Calcium Consumption
Question: Consumption Of Calcium in Milk? since doing a bit of research, ive been reading that drinking cow's milk is basically pointless for calcium intake, as you don't absorb it.
what are better substitutes? something in which we actually absorb the calcium?
im talking about a drink. i already eat plenty of broccoli & the such in which contains plenty of calcium.
thanks.
Answer: Calcium is found in nuts, especially almonds, and tofu has a significant amount of calcium- 100g tofu contains 300mg.
Calcium is a mineral that is harder to absorb than any other mineral, since it requires vitamin D for it's uptake into the body.
Dairy products are high in protein, too much protein causes calcium losses though the urea.
Try fortified orange juice, or fortified soya milks on your cereal every day. Broccoli is great for calcium, so keep it up. If you feel you are not getting enough dietary calcium, you may wish to consider supplementation, just to be on the safe side.
Question: Too much Coral calcium consumption? "I bought Coral calcium and in the beginning I used to take 1 spoon (provided in the box- 1gm =380mg of calcium carbonate) now I eat 4/5 spoons atleast twice aday. i have anemia and I love the taste of the coral calcium...it is like Pica...anyone knows if too much calcium carbonate consumption has deleterious effects? on the website it says they have people taking upto 16gms witout any problem...i make sure I drink good amount of water. the coral calcium is not from below sea water but harvested above the sea bed to avoid heavy metal contamination...all input is welcome
Answer: Constipation is possible. Anything in excess is not good for you. Too much calcium may be stored somewhere that isn't ideal.
Question: how can we consume calcium in a pill free manner wen we are told to cut down on choloesterol consumption? we are told to cut down on fat and cholesterol high foods!? but we still need to consume calcium! the biggest source of calcium is milk which is high in fat and cholesterol, i do not want to take other means of calcium so how do u do it? it is the same with nuts, hig in fat but contain omega 3 oil! just accept were all gona die and who cares how?
Answer: Eat spinach, spinach is high in Calcium and you can eat it in lots of ways, salads, soups, dips and so on.
Question: Is my constant soreness from being on my feet too long due to a lack of calcium ? Usually when I have a long day at work or play a game of basketball I wake up the next morning with extremely sore calves. I am only 22 so I figured the soreness is due to overproduction of lactic acid and was wondering if calcium consumption such as milk would help with this issue
Answer: I'd start with your shoes first. As a person who works on her feet all day I know the difference between good shoe day and bad shoe days. Now I could be wrong and that may not be your problem but I don't think there's anything wrong with increasing your calcium intake with milk or yogurt and check with your Dr.
Question: Will consumption of viagra increase calcium in the body? DOes it lead to calcium stones
Answer: u know that calcium is needed in quantities for signals from brain to all over the body , so it must be decreasing
Question: what health issues could arise from over consumption of calcium?
Answer: kidney stones, mainly.
it's hard to overdose on calcium because your kidneys normally excrete any excess, but if you managed to really ingest a lot of it and became hypercalcemic, you could develop tetany (muscle spasms) and cardiac dysrythmias (irregular heartbeats).
Question: is calcium chloride safe for consumption?
Answer: No, not safe for ingestion
Question: Could taking a calcium based antacid be decreasing my iron absorbency? Hi there, I read somewhere that calcium taken two hours from iron consumption decreases iron absorption, is this correct?
Answer: Hi,
Yes that is correct, any calcium (milk, youghurt, supplements) will interfere with iron absorption. If you're taking calcium based meds and iron supplements you need to make sure that you take them as far apart as you possibly can (not just 2 hours).
If you're not taking iron supplemetns then you're getting most of your iron from your main meal (dinner) so you should try and avoid taking your calcium based meds around your main meal.
