Question: Can you start a garden on top of a preexisting garden? We had a small vegetable garden and a few months ago some major life things happened so we completely forgot about our garden. What I was wondering, is do we need to pull up all of the dead plants or can we just bury them there? Would this nutritionalize the soil or would it just be better to pull them all up? I think the only reason they are dead is that they starved to death because we forgot to water them for a few monthes, and didn't protect them during the winter.

Answer: If the plants were diseased you may have to start anew. You should pull up the dead plants and throw them away. This is important because some disease can live in the soil for many years. You must also before you take any action, you should identify what the problem is. (I.E. Is it Root Root (Phytophthora?, Nematodes?) But if you know that it is free of these pest then you can put it over but generally, you want to removes the previous plants. If you don't then you run the risk of re infecting the plants. Nothings to stop you from doing that, however. But if You want to, you can experiment with a crop and see what happens then and take the steps to prevent. The reason is I suggest crop rotation if you must plant in the same space again as some "pests" cannot survive in the host's absence. The key her is prevention and it will save you a lot down the road. Keep the plants healthy and you should do fine. Good Luck!

Question: Planning my garden for spring - would it be ok to move an established Lilac bush or simply plant a new one? I have a large garden with some spring bulb flowers, planning on some Glads, and would like to establish some flowering bushs - a portion of this garden gets full sun and about 1/3 is afternoon shade.

Answer: You can move your established bushes in any month that has an R in it as long as the ground can be dug. Since lilacs establish their bloom buds the year before you will lose those blooms, and 3 years or longer you won't see any blooms. Just depends on how hard the transplant was to your bushes. I would say that fall is a better time than spring to move these plants based on experience, because they begin to prepare for the long rest period of winter and begin to go dormant. Spring they begin to put their energy into growth and can be shocked terribly. Hope this helps

Question: How should I separate my small garden from my grass? No experience with gardening!! I just bought a house with a small (4' x 3') garden in the backyard. Right now the garden is empty but I hope to get some flowers & bushes in soon. Do I need to separate the garden from the surrounding grass with some sort of barrier so they don't grow into each other? Or will the roots of the plants keep each other from overgrowing? Secondly, I am looking for a hardy ground-covering type plant that grows with minimal care and perhaps has some nice flowers. Any suggestions?

Answer: If it was me I'd want to put in a barrier to prevent the grass from constantly encroaching on the garden. The ditch and landscape timbers can work, but more effective barriers would be: 1) tear off the sod around the garden spot (about a foot width) and a little deeper than just the sod. Then line with plastic (heavy duty plastic garbage bags work just fine, make sure to do a good job of overlapping the plastic. Then fill with rock...I find that works really well for many years 2) find a good edging... find something that will go down into the ground about 8inches. Don't get the 4" stuff...it's just not enough. Find any kind of edging or material that will let you put a wall down into the ground about 8" and that should prevent things from going into your garden. As another poster said, 4' x 3' is a very small garden...you will not be able to do much with it. Most plants get big fast! :) Have fun!

Question: will my garden grow where there used to be a pine tree? i recently moved into my house. in the backyard there was a stump tree. i decided to grow a garden around it. After digging up most of the soil my neighbor came by and said i would have trouble growing anything because that stump was a old pine tree. i didnt remove the stump but removed tons of its roots(electric saw:-) that would interfere with planting. My question would the acidity affect my future veggie garden?

Answer: The soil in that area will be slightly acid, so I suggest that you get a soil test kit at a local Farm and garden store and follow the directions to test your soil. If that sounds like too much work (it is not) But if it sounds like too much work, then get several bags of lime and work them into the soil. The problem is that lime is very slow acting so this years garden might be a mess. But with adding lime spring and fall, you will change the PH for the more neutral number of 7 that most plants need to grow at. Or maybe your efforts will pay off and your neighbor is an old grouch! But , just in case he is correct.......ADD lime!

Question: How can I get my garden to grow? I live in Illinois and for several years have tried to plant a garden of different vegetables in my backyard and have had no success. I do not know what I am doing wrong. The place where I have decided to plant the garden gets a lot of sun light during the day plus it does get shade. I have used many different fertilizers to get to grow but nothing seems to work. I want to grow cucumbers and pumpkins this summer. What do I need to do to get my garden to grow?

Question: How do I start a garden in my backyard? Im 14 years old, (I'll be 15 years old on Sunday, Feb. 25th) and I am wanting to start a garden from scratch this summer. I would like to grow raspberries, and any pretty flowers that will grow in a kinda sunny and shady area. Answer: Be sure to pick an area that will get plenty of sunshine, areas with a lot of trees are not good. Check the soil, if it is claylike and sticks to your hands a lot it will need conditioners, peat moss and bark mulch work well. You will need to till the soil, you can probably rent a rototiller for $8-20 per hour from a local rental agency, talk a relative into it, or hire an odd job worker. Next you will pick your plants, plants with small seeds should be purchased from a nursery (tomatoes, peppers) You can plant some small seeded items early, such as carrots (they are the exception you can plant them in rows, you do not purchase them as plants). Get some cucumbers, squash, melons, pumpkins, and lots of tomatoes, these are all easy to grow. The best watering system is drip or soaker hoses, but a frogeye sprinkler will also work, be sure to water in the morning or night if using a sprinkler. Plant in rows, water regularly, and watch your vegetables grow, it's great fun. Don't slack on the weed pulling. Use mulch to cut down on the work.

