Anti-oxidants
Question: Does boiling water kill the anti-oxidants in white tea? I'm only drinking it for the health benefits, I'm not too keen on the flavour. I've read a lot about how boiling water kills the anti oxidants and how certain minerals in tap water 'bind' the anti oxidants. Is this true? How can I get the most anti oxidants and health benefits from white tea?
Thanks - but I really don't care if its bitter, I'm not drinking it for the taste anyway, just the supposed health benefits.
Answer: Boiling the water won't cause any problem, but pouring boiling water over white or green teas will burn the tea leaves and could destroy not only any flavor but may damage some healthy compounds. The water should be around 170F.
I like white tea, especially with a tsp of buckwheat honey. If you're drinking something for your health, you might as well try to prepare it properly so there's a chance you'll enjoy it.
I like a lot of things that are good for my (tea, coffee, extra dark chocolate, cranberries), but I refuse to consume something I can't stand (weak/burnt tea, bad/stale coffee, sweetened fruit juices, Castor oil) just because they're supposed to be "good for me"
Question: Is it ok to have this dose of anti oxidants? Well see I'm drinking Centrum performance wich has anti oxidants of course and I just started drinking green tea. Is it ok to have this level of anti oxidants or is too much?

Question: How much anti-oxidants is too much in a given day (in gram or mg)? Green Tea has anti-oxidants. I'm not sure, if that is a lot or just enough or too low per day. The max. level I've come cross in green tea is close to 400mg for 500ml of green tea.
Is too much anti-oxidants bad?
Answer: There are diffrent kind of anti-oxidants. Antioxidants are intimately involved in the prevention of cellular damage -- the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases. The scientific community has begun to unveil some of the mysteries surrounding this topic, and the media has begun whetting our thirst for knowledge. Athletes have a keen interest because of health concerns and the prospect of enhanced performance and/or recovery from exercise. The purpose of this article is to serve as a beginners guide to what antioxidants are and to briefly review their role in exercise and general health. What follows is only the tip of the iceberg in this dynamic and interesting subject.

Question: Does Inorganic food healthy to eat even though it has anti-oxidants? Like, I've been wondering lately my mom was telling my small brother 'Eat Tomatoes they have anti-oxidants' and on my mind i was thinking what we eat mostly are Inorganic food containing chemicals, why should we eat food which has chemicals but has anti-oxidants? What's the use of it? Eat to get anti-oxidants, Eat to get chemicals.
Answer: well, foods, inorganic or organic, are going to have their vitamins and anti-oxidants. the chemicals just add, making it less healthy for your body to consume. it's like eating an inorganic chicken- you get the nutrients from the chicken, but you also get the unhealthy chemical hormones. these chemicals are causing weight problems, girls are hitting puberty at ages 6 because of the chemicals, and most of these chemicals are pesticides!
so, its best to get organic everything. it may be a bit more expensive, but if your very health conciese, it's best to buy organic!
stay healthy(:
hope this could help!
Question: How many different types of anti oxidants are there? What exactly is an anti oxidant?
Answer: an oxidant is something which will attach (stick on) half of an oxygen compund to cells in your body - this is not a good thing because it causes the cells to get damaged.
antioxidants clean up these things and so help to protect your body.
some i know are
SOD - superoxide dismutase
glutathione
Vit. E
Question: What are the list of Fruit Juices that are rich in fiber and anti-oxidants? Can somebody list me Fruit juices that are rich in fiber and/or anti-oxidants..
Answer: All fruit juices are rich in anti-oxidants. The amount of fiber in the fruit juice depends an how the juice company extracted the juice. Each company probably uses a different method. You have to look at the label for the fiber content.
If you juice at home, there are basically three different types of machines to choose from.
1) Masticating Machine - this machine runs and a low speed and leaves a lot of pulp and fiber in the juice.
2) Centrifugal Machine - this machine leaves no fiber or pulp in the juice.
3) Triturating Machine- this machine leaves some pulp and fiber in the juice.
Which ever of the three machines you use, your fruit and vegetable juice will be very high in antioxidants. Use organic produce. I have gone on many juice fasts where I drink nothing but vegetable and fruit juice for 7 days. Believe it or not, my vision becomes clearer and colors become more vivid every time on go on a fast. Buy a juicing book if you're interested.
Question: Orange juice and Cranberry etc are full of anti-oxidants and sugar is the sugar in cola the same? Are the carbohydrates in cola bad for you? If so are the carbohydrates, sugars in fruit juices from concentrates actually good for you and not like the sodas we consume on a mass scale?
Answer: Liquid sugar like in sodas & juices are the worst for you. The sugar is absorbed through the mucus membranes in your mouth directly into the blood stream. Refined sugar is an anti nutrient and will drain the body of vitamins & minerals.
Fructose is the most lipogenic (fat creating) carb. Fructose is found in fruits & high fructose corn syrup. Better to eat whole fruits, the fructose is at least encapsulated in fiber. You can get the same nutrition from vegetables without the added sugars.
The whole fruit is much better. Juice is quickly absorbed even in the mucous membranes in the mouth. All that fruit sugar (fructose) is dumped into the system at the same time spiking blood sugar & which can trigger an insulin spike that unbalances other hormones. Whole fruit takes a while to digest so it acts as an appetite suppressant. The juice is more fattening because you consume more calories drinking the juice than chewing the fruit. A glass of juice may encompass many more fruit than you would otherwise eat. When you juice you are discarding all the fiber and possibly some unknown benefits or enzymes still clinging to the fibers.
According to the video fructose is a major health problem, having fruit is not such a problem because fruit includes the "antidote" also - encapsulating fructose within the fiber. What you are doing is separating the fiber and releasing the fructose to make it more easily assimilated in the body. I'd suggest you watch the video and decide for yourself.

