Question: WATERMELON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? is the liquid in watermelon, watermelon juice, or water?
Answer: water. I think the watermelon is 98% water. SO it is water
Question: If a female watermelon flower is unfertilised (or not pollinated) how big will it grow? I ask because I thought I was doing so well - I finally had a little watermelon girl growing after months of waiting. But last night the watermelon just fell off the vine. It is about the size of a gherkin or perhaps slightly smaller. I want to know if it came off because it was not fertilised? Or did some other factor knock it off the vine eg. wind or animals. How big would a watermelon grow if not pollinated? Thanks!
Answer: The accumulation of sugars takes place in the later stages of fruit development and can be slowed by excessive rains or severe drought, nutrient stress, or by disease and insect damage to the foliage of the plants.
Question: How is watermelon good for one's health? Lately, I've been eating more watermelon as a snack, and I was wondering, how is watermelon healthy for a person? What are the benefits from eating watermelon? Some fruits have higher nutrients (zinc, etc.), but what does watermelon contain? How can it benefit one's health? How is watermelon good for one's health?
Answer: Well for a start watermelon has a lot in common with the drug viagra. I heard that on the radio recently. Ok other than the obvious benefits viagra allows you to dilate your blood vessels(allowing more oxygen) with nitric oxide. Watermelon produces the amino arginine, which is required to make nitric oxide.
There are no conclusive tests yet that arganine will affect you in the *humph* way, but its definitely a precursor.
Also watermelon is low in calories and it has potassium(which lowers stress levels) and the phytonutrients lycopene(prevent heart and kidney disease, the decay of the brain and nervous system as a result of aging, fighting cancerous cells to prevent DNA damage and cellular damage from aging) and beta-carotene(which turns into retinol, helps prevent night blindness, eye problems and skin disorders. Oh also an antioxidant as well so helps fight the aging process).
Thats about all I can cover.
Question: How to prevent foliar mold on Watermelon plants? I've started about 30 watermelon plants on peat pots (Moons and Stars and Black Diamond). All are doing very well and look to be about ready to transplant into the garden. I have however heard that they are prone to a deadly white powdery mold on their leaves. How can I prevent this from happening to mine?
Also this is my first time growing watermelons of any type so any other tips from people experienced with these varieties of watermelons are greatly appreciated!!
Answer: Just watch closely. When the mold first starts to show, mix together (50/50) medicated baby powder and Cinnamon (it contains a naturally occurring fungicide called "ortho-methoxyannamaldehyde") and sprinkle the mix on the mold.
Question: How can You tell if the watermelon is ripe enough ? I have heard from people that if you knock on the waermelon and if it is hollow its a ripe watermelon. But I really hate it when you spend like five bucks on a watermelon and it does not taste good. Does anyone know how to determine a reallly goood watermelon is there a secret or is it just unpredictable?
Answer: Before the seedless watermelon came out, you could SHAKE a watermelon...if you could hear the seeds rattling, that meant the melon was ready to be cut open.
You are right about knocking on it.
Also, as with most fruit, if you can find one that is relatively heavy for its size. Don't worry if you see a slight indentation, or a yellow look, or scarring on the outside. That means nothing.
Don't buy a watermelon out of season. they are awful.
Question: Do Watermelon trees die after the first harvest and you have to plant new ones again or do they last for more? I bought some watermelon and rockmelon seeds from bunnings and I just needed to know.
Trees, vines it doesn't matter, whatever they grow on.
Answer: Watermelon plants die after the first harvest and you have to plant new ones again.
Question: How fast was the watermelon traveling when it hit the ground 7.80 seconds after falling? In a bizarre but harmless accident, a watermelon fell from the top of the Eiffel Tower. How fast was the
watermelon traveling when it hit the ground 7.80 seconds after falling?
Answer: Was it an African or European Watermelon?
Question: How long does it take for a watermelon to harvest after a flower appears? I have a couple of watermelon plants growing in my back yard. We had family over and two children were eating watermelon and they wanted to plant the seeds, believe it or not there are three plants growing and they are growing like crazy!! I sware they grow everyday! Well today I noticed at least two yellow flowers on the plants. Will it produce anything? How long does it take for a watermelon to grow after a flower appears.
Answer: It depends on the variety of melon, and where you live whether you will get anything or not. If you live in the north, there probably will not be enough hot weather left for melons to grow and ripen before frost kills them. If you live in the south, there might be achance.
