Question: What is the healthiest breakfast cereal that doesn't taste like cardboard? What is a good breakfast cereal that would be ideal for someone who wants to lose weight and control their calorie intake. I know there is Special K, but it taste like cardboard. I need some interesting suggestions guys. THANKS!
Answer: The top three most nutritious breakfast cereals are:
Fiber One (General Mills) - it's whole-grain, has 14 grams of fiber, 1 gram fat, no sugar (but does contain aspartame as a sweetener) and has 2 grams of protein. There are 120 calories per cup.
Shredded Wheat (Post) - I eat the 'old-fashioned big ones (80 cals/biscuit) but the frosted wheat are as nutritious with 185 cals./cup. This is nothing but whole-grain wheat with 1 gram fat, 0 sugar, 6 grams fiber and 5 of protein.
All-Bran Complete Wheat Flakes (Kellogg's) is another whole-grain with 0.5 fat grams, 5 grams of fiber, 5 grams sugar and 3 grams protein. The 'sugar' is both sugar and corn syrup.
Cheerios is in the top 10 cold breakfast cereals and there are times when nothing but Cheerios will do but I find them to be so full of air I end up eating 3 to 4 cups as my afternoon snack! This is also a whole grain with 2 grams of fat, 1 of sugar, 3 of fiber and 3 of protein.
Special K is among the least nutritious - it has too many additives, flavor enhancers and isn't a whole-grain plus has added multivitamins and Corn Flakes are for taste only..
A change from the above is plain oatmeal - add a dash of cinnamon and 1 TBsp. each of almonds and raisins.
The 'secret' to not having boring breakfast cereal is to top it with something good for you which tastes great. In my freezer, I keep a bag of frozen, unsweetened, blueberries, plus bags of strawberries and mixed berries which I semi-defrost before putting on my cereal (makes the milk an interesting color!). I, also, heat the cereal, with the milk and berries on it, (plus 2 tsp. sugar for my 'sugar fix') for about 30 secs. in the microwave.
If your full breakfast is based on cold cereal, you're missing many nutritional requirements for the number of calories. One cup of cereal averages about 120 calories - this, plus 1/2 cup of 1% milk comes to 'near' 175 calories so, for a growing teen, you need to have a better protein source plus fruit or fruit juice and additional calcium. Look into your bowl - does 1 cup of cereal look like a meal? You should add 6 oz. of Tropicana orange juice with Calcium & Vit. D plus a Light Yogurt to this, or 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese with 1/2 cup berries - (total 365 calories).
As cereal for breakfast every day is boring, you should plan to break your routine twice a week with scrambled eggs, using 2 eggs fork-beaten with 2 TB. lowfat (1%) milk and have this on a slice of Whole Wheat toast (Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat is very good & has 1 gm fat, 3 fiber + 4 protein per slice). After eggs are cooked, stir in 1/2 tsp. butter & use 1/2 tsp. for the corners of the toast. The calorie count in this is 160 for eggs & milk, 80 for toast + 35 for the butter (275). If you add a light yogurt, for calcium and protein, you have a well-rounded breakfast. Not counting the butter (of course!), this breakfast has 22 gms of protein (45% of your daily requirement), 3 of fiber, 20% of your daily requirement for calcium and 10 of fat - fat is, however, essential to good health. (Total = 375 cals).
The more boring your food, the more likely you'll not stick with a diet - once a week you should, probably, have 2 slices of microwaved bacon with a boiled egg on toast plus 4 oz. fruit juice and yogurt (380 cals).
Question: How to measure breakfast cereal in grams using a cup? Hi, can anybody tell me how to measure out breakfast cereal using a cup? I'm on a diet and hence count the calories I eat. Back in US, the carton contained all the calorie info for a cup of cereal so it was easy. Here in London it's in gms. That is, it says 30gms of, lets say, cheerios is 112 calories. How do I measure 30 gms with the cup? (I've a US cup, 1 cup = 8oz)
Answer: Your cup is a measurement of volume. Grams are a measurement by weight. So there's no "one size fits all" answer as to how many grams are in a cup, because it depends on what kind and brand of cereal you're measuring. Here's a chart with some common foods and their conversion for grams and cups:

.
EDITED: Here's a site that tells the calories in many dry cereals per cup or portion of cup. According to that, 30 g of Cherrios is 1 cup. They have a couple dozen or so other cereals listed there, too.

