Supplement Formulation
Question: Is it legal to produce a supplement based on research from a medical journal? Hi, I'm interested in producing a dietary supplement based on research published in a medical journal. The study in the journal listed the ingredients used in the research and I'm interested in producing a supplement containing those ingredients.
Here's what makes it interesting: the doctor that performed the study is already doing what I'm talking about... in fact, he created the supplement product first, and then did the study based on the ingredients in the supplement. As best I can tell, his supplement product is not patented.
My questions:
1. Can a supplement formula be patented? If this existing product is patented, does that protect its ingredients, preventing me from making the same formulation?
2. Related to #1, does that still apply even if the ingredients are listed in a medical journal article (which does not mention the supplement product by name at all, it just lists the ingredients)?
thanks----
T
Answer: Generally, supplements can not be patented, as they are considered naturally occuring substances. That's why there are so many different versions of each, and why every time there's a new one, imitators crop up immediately. So go for it, and good luck.
Question: I have Rheu Arthritis, want to supplement diet with amino acids. If this is advisable, please recommend some.? Please give me examples of brands of amino acid formulations that are easy to digest if this is a good idea for someone with this condition. Thanks in adavnce.
Answer: Amino Acids don't help very much with joints at all. They are the make-up of proteins, so they can give the basic materials for your body to work on making new cartilage, but it won't add anything to what you already have in your body or what you eat in your diet (unless you don't eat any protein).
If you want direct help for your joints, there are several natural supplements that help joint health, which may remove the cause of the pain. The most popular are Microlactin, Tart Cherries, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, Litozin (Danish Rose Hips), and Bromelain.
The only thing to really watch out for is allergies. Glucosamine is typically from Shellfish and Microlactin is from milk. As long as you're not allergic to those, you should have no problem. Good luck!
Question: What are the regulations associated with selling of non-FDA approved herbs incorporated into a food product? I have developed an herbal formulation that I would like to incorporate into some kind of nutritional supplement or food product. I believe that the herbs are not FDA approved although they are sold as "not for human consumption". Is there any legal way to incorporate these herbs into a product?
Answer: Basically the manufacturing plant making your product would be subject to the same regulations as general foods. However how you market the product could not have any claim to have any medical or health benefit with minor exceptions that lawyers would have to write.
There are nutritional manufacturers that you can find online that will make a new product for you according to what you want in it as long as it has no banned substances. Now these are general answers from my memory. More specific detail is needed for a complete answer.
Question: Want to start a supplement line, how it works or where to look? I would like to start a supplement line. I do not want to private label existing products, but rather a new formulation that I will be able to file a material composition patent on. I will want to outsource everything and would like advise on where to get started or....... well anything would be helpful as I am starting from strach, but espically manufactuers and start-up costs etc. and where to look and resoures I can use to learn from. Thanks everyone for any help you can offer, I will be greatfull.
Answer: Unless you have a HUGE pile of money, you're better off acquiring existing products and putting off creating/marketing your own formulations until your business is firmly established. Building your marketing plan and distribution scheme is paramount at this point. You can add 'esoteric' later in the process...
Good Luck!
Question: Starting a Supplement / Vitiman Company? I would like to start a supplement line. It is not as expensive as you think. I do not want to private label existing products, but rather a new formulation that I will be able to file a material composition patent on. I will want to outsource everything and would like advise on where to get started or....... well anything would be helpful as I am starting from strach, but especially manufacturers (who WILL outsource your line) and start-up costs etc. and where to look and resources I can use to learn from, sample org charts etc.. Thanks everyone for any help you can offer, I will be great full.
Answer: It may not be as expensive as you think, but it IS hard to get product placement into stores. My buddy who is an incredible nutritionist and his supplement line is bar-none the best product out there, by far, has a difficult task of getting big name stores such as Whole Foods or Jewel, Walgreens...etc... to allow his product on the shelf. Mainly because other big products have a "Minimal Compete or No Compete clause" in their contract. This means only a certain number of different companies are allowed to distribute in the store (nationwide).
Good luck with your venture and get to know the big wig people in Coporate offices before starting, otherwise you are going to be sitting on some major product with no distribution.

Answer: With any kind if supplement, I would start with attention to detail. Like running spell check.
