Treatments
Question: Treatments? Does anyone know of treatments for TMJ? What does TMJ stand for anyway?
Answer: "TMJ" stands for TemporoMandibular Joint, or the jaw joint. You have two TMJs, one in front of each ear, connecting the lower jaw bone (the mandible) to the skull. The joints allow movement up and down, side to side, and forward and back—all the mobility necessary for biting, chewing and swallowing food, for speaking and for making facial expressions.
Temporomandibular joint diseases and disorders, commonly called "TMJ", refer to a complex and poorly understood set of conditions that can cause pain in the area of the jaw joint and associated muscles and/or problems using the jaw. Both or just one of the temporomandibular joints may be affected. TMJ diseases and disorders can affect a person’s ability to speak, eat, chew, swallow, and even breathe.
A study conducted by The Lewin Group prepared for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality concluded that many TMJ patients have other health problems. These may include Fibromyalgia, sleep disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, chemical sensitivity, Mitral Valve Prolapse, and Hypermobile Joints. The relationship between these conditions and TMJ diseases and disorders needs further research. Moreover, certain medical conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Dystonia, Lyme Disease and Scleroderma also may have an effect on the TMJ.
TREATMENT
Simple, gentle therapies are usually recommended first. If those don't work, mouth guards and more aggressive treatments may be considered. Surgery is generally considered a last resort. Fortunately, there are many steps you can take at home long before that point.
Try massaging the various muscles that may be involved. Probe all of the muscles of the face, shoulders, and back of the neck. (Avoid the area around the throat.) Press on the muscles to identify extremely painful points. Massage the painful spot with hard, slow, short strokes. Do this several times a day until the muscle is no longer painful when pressed.
To massage the masseter muscles on each side of your jaw, place your thumb inside your mouth and squeeze the thick muscle in your cheek (toward the back of your mouth) with your fingers. To get at the harder-to-reach jaw muscles inside your mouth, use your index finger to probe for tender areas behind the teeth, and use the finger to massage these spots.
Here are some other steps to consider:
Maintain good posture while working at a computer, watching TV, and reading. Take frequent breaks to relieve stressed muscles.
Make a habit of relaxing your facial and jaw muscles throughout the day.
Avoid eating hard foods, like nuts, candies, and steak.
Drink plenty of water every day and get plenty of sleep.
Learn relaxation techniques to reduce overall stress and muscle tension in your back, neck, and body.
Other home-care therapies are useful for some people, such as moist heat or cold packs on the face, vitamin supplements, or biofeedback. Exercising several times each week may help you relax, strengthen your body, increase flexibility, and increase your pain threshold.
Read as much as you can, as opinion varies widely on the management of TMJ disorders. Get several clinical perspectives. The good news is that most people eventually find something that helps.
MOUTH GUARDS
Mouth guards, also called splints or appliances, have been used since the 1930's to treat teeth grinding, clenching, and TMJ disorders. Many people have found them to be useful, but the benefits vary widely. The guard may lose its effectiveness over time, or when you stop wearing it. Other people may feel worse pain when they wear one.
There are different types of splints. Some fit over the top of the teeth, some on the bottom. They may be designed to keep your jaw in a more relaxed position, inhibit clenching, or provide some other function. If one type doesn't work, another may.
For example, a new type of splint is called the NTI-tss. It fits over just a couple of top, front teeth. The idea is to keep all of your back teeth completely separated, under the theory that most clenching is done by these back teeth. With the NTI splint, the only contact is between the tiny splint and one bottom front tooth.
MORE AGGRESSIVE TREATMENT
Be cautious about any non-reversible treatment method that permanently alters your bite. However, if a mouth guard doesn't work, your dentist may recommend orthodontics to help re-align your teeth.
Reconstructive surgery of the jaw is rarely required. In fact, studies have shown that the results are often worse than before surgery.
Muscle relaxant medications may help. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) help reduce inflammation in the jaw stemming from arthritis or other causes of inflammation.
Question: What salon treatments would you choose for a foto session? I am a guy and I am planning a foto session an a make-over (dressed as a girl). I was thinking go to a beauty salon and book a package of beauty treatments. Which treatments do you think I should ask to be included in the package?
I want to look convincing!
Answer: That depends... if you are going the day of. stick to a manicure and pedicure and getting your make-up done.
