Among the foods that I ate were two fruits mangosteen (Thai name is mangkoot) and the other was rambutan (ngor). I am not sure if they are imported to the states but, if they are and anyone knows where I might find them I would appreciate it. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and have looked at a few of the local Asian markets with no luck yet. Suggestions and/or ideas are welcome. Thanks.
Answer: Mangonsteen are in season right now. In Stockton, there's Super King - Asian store that sells them for $8/pound. I don't know if you have been to the one at King street in Daly City (Westmoore Blvd and Southgate Ave - might be 99 Ranch Market) where there's a large Asian stores, usually they have those kinds of fresh fruits also. I'm not sure about this year - haven't been there in a couple of years now. Or you can try Pacific Supermarket on Alemany. Rambutan might be out of season already.

Question: Is Sharon fruit and mangosteen one and the same fruit? I have seen pictures of the mangosteen and it looks very much like the sharon fruit apart from colour. I had one today and it tasted quite like a mango ....this set me off thinking that it might be the same fruit with a different name.
Answer: The sharon fruit is actually a persimmon, which is very sweet and could possibly taste very similar: Mangosteen: The fruit, capped by the prominent calyx at the stem end and with 4 to 8 triangular, flat remnants of the stigma in a rosette at the apex, is round, dark-purple to red-purple and smooth externally; 1 1/3 to 3 in (3.4-7.5 cm) in diameter. The rind is 1/4 to 3/8 in (6-10 mm) thick, red in cross-section, purplish-white on the inside. It contains bitter yellow latex and a purple, staining juice. There are 4 to 8 triangular segments of snow-white, juicy, soft flesh (actually the arils of the seeds). The fruit may be seedless or have 1 to 5 fully developed seeds, ovoid-oblong, somewhat flattened, 1 in (2.5 cm) long and 5/8 in (1.6 cm) wide, that cling to the flesh. The flesh is slightly acid and mild to distinctly acid in flavor and is acclaimed as exquisitely luscious and delicious.
Persimmon:Sharon-fruit is a good source of Vitamin A which is required for healthy skin, mucus membranes and for night vision. The fruit have significantly high levels of sodium, potassium and magnesium, iron, calcium. Eating one Sharon fruit a day is enough to help prevent heart attacks and reducing the risk of heart diseases.
An average size fruit is only 70 calories. Eaten fresh, Sharon fruit is a healthy, convenient snack for adults and children. Versatile in recipes, good for salads, dessert or stir-fries. Also now available in Sharon fruit flavours: Jams, atjar, chutney, dried fruit.

Question: Why are mangosteen fruit so expensive? I have been researching this fruit. The US just lifted a ban for import into the country. Growers are charging $11 for one tangerine size fruit. $46 for a pound. If this fruit is that expensive, do you think it has great value?
Answer: I'm a Malaysian too... yes the price over here is cheap. But the price that you've stated is really expensive. For your information we malaysians ourselves don't get to eat mangosteen all year long because it is a seasonal fruit. You can the fruit only in second quarter of the year. It is same as the "durians". Compared to other fruits which you can get easily over here, mangosteen is considered expensive over here as well.
Mangosteens are expensive in your place maybe is because it's seasonal and it is imported. Just like the imported fruits over here which is really expensive. The oranges and apples we can get it in any fruit hawkers and you can get it at RM5 / 10-12 pieces. But the strawberries, kiwi's, apricots, peaches and all other berry varieties will cost at least RM5 fruit or RM20++ per box of berries which consist of not more than 15-20 pieces.
I hope my answer has given you a good explanation...
Just feel free to ask more if you have any doubts...
