Question: what jobs are there for someone majoring in both information technology and health & human wellness? My husband is majoring in interdisciplinary studies specializing in information technology and health & wellness and has a certificate in computer networking...what kinds of jobs are out there for computer people who also want to work in health & medical field (particularly networking)? Also, how much more beneficial is it for him to go for his masters in Information Technology?
Answer: Wow, your husband is set up for a great career! The two fast-growing fields for the next 10 years are the medical and computer fields (in spite of out-sourcing) and networking and working with databases are the hottest of the computer jobs.
Any organization dealing with medical services would love to hire someone who understood their specific field, instead of hiring someone who only understands computers or business in general, like typical graduates and people in the computer field (like me!).
1) Medical and health services managers need to have business and medical backgrounds: A bachelor’s degree is adequate for some entry-level positions in smaller facilities, at the departmental level within health care organizations, and in health information management. Graduates with bachelor’s degrees in health administration usually begin as administrative assistants or assistant department heads in larger hospitals. They also may begin as department heads or assistant administrators in small hospitals or nursing care facilities. Median annual earnings of medical and health services managers were $67,430 in May 2004. Here's the US Dept of Labor's info about the career:
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos014.htm
2) The computer field isn't too keen on advanced degrees unless you want to teach at a college or want to go into high management.
He could be a computer network analyst, later a networking manager, or a computer systems analyst. Here's a link to the US Dept of Labor's list of these computer professions ( once you click on a title, you'll see the job description, requirements and outlook):

Very respectable program. The University of Pittsburgh also has a Masters HIM program but it is on-campus. These are the only two accredited programs in the world! They also have certificate programs but in order to become a registered HIM professional you have to go to an accredited program and complete it in full. Visit www.ahima.com they have a link to education there. For more info on HIM visit www.himss.com .

Question: In what positive ways has technology impacted health? Please explain why they impact health when you list them.
Thank You In Advance For Your Help!!!!!!!!!
Answer: Technology affects health all the time. For example, technology such as MRI's and CAT scans can detect tumors or abnormalities in the body.
Many surgeries nowadays are done laparoscopically, in which a small camera is inserted into a small hole in the body portraying large images on a TV-like screen. Another small incision is made in which small instruments are inserted to perform the surgery. This allows more minimally invasive procedures to be done with less scarring and less healing time for the patient.
Question: Will I be able to pursue a career in Health Information Technology if I have Hepatitis B and have 3 misdemeano I am currently enrolled at the community college and wanted to know if I would be able to work in Health Information Technology if I had hepatitis B and 3 misdemeanor for issuance of bad check. The misdemeanors was from 2001. I have no other criminal record and it was 6 years ago! Will I be denied of the position. I always disclosed my record to my employers and noone realy seems to mind but I know that working in a hospital can be alittle more difficult. If I will have to work harder at it then its no problem but I just don't want to take all my courses and be denied of my certification.
Answer: I work in Health IT and although it may not hurt you, it may be a big problem. The reason is within HIT, you have access to a lot of patient and doctor information. You could have access to billing and payroll information for those medical personnel. All this is outside of the medical offices. Within the medical offices, Hep B may be an issue as I doubt they want to take chances spreading it.
Again, it is not a total loss, especially if you can prove to them that you're so good, they have to let you in even if they have their issues.

Question: Does having a associates degree in Health Information Technology worth it? I was wanting to know should I get my associates in Health Information Technology or my bachelor's in Health Information Administration and what are the entry level yearly salaries for both of them.
Answer: I would think that the bachelor's degree would open up a lot more doors though it would require a much greater amount of time and money.
For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical and health services managers', 'medical records and health information technicians' or such.
Please only consider programs that are accredited within the industry.

With schooling, please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (may have 'bricks and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such as penn foster, capella, sanford brown, university of phoenix, everest, ashworth, kaplan, walden and others as they are merely out to make a profit (and course credits may not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com

Question: If i get a associate degree in health information technology, what type of college should i go to,to continue? If i get an associate degree in health information technology, what type of college should i go to,to continue my education for a bachelors degree in this career
Answer: This website explains what Health Information Technology is http://www.hhs.gov/healthit/
If you wanted to get a bachelors degree you would look for a university that has a health education and promotion degree. That way you have the technology background and also the ability to act as a liason between the doctors and the patients.
Question: What is a National Coordinator of Health Information Technology? (pages 461-463 of the stimulus plan)
Will I still have the freedom to keep my personal medical history private?
Will it be mandatory for the government to access my medical records whenever they want? I don't understand.
Will I be able to "opt out" if I want to?
Will citizens still have the freedom to choose whether to give this information out?
Answer: It is NOT just "Dems want to bring medical record management into the 21st century (out of the 18th century, of paper only)."
Nor will we find that it "massively improves efficiency and save(s) piles of money."
According to Betsy McCaughy, at Bloomberg.com:
One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions (442, 446).
Guiding my doctor's decisions about my care is not efficient. It's an invasive procedure by bureaucrats.
Furthermore,
Hospitals and doctors that are not “meaningful users” of the new system will face penalties. “Meaningful user” isn’t defined in the bill. That will be left to the HHS secretary, who will be empowered to impose “more stringent measures of meaningful use over time” (511, 518, 540-541)
This will give massive power to this administration and future ones, to decide who gets what medical care. Washington has never been good at this. Giving these bureaucrats more and more undefined power is irresponsible, verging on suicidal.
Far from being lied to by the "stimulus" opponents, we are being lied to by the people we elected who say that doing anything, even oppressive and wasteful, is preferable to doing something less, or less hastily, that may actually help.
(Page numbers are from the bill, H.R.1EH.)
Question: Is ITT Tech a good school to graduate from for a health information technology degree? Please describe what type of job you can get out of this? Is it in high demand? Is the pay good?
Answer: ITT tech is not regionally accredited. I wouldn't attend there. Your credits will not transfer to a state college/university if your future plans change. Best of luck to you though!
Question: Health information technology and Health information management ? Health information technology and Health information management ?
I have read a lot of question about two careers, however, I am still confused. Would you guys help me please?
For ex:
-My college offers an AA degreen in health information technology, if I have AA degree in this HIT, can I go to BS degree in this HIT ? and where can I find schools (I prefer Calstate in California)?
-If I go to BS degree in Health information technology, will it be called Heal information management? I think Health information management is higher than Health information technology, but I am not sure. I dont know they are both the same career or not ?
AA degree in HIT is called Health information technology. On the other hand, BS degree in HIT is called Health information management? am I right ?
Thank you very much!
Answer: You are correct.
Health Information Technology pretty much encompasses everything that deals with the individual job duties that the HIT/HIM department must deal with.
Health Information Management is a higher level of managing Health Information Technology.
With an AA you can obtain the credential - Registered Health Information Technician.
With a BS you can obtain the credential - Registered Health Information Administrator
You can easily transition from AA to BS depending on the college you go to. Just make sure that they are accredited by AHIMA. For more information go to www.ahima.org
Question: What exactly does one do with an associates degree in Health Information Technology? Does this have anything to do with medical transcription. I know you can get a certificate after twelve months for medical transcription.
What's the salary like for these to options?
Answer: Depends - If you go to a school that is accredited by AHIMA (www.ahima.org), then you can do almost anything related to HIT.
That means you can take your national exam, the RHIT exam.
With the RHIT, you could be a transcriptionist, coder, biller, or director of medical records. You could work almost anywhere - hospitals, insurance companies, lawyer offices, doctor's offices, etc.
The salary really depends on what you do and where you live...
