Acidophilus
Question: acidophilus? I am taking medications for blood pressure, thyroid, and various other meds.for osteoarthritis pain.I have heard acidophilus is good for digestion and other problems. Is it okay to take it?
Answer: I am sorry that you suffer from osteoarthritis pain. It can be a terrible suffering.
Acidophillus is a safe, natural way to get "good bacteria" or "pro-biotics" in your system. There are very little drug interactions.
The only thing you may want to do is make sure that if you take antibiotics, to take them an hour before or after the acidohpillus, not together. You'd have WW III in your stomach (although you wouldn't feel sick or anything).
I take them everyday, and it gives you consistency, and protects against loose stools.
God Bless you,
Chris
Question: What kind of acidophilus should I take for thrush? I'm breastfeeding, and think I might have thrush. I don't have all the symptoms, but my nipples really hurt when I nurse. I don't have shooting pain in my breasts, and the pain doesn't last once I stop nursing. But when I nurse it feels like baby has razors in her mouth. I feel great relief when I stop.
I don't think it's improper latch. She's 9months , so I think by now she knows how to latch properly.
I thought of using gentian violet and acidophilus. Is it okay to take lactobacilus acidophilus if you can't drink milk? If not what else can I take?
And also, can I use gentian violet? Will it stain my baby's teeth?
Answer: If you are lactose intolerant, lactobacillus acidophillus is very good for you, as it helps to break down lactose (milk sugars) by producing the enzyme lactase, which lactose intolerant individuals do not produce.
Have a look at this link for lactobacillus acidophillus.

Question: Can acidophilus pills used for the digestive tract good to reduce vagina oders? I have been taking acidophilus for 3 days and noticed a reduced oder down there when I touch the gina area. Though it says for digestive system, can I continue to use it for my area down there.
I swallow the pills not insert them in my woman-hood.
Answer: Acidophilus is good for your entire body. Yes, it is advertised for the digestive system, but when your digestive system is working properly, it is beneficial to the body. You want all of the waste to be out of your body so that it can function properly. The acidophilus is simply putting good bacteria, that helps to break down waste, back into your body. When your body is 'cleaner' on the inside the whole body is rewarded.
There is no danger to taking these pills for longer periods of time.
Question: how much acidophilus is there in a cup of yogurt? I sometimes take an acidophilus suppliment, and it is usually 2 billion active cultures. How does this compare to eating a cup of yogurt?
Answer: hey there...
it took me a while to look up your answer, and i came up with some results that may interest you. if they dont, sorry, but hopefully they will. heres what i could stir up:
lots of acidophilus can be found in milk, dairy, fish, grain and meat...this covers a lot of food groups, so unless you are vegetarian then you dont really have a lot to worry about.
in yoghurt, there are two co-cultered latic acid bacteria, that help for health and taste. i also read that it makes up 15% of the yoghurt, but it wasnt a very reliable source. since you need milk to make yoghurt, and milk has a lot of it, then there is proberbly enough that you do not need to take suppliments. for health reasons tho, i dont think it would hurt to continue.
hope this helps!
good luck!
Question: Acidophilus - How many units are beneficial for yeast control? Does anyone at all know what Acidophilus I should get that might help a dog with chronic yeast infections? We have exhausted all other vet treatments and feel as though we threw our $$ away. All the products I see online have certain amount of units of the bacteria and I don't know what would be effective and not effective. Some are 1 million units, others are 6 million units etc. HELP!
Answer: I love using acidophilus with my dogs. Even though they get top-of-the-line food, since they are older, they are prone to digestive problems and not being able to assimilate food well. I have found that acidophilus helps tremendously.
Most of the brands in the health food store are in the mega-units, specific to human adults. Since my dogs are small, I use the liquid drops and capsules that are designed for babies and children. You didn't mention how big your dog was but, like humans, you can go by body weight. I think your best bet is to find a holistic vet (even online - Dr. Marty Goldstein in New York) to ask as well.
The article in the source section will give you an idea how to deal nutritionally with pet yeast infections and the use of pro-biotics, as well as including a couple of yummy recipes to help your dog get well.
