Substitutes
Question: substitutes? how much does a substitute teacher make in a year
and is it true that all you need is 2 years of college with ANY degree (doesn't have to be education) because one of my substitute teachers was a college student in his 3rd year of a physical therapy major
Answer: It depends on where you live. Schools try to balance their need for maximizing substitute teacher credentials, with availability of people to actually do the work.
My district is very rural. We have substitutes with only a high school diploma, but we "level" rank the subs... High school and not much experience is Level 1, college credits and/or moderate experience is Level 2, college degree and/or lots of experience is Level 3.
I worked as a sub, before becoming a full teacher, in a different district near a university. To be a sub, you had to have 60 college credits for their Level 1, and a college degree for their Level 2. Level 1 got paid $45/day, and Level 2 got paid $60/day.
The credits can be in any subject, because a substitute does not have to plan instruction or be responsible for long-term learning. They only need to continue the teacher's plans already in place, and maintain classroom discipline.

Question: Are there any substitutes for vanilla extract? I am trying to bake a Silver White Cake. I have all the ingredients except vanilla extract. Are there any substitutes? Or does it even work without the vanilla extract?
Answer: You could use another extract in its place say almond, butter flavored, or rum extract.
Question: Is there any substitutes for only egg yolks? I am making a no-bake dessert and need to mix egg yolks with whipped topping. Are there any substitutes for only the egg yolks- and do EggBeaters work if I only need the yolk?
The recipe is an angel food cake- topped with egg yolk and whipped topping- and butterfinger candy. Then it's frozen, not baked. If anyone has an alternative recipe for something similar- I would appreciate it.
Answer: I agree with Dan. You need to rethink your dessert. There are many older recipes that are considered dangerous and out of date now because they do call for raw egg products. The other solution would be to buy pasturized eggs and use the yolks from them but again, be very careful. You would hate to be the cause of a mass exodus to the ER after eating your dessert.

Question: Do you know any good substitutes for olives in recipes? I have several recipes that sound wonderful (chicken caccitore; homemade veggie pizza, etc) except for the olives. We really don't like olives, and these recipes sound too good to just throw out otherwise. Any suggestions for substitutes that would complement these sort of dishes without reminding us of olives in taste or texture? Thank you.
Answer: Just leave them out all together. You may need a little more salt, but I wouldn't worry about it. The recipe should be fine without them.

Please no butter or other dairy products. That's the same as milk!
Answer: INGREDIENTS
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch pan. In a heavy saucepan combine the 1/3 cup of flour and water. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until thick. Transfer to a mixing bowl and set aside to cool.
In a small saucepan, melt butter. When butter has melted, add the cocoa and mix until smooth; set aside to cool. Beat the sugar and vanilla into the cooled flour mixture. Stir in the cocoa mixture until well blended. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt, stir into the batter until just blended. Fold in walnuts if desired. Spread evenly in the prepared pan.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool before cutting into bars.
Question: What are the best natural substitutes for sugar? I hate all those sugar substitutes like splenda...etc. But I am taking sugar out of my diet, and wanted to make muffins. The recipe calls for a sugar substitute. Is there anything natural and healthy for me to use as a sweetener. I've heard of using "raw honey". I also thought of using fruit. Just wondering what kind of other ideas people have!
Answer: Stevia, agave, molasses, maple syrup
Question: Are there any substitutes for guinea pig bedding that is cheaper and easier to clean? I have two guinea pigs. If you have one or more of these furry little guys too, then you know how dirty their cage can get. I usually use Care Fresh bedding in their cage, but it is very expensive and scatters easily. I've heard about using fleece which is a lot cheaper but it stinks up a lot more and is hard to switch out. Are there any substitutes besides fleece and bedding? Or maybe a cheaper brand of bedding that works just as well?
Answer: If you go to Feed and seed stores you can get a huge bag of pine bedding for $6.00 to $7.00, with one cage it will last you for several months. I have 4 huge cages that i pit 5" of the bedding in and one bag lasts me for 1& 1/2 months. Times are a bit difficult now and we have to do what we can do to save money.
Question: What are some meat substitutes for an 8 month old baby? My baby has meat allergies and I don't wanna give her meat anyways. She has no teeth and I need meat substitutes that I can make into a puree. I don't think I can make a puree from tofu.
Please tell me anything I can give her with high protein. Lentils make her vomit.
My 8 month old is the size of a 5 month old. Her food must be purely pureed. Even the tiniest lump will make her choke and vomit.
Answer: I'm not sure you need to give an eight month old meat but heres a link that should help.