Question: How do i get my garden ready? Alright, so i just got some peas and pumkins to plant in my garden. However, this garden hasnt been used in a while, lets say about 2 years. It had once very rich soil, but now, grass, and weeds have taken over! How can i get my garden ready again? Answer: Well, you could just buy a square shovel, edge out the area you want to plant in and get rid of about 1 inch of weed/grass and soil. By throwing this grass and soil somewhere else (woods, compost etc) you can then add bags of good healthy soil on top. Also, invest in a little "Quick Start" for your seeds. It's from Miracle Grow. Question: How can I move my garden shed across my lawn without dismatling the shed or ruining my lawn? It measures approximately 6' x 4' and is very heavy. I have a walled garden with the only access through the house so I can't bring any motorised equipment into the garden. My lawn is well established and 100' long and I want to move the shed to the far end of the garden with minimal damage to the lawn.

Answer: We moved ours quite simply and did not have to buy fence posts or anything. First we emptied it out, then I had 3 friends come around and we lifted the shed one end at a time and slid ropes underneath. Then the four of us just grabbed hold of an end of rope each, lifted together and walked across the garden. This was a 8ft x 6ft shed and it took longer to empty it out than to move it. Make sure you have the final laydown area ready beforehand as you do not want to have to do it twice.

Question: My garden is boggy and wet and holds lots of water. How can I dry it out? I currently live in Germany and our house is on the edge of a large Forrest. My garden holds a lot of water and is very soft under foot. Without installing a proper drainage system, how can I dry it out?

Answer: make holes in the ground (drill them) as deep as is needed. You need to drill to see if the underground is stone or a very hard kind of soil. Maybe if that is the case you can break this layer in the hole. Put gravel or branches in the hole. if the soil is very stoney you could try to dig a trench to collect the water and lead it to a low point.

Question: How do I start a vegetable garden in Vermont? There is a run down used-to-be garden in the corner of my property, and i want to turn it into a functioning garden again. Trouble is, I have never had a garden before. I need to know what kind of things I can grow considering where I live, how soon I should start, and how to get everything ready to plant. Can anyone help?

Answer: For a really good detailed list of what should be planted when in your area, get a farmer's almanac. Also, the information will be on your seed packets. They will show a small map of the U.S. to show what zone you're in, so you'll know when to plant. Good crops to start with will be tomatoes (from plants), peppers (also from plants), zucchini (be sure you have a lot of friends/family if you plant much), radishes, carrots, beets, pumpkins or other winter squash, and lettuce. I wouldn't start with green beans (a lot of work) or corn (not a lot of bang for your buck). Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, zucchini, and cucumbers can all be planted under black plastic, and if you plant much, I'd recommend it. Roll out your black plastic, secure the corners and edges to keep the wind from pulling it up, cut X's (every 3' for all but the zucchini, and 4' for them) in the plastic, and plant your plants/seeds in them (make the holes a little bigger for seeds, and watch them to make sure the plants don't get covered by the plastic when they sprout). For tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, pour a cup of Miracle Gro for tomatoes (mixed per the directions) in with them (they're all members of the nightshade family, so it will work for all of them). For the others, use regular Miracle Gro. Plant the tomato plants all the way up to the first branch of leaves--the small hairs will turn into roots and make them more hardy. The rest should be planted only to the level they come at. When you plant the zucchini, plant about 3-4 seeds in each hole. Again, the seed packets will tell you how deep you should plant everything.

Question: My garden is regularly visited by cats. What stops them using freshly dug ground as a toilet? I don't want to hurt these animals, just keep them from leaving deposits on my garden every night.

Answer: THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THAT CATS DON'T LIKE TO "WALK" ON. I HAVE USED PINE CONES PICKED UP FROM VARIOUS PUBLIC PINE TREES. THESE ARE ROUGH ON THEIR LITTLE FEET, BUT WON'T HURT THEM. ALSO LARGE BARK MUCH WILL DO PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING. ALSO HAVE HEARD OF PEOPLE USING 'MOTH BALLS' (WHICH YOU CAN GET AT WAL-MARTS) TO KEEP THEM AWAY. THEY HATE THAT SMELL! THERE ARE ALSO COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS THAT YOU CAN GET LIKE "SCAT AWAY",ETC. THAT YOU SPRAY AROUND THE AREA AND IT KEEPS THE ANIMALS AWAY.

Question: How many different garden gnomes do the nice folks at Travelocity have on staff? And what kind of benefits do they get besides free travel? Health insurance, 401(k), what? Are they unionized? If I were 3 feet shorter, could I be one? I mean, I can grow a beard and everything . . . Just asking. Oh yeah, and are they discriminatory? Answer: I don't know about foxes but for sure I know about cats. Sprinkle little peices of orange peels or put something down that smells like oranges. I used to have this problem with my house plants. Worked like a charm. :)

Question: Aero Garden water level is reading low, but it really isnt how do i fix this? So my aero garden is constantly telling me that my water level is low. However it isnt! It is totally filled. How can i fix this? I think maybe the roots are just clogging things. Is this possible? Have you encountered this problem?
