Benefit Of Caffeine
Question: Energy drinks: caffeine benefit vs. calories? I drink wired 344 which has 344mg of caffeine, alot by any standard. I know caffeine has thermonegenic properties and can raise metabolism, however the total calories is 220. Do the calories offset the aid of caffeine or does the amount of caffeine end up neutralizing the callories AND provide benefit on top of that? No need for info about the neg. effects of large doses of caffeine, i am quite aware! And yes i eat healthy and excersise daily, so its not a lose a lot of weight aid, just a short term boost! Thank you!
The drink has 3000mg of taurine, 10mg of b6, 9.6mcg of b12, 20mg of niacin,
Answer: Certain energy drinks also restore certain things that your body needs after a lot of exercise (Rockstar being my favorite example of this; taurine is the supplement of interest).
Question: Why does some aspirin have caffeine? What is the benefit of the caffeine?
Answer: Caffeine dilates your blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more freely through the brain. For many kinds of headaches, the additional blood and oxygen relieves the headache symptoms.
Generally, caffeine is included in "headache formula" kinds of aspirin, like Excedrin.
Many people who suffer from migraines are prescribed pure caffeine to relieve their symptoms.
Question: Are there any Health Benefits from Caffeine? other than giving you a boost of short term energy, is there anything else?
Answer: It's a great way to control your appetite. Since my response caused such a negative reaction, I will be very serious with you! Caffeine's health benefits range from successfully helping to manage asthma to migrain headaches. It is used as a catalyst in certain medication (excederin) to assist in the treatment of headache and pain relief. According to WebMD..."Caffeine is also what helps in treating asthma and headaches. Though not widely publicized, a single dose of pain reliever such as Anacin or Excedrin contains up to 120 milligrams -- what's in a hefty mug o' Joe."
Just a little information for those who do not think caffeine has any health benefits.

Question: Did you know that Caffeine is of no benefit to your body? According to a recent study conducted at Bristol University(UK), caffeinated drinks have no benefit and do not bring about alertness.
In this study, 379 individuals were kept away from caffeine for 16 hours, and then given either a caffeine pill or a placebo. Those who were given the placebo and the caffeine pill reacted similarly, as their response was triggered by the craving for caffeine, rather than the drug itself.

The Red Bull/Energy drink argument does stand against the findings of this study.
Answer: 379 individuals is not a large enough sampling, it needs more study. Seems to me my red bull is keeping me at Y!A so I beg to differ.
Question: What are the benefits of giving up caffeine? I've recently given up caffeine (second day) and I was wondering what the long term benefits were. So far I've only registered a difficulty getting out of bed in the morning.
It might be interesting to hear about any detrimental results also!
Answer: Caffiene depletes your adrenal glands as it puts your body into constant stress/ fight or flight mode. Whilst you may feel initial energy from caffeine, in the long run you will feel depleted and fatiqued. When you are stressed your adrenals secrete high levels of cortisol. High Cortisol levels is linked to increased weight gain around the misdection which is one of the most unhealthy places to gain weight. Caffeine is dehydrating (note: bad skin, breath) it increases cholosterol levels, inhibits the absorbtion of many vitamins and minerals especially b vitamins and iron. Caffeine is a drug. It is very addictive. Congratulations on quiting. It will take a few weeks before you stop wanting to drink it but by then you should be feeling great. Try green tea instead.
Question: What are the benefits and detriments of drinking caffeine? Or more specifically, coffee? My boyfriend drinks both coffee and soda everyday. I know coffee has its health benefits, but I've read that too much caffeine can be dangerous. If it matters, my boyfriend has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and has a very fast heart rate, which I know can be increased by drinking caffeine. Any feedback is greatly appreciated:)
Answer: You can call it 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,... OR 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, but what we are really talking about is CAFFEINE. Caffeine may be the most popular drug in the world. We consume caffeine in coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, some soft drinks, and some drugs. The actual source of caffeine is the coffee bean, tea leaf, kola nut and cacao pod. Pure caffeine is odorless and has a bitter taste.Effects of Caffeine on the Nervous System
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. In moderate doses, caffeine can:
increase alertness
reduce fine motor coordination
cause insomnia
cause headaches, nervousness and dizziness
In massive doses, caffeine is lethal. A fatal dose of caffeine has been calculated to be more than 10 grams (about 170 mg/kg body weight) - this is the same as drinking 80 to 100 cups of coffee in rapid succession - not an easy thing to do.
Caffeine enters the bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine and can have its effects as soon as 15 minutes after it is consumed. Once in the body, caffeine will stay around for hours: it takes about 6 hours for one half of the caffeine to be eliminated.
Caffeine belongs to the xanthine chemical group. Adenosine is a naturally occurring xanthine in the brain that is used as a neurotransmitter at some synapses. One effect of caffeine is to interfere with adenosine at multiple sites in the brain including the reticular formation. Caffeine also acts at other sites in the body to increase heart rate, constrict blood vessels, relax air passages to improve breathing and allow some muscles to contract more easily.
Some studies show that caffeine causes physical dependence. One way to tell if someone "needs" that cup of coffee or bottle of Coke is to take it away from them and then see if they have any withdrawal symptoms. Typical withdrawal symptoms associated with caffeine are headache, fatigue and muscle pain. These symptoms can occur within 24 hours after the last dose of caffeine. One study has stated that the minimum consumption of caffeine for physical dependence is 4 cups of coffee per day. Other studies say that a few more cups of coffee are needed to develop dependence

Question: What are the health benefits of cutting back on caffeine? Not quitting cold turkey, but cutting back?
Answer: I thought a few times as to whether or not I should answer your question but here goes, I will.
My mother always drank coffee & tea. When she was about 45 +/- the doctor told her she must cut them out of her diet because of the caffeine. She always listened to her doctor. On her next visit the doctor enquired as to how she was managing. She told the doctor than she had changed to decaffeinated coffee & tea. The doctor told her that coffee was coffee & tea was tea. My mother stopped drinking the decaffeinated and went back to her regular coffee and tea. She was 88 when she died and was perfectly happy with her decision.

Question: Neti Pot. What if I use tea with salt in it instead of salt water? The caffeine in tea is a mild decongestant. So naturally, I thought of pouring it through my sinuses instead of using just water. The mucosal membranes would absorb some of the caffeine and aid in decongestion.
Is this a good idea? Are there other things in tea that may counter act the benefit of the caffeine?
Answer: Personally, I wouldn't. Yes, it may have decongestant properties when you drink it (which is not applying it directly to the sinuses to get it to work), but if you pour it through your sinuses, not all of the nutrients may be absorbed into the sinus cavity the way the saline can (which may leave a residue that can cause problems/irritation). If it's not 100% filtered properly, there is also a possibility of having a small chunk of the herb in the tea which may get caught or stuck in the sinus cavity (which can cause problems as well). Also, there's the acidity and the heat level of the tea that could potentially burn your sinuses if it's not just right. There are just so many reasons that I think it would be a bad idea.
I would use saline in the Neti Pot and drink the tea after or before it if you want those benefits. Good luck and I hope I helped!
