Water
Question: Water.....? Every time i try to drink water it makes me feel sick. I would like to start drinking water as i have never in my life drank it. I have tried bottled water and tap water but it all makes me feel sick do you have any suggestions?
Answer: I used to have the same problem with alcohol but I persisted.
Just stick with it, eventually you will manage.
Question: WATER???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? Okay, does drinking water right before sleep make your face bloat in the morning? Like people are telling me different things...Should I drink water only 3 hours prior to I sleep or should I drink 3 cups right before I sleep? WHICH IS IT? Please help thank you very much.
Answer: never in my life have i heard that, i drink water up to the point of before falling asleep also during the nite if i wake up thirsty...never had that problem.
Question: what temperature water should you run to keep pipes from bursting? I have an older home, and were we are its extremely cold. I have water running in the kitchen sink, tub and bathroom sink, I always thought you would just run cold water? Then i heard some guy say hot water? does it matter? Also the kitchen, bathroom are on the south side of the house, so i didnt know if i need water running at all faucets, i have small water running, I also have the cupboards open where the pipe runs to the kitchen to help air flow? my main concern was does the temperature of the water matter? i noticed i have no hot water in the bathroom sink, but i have cold water, i have hot water in the tub, so not sure whats going on there?
i forgot to say, i have no basement
Answer: First off the thought was that running water does not freeze as easily as still water. Water will still freeze if it is cold enough-even in the creeks.
Secondly, why they are saying hot water is that in plumbing, the hot and cold pipe could be(not always) are running close together and hot water(which comes heated from the tank) will impart the heat in the same cavity as the cold water(if that pipe is there). That is the thought. It does drain your tank which has to keep reheating more and more water.
The difference between the bathroom sink and the tub would be in the plumbing(or that the hot water to the sink has frozen.
What to do. Having the cupboard open to room temp is the right thing to do. Check in the basement (how cold it is) and for exposed pipes. Those pipes will be that cold.
Pay attention. If the pipes are on the outer walls of the house - where the insulation is suppose to be THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. It has its butt in the frost 24/7(just like a refridgerator).
Modern homes (the 50's on at least) have the plumbing on the inside walls or no closer that6" to the inside of the outer(insulated) wall. And the water tank is in the middle of the home.
You have to expose the pipes from the inside walls and get the room air to contact them. Also you need glass or syrofoam insulation behind them. Hope none have already broken(which means you would have to tear the wall apart anyways). Do a retrofit in the spring.
Now I know you are asking, why was it built this way? Maybe cause initially they had a well? And pipes were added later for running water.
Question: What to do with water heater and water softner when draining water from plumbing? Hello! I may have a problem with water hammer or pockets of air or whatever in my plumbing system. In order to troubleshoot, I want to drain the water from the pipes for the whole house and then refill it. What should I do with the water in water heater and water softner? Do I drain the water heater and water softner? Just turn power off on my Kenmore water softner? or use bypass valve? Thanks for your time!
Answer: turn off the heater. shut the valve to prevent siphoning. by-pass the softener. install water hammer devices sold at your hardware store. you may need a few if four house is big. if you need to you can use compression fittings or tiger gripps.
Question: What could be the source of water hammer? It seems that plumbing in my house has a problem with water hammer. First, I thought it only occurs when toilet tanks are filling back with water, but I realized that it happens whenever water is used anywhere in home. It just that water hammer is not as bad when I use faucets. So I've been trying to figure out where or source of this water hammer. By listening to where the sound is coming from, and by touching the water pipe with my finger tips, I learned that sound is loudest where the main water pipe comes in through the concrete wall. I guess I can install a water hammer arrestor. But I am trying to understand why water hammer is occuring. Here is my guess. Please let me know what you think. There is a branch near this point where pipe leads out to the faucet outside the house. While water tries to flow further into the house, perhaps vacumm is being created in this branch pipe and causing water hammer. Is this possible? What do you think? Thanks!
1. Noise comes from pipes near water main, not the toilets. noise just louder with toilets, reduced intake valve and reduced noise
2. With my fingertips, I can feel the pipe vibrating.
3. Perhaps water traveling to water softner and bouncing back?
4. Checked diaphram valve on toilet, it looked fine.
---------
I guess I'll just install couple water arrestors and see what happens...
Answer: A Plummer once told me that the water hammer was caused by air in the water lines. To cure this he shut off the water at the main and drained all the line by opening all the faucets. After water quit running he turned the water back on leaving the all the faucets open after about a half hour he started turning the faucets off one at a time. When he was finished there was no more hammering sounds. When I say all the facuets I mean all outside and inside.
