Question: Are there any diseases that affects the whole digestive system ? Well if there are any disease that affects the whole digestive system , please tell me, and if not , at least tell me if there are any diseases that affects more than 4 organs in the digestive system. =]
thanks =]
LOL guys, i don't have any disease , specially this is a response to the first question -.-, this is actually a report =P
Answer: inflammatory bowel disease affects the whole digestive tract. It can be Crohn's disease(affects anywhere from the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, anus, & rectum. UC affects only the large colon, rectum, & anus.
The medications used to treat these illnesses have side effects that do affect the pancreas, liver, gallbladder, and even blood count. That is why it is so very important to keep MD appts., have the required blood tests, etc. to make sure that the organs are not affected.

Question: What are some common diseases that affect the digestive system?
Answer: I have sent you an email regarding this question.
Question: What are some diseases and disorders that affect the digestive system ? 6th grade science question.
list atleast three and how they affect the body and possible treatments .
thanks .
Answer: Crohns Disease:
Crohn’s disease is an ongoing disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive tract, also referred to as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Crohn’s disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus, but it most commonly affects the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum. The swelling extends deep into the lining of the affected organ. The swelling can cause pain and can make the intestines empty frequently, resulting in diarrhea.
Celiac Disease:
Celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance, is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 1331 Americans. Symptoms of celiac disease can range from the classic features, such as diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition, to latent symptoms such as isolated nutrient deficiencies but no gastrointestinal symptoms. The disease mostly affects people of European (especially Northern European) descent, but recent studies show that it also affects Hispanic, Black and Asian populations as well1. Those affected suffer damage to the villi (shortening and villous flattening) in the lamina propria and crypt regions of their intestines when they eat specific food-grain antigens (toxic amino acid sequences) that are found in wheat, rye, and barley3. Oats have traditionally been considered to be toxic to celiacs, but recent scientific studies have shown otherwise. This research is ongoing, however, and it may be too early to draw solid conclusions.
Lactose intolerance
Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest significant amounts of lactose, the major sugar found in milk. Lactose intolerance is caused by a shortage of the enzyme lactase, which is produced by the cells that line the small intestine. Lactase breaks down milk sugar into two simpler forms of sugar called glucose and galactose, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. Not all people deficient in lactase have the symptoms commonly associated with lactose intolerance, but those who do are said to have lactose intolerance.
Question: Digestive diseases: Celiac disease? This is for a science project on digestive diseases. I had finished my project on peptic ulcers but then I found out someone else in the class had chosen the same disease so the teacher told us that one of us had to choose something else. The other person had only printed out some stuff from the internet. I was the unfortunate one who was told to do my project on another disease. A bit unfair don't you think?
Anyway...
1. What are the causes of celiac disease? I know that it's genetic and even though some people may not show symptoms, it can be triggered by stress, pregnancy, surgery, infection, serious injury, childbirth, etc. but is there anything else which can cause it?
2. Are there any treatments for it apart from avoiding food containing gluten altogether (which is more a method of prevention than treatment) ?
These two points are the parts of my project I am unsure about.
Thanks in advance :)
Answer: Celiac is a genetic, autoimmune disease. Exposure to gluten stimulates your immune system.
You can have the genes, but not the disease, it seems to need to be triggered. There are many theories about how the disease is triggered, but there does seem to be a trigger. Basically a stress on the body, or eating gluten too early, or not breast feeding long enough, or even viral infections have been blamed. For me personally, it was after my son was born that I first noticed symptoms.
No, there is no cure for celiac, it is hard wired into our systems. The only "treatment" is to avoid gluten or anything contaminated with gluten (e.g. most oatmeal). There was talk about maybe an enzyme that would allow people to eat some gluten (like lactase pills can sometimes help people digest lactose who do not produce their own lactase) but nothing has really happened with it. I personally would never use it, there would be no gaurantee that the enzyme could really break down that 33 amino acid chain that is gluten before it hit my intestine and triggers a reaction!
Hope this helps and good luck on your report! Here is one of my fav websites for celiac education:

Question: What are some diseases associated with the DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?
Answer: Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, lactose intolerance, ulcers, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Question: What are some disorders or diseases of the excretory system and the digestive system?
Answer: Bowel cancer (aka colon cancer or colorectal cancer) is a fairly well known disease of the digestive system. With a death count of 665,000 people a year it is rather serious too, the third most common form of cancer in the western world. The lifetime risk of contracting it is only around 7% in America. though this increases with age. Reasons for contracting colorectal cancer could vary from inheritance by parents to smoking or eating a lot of not fully cooked meats. The treatment depends on the staging of the cancer. When colorectal cancer is caught at early stages (with little spread) it can be curable. However, when it is detected at later stages (when distant metastases are present) it is less likely to be curable. Surgery remains the primary treatment while chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy may be recommended depending on the individual patients staging and other medical factors.
Question: Can anyone think of any diseases that effect the digestive system?
Answer: cystic fibrosis affects the digestive system as well as the respiratory system
