Answer: Hi purplepansy. Cute 'name'. Amino acid imbalances are common and can cause significant health problems. Getting tested, therefore, may be a very good idea. Unfortunately, because I am not aware of the saliva test your doctor is recommending, I can't give you any advice on that. Ask your doctor this question. I am sure he/she will be happy to answer your concerns and provide you with documentation about the test's accuracy, reliability, etc. If you are really in doubt, have BOTH tests done. Serum amino acid profiles are valid and would provide a good comparison for the saliva test. If the results are similar, then you can do future/followup testing with the saliva method. They're termed acidic and basic based on what they were before they went into solution. Generally when you see them with their charges, they are showing you the structures at a neutral pH of 7.0. Under those conditions, the acidic amino acids have already given up a proton to solution, while the basic amino acids have taken up a proton. That's why the acidic amino acid has a negative charge and the basic amino acid has a positive charge.
