Anemia Treatments
Question: Looking for holistic treatments for non-regenerative anemia from feline leukemia?
Answer: You can start by upgrading his food! Get the best for your cat. I would also start making him eat as much fruit as he could, even vitamin c pills, you need to boost his immune system so he can fight off what is wrong internally! Make sure he gets alot of sleep and be as friendly as you can to him.
There is alot of research into the efficiency of vitamin C in cancer patients. There is also alot of research into putting the patients into a better mood, and well being to help fight off whats wrong from the inside, they say a smile makes all the difference.
So be good to your cat and get alot of vitamin c in him.
Question: other treatments for anemia besides iron pills? I've always been sickly and anemic..but lately I have been getting very tired and weak feeling..and depressed and what not from low blood sugar. I am taking iron pills for anemia..but they do not seem to be working. Last time I got my blood checked they said I was anemic but nothing else was wrong. I keep sleeping until 4 PM even if I go to bed early. I work at night time so I don't have an alarm, but this is not normal. Also, I am a bit out of balance and can't really stand up straight. haha...I don't know what my problem is, but any advice would be appreciated until I go to the doctors which might not be for a while....thank you
(always choose 10 points for best answer)

Question: what treatments are available for sickle cell anemia? basic health guides in combatting the disease is required

Question: What are the chances of blood transfusion being fatal for a dog with anemia? my dog was diagnosed with anemia
the vet says a transfusion will be fatal..i'm guessing she doesn't need it..but idk whether to believe him or not. we're starting treatment for it tomorrow and we have to bring her (my dog) in twice a day for shots with iron and vitamins..and to check her blood.
do you think her situation is fatal or will she be able to pull through? :(
Answer: Go back to your vet and ask him to clarify the situation. Transfusions should not be a fatal course of treatment. Perhaps they meant that a transfusion was not needed at this time?? I believe that transfusions are "reserved" for the more crucial cases. Hopefully a vet ot vet tech will chime in on this one.. Hope your dog gets better
Question: What is the chance of survivability for Sickle Cell Anemia patients? I am doing a project and need to know,,, I know some treatments exist and some do survive but what is the chance of surviving?? Like for chronic patients??
Answer: I am 41 with sickle cell anemia (Hemoglobin SS the worst form of sickle cell disease).
I know 2 people who are in their 80’s.
When I was growing up my mother was told I will not make it past 20.
Now the life expectancy is the mid 40’s.
Due to technology and new medications and a better awareness of sickle cell;
I believe the life expectancy for a person with sickle cell disease will also go even higher.
Now the negative side of having sickle cell disease;
Even though there are many forms of treatment for all kinds of aliments and new medications; there is nothing for the pain. Yes there are many forms of narcotics;
But
They just mask the pain (narcotics and other pain medications purpose is to block the signal to the brain that some part of the body is in some type of distress).
Some people with sickle cell disease cannot handle the pain and all they other symptom that come with this disease and they commit suicide.
Also if someone with sickle cell disease is to make it to their 30’s they have a better chance in living longer.
Question: What Cause anemia ? also what are the after effects when you have been receiving chemo therapy? I whoul like to know what causes anemia in a patient that has been receiving chemo therapy. Also ehat is the normal treatment and what are the after effects of all this
Answer: Anemia: Causes
RBCs are made in the bone marrow (a spongy, fatty tissue found inside larger bones). A hormone called erythropoietin, made in the kidneys, tells the body when to make more RBCs. Cancer and cancer treatment can cause anemia in the following ways:
>Some chemotherapy drugs can cause the bone marrow to malfunction, impairing its ability to make enough RBCs.
>Cancers that affect the bone marrow directly (including leukemia or lymphoma) or cancers that metastasize (spread) to the bone (such breast or lung cancers) can crowd normal bone marrow cells.
>Chemotherapy drugs containing platinum compounds (such as cisplatin [Platinol] and carboplatin [Paraplatin]) can injure the kidneys, lowering the production of erythropoietin.
>Radiation therapy to extensive areas of the body or to bones in the pelvis, legs, chest, or abdomen can damage the bone marrow.
>Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite can cause a deficiency in the nutrients needed to make RBCs, including iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid.
>Bleeding, as a result of surgery or a tumor causing internal bleeding, can cause anemia if RBCs are lost faster than they can be replaced.
>The body's immune system response to cancer cells can also cause anemia, called anemia of chronic disease.