Eating the whole foods would be much healthier. Adding fat will make the vitamins & minerals in fruits & vegetables bioavailable so they can be incorporated into the body structure. Adding raw nuts would give you an additional nutrition boost with healthy fats.
from the article linked -
Another study done a few years ago at Ohio State University showed that salad dressing with oil brings out the best in a salad when compared to no-fat, low-fat dressings.
When the seven test subjects consumed salads with no-fat dressing, the absorption of carotenoids was negligible. When a reduced-fat dressing was used, the added fat led to a higher absorption of alpha and beta carotene and lycopene. But there was substantially more absorption of the healthful compounds when full-fat dressing was used.
Study researchers say they were not only surprised by how much more absorption occurred with fat added to the meal, but they were taken aback at how little the body absorbed when no fats were present. "The fact that so little was absorbed when no fat was there was just amazing to me," says Dr. Clinton.

Question: is it true that nescafe has more anti-oxidants than green tea? in the commercial, they say that nescafe has more anti-oxidants than green tea. but i don't believe what the commercial says.
Answer: It´s about a coffee called "NESCAFÉ Protect". It uses a special process that best preserves the antioxidants found in coffee beans. A cup of NESCAFÉ Protect contains three times more antioxidants than a cup of green tea!
Question: What are anti-oxidants and why are they good for your health(e.g. drinking green tea)? I've lived in Japan for almost a year, and instead of a morning cup of coffee I always have ocha (green tea). I've heard it said that green tea is high in anti-oxidants. I'm just wondering what that means and in what way it affects my health.
Answer: Antioxidants help in many ways....to prevent some of the visible effects of aging, our lifespan, and as a line of defense against certain illnesses and diseases.
Antioxidants are substances that reduce, neutralize, and prevent the damage done to the body by free radicals. Free radicals are simply electrons that are no longer attached to atoms. Instead of circling the nucleus of an atom (much like the earth circles the sun), free radicals are both free and radical enough to go careening through our cells, inflicting damage as they go.
Question: What is the strongest oxidant in North American diets? What do the anti-oxidants fight?
Isn't fluoride a stronger oxidant than oxygen or even ozone.
Answer: Antioxidants fight the free radicals in our bodies. with each and every breath you take you generate free radicals, the uncontrolled oxidants that damage cells. Antioxidants act as scavengers but with a twist. They are the soldiers that go in there and give up their lives to regenerate the mutated cells ~ free radicals ~ to give them health and vitality again.
Antioxidants will retard the ageing process;
Lower cholesterol levels;
Decrease risk of atherosclerosis;
Help protect against heart disease and stroke;
Reduce the risk of all types of cancer;
Help slow down progression of Alzheimer's disease;
Aid in supressing the growth of tumors;
Help the body detoxify carcinogens;
Protect eyes from macular degeneration, a disease that causes vision loss;
Aid in defending the body against damage from cigarette smoking;
Offer protection against environmental pollution.
The older you get, the less natural antioxidants your body produces to keep these destructive molecules in check. As they accumulate, health deteriorates and aging accelerates ~ leaving you more susceptible to everything from wrinkles to serious degenerative diseases.
The major vitamins that act as antioxidants are vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. The major mineral free ~ radical scavengers are selenium and zinc. These two enhance each other's effectiveness meaning that they are synergistic. zinc is another potent antioxidant ~ a potent fighter of the common cold by increasing the level of infection ~ fighting T cells and thus enhancing the immune system.
To increase the levels of antioxidants in your body simply eat more foods rich in these vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin A ~ fish liver oil, carrots, dark green and yellow vegies, eggs, milk and dairy products and yellow fruits.
Vitamin C - leafy and green vegies, citrus fruits such as lemons, limes and oranges, tomatoes and potatoes, red and green peppers.
Vitamin E - Wheat germ, soybeans, vegetable oils, nuts, brussels sprouts, leafy greens, spinach, enriched flour, whole wheat, whole grain cereals and eggs.
Selenium - Seafood, kidneys, liver, wheat germ, bran, tuna fish, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, garlic and brown rice.
Zinc - Meat, liver, seafood (especially oysters), wheat germ, brewer's yeast, pumpkin seeds, eggs and ground mustard.
Cheers♥
good health to you & yours♥

