Vitamin Pills
Question: VITAMIN Pills??????? Ok, So I bought these vitamin pills (Centrum Multi-Vitamin). I am a college student who is living on campus, and I just absolutely hate the food options. So I keep eating the same thing everyday...Because of this I am not getting the right vitamins, and I am noticing changes in my body...For example, I have noticed that my nails are changing color..(they are getting brown streaks in them....it's quite unattractive)...what I want to know is
1. If there is some sort of trick to taking pills. I've tried putting the pill in my mouth and taking a big gulp of water. Haven't had any luck with that...usually when I have to take pills I crush the pill and mix it in my juice...But these pills taste and smell really bad
2. Do any of you guys take vitamins?
3. If you do, which one and does it work?
4. Is there a difference between chewable vitamins and non- chewable..as in, does one work faster that the other (refering to the time that it takes to actually see a difference)
Thank You...
Answer: Often those multi vitamins are rather large and hard to even break in half....I take on every day as part of my diet routine. You could crush it with a spoon or cut it in half, but use a butter knife in case you slip...it won't take your finger off..they are a good source if your not getting what you need from your food source. I have a good diet but it's strict, I take one anyway....Chewables are just as good and may be better for you if you have a problem with the others....Can't you cook in your room? Or cook at the frat house and keep it in your room.....I cook a weeks worth of food in one night....
Question: vitamin pills? Does anyone know of a vitamin pill that is small, no iron and doesn't have that vitamin smell?
Answer: Hey Karen C,
I drink this stuff everyday, I suggest getting a box of Emergen-C. It is filled with vitamins and the best part is that it is in flavored powdered form so you just mix it in with water. The smell is what ever flavor you get, like orange, cranberry, etc., and I believe it has no iron in it. So you will be drinking no pills at all, just a very delicious, fruit flavored, vitamin drink.
Hope this helps!
Question: Vitamin and mineral pills don't work? How in the world do we get our daily nutrition then? I've now been reading and hearing that vitamin pills may do more harm than good (don't know reason why) and that they do not work, so how in the world can you get your daily value of vitamins and minerals?
Answer: Hi,
I am always impressed that there is oftentimes some good advice and good links from people helping others through Yahoo_Answers.
Firstly, your concerns about supplements are valid. If you look at the label on a Geritol bottle of iron, it will say it is poisonous. Also, you can eat iron from liver that would be many many times the amount of what would kill from Geritol and it would not hurt you one bit. The difference is the type of synthesized iron. Synthetic B12 supplements have the same problem. Also, Vitamin A Beta Carotene supplements have killed people as well. I poisoned my own liver with the metallic copper in nutritional yeast, that was copper rust from the copper pots it is grown in. So I have 'learned' to swear off supplements.
See <> http://dietarysupplements.nlm.nih.gov/dietary/detail.jsp?contain=07002007&name=Geritol+Tonic+With+Ferrex+18&pageD=brand <> and <> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geritol <>.
Secondly, after reading your question I saw you might be interested in optimizing your nutrition [(-:] so even though I may not answer your question exactly as you may have wanted it answered, I thought I would take the time to pass on some pointers I have learned the hard way from my own bad 'uninformed' choices, so you could learn about good advice and bad advice about good nutritional choices.
After having many bad health problems from listening to people who knew very little about the consequences of choosing LOW nutritional statistics, I really-really encourage you to learn from good nutritionists what to eat for a life time. [See below]
My best to you and to your future health,
A1

I have learned what I now know after my own lengthy research efforts to improve my health - after ‘FINALLY’ listening to unbiased researching nutritionists. I have shared extensively concerning the most critical nutritional statistics that are common to us all at: <> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091005174358AAgZawf

Also, the only ranking I have ever found to be helpful for me for various foods was from Dr. Fuhrman’s work. I modified his list and posted it at <> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091016160457AAkysKW

Lastly, after all my previous health problems due to following a-lot of bad advice, I can now understand the frustrations of other health researchers in the following quote within “The China Study” by T Colin Campbell pg 1: >>==>
“Even though information and opinions are plentiful, very few people truly know what they should be doing to improve their health.”
“This isn’t because the research hasn’t been done. It has. But the real science has been buried beneath a clutter of irrelevant or even harmful information – junk science, fad diets and food industry propaganda.”

