. I started testosterone a bit over 10 months ago. Before, I was very emotionally labile. Now, I'm more confident, and have what I feel is a more male mindset. I guess I'm more stubborn in a stereotypically male way. Before, I was only attracted to women, and considered myself straight. Now, I find myself attracted a lot to men as well. My theory is that by becoming more comfortable with who I am and with my body, I was able to feel safe enough to acknowledge my attraction to men. I also eat like a guy too, minus the beer. I don't drink! But I eat big full meals like a stereotypical man.
Question: What's wrong with Bovine Growth Hormone? I've heard about bovine growth hormones (BGH) in articles and Ben & Jerry's prides themselves in making their icecream out of milk from cows that havent been given BGH, but why is that good? What's wrong with BGH that you wouldnt want to eat a steak or drink milk from a cow given BGH?

Question: how can i get really healthy? i recently started on a new birth control and it has made my hormones crazy and my apetiete so unpredictable. Just to clear things up, the vegetarian/vegan diet is not composed of salads, vegetables, fruit and fake meat. Fruits and vegetables are always important but they DO NOT make up the largest portion of any healthy diet.
A balanced plant-based diet includes grains(breads, pasta, rice,cereal), legumes(soy, beans, peas, lentils), fruit and vegetables.

Technically the term "vegetarian" does imply that you don't consume anything that comes from the body of an animal that requires killing it. Many ingredients such as gelatin and glycerin are found in many candies, Fig-Newtons, and many of other foods as well as rennet found in many cheeses.

The best thing to remember is to take your time so that for example: when you are comfortable not eating beef and pork you can then give up chicken when you are sure you can make the commitment permanently.
Depending on your age or reliance on parents or regional options, it may not be best to give yourself a label. The important thing is to do your best to make progress and be committed to your compassion towards animals. Never put your focus onto what you or other people use to describe yourself.
If you meet someone that talks down to people for eating meat, dairy, etc or to you because they think they are "more veg" than you, laugh in their face and tell them they are a disgrace to the entire philosophy. People like this only hurt the idea of veg*ism AND the animals. The point of all of this is to live compassionately and and as free from cruelty as you can, all the while maintaining your health and a positive attitude. People who don't maintain either, need not open their mouths and represent our beliefs.

Lunch: VEGAN "SAUSAGE" SANDWICHES, sandwiches with vegan deli slices(Tofurkey is the only one that's kinda funky), fruit, dinner leftovers, couscous salad, vegan sushi, potato or pasta salad.
Dinner: sloppy joes, "sausage" and gravy with homemade biscuits, Spaghetti and Trader Joe's "meatballs" or TVP, lasagna, Thai pad see ew, pad khi mao(drunkard's noodles), pad prig king, tofu+eggplant with basil sauce, yellow thai curry with tofu or vegan chikn and veggies and jasmine rice, Indian dal with homemade roti or dosai, channa masala, aloo gobi, vegetable or minestrone soup, pizza, STEAMED "PORK" BUNS with potstickers or spring rolls, sweet&sour/orange/lemon chikn, vegan pho or wonton soup, baked tofu, BBQ homemade seitan (tastes like BBQ'd ribs), kabobs

Question: Are the Steaks used in famous hotels or fancy steakhouse safe? Do they use more safe beef with no additives and hormones than regular fast food or restaurants? Where can I eat out that is better than garbage used at McDonalds and etc?
Answer: you can get steaks and meat like that from a good butcher... or you would be hard pressed to find a restaurant wit them, you can get them though, but the better places just have the best cuts, sometimes naturally grown but still with preservatives for hygeine....

Question: Can the hormones they give animals make humans fatter/bigger by eatting the meat? I've read that the hormones they pump into cows, pigs, and chicken can make humans gain weight. Is this true? Has anyone noticed that vegans are smaller/weigh less then people who eat meat?
My brother eats alot of beef and he is really big (muscular and hearty). Could this be connected to all the beef he eats (he eats probably 3 steaks a day and 2 hamburgers)
I know a woman who adopted a child (when she was 3 months old) from South America, she feeds the baby tofu/soy instead of beef/milk because she does not want the little girl to get fat/develop prematurely. Do you think this can be prevented by making the child a vegan? (She feeds the baby plenty of beans and other foods so the child is not missing vitamins or any essential things meat would give the baby)
Answer: Yes, hormones, in the food that you are eating of course have an effect on your body.
The meat and dairy industry wants to make as much money as possible, therefore makes the animals on average 3 times their normal size. When you eat that animal, those hormones are still there. Hence in the last 50 years you see so many fat people walking around.
If you buy your eat from a local farmer that does not feed the animal hormones that is a little better, but most of your meat is from the super markets and fast food places, which really do not care about your health, but wish to make more money.
Edit:- being a vegan at any stage of life is great, as long as all the healthy foods are eaten. but that is applicable to any type food diet.

Question: What are the real hazards? Eating a rare steak. I mean bloody rare. Is there a real health hazard? I'm sure undercooked meat has bacteria but what kind? and what about the hormones and steriods the cattle are given? Digestional problems? Long term?

Answer: the interior of a muscle tissue is virtualy sterile if properly handled it is so safe that you can eat it raw. with improper handling the surface can becme quite hevily contaminated and thus be unsafe. as for paracites, no worry if it is american beef or pork, no paracites will be present.
hormones, steroids and antibiotics are a different issue... yucky stuff. buy quality beef from a reputable market, or go with organic, there is litte more you can do besides raise your own beef.
Question: anyone have trouble sleeping after eating steaks or red meats? My wife and I have studied our food intake for the past two years to try to lose weight and so on. We have come to the conclusion that something like hormones or antibiotics in the cows meat keeps us awake at night and gives us many more dreams and nightmares.

Becky went on to talk about her son and other people and how they lose weight, about diabetes, and people (in general) chemistry make-up. And when Becky was much younger she weighed 98 pounds and now Becky is fat. Also Becky suggested Christina should eat salads to get fat. And when Christina told Becky that Christina has low blood pressure Becky said maybe the reason why Christina got thinner is because Christina has low blood pressure and Christina is losing fluid.

Answer: Prime beef is thoroughly and evenly marbled with fat in it which makes it more tender and juicy than select.
Above Prime would be Prime Certified Angus Beef and WAY above that would be the Kobe beef, which typically retails for $100/pound or more and is often eaten raw.