Question: Why would a neonate need so many anti-oxidants? The condition known as jaundice (yellow skin and eyes) is a result of a build-up of bilirubin and is usually a sign of liver malfunction. Newborn human infants often go through a period of fetal jaundice in which they turn yellow. This usually reflects not a liver malfunction, but rather the destruction of huge numbers of red blood cells. Why would newborns be cashing in so many red blood cells? In serious cases, neonates are often put under special lights that promote the breakdown of bilirubin. However, recent evidence demonstrates that bilirubin is a potent anti-oxidant.
Answer: When tissue is a deprived of oxygen and suddenly re-exposed to it (like during a heart attack), it produces many free radicals which are compounds that are chemically unbalanced and can cause damage to body tissues (in other words "oxidize" the body. Anti-oxidants bind these harmful molecules and render them harmless. This would be the case during birth when the infant only gets O2 through circulation.
Question: What are the external benefits of anti-oxidants? I know antioxdants has many benefits when it i drunks (from coffee) or etc. .....But does anyone know what it can be good of when it is applied externally,(like in soaps)....Would it be good for anything? :(
Answer: Clears Skin, Reduces Wrinkles, Helps lighten baggys under the eyes...Reduces rashes -exema and such- and even helps protect your skin from sunburn!! Awesome right?!
Question: What are oxidants? (from the word anti-oxidant)? Everyone always says you should eat or drink foods that contain a large amount of anti-oxidants. Okay fine but anti-oxidant foods get rid of these "oxidants" in your body, so what exactly do they do and how do they get into your body?
Answer: An oxidizing agent (also called an oxidant or oxidizer) is a chemical compound that readily transfers oxygen atoms .
Antioxidants are molecules that slow or prevent the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves. As a result, antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols or polyphenols.
Question: What do all those anti-oxidants have against our oxidants? I wasn't even aware of this ongoing battle between those little critters until a few years ago...
Answer: The anti-oxidants are there to keep the uncle-oxidants company and to make little cousin-oxidants.
Question: What exactly are anti-oxidants and how specifically do them help ones health?
Answer: Anti-oxidants prevent the oxidation of substances.
Oxidation is a chemical reaction within which an oxidising agent takes electrons form another species/ molecule. Oxygen can act as an oxidising gent, hence the name, but oxygen is not always involved.
Oxidation can lead to free radicals, extremely reactive molecules that will react with anything they come across, often creating other free radicals. This can cause damage to cells and is generally bad for you. So antioxidants stop this.
Hope this helps, Matt x
