Fish Oils
Question: Fish Oils? Hi everyone! I read that people who don't eat fish should take a supplement, like fish oil. I bought some fish oil caplets, and it says I have to take 3 a day! That seems like a lot. I was just wondering if it's really worth the money to buy these things, and if I need to take 3 a day. Thanks!
I'm not able to eat fish.
Answer: buy the smallest bottle you can find and see if it sits well in your stomach. I know a couple of people that had hellatious burping that tasted like fish from it! Ack!
You may try eating flaxseed instead... still has omega-3's, no fish taste, high in fiber.
Question: What can you take to reduce free radicals, and what is the name of the fish oils you can take that are so good? I remember reading somewhere about fish oils that are so good for the body, but I cant remember the initials. Anyone? Thanks.
Answer: To reduce free radicals, you need antioxidants. Recent studies suggest oxidative stress may increase the likelihood of strokes and neurodegenerative diseases. Common antioxidant supplements are vitamins A, C, and E. Antioxidant rich foods include blueberries, red beans, pinto beans, cranberries, artichokes and blackberries.
Supplementary fish oils contain Omega 3 fatty acids EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) the most useful function of which, is that they reduce inflammation throughout the body.
Flax seed oil is another good source of these Omega 3s.
Omega 6s, on the other hand, are not found in fish oil.
Dietary sources of Omega 6 fatty acids include nuts, most vegetable oils, evening primrose oil, borage oil, blackcurrant seed oil, flax/linseed oil, hemp oil, soybean oil, sunflower seed oil and pumpkin seeds.
Question: Are organic fish oils supplements healthy? and which is the best brand for fish oils supplements? I heard that fish oils have a high concentration of mercury so if I take organic fish oils supplements would it be healthy?
Answer: Fish oil is great for you for many reasons! Log on to alapaugh.qhealthbeauty.com They have all organic supplements including omega3 (healthy fish oils). They have many variations of Omega 3 including Veggie 150 Omega Complex that is actually fish free! I encourage you to check it out! :)