Question: Trying to go vegan - how to make up for the lost calories and calcium? I'm currently lacto-ovo vegetarian, and would like to become vegan, but I don't want lose a lot of weight and be all skinny. If I just eliminate dairy fats - stop putting sour cream on my chili, leave the cheese off the veggie burger, etc. - then my daily caloric consumption will drop dramatically. What are some good calorie-dense vegan foods I can snack on to make up for the lost dairy? Also, where do vegans get calcium from, and how much of whatever that is do you have to eat every day to meet the requirements?
Answer: calcium-set tofu is packed full of calcuim, and some soya milks/yoghurts have it added. There is also calcium in many types of beans/seeds/nuts and a cup of dark green veg such as spinach has as much calcium as a cup of milk. The only things it's really hard to get on a balanced vegan diet ( i.e. including all colours of fruit/veg, various beans, pulses, nuts, seeds, grains etc) are iodene and B12. I get iodene from seaweed and B12 from a vegan yeast extract. I'm not underweight at all and other than nuts I don't consume anything high fat, but if you need extra calories, veg margarine has loads, just add it to anything you can, nuts are really high fat (and far better for you than margarine), hummous is quite high calorie I think, also potato fries, vegan chocolate, veggie pakora. Best of luck going vegan, check out vegansociety.com as well.
Question: What does calcium hardness, CO2, etc. have to do with water quality? What does calcium hardness, CO2, PH, nitrate, and phosphate have to do with water quality? Would you want these levels to be higher or lower if you wanted good water quality? What's a generally 'good' level of these for water?
Would your answers be different if we were discussing quality in terms of ecological standards or human consumption standards?
You don't have to answer every one of these questions, just a few answers will be well-appreciated. Thank you.
Answer: Calcium, hardness, CO2 are substances dissolved in water. Typically lower is better but with some considerations which I will discuss later. The EPA publishes a water quality standard which can be found here http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/criteria/drinking/dwstandards.pdf
A simple measurement of everything dissolved in water is TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) -- I'm guessing that might not include CO2 and 02 because they are gasses. Anyway, the maximum TDS the EPA allows for drinking water is 500ppm (or mg/l) Tap water is typically 200ppm TDS. However, just because water is 200ppm TDS doesn't make it good water for drinking. The levels of the individual substances become important. RO (Reverse Osmosis) can remove most of the dissolved solids. RO water would typically be around 20ppm TDS. Distilled water is theoretically 0ppm TDS but once water is purified to that point, it becomes "hungry" and will actually dissolve the pipes or container -- whatever it touches so typically distilled water has something dissolved in it because it has to be contained.... DI (DeIonized water) is distilled water that has been stored in a special inert plastic container with no exposure to air -- it is used in the semiconductor industry to wash parts. Drinking only that kind of water for any length of time could leach minerals out of your body. So water that is good for one purpose might not be good for another.
Typically water that is suitable for human consumption is ok for other organisms -- however, Chlorine and Florine can kill fish and beneficial bacteria, some animals are very sensitive to boron and copper. Animals and humans can survive on brackish water that has a TDS of about 10000ppm -- but only certain minerals can be tollerated (salt, calcium, etc. magnesium, sulphates and others cause digestive problems that will be overcome after using the water for some time).
Sea water is about 35000ppm TDS -- that is too salty for humans and most land animals to drink -- but it is a wonderful environment for fish and aquatic mammals.
Question: How can I get more calcium? I am a 19 year old male and I have small bones already. I have recently taken to consuming caffeine every day. I also determined that drinking too much milk (like a glass or more at a time) gave me stomach aches so I hardly drink milk ever.
How can I get more calcium to offset the loss from caffeine intake and lack of milk consumption?
Answer: You can try this:
Eat fish. Sardines with the bones and canned pink salmon with bones are excellent calcium sources.
Drink calcium-fortified soy milk or regular milk.
Drink calcium-fortified orange juice.
Good luck!
Question: Why is it that when i consume Omega3 i gain weight? I do not understand it. my guess is that it is similar to the effect i have when i consume vitamin D, resulting with gaining weight. I learned that Vitamin D and Calcium consumption together are affecting accumulation of Fat in the body so it has to be balanced. But what about Omega3, why does it happen with that too and in this case i gained weight in a way that my body became wider and i did not notice too much of extra fat being accumulated. As soon as i stopped i started to return to my normal proportions.