Question: How many milligrams of vitamin B5 do you take for acne? I've heard of people with acne having success taking vitamin B5 supplements. I know that some dermatologists prescribe different vitamin B formulations. How many milligrams of vitamin B5 do you take?
Answer: You need extremely high dosages of B5 in order for the plan to be effective, with
between 10 and 20 grams a day (note, that is grams, not milligrams)
being the most widely recommended dose.
There are many reports
that, if taken in these high doses, it may cause more harm than good.
excessively large doses of B5 can lead to chronic fatigue, constant
headaches and a general inability for the body to heal itself in the
normal way.
The proponents of the theory counter-claim that, since B5 is a water
soluble vitamin, any unused excess will be secreted by the body, so
there is no risk involved. While this is true to a certain extent, the fact
is that the doses recommended by the supporters of the B5 theory are
just too high for this to happen in reality.
Your body simply does not have the capability of processing such
massive amounts of any vitamin that quickly, and so the B5 will
remain in your body long enough to cause the kind of problems that
seem to be most commonly associated with it.
Most importantly, it is important to understand that everything that
happens inside your body is about maintaining a healthy balance, and
that the more balanced your system is, the more healthy you are.
For example, your body needs both calcium and phosphorus to stay
healthy, but it needs them in balance with one another. Get the
balance wrong, and it is every bit as bad for you as not having them at
all.
If you try to take in excessively
high levels of any particular B vitamin, your body will react by
attempting to leech all the other B vitamins out of your body to
maintain the correct balance.
So, your body ‘sucks up’ vitamins B3 and B6 from wherever it can find
them, for example, and as these are key vitamins for controlling and
regulating the levels of energy in your body, hence you get the feeling
of being permanently tired.

Question: What is a literary unit? What does a "literary unit" mean? What did Muilenburg mean when he said, "the circumspect scholar will not fail to supplement his form-critical analysis with a careful inspection of the literary unit in its precise and unique formulation?"
Answer: The passage refers to keeping text in context, and unity within that context. Calling a manuscript, short story, novel or paragraph a literary unit calls attention to the fact that a literary "unit" makes it's own laws, voice, rhythm, etc. It becomes a unique entity subject to its own laws and the scholar should consider that.
Let's simplify:
The circumspect scholar will not fail to supplement his form-critical analysis with a careful inspection of the literary unit in its precise and unique formulation?
The careful scholar will not fail to supplement his form-critical analysis with a careful inspection of the literary unit in its precise and unique formulation?
The careful scholar will add to his form-critical analysis with a careful inspection of the literary unit in its precise and unique formulation?
The careful scholar will add to his analysis a careful inspection of the literary unit in its precise and unique formulation?
The careful scholar will add to his analysis observation of the literary unit in its precise and unique formulation?
The careful scholar will add to his analysis observation of what makes this text unique.
The careful scholar will consider the source.
It's a literary version of "he who lives by the sword...":
A successful text makes its own rules, follows its own rules (and considering the original paragraph refers to literary analysis), and lives or dies by them.

Answer: That is a pretty decent food. It's better than the majority of foods on the market (much better than Pedigree, Kibbles n Bits, Science Diet, Alpo, Purina, etc.). Not quite as good as foods like Merrick, Canidae, Innova, etc. But overall, an acceptable choice.
Question: Anyone use the oil additive product called, "ZDDP" in there motorcycle? This was developed and endorsed by "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, to supplement the deficiency of (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate) removed by manufacturers from oil to increase the life of "Catalytic Converters" which were clogging up prematurely. It is better explained on the (www.zddplus.com) web site. This additive is made for the "Non catalytic" types of engines that use (NON-ROLLER) type cam push rods. With these type of engines, and the current formulation of the oil, the cams can be subject to a diminished longevity.
Answer: Sounds like your trying to sell something that's BS. As an engineer I wouldn't go there
Question: Baby formula without rice or soy? My son is highly allergic to rice and we've been told to avoid it for at least the next year. I am having a hard time finding formula without rice or soy in it. Does anyone know of one without either?
He had an anaphylactic reaction that landed us in the ER the 4th time we tried rice cereal, and a reaction not so sever the second time we tried a different formulation of rice cereal without soy, thinking it was the soy he reacted to. He is breast fed now, but there are times I know he'd like a little more. He's 8 months old, just starting solids and nurses every two hours. Since my milk production hasn't been increasing with his feeding, i'd like to be able to supplement a bottle in the middle of the night so I can get more than an hour of sleep at a time. Thanks for your suggestions on formula.