You need to take a good look at the flowers as they come out. If they have little bulges at the base where it joins the stem, it is a female flower. If it doesn't, it is a male flower. If you want melons from the vine, you have to have both types of flowers growing and bees, butterflies or moths to spread the pollen. If all of the flowers are either male or female, you will not get any fruit.
Question: Where can you buy whole watermelon in central Ohio at this time of year? I love watermelon, and I have been eating a lot of it lately. The problem is that where I live, in central Ohio, you can only buy a few slices at a time or by the cup cut up. And they are expensive that way. Where can I find some uncut, whole watermelons around my area?
Obviously if I had in my local grocery store I wouldn't need to ask this question.
Krogers only has cut-up or sliced, and Buehler's is the same.
Answer: Near Columbus? Try Krogers or Big Bear (if it still exists). Also Giant Eagle...
Wow, you have a Buehlers? No Hawkins, I bet. We have Marc's up North. They have whole watermelons. Good luck...
Question: How do you cut a watermelon nice and clean? Whenever I cut watermelons, either there's more watermelon on one side than the other, or the slice is really messy. How do I cut it nicely?
Answer: Your knife isn't sharp enough.
Question: How do I breed a watermelon with cockroaches? I love watermelons but I hate picking out pits from it! How do I make it so that after cutting the watermelon the pits would just run away themselves? It would be so much easier!
Answer: I would recommend not breeding the cockpits (as I have come to affectionately call them). I would just have Chuck Norris on standby. He could scare the pits out of the watermelon.
If you do decide to proceed with your genetic experiment, you will need some supplies:
Tequila
Mini blindfolds
Barry White CD's and/or footage from the discovery channel of insects mating
Camera
Oatmeal (in case you get hungry)
Vaseline
Some sturdy rope
You could take a shortcut and just stick the roach and watermelon seeds together with scotch tape, soak them with tequila, leave them in a shoebox overnight, and see what kind of zany adventures occur.
Question: How do I make a watermelon sorbet? Well I have an ice cream/sorbet maker and fresh watermelon. I've never actually heard of a watermelon sorbet before but I'd like to give it a try. How should it be made? What else should I add to the ice cream maker?
Answer: Watermelon sorbet recipe
Taste this great watermelon sorbet recipe.
For this recipe you will need:
1/2 cup corn syrup
2/3 cup sugar
1 watermelon
4 tablespoons lime juice
2 tablespoons grenadine
Take the watermelon and cut off the rind. With your hands pick out all the seeds, while at the same time breaking up the melon into pieces. Take half of the melon, place that amout of melon into the blender with all sugar. Mix until the melon and sugar are combined thoroughly. Take the other half and put it in the blender with the corn syrup. Mix together. In a large bowl mix the 2 portions together. If needed, use a hand-blender to liqueify the contents. Place liquefied watermelon into a container and freeze.
Question: If a watermelon and a grape were in outer space, would the grape orbit around the watermelon? And would the watermelon create gravity? If there were little specks of paper would they fall towards the watermelon's surface?
Answer: Possibly. The thing is that the objects are so small that the gravity created by them is going to be minuscule. With the grape and watermelon they would have to be almost an infinite distance away from anything else so that they were not disturbed. The grape would have to travel so slowly as to appear stationary with respect to the watermelon even when viewed over a period of months. Any faster than that and it will be faster than the minuscule escape velocity of the watermelon.
Question: What's the difference between watermelon and cantaloupe? I'm not into watermelon, but I do like cantaloupe. I know one has red flesh and the other an orange-ish flesh, but maybe its something about the fleshes' texture is why I like the one over the other.
Anyone know the difference between the flesh texture of watermelon and cantaloupe?
Answer: Watermelon is named that for a reason, it is more "watery" than a cantaloupe (92% is water!). It has a very faint flavor in comparison to cantaloupe, and the texture is different, almost gritty if you focus on it while eating. While there are "seedless" varieties, perhaps having spit out/avoid seeds is bothersome to you.
I actually prefer watermelon to cantaloupe. What do you think of honeydew melon? You might like that better than watermelon
Question: How can you pick a good watermelon? I sometimes have a hard time picking a watermelon that's sweet or hasn't gone bad. How can you pick a good watermelon?
Answer: coming from Indiana, there are things to look for besides 'thumping', look at the watermelon, it should be faded on top, and look between the stripes they should be light green, on the belly side of the watermelon 'the belly spot' where it laid on the ground should be white or yellow with no stripes, also check your watermelon for blunt ends they should well rounded and blunt....not pointed...now if you still want to do the 'thumping method' thump the watermelon and unripe melon will make a 'ping' noise while the over ripe one will make a 'thud' pick one in between
