Question: How many potatoes are in 2 pounds? I am making mashed potatoes and we don't have any potatoes in the house. Instead of buying a huge bag, I only want to buy the amount I need (unless it turns out to be more expensive). The recipe calls for two pounds of potatoes. Does anyone know approximately how many potatoes that is?
Answer: 3
Question: When making German Potato Salad, is it acceptable to dice the potatoes and leave the skin on? I have to make like 15 pounds of German Potato Salad. In the past for my family I've made it just cubing the potatoes and leaving the skin on, however this time I am making it to share at two funeral luncheons. Skin on or off? If it makes a difference I'm using both red potatoes and run of the mill plain potatoes.
Answer: The red potatores I would leave, and the others I will peel. Brown potatoes have such thick skin and it disconnects and tastes all creepy. If you don't do that, at least wash them VERY well.
Question: How many potatoes do I need to make mashed potatoes for 24 people? I have to make mashed potatoes for our family's Thanksgiving dinner. There are approximately 24 people coming to eat. I have no idea how many potatoes I need to make enough mashed potatoes for everyone to have some. Is there a guide or rule of thumb I can go by? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
Answer: I generally use one potato per person. A 10lb bag sounds about right
Question: What kind of potatoes are not as bitter and earthy tasting as usual? Other than sweet potatoes, what type of potatoes are not as bitter. I love the taste of those potato flakes in boxes that you mix with some butter, water and milk. But when I try to eat a regular baked potato, it's always so bitter tasting and I taste dirt. Yuck. I hate it. So what potato does not taste like that?
Answer: Yukon Gold's are great potatoes and a little sweet naturally. Russett's are kind of dry and get mealy and are mostly good for baking.
Red or White Potatoes also make great mashed or potato salad.
Question: What type of potatoes are best in German potato salad? I'm making German potato salad for a cookout tomorrow and I wasn't sure what type of potatoes to use. I have white potatoes. Are those okay to use?
Answer: Overall I use Yukon Gold all the time. I find they adapt well to any recipe and they are actually good for you, unlike all of the white potatoes.
Additionally, I like their slightly buttery color. Fooling the eye is half the battle.
Question: Growing potatoes, can I cut off the leafy green part before harvesting the potatoes? I am growing red and Idaho potatoes and the leafy green part is overwhelming the garden. Can I cut off that part, if so how far to the ground, and will they keep growing? Just tell me as much as you know about growing and harvesting potatoes. Thx.
Can I tie the green tops together to keep them contained?
Answer: Potatoes aren't done until the plants die. If you cut them off, the potatoes will not grow any more than they have.
Question: Can you start growing potatoes in the garden from store bought ones? What I mean by store bought potatoes is the potatoes you buy from the grocery store. I love potatoes and I usually buy them from the store but I was wondering if you could use the store bought potatoes to start potato plants.
I've read what you people wrote and I was wondering could I take a potatoe stick in the some soil? Or do I have to wait for it to sprout?
Answer: leave the potatoes in a cool dry spot until they produce a bud around the eyes cut budded area out and plant approx 3/4 cm in a raised bed garden you can put the whole potatoe in the ground with the same results and you dont have to wait for the bud to even surface on the potatoe before planting. once the plant has raised through the soil keep the soil moist not wet to prevent root rot.
you will have a better yield with seperate cuttings rather than planting one whole potatoe.
good luck
Question: Has anyone made potato salad with baked rather than boiled potatoes? I've never heard of it but I'm making a big batch tonight and wondered if baking the potatoes would be a good idea. When I make it with boiled potatoes, I peel the potatoes after they're cooked.
Answer: Yes, I have, many a times. My Executive Chef would always have leftover Baked Potatoes from the previous nights serving and I took to using them for my Potato Salad the next day. I peel them, diced them up and heated them in a saute pan with some onions and raw bacon. Then, add what you like beyond that. The Bacon Fat would rehydrate the potatoes and give it more flavor along with the sauteed onions. What a Great way to use leftover, especially now with all of our summer parties and outside activities and BBQ'ing..............Potato Salad will not go to waste!
Question: Have you boiled potatoes for baked potato soup instead of baking them? I'm really craving some baked potato soup tonight, and I have a delicious recipe that I usually use, but it just takes so long to bake the potatoes, and since I don't get home until 6:00 I want something a little faster!
I'm just curious if anyone thinks that cutting up and boiling potatoes would make any difference in the soup recipe? I'm not an expert cook :). Thanks!
Answer: It should be fine. I have done it several times...(but I have also cut up the potatoes and then baked them on a higher temperature too)....
Question: Can red potatoes be used to make mashed potatoes? We have some red potatoes in the house that are left over from making potato salad. I want to make homemade mashed potatoes, but have only used regular white potatoes in the past. Will red potatoes work too, or should I just buy a bag of regular potatoes?
Answer: I'd go with white. Red potatoes will work in a pinch, but they'll turn out gooey. You can mix them in, though.
Or cut them into pieces, microwave them, and serve them as a side dish.
Question: How do you get potatoes to not turn brown after you slice them? I want to make scalloped potatoes from scratch in my crock pot for a pot luck get together, but everytime I have tried...my potatoes turn brown and they look so disgusting and I throw them out! If anyone has a great cheesy scalloped potatoes recipe, please share, but also please tell me what to do so that my potatoes don't turn brown!!! I am really wanting to make them from scratch instead of from a box this time. I'd like to take all the credit myself ;-) and feel good knowing I accomplished it!!
Thank you!!!
Answer: Try this, I Hope it helps!
CROCK POT SCALLOPED POTATOES
12 med. potatoes
1/4 c. chopped onion
1 c. sour cream
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 c. shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
Peel and chop or slice potatoes. Cook in water to cover for 3 minutes; drain. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Spoon into crock pot. Cook on high 3 hours. 10 servings.
Question: Can you use red potatoes for twice baked potatoes? I want to make twice baked potatoes, but all the recipes I find use russet potatoes. I prefer red potatoes, can these be used instead?
Answer: Technically you could, but they're usually too small for that.
If you want a great potato, NOTHING beats Yukon Gold yellow tatters. They're the meatiest and most flavorful.
Question: How can I keep potatoes longer from sprouting? Every year I grow potatoes in my garden. I store them in my basement but by spring they start to sprot. I don't mine the ones I'm going to use as seed potatoes to sprot. But the ones I keep for eating I don't want them to sprot. If they don't sprot they will last longer. The potatoes you buy in the stores don't sprot too fast. What can I do?Do you spray them with some kind of cemical or some thing. I hear that you can put apples with them and they will not sprot.I don't want my eating potatoes to sport because they become soft and after so long they turn black inside.
The ones that had turned green are the ones exposed to the sun. They were not covered with enough dirt. I know that the green part is poisonous but you would have to eat a lot of green potatoes to hurt you. Did you know they sell the green ones in the stores as green potatoes. What's up with that?
I do keep them in a cool, dark place. Thank you.
Answer: Keep in a cool, dry dark place. And don't eat if they're turning green! That part is poisonous (solanine).
Question: I want to grow organic potatoes in a container garden? All of the books I have read, say that you MUST use certified seed potatoes. Is there any reason I shouldn't seed out some of the organic fingerling potatoes I already have? I can understand not using regular storebought potatoes, but shouldn't organic be okay? Same question about sweet potatoes. Any tips or advice will be appreciated!
Answer: If you are going to re sell them you probably need the certified seed potatoes....If not....I cut up the grocery store variety...and I don't use pesticides...so they are organic...cept from the eye of the potatoe it starts with...but after that all the growth is organic.