Question: Is it true that people who eat cereal for breakfast weigh less? Is it okay to stray from the norm and eat other foods for breakfast (like leftovers from dinner) instead of breakfast cereal? I mean, some people have never eaten cereal before (like in foreign countries) and they're healthy, right?
Answer: It's people who eat breakfast, period. It doesn't have to be cereal, it could be anything that is good for you.
Question: how to make cold breakfast cereal? The price of cold breakfast cereal is crazy high. Does any one have a good recipe for making breakfast flakes? Something cheap and easy? And tastes good?
Answer: I'm not sure if there is anyone else out there that does this, but it's worth a try! I love it, and my dad, who was Norweigan, introduced it to me. He said his parents used to eat it all of the time. Take regular saltine crackers, crunch them up, and use as you would a dry cereal. You'll be surprised at how good it tastes.
Question: Breakfast cereal contaminated with insects! Can i get compensation? I opened a box of breakfast cereal, the still clear plastic bag containing the muesli is still closed. To my horror I can see insects crawling inside. At least one moth, three caterpillars and one bug! Who should I complain to and should I claim for compensation, how to do it?
The cereal in question is "Dorset Cereals' not a cheap brand, quite expensive really, so I am very dissapointed with the quality and control checks. the isects are still alive inside the sealed bag!
I called the Quality control manager, he says everything they put in the cereal is natural! Says they will send me a letter and cheque!!! Lets see how much and if there is an apology and lets hope they do a search and check of there quality control, in house.
See my video evidence!

Answer: Contact them through their website. I complained about a tube of toothpaste because the seam in the tube split open after a few uses. They sent a letter explaining that it was a known problem and sent me a coupon for a free tube of toothpaste. I didn't have to send anything in. Chances are, your box is not the only one infested so they won't require you to send it back.
Complain here: http://www.dorsetcereals.co.uk/international/
And let them know you have the unopened bag with the insects still inside! Maybe contact the store in case it happened there because of being on the shelf too long.

Question: What is your favorite HEALTHY breakfast cereal? I am a big fan of eating cereal with skim milk for both breakfast and lunch when I am trying to diet. Usually I stick to Special K Red Berries or Special K Yogurt and Berries, but I am looking for some more variety! Anyone have a favorite?
Answer: I love Special K Vanilla Almond, or just plain old Rice Krispies. Both are low fat, with very little sugar :-)
Question: Is it disgusting to pour rewatered canned condensed skim milk on perfectly good breakfast cereal? I'm thinking of laying in a supply of canned condensed skim milk, but it would be good to know just how desperate you'd have to be to actually drink the stuff, even in an emergency, let alone use it on innocent unsuspecting breakfast cereal.
Oops, I meant evaporated milk. I always get them confused. I just looked again at the actual can.
Answer: It has been ages since I came anywhere near a can of condensed milk, but I think you'd be wise to experiment with one can before you buy a crate of the stuff. I have a dim recollection that I tried something similar to what you're suggesting many, many years ago, but the results were not wonderful.
I'm not sure if it's sold in the States, but in Europe something called UHT milk is fairly popular. The initials stand for Ultra Heat Treated. This stuff can remain in the carton on the shelf (no refrigeration required) for literally years without going bad. ...Well, without going any badder than it was to start!
Some people find the taste acceptable; I think it's not very nice at all, particularly the stuff that's not skimmed. The full-fat and semi-skimmed versions have a very peculiar taste due, I assume, to the presence of cooked fat in the milk.
Since condensed milk has also been heated to fairly high temperatures, I imagine there will be a similar taste present in it.
You need to find out if there is. Nobody else is going to be able to tell you if you can tolerate uncondensed milk or – who knows? – maybe even enjoy it more than fresh milk.
Question: How much is 30g of breakfast cereal? I'm talking particularly about fruit and fibre.
We don't have scales in the kitchen (not proper ones that can be used for cereal) and I'm just wondering how much 30 grams of breakfast cereal would be?
I mean, how many handfuls, or how much of a cup would it be?
Thanks.
Answer: 30 grams is 1/4 cup.