Answer: I really don`t understand why this would happen to you, I`ve been taking 1200 mg. of omega3 for 6 years and I`ve never had a problem with weight gain, maybe something else is causing it.
Question: How long till the consumption of greasy food affects acne? I ate pizza last night, loaded with cheese which is calcium and is bad for acne, also white bread too, how long does it usually take for a bad eating choice affects acne prone skin?
Answer: The time it takes will be different for everybody, mostly depending on your metabolism, digestion abilities, and overall health. I would say that you should be able to see a difference the next morning after a long sleep.
You should totally check out this article about how food is connected with acne. It is a little long to read, but you will certainly learn some useful information that you probably haven't seen before!

Question: Can I use tap water for my turtle? Also does anyone have tips for vitamin consumption? Right now I am using filtered brita water for my turtle. It is very time consuming and I don't even know if tap water is bad for them..
Also I purchased a calcium supplement that includes other vitamins. It's a powder and just washes off the food in the water (obviously). My turtle will not hand feed so I don't know how to get it in his mouth!
Answer: I have used tap water for many years and have never had problems. I have heard from multiple sources that it is not necessary to treat the water as you would with fish. As for vitamins, I give my turtles a variety of foods to ensure they get their vitamins. Crickets are easy, because you can gut load them by allowing them to eat things high in vitamins, such as collard greens, which are a good source of calcium, and then feed them to the turtles. I also feed mine minnows (not goldfish. they are unhealthy for turtles), worms, pellets, etc. Some of my turtles will eat various veggies such as romaine lettuce.
Question: How can we inspect the presence of calcium carbide in the fruits sold at market? Specially Mango these days are sweetened using this chemical which is very harmful for human consumption.
Answer: hey ....we have a same common name ...!!!!
also i have seen your question/answers in cricket section ....they are really good :)
now coming back to your question :
this things happens because As traders and retailers are under pressure to ensure a regular supply of fruits, much before their due time of arrival in the mandis (market), all kinds of unscrupulous methods are used to ripen fruits artificially. These include reactions with calcium carbide and other chemicals to make the appearance of fruit attractive.....
Though many techniques are employed to ripen mature fruits, the most commonly used agent is calcium carbide. It has carcinogenic properties and is used in gas welding for steel goods. This method is being used in most of the climacteric fruits (fruits which are picked when mature, and ripened only after they are picked) like mangoes and bananas.
how to detect this :If the fruit is uniformly well coloured, or if black blotches appear on the skin in two or three days, you could suspect chemical ripening......
What is being done to counter this adulteration? Nothing. True, but the horticulture and health authorities seem unconcerned over the extensive use of chemicals in fruits. While 78 per cent of the total horticulture produce in Himachal are apples, 23 per cent in Haryana are mangoes. In Punjab, mangoes are cultivated in Ropar and Hoshiarpur. Officials in Punjab Mandi Board say that about 120-150 tonnes of mangoes (from May-August) and about 200-250 tonnes of bananas (from August-December) and 50-60 tonnes (from December-February) arrive in the mandis of Punjab daily. In spite of this high consumption of fruits, and the obvious shift to horticulture as part of the crop-diversification plan, authorities have failed to devise any action plan to check malpractices in ripening.
so you have to take precautions on your own :-
1.Wash the fruits thoroughly before consuming. Keep these under running water for a few minutes, so that the chemicals are washed away.
2.Do not buy fruits when these arrive in the mandis (market) before the due period. You can be almost sure that they are artificially ripened for better marketing and earning profits.
3.While eating mangoes and apples, cut the fruit into pieces, rather than consuming directly.
4.What looks attractive outside may not be good for health. Fruits that have a uniform colour, for example, a bunch of bananas having a uniform colour, are more likely to have been artificially ripened.