Everything else I could suggest you would need to do at least two days in advance, before your body responds the the treatments the way you'd like. If you are going two days ahead you should get
-mani/pedi
-various waxing (eyebrows definitely) and whatever else you are comfortable with.
-Facial
-Spray tan
-And then maybe go back to get a fresh shave, your make-up and hair done.
Its important to not do any of these the day of... because if you have an allergic reaction, swelling, or uneven color. You are screwed.
Are you wearing a wig, or using your natural hair?
And if you don't mind me asking.. what is this for?!
Question: What spa treatments should I avoid when pregnant? I am going to Droitwich Spa Brine Bath in a weeks time and was planning to have some pampering treatments while there. I am 13 weeks pregnant and have been told that some aromatherapy/massage treatments should be avoided during pregnancy. Does anyone have any advice.....I was planning on a full body massage and using the pool which is salt water.
Answer: It all depends on what spa you go to I guess- however I went on my honeymoon at 8 1/2 weeks pregnant in February. We had a spa certificate and the ONLY thing they would allow me to do was get a facial. They did have a pregnancy massage however you had to be in the second trimester for them to do it- so I was unable to do that. They wouldn't do the body wraps, any massages, etc. Again I'm sure it all depends on the place you're going- I'd discuss it quick with your doctor as well. Have fun!
Question: How many treatments did it take for your puppy to get rid of hookworm and tapeworm? We just adopted a 10-week old puppy. She's received two treatments for both worms (pyrantel pamoate for hook and praziquantel for tape). The shelter said it could take up to four treatments for her to be in the clear. Based on your experience, how long does it take?
She's going to the vet Monday afternoon. I'm too impatient to wait until then for an idea on how this will play out. ;-)
Answer: It can take a while to clear up both. You need to clean up right after the puppy goes to the bathroom so that he doesn't keep reinfecting himself. After the treatments are done, bring a stool sample to the vets office so they can test it to see how the treatments are working. My vet requires two stool samples in a row to show as negative in order to say that they are parasite free. He also tests the stool twice a year to make sure the animal is parasite free.
The puppy can also be started on Interceptor heartworm preventative now, even though he won't have his first heartworm check until he's 9 months old. Interceptor has medication in it to help keep intestional parasite in check.
Good Luck
Question: What are some treatments that work for blocked fallopian tubes? I want to have a baby but one of my fallopian tubes has been removed and the other is blocked. Are there any treatments that assist with this? Has anyone gotten pregnant after receiving treatment for blocked fallopian tubes?
Answer: If there is a small blockage a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) could help flush out some of the debri but if there is a true blockage then surgery is most likely needed. Sometimes women can get this taken care of via laprascopy and sometimes more invasive surgery is needed. As mentioned before, you could bypass the tube completely and go for IVF if that is something that is affordable to you and that you'd be okay with doing.
Question: What treatments or help can you suggest for constant ringing in the ear? We have ruled out tumor, wax impaction, and family tendency. Do you have any helpful treatments or words of advice?
Yes, my blood pressure is in the low-normal range.
Answer: wish,i had a great answer for you i have had it for more than 25 yrs.,i've just learned to ignore it.watch out for depression associated with it.
best of luck...
Question: What treatments work best for an overactive thyroid - hyperthyroidism? My son is 12 and dealing with an overactive thyroid with severe weight loss. He may also be showing small signs of Graves Disease with leg rash/itching. I am meeting with the doctor next week, but I wanted to have some info on treatments before we go. (serious answers only, please!)
What about Beta Blockers?
What kinds of food should he eat?
Answer: If he does have it, it would be strange. It usually affects people much older than him. But it's good that you're catching it now, if he does have it. They have different treatments available. I had Grave's in the early 80's and opted to have the gland removed. Now I suffer from hypothyroidism. Which I think is worse in many ways. Regardless of the treatment, you'll have to make sure he is monitored for the hypo after wards. Former President Bush & Barbara Bush had Grave's and they both had the radiation treatment. Both seem to be fine. I wish you luck....
PS Yeah.... one person mentioned Prozac.... And depression is a big part of having hypothyroidism. Make sure he is well disciplned and has a strong work ethic... those two things will help him down the road.
Question: Any home treatments for mild acne scarring that actually work? I ven never broken out before, but after using a new skin product broke out severely on my cheeks. I now am left with the dicsolored scars of the pimples. Luckily I dont have the pits in my skin, but really just the reddish marks left. I could deal with it if it was a couple, but I have like 10 of them. Any at home treatments that have worked for you in fading them?