Question: Can bath water or water from a washing machine be used to water the lawn? My daughter asked me why we waste our bath water and the water that is flushed down the drain from our washing machine? She wanted to know if there was a way we could recycle the water and use it to water our lawn or garden? She is learning about going green. Could this water be recycled and used again??
where can i find info about this???
wi ll the "gray water" hurt the lawn or garden if it has laubdry soap or bleach in it?
Answer: some areas do not permit the use of gray water, due to the possiblity of bacterial contamination.... I had a system rigged up to save my washer's wash and rinse water to save my garden during a recent drought and later learned that it is illegal in my area..... *(I think they're knuts!!)
gray water cannot be stored... if used at all, it must be transferred to the ground right from the washer or tub..... reason being the bacteria growth....
one would not use the bleach water..... and hot water washes need a way to cool first....
I had my washer's drain hose attached to a long plastic tubing hose that went out the kitchen window and into a child's plastic wading pool.... from there, a heavy duty pond pump moved water out of the pool to sections of the garden that needed it....or the whole family did a bucket brigade kind of thing to empty the pool before the rinse cycle kicked in.....
we watered at the ground level to avoid soap on the plants.... even tho it would help with bugs, if you cannot RINSE it off the plants, there's a chance of it hurting more than helping.....
in the bath, you could save the water that runs while it's getting hot, in a bucket, as long as you can get it out of there without dripping thru the house.... and that dripping is the problem with using the bath water.... moms get kinda cranky about water trails thru her kitchen.....
tell your daughter thank you for being smart and concerned!....but check to make sure it's okay to use gray water in your area before you do.... I'd hate for someone to get in trouble for the use... seems to me to be a dumb law when there's a real need and folks are willing.....
Question: Is drinking water such as Ozarka good for fish? I have noticed that my 5-gallon fish tank loses water as the weeks go by. This causes the water level to go below the top of the filtration unit, which causes less water to get filtrated. That's why I want to put more water.
I can't use tap water because my dechlorination tablets are for ten gallons of water and I need to put in less than half a gallon.
Will it be safe for my fish if I put in Ozarka drinking water?
Answer: Bottled drinking water will often still have chlorine or chloramines in it, which are toxic for fish. Your best bet is to get a big bucket and put in 5 or 2.5 gallons of water and then break one of your tablets in half or into quarters and drop it in. Then top off your tank with that water whenever it needs it.
Question: Is drinking water from a water softener at your home healthy? We have just purchased a home with a salt water softener. The water is all foamy and cloudy when it comes out of the faucet and there is no bypass - ALL the water in the house runs through it. There are 4 of us and 3 pets. Is it healthy/safe to drink softened water or should we get a water cooler for drinking and cooking?
Answer: If it has a water purifier than it's fine, however the softener has just that in it, softener. I recommend the PUR system that hooks onto your faucet. They even have the one that has flavored cartridges so you can drink both plain and flavored. It's available at Target for about $50. It's alot cheaper than buying bottled water which runs around $5 for every 24 bottles you buy. Hope this helps!;)
P.S. Water has flouride but you can get flouride in ACT mouthwash now. It's more important for you to drink water that's purified than to worry about flouride. I've been in dental for almost 20 yrs and the ACT is wonderful and you only use it once a day, preferrably before bed.
Question: Is irrigation water ok to use on a vegetable garden? We have culinary water for our house and secondary (irrigation) water for our sprinkler system in our lawn. We recently installed a spigot next to our garden that feeds off the irrigation water, sprinkler system. We thought it would be cheaper to use the irrigation water on the garden because we water so much, but now I've heard that irrigation water can be hazardous to use on vegetable that we will be eating. Is this true?
Answer: Only if you are near a major fertilizer maker or other dangerous chemical manufacturer. Such as pesticides, etc. Irrigation water is excellent for watering gardens, but I would recommend having at least tested two years in a row for dangerous chemicals. If it turns up clean two years in a row, it's a pretty safe bet you are o.k.
Question: What rate is the water level decreasing when the water is 2m deep? A water tank has the shape of an inverted circulur cone with base radius 3m and height 10m.
(a) If water is leaking out of the tank at a rate of 1m^3/min, at what rate is the water level decreasing when the water is 2m deep?
(b) If the empty tank is being filled with water at a rate of 1.5m^3/min find the rate at which the water level is rising when the water is 7m deep.