Good luck and all the best!
Question: Where can I get Acidophilus milk and what kind of grains is acidophilus found in? I was just wondering what stores sell Acidophilus milk and what grains acidophilus is found in since I read an article on wiki that stated that acidophilus was found in grains.
Answer: as far as I know Acidophilus doesn't come in a milk form and isn't in grains. You can get Acidophilus capsules that seperate to give you a powder that you can mix in to milk, coffee, tea, yogart or anything else you feel like mixing it in to. Also yogart has Acidophilus in it. You should take Acidophilus regularly to keep your system in properly working order.
Question: Does taking Acidophilus (probiotics) with antibiotics really work for reduced nausea? Been the antibiotics for a few days & am suffering with nausea. I have until next Thurs, when the course is finished, i was recommended Acidophilus & wondered if any of u good people had tried & tested.
Answer: hiya- i take Acidophilus for the same reason and i find it helps with bloating, and the longer you take the tablets for, they will have an effect. i have found after a few days though the nausea goes away as the antibiotics start fighting the infection. stick with it and drink plenty of water. good luck!
Question: Can I use Probiotic Formula Acidophilus for yeast infection? I bought Spring Valley brand from walmart of Acidophilus pills. Can I take them orally and insert them inside of me for yeast infection of vagina and them help vaginally and for my butt yeast infection? What's the difference between what I have and Lactobacillus acidophilus vaginal suppositories? Are mine just as good?
I can't afford anti-biotics, no insurance. Doctor here charges $100 co-pay. Rather use home remedies due to money.
Answer: Antifungals are used because yeasts and molds are fungi. It's simple to take an oral probiotic because it works systemically but sometimes more that that is needed.
The difference between what you have and the suppository form is this: As I'd mentioned above, the oral form works systemically, throughout your entire system. Vaginal suppositories work topically, but only where they are used. (If I had a rash on my hand and arm and used a cream only on my hand, I'd still have a rash on my arm. Understand? Topicals work only where they're applied)
I suggest you use the Monistat 1-Day treatment for the vaginal candidiasis, a topical antifungal cream or ointment for your rectal candidiasis, and use the probiotic as directed for systemical removal of the Candida. Practice very good hygiene and be sure to wash your hands BEFORE & AFTER inserting the vaginal suppository as well as BEFORE & AFTER applying an antifungal to your rectal area. Look at your diet. Perhaps there are foods you eat a lot of that foster Candidal over growth -- potatoes, yams, aged cheeses, alcohol, fruit, chocolate, nuts, sugar and vinegar -- omit some, cut back on others. Instead include foods that discourage growth -- onions, cabbage, raw garlic, turnips, kale, and broccoli.
Question: How much acidophilus can you take per day? I take a tablet of probiotic acidophilus every day, but would it make me sick if I took two tablets?
Answer: When taking acidophilus, the dosage usually refers to the number of live bacteria. Most sources suggest one to 10 billion bacteria as a recommended dose. This amount is available in tablets, capsules, and powder form. Average dosage suggestions vary from one to 3 times per day. However, some scientists warn that the concentration of the bacteria in the supplements varies widely from one manufacturer to another. Yogurt with "live cultures" and milk with L. acidophilus added to it are other sources.
Question: For how long will acidophilus survive outside of the refrigerator? Hey everyone, I'm supposed to take acidophilus but it's very inconvenient since I'm always on the go. I'm wondering whether I can carry it in my purse for a few hours.
Answer: It can vary from brand to brand. There are some that are designed so that they don't have to stay in the fridge. To find out which ones try contacting a local health food store as well to see what they say.
Question: Cures for BV suggest using a hydrogen peroxide douche with acidophilus tablets. How do I do this? I'm just wondering what kind of form to purchase the hydrogen peroxide whether its the liquid or powder form? Also how to douche with it, do I buy some kind of bag? Any suggestions on where to get the acidophilus tablets? I've had this BV problem for about 8 years and I've tried a lot of solutions which have all failed to cure it. Help!