Answer: What you have is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is not scarring and that's great news! So even if you do nothing about the red marks, they will eventually heal up on their own (about 6 months usually). I would actually suggest a lotion with 10% AHA. AHA is awesome for exfoliation, and the faster those skin cells shed, the faster those red marks fade!
If you are really bent on using at home remedies, try apple cider vinegar or lemon slices. Orange slices aren't strong enough and don't have the lightening affect that lemon slices do. So for apple cider vinegar, apply to a cotton ball and then to your hyperpigmentated area. For lemon slices, cut a thin slice from a whole lemon and rub over the red marks.
Good luck, and remember those marks will fade no matter what you do! :}
Question: What kinds of window treatments can you hang when you have wood blinds? I am trying to decorate my living room, specifically I am looking to add window treatments. I have wood blinds (medium oak color) and wood trim (same color). Everything else in the room is really neautral - all khaki. I am wondering what kinds of things I can do for window treatments. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Answer: Sounds like we have the same blinds. The wood is so beautiful you really shouldn't cover it up. We put up simple valances in a neutral color ( close to khaki ) so when the blinds were open they were hidden and we had an open view. When they are closed you get the full effect of the wood. It would be a shame to hide it. It took us a few days to get used to just valances, but it works. Also it is cleaner. Less dust and less curtain cleaning.
Question: How many treatments of Cyrotherapy are necessary for genital warts? I have now had 6 treatments of cyrotherapy for genital warts and the nurse says it's getting better but I'm losing hope. Is this normal? It has been a month and a half.
Answer: o ou! it is tooo many! it look like cyrotherapy is not working for you....
anyway if you have genital warts - you MUST get rid of them as soon as it is possible because genital warts are very contagious!!
and if you really want to get rid of genital warts forever then you should know that you can remove genital warts by surgery, freezing, laser, acid or cream but genital warts can reappear again and again because genital warts appears when your immune system is weak!
HPV is the virus that causes genital warts. People can be infected with HPV and never show any symptoms. Others will develop genital warts. These warts can stay the same size, grow, or go away on their own. It largely depends on the infected person's immune system. A healthy immune system means your body may be able to suppress the virus and not show symptoms.
Even after the warts go away, the person will always remain infected with HPV. That person can spread the virus even without showing symptoms.
Also, if you do have HPV, it is important to have an annual pap smear because your risk of developing cervical, anal, penile cancer is higher - because you can have more than on strain of HPV virus - the one that can cause only genital warts and the other that causes only cervical cancer - but it do not cause genital warts!
so you must build up your immune system because your body can get rid of genital warts by itself if your immune system will be strong! so eat more healthy food, more vitamins and more sport activities! (No smoking, no beer/ale, no booze, no drugs, no junk food, no fast food garbage, no sugary sweet soda's. Get on a good, balanced, healthy diet including plenty of boiled or steamed vegetables.
Drink P L E N T Y O F W A T E R , fruit juices & fat free milk. Snack on lots of RAW fruit & veggies. Get up one hour early every morning & take a BRISK 30 minute walk - then - do the same thing again in the evening after dinner. Make sure you eat a good, balanced breakfast daily. You get your energy for the day from your breakfast meal. Get 8 hours sleep each night. Flip your mattress over so it will level out to give you a good night's rest. Slack off too much coffee & tea)
also you must use herbal treatment because you can not always live 100% healthy...!!!
in that case Wartrol is really good (probably the best) product that gets rid of genital warts comparatively fast and makes you feel more confident knowing that they wont reappear again! It works by stimulating your immune system to fight the HPV virus that causes the warts + it helps to prevent cervical, penile, anal and etc cancer because HPV virus in 70% cases can cause cancer!!!
and of course it is better if you use full course (5 months - if I remember correctly).
( Wartrol is 100% safe because it contains 5 main ingredients which are safe - Black Sulphide of Antimony, Wild Yellow Indigo, Potassium Hydrate, Arbor Vitae (Tree of Life) and Nitricum Acidum (Nitric Acid) and those ingredients have no side effects!
