Substitue
Question: is it possible to substitue butter for shortening here? hi, i am making shortbread cookies and it calls for 1/4 cup of butter and 1/4 cup of shortening. i don't have shortening on hand, so is it possible to substitue butter for the shortening?
Answer: Go ahead an substitute, but your cookies may turn out a bit differently. Butter has a "sharp" melting point meaning that adjusting the temperature by just a few degrees makes the butter go from a solid state to a liquid state. This means that the cookies are more likely to spread. Shortening doesn't melt as fast, so the cookies have a chance to cook a bit more without spreading. You can mitigate the spreading by making sure your dough is really cold when you put it in the oven.
Good luck!

Question: How can i substitue rum in a cake? Well i have this recipe i want to try, problem is that I don't want to add the 3 tbsp of rum that it lists. Is there anything else that i can substitue in its stead? By the way its a chocolate pound cake
Answer: You could add vanilla extract or another extract of some kind. I wouldn't omit it entirely, but I might cut it down to a teaspoon or a teaspoon and a half.
The do make rum extract which is silly. As soon as the cake hits 180 degrees F, the cake will lose any alcohol it did have.

Answer: Yes, you can but almond would definitely be better.
I used to make cherry pie at home and finally realized it was a lot of work and the pies were never that great. Then one day my friend told me to buy pies online at Tootie Pie Co.. I ordered their cherry pie and peach pie. WOW! They are awesome!!! Nothing is better than these home delivered fruit pies. YUM!
Question: What is a guitar chord substitue for F Sharp Minor? Hello, I am trying to learn to play a song that requires an F Sharp minor, and unfortunately I am not good enough to play bar chords yet. Is there any chord that is a close substitue / sound similiar to an F sharp minor I might be able to try?
Answer: How dare you try to replace F# minor! Its tenacity is unparalleled, and there simply is no substitute for a good F# minor.
That guy's as close to right as you can be, which I still think is crossing the line. If you bar the top three strings, mute the fourth, let the A ring open, and bring your thumb over the top to fret the second fret it would do the trick... Then again, that might be where you're having difficulty in the first place.

Question: Can I substitue yogurt or cream for water in a pastry recipe? I was thinking it would give it better flavor.
I mean, the water is just called for to add moisture right?
I just think that sometimes I can *taste* the water in a pastry.
Answer: No...this would add proteins and fats to the recipe, not just moisture. It would throw of the chemistry of the recipe and it would probably make the pastry hard and flat, and might make it burn.
You can however, improvise on any custard or filling. Once you know the basic ingredients of them, you can mix and match some of the flavorings.

Question: What would be a good substitue for Tonkin Bamboo for making a flyrod besides a graphite blank? Is there another type of bamboo that is easily accessible and cheap?
I want a natural rod though, not graphite.
Answer: no. buy the tonkin and build yourself a great rod. there is no other substitute.
OR:
if you saw the movie "a river runs through it", it looked like they were using traditional cane. they WERE NOT.
they were using a hexagonal graphite rod made from strips of graphite and aeronautical foam giving them the look and feel of traditional split cane.
these are awesome, beautiful rods. my next flyrod is going to be one of these beauties to put one of my abel reels on.

Question: Can I substitue oat bran with rolled oats? I have a recipe for banana muffins and it says I need oat bran. Can I use rolled oats instead?
Answer: The only oat bran I've ever seen isn't a powder; but, if it is--YES!
Simply put the rolled oats into a coffee grinder, like Krupps, and voila, you have your powder.
It might take a few tries; but, it should work.
I once made a carrot cake that way; someone stole the second one from the potluck, so . . .
I would suggest slightly watering down the mixture if it is too "solid," and perhaps as a watering down additive: try apple juice. Usually great for muffins and/or anyting w/oats.