Answer: Just the regular 3% liquid you get at the grocery works. Just get yourself some of those nature's way douche bottles and dump them out. As they're only 3 dollars to begin with you can simply make sure you wash them really well and reuse them. I hear you should do it for 7 days but this creeps me out a little so I am only going to do it for 4. I just filled the bottle with 1/2 3% peroxide and 1/2 plain water. I used tap water because that's all I had but you could use distilled if you're worried about whatever is in the tap water.
I've been dealing with this little BV gem for...I don't even know how long. Probably 4-5 years before I got a diagnosis? I used acidophilus inserts(didn't do squat) and metrogel(made me queasy) AND rephresh(left me white clumpy and cheesy) to no avail. The hydrogen peroxide douche WORKS. I've only used it once so far, but instead of white and pasty I have clear and stretchy like I remember it being when I was a teenager. You can get the tablets at super supplements or basically any drug store, but I think the best option is to look for vaginal acidophilus inserts. You can find these readily on the internet. I really hope this works for you. This infection is a PLAGUE on HUMANITY.
Question: Can acidophilus capsules be placed in the Vagina for a yeast infection? I heard by orally taking acidophilus 2 times daily it can cure a yeaste infection and vaginal bacterial infection. But I also heard inserting acidophilus capsules, it also does the same job but better. Does acidophilus really work as people say?
Answer: Taking acidophilus helps replenish the good bacteria so you get back into balance. I wouldn't necessarily try it topically, in the vagina to battle yeast, though it probably wouldn't hurt.
A good way to battle vaginal yeast is to use a grapefruit seed extract douche - (grapeFRUIT not grape, common mistake) Use liquid GSE, 10 drops to 6 oz of water. Use it as any other douche. Depending on the severity, you may want to wait several hours and douche again, or you may get instant relief. If bad, to start, I may do twice a day, but cut back to 1 per day as yeast problem diminishes. When gone, stop all together.
Adding probiotics to your diet, as well as enzymes will help keep your bacteria in balance and yeast at bay.
A good source for probiotics, enzymes and GSE is http://www.iherb.com (not affiliated, just where I get mine). They are cheaper than health food stores and have very good service.
EDIT: If taking GSE internally for yeast, take it 2 hours away from any probiotics as it will kill good and bad bacteria, not just bad.

Question: Can I take Acidophilus daily for extended periods? I take Acidophilus tablets twice per day. I have been taking them daily since January. Is it okay to take them daily, or do I have to take a break and stop taking them? Thanks!
Answer: This is a natural biotic --- while you should vary everything --- this will not hurt,
Question: I was just prescribed the antibiotic Metronidazole for BV. Is it ok to take Acidophilus? I normally take Acidophilus daily but have heard that it can cancel out the bacteria that the Metronidazole is trying to get rid of. Should I stop taking it until I am finished with the 7 days of antibiotics?
Answer: wow you got a nasty bacteria in you if you are taking Metronidazole. It's really strong, so I would avoid taking anything else until you finish the Metronidazole.
Question: How much of acidophilus would you need to get the beneficial effects? acidophilus gives good/ positive effects.. but how much of them do we need to get the good/ beneficial effects?
thank you very much for helping!!
Answer: Drinking several glasses of acidophilus bifidus milk each week is enough. Heck it cures a yeast infection within 2 days.
I would avoid the pill form of acidophilus as it's more expensive and the milk provides other nutrients like calcium and vitamins A and D.
Question: Can I take Lactobacillus acidophilus and evening primrose at the same time with my prescriptions? I take Pentasa and Azathioprine for my Chron's Disease, but I want to take acidophilus and evening primrose as well to help in a more natural way and eventually to not take prescriptions at all. Can I take all these pills at the same time or will it cause a bad reaction?
Answer: Both of these should not be a problem to take with your medication - you should definitely monitor your intake of the primrose oil as too much can cause abdominal pain or headache. See below for info
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/evening-primrose-oil/NS_patient-Primrose
Although as mentioned previously you should speak to someone educated in the field RHNC/RNC/naturopath etc. to help you get on a program to help you with the Chron's disease naturally. A pharmacist may/may not be able to answer your question correctly; pharmacists go to school to learn about drugs not nutritional supplements.