Question: How long should you wait between treatments for lyme disease and heartworm? We're thinking of adopting this beautiful foxhound from a nearby shelter but she has tested postive of lyme disease and heart worm. She has begun the lyme treatment as of May 29th 2007 and will continue that treatment for about three or so more weeks. The heartworm treatment is only two days but both treatments can not be done at once. She is a strong dog and will most likely do just fine but does anyone happen to know how long she will have to wait to have the heartworm treatment done after she finishes the lyme treatment?
Answer: Hmm. Who told you they can't be done at once? I'm not sure that's true, but I may have found another reason for the delay.
Lyme disease is usually treated with the antibiotic doxycyline. Heartworms are treated with an injection, but there has been evidence that running a course of doxycyline prior to the injection MAY help kill more worms.
If that's not the issue, then maybe the Lyme disease is so advanced that they are worried the shock to her system would be too great. Her body is busy killing and processing the Lyme bacteria now, and although Heartworm treatment only takes two days at the vet, it takes at least a month for the dog to fully recover, and they must be kept calm, with no exercise during that period, otherwise the dead and dying worms can clog their blood vessels and kill them.
She can probably have the Heartworm treatment the day after she takes her last antibiotic. You should probably ask your vet to be sure.
Question: Are there any non surgical treatments i can perform on my face to reduce cheek and jaw line fat? My jaw line is very chubby, and i hate to smile in pictures. I live in Oregon,so if there are any treatments i could use, or any non surgical treatments here in the Portland area that are available, can you let me know? I'm desperate for confidence.
Answer: This treatment really works and you get very quick results. Self massage face and jaw line with natural oils. I found coconut and olive oil are excellent.and both are suitable for oily and dry skins. For best results you have to massage quite strongly and quite vigorously and it should be done over and over with a forward and back motion not a circular one as that will not be effective. You may be hesitant about that but if you research my Best Answers you will see many who only have benefited by treatment. You start less vigorously as skin has to adjust and stop if there is soreness and resume when you can. Depending on how vigorous/how strong you have made it you will see noticeable improvements in a 4 to 5 days and in two weeks you will see very noticeable results and overtime even better ones. You will be amazed at it´s effectiveness. Treatment will also give you a`smooth skin and a vibrantly healthy glow. Try it - you will be happy that you did.
Supplementary exercises that help: Yoga exercises for face (and neck.) You can get books with pictures (Find with a web search). The "Lion pose" and variations of that are really effective and easy to do. Also doing many head turns(as far as you can go) will help.

Question: What treatments do you recommand for parvovirus? We have a 8 months old Lab. puppy who doesn't eat for 2 days. She is not active. We took her to the Vet. yesterday to have blood test and 3 shots (antibiotic) because the vet. suppected that she has parvovirus. Her bottom has blood. This morning she vomitted a little and pooped out blood. The vet said that there are two treatments. Treatment #1 it's 50/50 percent change live. Treatment #2 is IV and it's 80% live, 20% die and it costs around $900. What should I do? Right she doesn't eat and drink a little bit only. I hope I can get hear from those who had gone through this. I am waiting for the test result. Thank you.
Answer: Test takes ten minutes. Its a simple snap test done with feces. Test even comes with the q-tip to stick to get a sample.
Main thing keep her loaded with fluid. I take a syringe (without the needle) and fill it with water (pedialyte is better) Open snout and empty syringe in the back of the throat and close snout tight. They have to keep fluids in them. The death from Parvo virus is dehydration. The virus has to run its course and it will but you have to keep fluids in the pet thats why the iv is a much better survival rate. Antibiotics are usually given to keep from any other bacterial infection attacking the dog while his immune system is fighting the virus.
Talk to your vet on your pups size for pepto. I have a lot of luck with pepto or they can perscribe you something like Metro to help with the diahrea and vomiting. Most die before they get to the vet.
Added:
I have rescued several parvo survivors. I kept my first.
Question: What are some treatments when breastfeeding is not possible? After a traumatic surgery as a teenager I am not able to breastfeed. My daughter is now 4 days old and this morning I woke up with horribly painful breasts. Since delivery I've been wearing a sports bra 24/7 and this morning I started putting cabbage leaves to relieve the pain. For how long should I keep the leaves? I keep changing them every so often but how many days?
Also, I'd really appreciate any other home remedies or treatments.
Thank you
Answer: I did the cabbage leaves for about 5 days, I started when my son was 4 days old as well. After about 2 days of using the cabbage leaves the pain was pretty much gone. Take advil and tylenol to relieve the pain as well....best of luck to you!!!