Answer: Volume of cone = V = (1/3)(pi)(r^2h)
where
r = radius of cone
h = height of cone
By similar triangles,
(3/10) = r/h
hence, r = 0.6h
Substituting r = 0.6h in the volume formula for the cone,
V = (1/3)(pi)(0.6h)^2(h)
V = (1/3)(pi)(0.36h^3)
V = 0.12(pi)h^3
Differentiating,
dV/dT = 0.12(pi)(3h^2)(dh/dT)
Solving for (dh/dT),
(dh/dT) = (dV/dT)/(0.12 * pi * 3h^2)
and at h = 2,
(dh/dT) = (-1)/(0.12 * 3.1416 * 3(2^2))
(dh/dT) = -1/4.5239
(dh/dT) = -0.221 m^3/min.
b) When the tank is being filled, the same original function and its derivative are still the same. Substituting
dV/dt = 1.5 m^3/min
h = 7 m
then
(dh/dT) = 1.5/(.12 * 3.1416 * 3(7)^2)
(dh/dT) = 1.5/55.418
(dh/dT) = 0.027 m^3/min.
Question: What should water temperature be during no sunlight periods, using a solar/electric water heater? We have solar water heating, but during off-peak hours, the electric water heater kicks in. ( Two hours in the evening and 1.5 hours in the early morning) The water is 140 degrees. Is this normal? I know the thermostat can be turned down on regular water heaters, but does it need to be this hot because of the solar? Water is scalding hot!
Answer: I would think it needs to be turned down. They recommend a maximum 125 to prevent scalding.
I have only worked on a few solar systems but they all used a "regular" water heater to supplement the heat and store the warmed water. They were just plumbed differently.
Usually they were set lower and on all the time. Lower so they did not try to heat the water going through the solar panels.
But it is near impossible for us to tell you how yours is set up, the logic of the system. We know nothing about it, how it is plumbed, what controls, even how it works normally.
I don't know if you have two tanks or one and the single tank is for both storage and heating.
The main reason people turn up the temp is if the water is hotter you use less. So at 140 you might get three showers first thing in the morning, but at 125 degrees maybe only two without time in between heating water.
I say try it. I can't think of any reason lowering the temp would be a problem, except for capacity as mentioned.
Good Luck.
Question: Why does my water smell like sulfur and how do I eliminate the problem? OK, first of all here's my raw water quality: 350TDS, 1.4ppm Iron, 20 grains hardness, no sulfur. Now, softened water quality: 375TDS, 0ppm Iron, 0 grains hardness, unknown sulfur quantity. Private well. Inline sediment filter installed. Hot water heater is about 140 degrees and anode rod is removed.
Toilet bowls acquire a thin, orangish slime over a period of about 2 weeks. Inside of toilet tanks can sometimes coated with black or dark gray slime. Cold, softened water smells like eggs. Hot water is hard to tell, though may be slightly detectable. No iron stains on fixtures or corrosion.
I've shocked chlorinated entire system. Only helped temporarily. Sulfur test done by technician on raw water. I will try for softened water also.
Any ideas and what to do about it? Thanks for any help!
Answer: You might need a new anode rod in the water heater, but that would only affect the hot water. You will need to install an iron ox. Looks just like a water softener without the extra salt tank on the side of it.
Question: Can heavy water be made at home? What is the easiest way to make heavy water? I know large commercial industries use the girder sulphide process but what about distillation. If distilled regular water was heated to 100 degrees celsius at sea level, the regular water would boil off leaving the heavy water behind. I know that this would take a lot of energy and i think out of 3.6L of water i would only get 1mL of heavy water but i was just wondering.
Answer: see the Pearson's chi square test

Answer: Sounds like you have air in your lines somewhere. Possible leak that is letting the air in even after you have ran the water for five minutes.
Question: What do water desalinating plants dilute brine with before returning it back to the ocean? I read in an article that it takes two gallons of sea water to make one gallon of fresh water. My question is the left over water or brine is twice as salty as regular sea water. Plants say the dilute before returning it back to the ocean. My question is, dilute it with what? If obtaining fresh water is the goal, are they just taking that fresh water back and mixing it with the brine?
Answer: No, the desalinating plants will dilute the brine with more salt water because the brine is sometime more salt than water and hard to pass thru the pipes back to the ocean. Hope this clears up the confusion.
Question: When boiling water for pasta, is it better to start with cold water or hot water out of the sink? For some reason I remember hearing from my dad when I was younger that you should always start with cold water, but i cant remember why. Now I am in college trying to cook for myself and some kids are starting with hot water, while other kids are starting with cold water.
Answer: Use cold water, never use hot water out of your tap for drinking or for cooking.
14. Can I drink hot tap water?
No, don't use hot water from the tap for food or beverage preparation. Your hot water systems (tanks, boilers) contain metallic parts that corrode over time and contaminate the hot water. Instead, use cold water and heat it up for warm beverages or food preparation.