Question: What do I have to do when I have Anemia? My Friend's child was recently diagnosed with anemia; he has a level of 9.6, so the doctor says.
He wants to know what kind of things he should do to bring the level down. Anything to this would be really helpful for this 3 yr. old.
I'm looking for treatments, meal plans, and exercise options.
Answer: For one, the level should go up, not down. Healthy range is between 11.5 and 14. Meals should include chicken, fish, or any other foods naturally containing healthy amounts of iron. Also, in a child this small, the possibility of iron poisoning still exists, which can be fatal. Try Pediasure, which has the recommended iron content.
Question: I just found out I have anemia, and I've been sick, I have to wait before discussing type. Why? I've been sick for awhile...skin rashes, trouble breathing, headaches, and exhaustion. I went to the dr last Saturday, and she ran some bloodwork. One that came back right away said I was anemic. However, she wanted me to go on antibiotics for a week before discussing the type and treatment of the anemia. I am wondering why? Additional info is I bruise easily, and I bleed a lot. Does anyone know what type I may have, and why I had to wait?
Answer: Three types of blood cells are formed in the bone: white, red and platlets. I think she wanted to be sure your white (infection fighting) count was OK first to be sure that the red blood cells (that measure anemia) were the only problem and that it was not a bone producing problem. So she gave you antibiotics. Platelets can cause bleeding and easy bruising but it seems that she was not as concerned with that as she did not mention it. If the white count is normal and so are the platelets she will focus on the red cells.
It is hard to say without breaking down the types of red cells in the lab.what type of anemia you have. She will probably start by repeating the labwork after the antibotics. She will start by looking at the MCV value ( just a lab marker) this will tell her where to start. Then she will look at your iron levels, B12 levels and others to see if you have a deficiency in these elements or another type of anemia. She will keep narrowing it down until she finds a cause.
If she found something very alarming she would most likey told you at the first visit.
The most common type for young girls is iron deficiency due to monthly blood loss which is corrected by taking iron tablets or vitamins with iron. but wait for her diagnosis before starting them or you'll mess up the result.
Red blood cells carry oxygen which your brain lungs and body need. That is why you are having trouble with breathing, headaches and exhaustion.
Question: Treatment for hereditary anemia? I am in my early 20s and I live a very healthy lifestyle with regards to food, exercise and managing stress.
One thing that has always plagued me is fatigue. It has been getting worse, to the point where when I am driving home at 5 PM, I can barely keep my eyes open and usually cannot keep driving unless I use caffeine or another stimulant.
When I was born, the doctor said I (might be?) anemic. A few years ago another doctor saw the results of my blood test and asked me if I was anemic. He said my blood cell shape might be long instead of round.
I am going to get a full evaluation of my blood, but what can I expect? What type of anemia could I possibly have? What treatments are available?
Answer: What is your racial group?. Is there any one else in family with history of anaemia-especially on male side(ruling out ordinary female anaemias)
Certain types of anaemia are more common in certain racial groups.
as a guidline -not definitive e.g.
negroid -sickle cell disease/trait-if present probably trait.
Mediterranean -thalassaemia
there are obviously many other different types of anaemia but your tests will sort it out for you