Similac's formulas and nutramingen contain soy.
I know the main reason they say babies under 12 months can't have cows milk is because they are afraid mothers will exclusivly feed it to their babies, and that's not good. So I know a little is okay. I will ask his doctor about full-fat cow's milk next visit. He has yogurt and cheese okay right now. I have pumped after feedings in the past without increase. I do still try pumping to increase.
Answer: nutramingen. its pricy, but if its necessary you can get it from wic.
no do not give him cows milk yet w/o your drz approval. if this was just something you could do when ever, everybody would be doing it.
Question: Should not Homeopathic formulations need to meet the same criteria as over over-the-counter drugs/supplements? such as quality control and PROOF OF EFFICACY?
Did you know homeopathic law allow their voodoo water with only placebo effect to make health claims without any proof whatsoever?
You could take some tap water and call it a "cold remedy" and sell it tomorrow as a homeopathic formula. There's absolutely no stipulations placed upon fakery or formulation or false claims and it would sit on the shelf next to the products which had to verify their efficacy and safety and quality and analysis. Do you think the "grandfathered" laws from 150 years ago should be updated to modern science?
OTC products, IF they make a health claim, must prove efficacy. If they don't make any claim, as homeopathics can freely do (like HEAD-ON, AIRBORNE and all that crap) they don't have to prove anything but quantitative analysis and safety (as in being a GRAS substance or providing toxicity data).
Answer: You are absolutley correct. And people seling homeopathic remedies are essentially selling water. It's lunacy. People will believe anything it seems if it's sold to them with a good enough lie. Get rid of these charlotens and save your money for the poor where it will do some real good.
Question: Body builders! What do these three supplements do? Hardcore Formulations Epidrol
Met-Rx Hardcore Creatine
Liquid Protein Nitro-Peak
*Would it budge to take Creatine + Protein shakes on a regular workout basis?
-What would you suggest?
(These three are open to my nearby nutritionist shop)
Just help! is all needed
Answer: Creatine- Enables your muscles to hold water better, (optimizing their muscle building capabilities), Its not an steroid and will never be one. It is safe to take. I've been taking Creatine (SizeON) for the last 2 months and it has worked wonders for me. But it's not a miracle supplement. You still need to put in the hard work.
Protein.- Not sure about the Liquid Protein. But I would invest in Whey. I use optimum myself. (it works) and its relatively cheap. Whey is just a fast breaking down protein that is crucial to rebuilding your muscles. Whey is more important than creatine. So if you have to choose between one or the other. Choose Whey.
And Yes Take Both simultaneously, It will greater enhance your muscle building capabilities.
And If I could suggest something. Take Nitric Oxide. It is a huge energy boost. It will increase your BENCH by 10 lbs or more instantly.
The products I take are: SuperPump 250, SizeOn (Gaspari Nutrition), and Optimum Whey protein.
^ My products work for me. I would definitely recommend them to anyone. Good luck - Justin
Question: Do "B" vitamin supplements really help stress? I have a fiance who is very high stress and very anxious all the time. He does not even want to talk about taking mood stabilizers, so I thought maybe we could try a B vitamin to begin with.
I got a bottle of B vitamins called "Stress Formulation B". The naturopath says they help with stress, but I didn't get much else from her.
How do B vitamins help with stress? Do they really help at all? How exactly do they work, and what is the formulation (what mg of each B vitamin is necessary) to have any effect?
We just bought a house and I am 39 weeks pregnant, and I think he could use something to help him deal with the stress...
Any info you have on this would be helpful! Thanks!
What I mean is that my fiance is always a stressed out person. He's a total "worrier" and while I don't think he needs meds froma doctor, I am looking for a natural way to help him be not so stressed out... and I have heard Vit B supplements help people deal better with stress... any other tips on how to naturally he;p him relax would be great!
Answer: I would say that vitamin B does indeed play a small role in relieving some stress. In addition to taking vitamin B your fiance might also want to look into some herbal supplements. Some of the herbs that are known to relieve levels of stress include: St. Johns wart, Valerian, Kava Kava..etc. I have had luck with Valerian. It can be taken in a capsule form and can be found at any natural food store.