Question: Essential fish oils for people who have shellfish allergies? I have a shellfish allergy, and I have heard of the benfits for your skin to take fish oils, especially cod liver oil, etc. Is it possible for someone with a shellfish allergy to take these supplements, do they have any traces of shellfish in them?
Answer: They probably do have traces of shellfish, if they were processed in the same plant. There are non-animal sources for all of the nutrients in those oils. Flax oil is a great Omega 3 source, for example.
Question: What is the optimal daily intake in mg for Fish Oils? I've just purchased Nordic Natural fish oils, the directions say 1000mg a day, but I've read online that you can take up to 3000mg a day and have more beneficiary effects so I'm thinking 2000, thoughts and experiences are appreciated.
Answer: Probably the optimum amount would be 1,800 mg a day.
Most 1,000 mg capsules contain 300 mg of combined DHA and EPA (120 mg DHA and 180 mg EPA) so that equates to 6 capsules a day, ie 1,800 mg of combined DHA and EPA.
Some 1,000 mg capsule containers recommend as much as 9 capsules a day and some recommend as little as 3 capsules a day so. Perhaps taking 9 capsules a day gives you no real extra benefits and perhaps taking only 3 capsules a day only gives you minimum benefits. Taking 9 capsules a day would still be quite safe as that equates to 2,700 mg of combined DHA plus EPA. Taking more than 3,000 mg a day could be regarded as overdoing it and may well be unsafe and perhaps even dangerous.
Question: Are fish oils supplements supposed to clear up acne or CAUSE it? I hear fish oils clear up skin but it seems like I have been breaking out since I began taking them, what's up with that?
Answer: Yes I agree that fish oils are beneficial that can help with acne. You see Omega 3 fatty acids is found in fish oils which helps reverses the inflammation causing acne. These can be found in fish such as tuna, sardines, macherel and salmon. Eating these foods once or twice a week is sufficient as part of a healthy balanced diet.
Hope this is helpful.
Question: Do fish from the Arctic contain all of the Essential Omega 3 oils? I am looking for a good fish oil supplement and want to be sure I choose the best one for lowering my risk of heart disease. Thanks!
Answer: When choosing an Omega 3 fish oil supplement I think its important to look for one that uses only high-quality formulas that are mercury-free. One thing I've learned to look for in the research I've been doing over the past few years is to make sure the supplement you take has high levels of DHA and EPA Omega-3s for the best prevention of all the possible diseases that could be caused from deficiencies. Anyway I use one called Arctic Essentials because it has 1600 total Omega 3's and it comes from deep-sea fish (no contaminations). It's helped lower my cholesterol and some of my joint pain has lessened in the past few months. The website is probably the best source of information if you want to check out the product, I highly recommend it.
Question: Besides fish oils what can I do to get rid of mini schnauzer's dry skin? I have a mini schnauzer she is over a year old and has very dry skin since i brought her home at 8 weeks. the vet gave me fish oils to mix with her food which she loves, but doesn't get rid of the dry skin and makes her beard disgusting lol. She gnaws at her tail which is very dry, i feel so bad. she has a sensitive stomach and Iams food agrees with her. What can I do for her? :)
Answer: Well, the Iams may agree with her stomach, but not her skin. I would suggest that you try some better quality dog food such as Canidae, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, etc. Innova is also very good, but can be a little rich for some dogs. Just make sure to you make the transition from one dog food to another very, very slowly. Also, you can try some of the specialty shampoos that are readily available at Petco, Petsmart, etc. Many are made specifically for dry skin and can help at a topical level. However, I do think her basic problem is the diet which should be addressed.
Question: Can anyone help with information about fish oils? I want to try my ADD family members on fish oil as it is often mentioned as a useful part of the armoury to help manage the condition. I have been advised to choose a supplement with 3 times higher amounts of EPA to DHA. However, I am finding it very hard to find a supplement with those proportions available in the UK. Any ideas gratefully received!
Answer: You don't need supplements, you get all your vitamins & minerals from the healthy foods you eat FREE from Mother Nature not made by man. Not just fish oil. You need at least 2-3 servings a week. When your nails, and hair are growing normally, you know the rest of you is healthy! People spend $20 billion per year on vitamins and supplements. According to Everyday Health, here's an article that will tell you why . . . those PRODUCTS by any other name do NOT WORK. It is false advertisements.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have to approve supplements — no agency in the United States does. So it’s up to consumers to bring health concerns to light. “It’s important to understand the difference between over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements,” say Pieter Cohen, MD, an internist at Cambridge Health Alliance and instructor at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Mass. The FDA gets involved only after the fact, if the supplement later appears to be causing harm. By that time, the supplement may already have harmed many consumers who used it. “The burden of proof is on the FDA to determine [a supplement] is dangerous and remove it from the market,” Cohen says. Consumer complaints are the primary trigger for investigations. One recent investigation of the dietary weight-loss supplement ephedra resulted in it being banned for sale in the United States.

Answer: no, just the same
Question: Which foods have fish oils in? i have bumpps on my knees because i don't eat enough fish oil, but i ahte taking tablets so what food contains fish oil?
Answer: My first guess was obviously fish, so I found this:
Fatty fish like mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are high in two kinds of omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
...
tofu and other forms of soybeans, canola, walnut and flaxseed, and their oils. These contain alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), which can become omega-3 fatty acid in the body.
Hope that helps =)

Question: Can a dog take human meds such as fish oils, and joint medication? Have a 10, and 14 year old dogs. One has congestive heart failure, and is taking meds. One has some arthritis, and tends to have hip pain, mainly when it rains.
Answer: Talk to your vet about dosages to be sure. I know some people give their dogs glucosamine, which is the same thing people take for joint problems. But I'm not sure what the dosage is.
Do NOT give your dog any medicine without checking with the vet, some over the counter medications can kill them.
Question: Do YOU know how long it takes for omega fish oils to show effect in the body? Any useful supporting weblinks? I am researching for a very close friend of mine who is circumlocuting harmful pharmaceutical drugs for a OCD condition. If you have a useful answer, please do care to support a natural supplementary diet of an individual who is ameliorating their life quality. Thank you for your time and God bless.
Answer: This is sort of a tricky question. Omega fish oil must be taken in fairly high doses to have any therapeutic effect. So, if your friend isn't taking 3 GRAMS of EPA & DHA (Omega 3 fatty acids), she may NEVER see any effects. To obtain that, depending upon the source your friend may have to take up to 10 grams of fish oil... YUK!
My husband swears by Heart Health Essential Omega III. It has all the EPA & DHA reccommended and Vitamin E as well.
You can buy it on line at www.patrusso.com
Email Pat if you have any questions about the product. He'll get back to you with a source for more information right away.