Question: Need some help!!Urgent(Treatment for anemia+diabetes) patient...? My grandma has diabetes about 20years something, so she need to take a lot of medicine to control the disease. Last month, she went to see the doctor, then the doctor told her, because she took a lot of medicine for a long period, so she got kidney problem...
But today, the doctor told my grandma, she got anemia...But my grandma cannot take a lot of medicine anymore, so suggest me few "natural" treatments that can increase her red blood cell???
I need suitable foods or drinks with no sugar (Just like i said, my grandma has diabetes)& NO medicine..
Thanks...
Maybe she can has some pill that gain more red blood as long as it does not hurt her kidney...
Answer: She can eat green leafy veggies, berries, chicken, things like that.
Without knowing the kidney problem, it's hard to suggest much.
Spinach has a lot of iron in it.
She can drink English Breakfast Tea (has no caffeine in it), crystal light, caffeine free diet soft drinks, milk.
Liver has a lot of iron in it, but may exacerbate kidney problems due to the protein.
I have diabetes and no meds either. I just carefully watch what I eat, and when I eat bad things, it's in small controlled portions so I don't spike too much.
She can even eat a little sugar free chocolate in moderation.
Can she take iron pills?
5 ounces of dry red wine can help a lot too!
Question: Hemolytic anemia survivors & victims? I asked this a while back but got no response. Has anyone else had a dog that survived immune mediated hemolytic anemia? What treatments did your vet use, and did your dog require transfusions? Just curious, my Dingo is a 3 year survivor, treatment 2 blood transfusions, 1 oxyglobin transfusion, prednisolone, azithioprene, cephalexin, too many tets and cbcs to count. It took 8 months to return her to health with no abnormal RBCs. Also cost 8 grand. (well worth it) Any information on your situation is appreciated.
Answer: My now 14-year old border collie, Dudley, contracted auto-immune hemolytic anemia almost 4 years ago. I was out of town on business so it was lucky that my husband noticed the sudden and drastic changes in his behaviour and activity level. Also luckily, our vet had recently dealt with this disease so was familiar with the symptoms and immediately knew the tests that needed to be done to confirm her diagnosis. We were fortunate that he responded to large doses of prednisone and other IV meds and saw improvement within a few days. Sorry, I can't recall the names of the others. He continued on prednisone for about 10 weeks and it took about 4 months for him to get back to his old self although his energy level was never quite the same after that.
About 18 months after the first incident, we started seeing the same symptoms again so immediately took him to our vet. Although he didn't appear to be as sick as he was the first time, his white count was significantly lower and we discovered his life was at great risk already. She started him on prednisone but he did not respond, then she put him on a drug that is commonly used for chemotherapy to try to suppress his immune system. He continued to get sicker. After 5 days, she was afraid he wasn't going to survive more than a few days so she told us his only hope was to receive a blood transfusion, although she felt his chance of survival was very slight. Our whole family said our tearful good-byes to him as she hadn't given us much hope that this would work. Much to our amazement his white count started to improve. Each day he improved a little bit more. I'm happy to report that more than 2 years after the second attack, our Dudley is still with us -- as healthy and happy as a 14-year-old BC can be. We are so grateful to have him and look at every day he's with us as a true blessing.
Dudley is the only dog our vet has treated that has survived a 2nd bout of this horrible disease. At the clinic they call him "Dudley the Miracle Dog". Each round of complete treatment cost us about $3,500, also well worth it.
I wish we knew what caused it. Our vet feels there's a high probability he may contract it again. Every day we check him over to see if there are any early symptoms -- so far, so good.
We live in Calgary, AB (Canada); where are you?
Question: natural anemia treatment? I am chosing to go vegan but I am anemic and worried because red meat usually helps them and when i dont eat it they are worse and more frequent.....any suggestions???
Answer: I suggest taking Shaklee's Iron Plus C Complex. Iron is a structural component of the hemoglobin found in blood, which delivers oxygen from the lungs to other body tissues. Without it, anemia - caused by iron deficiency, can lead to fatigue impaired concentration, and compromised immune function. Over 90% of ladies ages 12 to 50 don't get the recommended daily amount. Shaklee adds vitamin C for better iron absorption.

Question: Can you buy iron supplements over the counter for anemia? Question: How to lose weight when you are trying to recover from severe anemia? i have breathless on daily activities. i m on a high iron diet and take iron tablets. now my pallor is going away, but i have take rest often and still continue treatment until my hemogloblin and irons stores are restored to normal. At the same time, i have to lose a lot of weight. My doctor says not to strain myself and take plenty of rest. Take time off work. I don't want to gain weight.
I don't want to risk of getting heart problems as a complication of anemia.
Answer: Dietary control and exercise. It’s true what they say – all you need to do is watch what you eat, and expend more energy than you consume. It’s really that simple. You can quit reading this list now, you now know everything you need to know and didn’t need to fork over $500 for the privilege of me telling you the secret of losing weight. You don’t need to read a 4,000 page book, you don’t have to buy a tape series, you don’t need to stay up late at night to watch infomercials to understand this basic premise. It’s 100% true.