Question: What mg Biotin vitamin pills should I get to grow my hair? I am considering taking the Biotin vitamin pills just to consume for healthy proteins and such. I've heard having more protein helps your hair and nails grow. But anyways, I want my hair to grow super fast but what mg will help me persue that without hurting me or making me get sick or whatever? THANKS.
Answer: Start out with 1000mcg doses. Take that for about 2 weeks, then up the dosage to 2000mcg. Continue on in this way until you get to 5000mcg. That's the ideal. If you start out at 5000mcg you may experience acne breakouts and nausea. Working your way up slowly prevents both of these
IN RESPONSE TO THE OTHER ANSWER: Obviously 1000mg would be too much. That's why I used the unit m-c-g (microgram, not milligram) because that is the unit that all major biotin suppliers use. Obviously the other response does not understand the way vitamins are massed. And in fact, Biotin does help with hair growth by stimulating the follicles.
Question: How many vitamin pills could you take a day? For this fictional character of mine, and since I don't take vitamin pills, I need help.
I'm trying to find out how much is too much. Could he take five (less or more) different vitamin pills and be okay? Especially if he's been popping these pills for a long time...
Because he's weird and enjoys consuming a lot of pills.
Answer: Well, most people take one mutli-vitamin a day. It'd be more realistic if he took supplements along with the mutli vitamins, like extra vitamin c or b, or herbal supplements like acai or flaxseed, or something like calcium or a probiotic, or perhaps iron if he's anemic.
Question: Can I get vitamin A toxicity from vitamin pills? So, I've started taking centrums to get my daily vitamins, but lately I think I've been getting a little too much beta-carotene. My pretty yellow-orange fingers can attest to it. So, anyway, I know beta-carotene can be flushed out by the kidneys since it's water soluble, but 70% of the vitamin A in the pill is not beta-carotene, which means it's probably retinol or some other variety of fat-soluble Vitamin A. The bottle lists 90% daily value per pill. I'm wondering if I might be getting too much fat soluble vitamin A and if I could get Hypervitaminosis A from taking the pills. I'd rather not have to stop taking them, so if someone could tell me if it's safe or not that would be great.
Answer: The only way you could have a problem is if you do not follow the directions on the label. You should never take more than what the label states. I would suggest talking to a doctor about the yellow-orange fingers.
Question: Is it possible for vitamin pills to help gain muscle? I'm a weight lifter and have never took any regular vitamin pills. I'm talking about your regular over the counter vitamin pills that you can take everyday to help maintain energy, health, etc, etc. By taking vitamin pills, is it possible that they can help out with the building of muscle? And if so, which ones are they?
Answer: Hey, great question.
Multi-Vits are a general tablet that contains a certain % of daily intake of nutrients. For example vitamins A,B complex, C, D, E and K. It may also contain minerals like Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium etc.
These nutrients are essential for your cellular processes to function properly. Therefore, they do play a role in muscle regeneration after a long workout.
The problem is that these pills would do the same even if you didnt workout out. So for it being a muscle building supplement, I would say not to hold your breath on that. You will end up peeing out extras anyways.
For building muscle you want to make sure you have all the essential nutrients available to your muscle cells. So try a protein supplement - whey - and a multi-vit to maintain that available level. Also, read up on taking calcium with zinc or carbonated drinks. You will find that calcium is bound to the later and become unavailable to the body.
Hope that helps.

Question: Is it safe to cut or crush vitamin pills? I have a multi vitamin for Woman from Target and it is huge. I have a really hard time swallowing large pills. Can I crush it? Are there any kinds of pills or vitamins that are not safe when crushed?
LOL Hayden, I'm not a dog but thank you anyway.
Answer: Crushing them is perfectly fine.
Question: Can you not eat and just take vitamin pills to lose weight? Hi I want to lose weight by barely eating, but I'm scared of losing my hair or dying or sumthing because of vitamin deficiencies. If I take multivitamin pills can I lose weight while still giving my body its vitamins?
Answer: it doesnt happen because of vitamin deficiency - it happens because of nutrient deficiency - protein, helthy fats, carbs, dietary fiber etc.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Question: Does anyone know of any tasty or healthy alternative to prenatal vitamin pills? I am new to the whole pregnancy thing. Prenatal pills have a tendency make people sick, so I was looking for alternatives. I have found a few different options like eating the right diet, granola like bars, or even chews. I just don't think I will be comfortable taking those large prenatal vitamin pills. Just wondering if any mom's have tested and or used anything that they could recommend?
Answer: Have you looked at taking a prenatal vitamin bar like Belly bars or Bebe bars. I know for sure that Bebe bars have DHA and the amino acids you need. They have a good taste to them as well. I liked them.
Question: Is it ok to store vitamin pills in the fridge? I have Centrum multi-vitamin pills and Nature Made Super-B Complex (I also plan on buying Nature Made Calcium, and Vitamin C)
Is it ok to store these vitamins in a fridge? What are the potential side-effects/risks?
Thanks.
Answer: Usually it says of the bottle what temperature to store them. Usually between 68 and 77 degrees so the fridge would be considered to cold. It may change the effectiveness. I personally do not think it would do any harm but that is what drug manufacturers recommend.
Question: Stomach hurts for about 10 mins after taking vitamin pills? Okay I got some pills (VITAMIN D and some all in 1..) and everytime I take them my stomach hurts for about 10 mins then it goes away?? I also dont take them on a empty stomach anyone know why it might make my stomach queezy thanks!
Answer: Your body probably is sensitive to any pills coming in because pills have certain things in them to make your body work a certain way, so your stomach might naturally feel a bit queasy. =] No big deal, but if it really hurts, go to the hospital; not a doctor.
Question: If i take vitamin pills will the birth control pills that i'm taking now lose its effectiveness? I need to start taking vitamins since i took so many antibiotics this year, and i keep getting sick for anything which means my immune system is low. Anyway if i start taking vitamins will that affect the birth control in any way?? When i took the antibiotics it said the birth control will lose its effectiveness... how do i know what other pills does the same??/... thanks in advance for your answer.
Answer: Many antibiotics interfere with the effectiveness of birth control. Some other medications can as well, but vitamins usually don't. You should talk to your pharmacist or doctor about what they recommend for you and they can help you pick one that won't interact with your birth control.
Question: What do you think of these vitamin pills? What is your opinion of One A Day vitamin pills ( One A Day Teen Advantage for Him)? Worth buying?
Specific vitamin pills: http://oneaday.com/teen_advantage.html
What do you mean by basic? Is that a advantage or disadvantage?
Answer: The vitamins you are looking at are very basic and will make sure you are not missing nutrients in your diet. A good price is around $10 for a bottle.
