Dementia Diarrhea
Question: Which of the following is not among the common signs of pellagra? Diarrhea
Dementia
Dermatitis
Desiccation
Answer: pellagra is NOT associated with dessication
Question: How do I stop diarrhea? As a practical joke I slipped my grandma milk of magnesia and some stool softener a few days ago thinking it would only last a day but I think I fed her too much cause she is having constant diarrhea all over the place. All up and down the hallways to the bathroom there is poop every where also her bed and bathroom are a mess.
I don't think she knows whats going on since she has dementia and is 87 years old but she keeps complaining of stomach aches and thinks eating bran cereal is gonna help but I think it's just making it worse. I went over to visit her today and the place is still a mess cause her helper just quit and said she isn't paid enough to clean up the mess and her 8 cats. I don't wanna do it myself but I do wanna help my grandma with her diarrhea problem.
In short whats a good poop stopper?
Answer: Eat a couple pieces of the highly-processed American cheese slices (like the ones you make grilled cheese with). They're gross, but they usually do the trick.

Question: old dog with bloody diarrhea? all day today. the smell is SO BAD, I can smell it the second he goes. no vomiting, but I don't think he's eaten. also earlier today he walked right up to me, looked at me for a few seconds, then peed right in front of me. my mom is a nurse and said it didn't look like blood, but there was blood. bright red gooey blood. I know blood will cause this awful smell too. she said the red could have been something he ate, but I've been cleaning it up ALL day! I'm so mad right now that she won't listen to me. what should I do? I think if we took him to the vet, my mom will have him put to sleep. he has dementia and is very old, and as frustrating as it is (normally) to clean up after him, it hasn't been THIS bad
he doesn't seem to be suffering, which is what my mom keeps saying. she also said his stomach doesn't seem to hurt either and his gums look normal. the vet is closed and she said she wants to wait anyway. I'm just worried that he'll get worse if it is a virus instead of him just being old :-/
jill, that was funny. but you know dogs have legs, right?
Answer: Take what you have wiped up to your mom and make her look at it. She has got to know that blood in the stool is no good. We are all mammals and function roughly the same.
Also, the suggestion to call the vet and make your mom talk to them was a very good one.
Best of luck to you.
Question: 17 Year old mix Cocker Spaniel and terrier mix is having diarrhea problems.? Feeding him 1/2 can of Mighty Dog chicken dinner in gravy( for 15 years eat only people food--chicken breasts, 93% lean meats, and deer.) and a slice of white bread for each meal. Started having diarehia problems with processed foods and found this dog food after several months. Picky isn't the word!!! I think this problem was caused by me feeding him several pieces of Triscuits. What can I help do for him and me!!, as he hates and is ashamed going in the house.--one of the family-and is house broken very good???? Feel sorry for him and he is having accidents now for the 3rd day??? Other than this, has athritis and some dementia but is in better shape than I am. HELP!!!!
Answer: You need to start feeding him strictly lean meats and rice. The rice will help bind him up and stop the diarrhea. Just make sure he is getting enough fresh water too. Diarrhea increases the chances of dehydration.
Question: Alright wise guy, here's a tough one, can you handle it? lmao, I figured since i've pretty much got my answer for the quiz no need to continue doing useless paperwork heh.
Age- 47
Gender-Male
Family history-Adrenal disease, liver disease, eczema, tonsillitis, brain tumors, and family members have many times caught legionell
Symptoms-The patient has dementia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sore, red puffy throat, lethargy, severe joint-pain, and has just become comatose within the last 3 hours, and BPM is dropping a steady .2 BPM every half-hour.
This patients' doctor has treated him in the past for-
Tonsillitis, chlamydia, Lyme's disease, and gave medication for food poisening, all treatments administered a year or more beforehand.
Tips- The patient has many family members and they ridiculously requested the dog to come inside to visit him, in hopes.
You get 5 reasonable questions doc, you up for it? Muwhaahhaha!
Wrong. It is technically only one bacteria or virus.
Answer: its legionellas disease and lyme disease
and poisoning is spelled wrong.
Question: Sun Exposure (Long term/lack thereof) --effects? What would be any and all probably or possible effects of lack of sunlight exposure for an individual for a chronic period of time? Something along the range of 4-5 years.
It is well documented we need sun exposure to function,.. so I am interested to know what a complete lack of it over half a decade would cause in a person?
(Yes, they would be pale!) ... I'm speaking medically.
Would their eyes become sensitive to light?
Would bones weaken?
Perhaps the triple D's of some degree -- Dermatitis , Dementia (memory problems/brain fog), and Diarrhea. (Of course doubtful to develop rickets with modern diet.. but some levels of the vitamin D deficiency sounds likely).
Use your imaginations, and knowledge you already have!
I would like an exhaustive list if possible,.. I am working on idea/thesis for modern society.
Thank you!
Answer: Well, we need sunlight to initiate Vitamin D release in the body. Vitamin D is related to many bodily processes such as mood and bone growth/stabilization. So a lack of sunlight would create a moody, fractured society...
Question: Are these illnesses or symptoms??? These are NOT Illnesses, but only symptoms that you must learn to ask yourself—“from which of the five causes does it come from???”
These are the symptoms that were once known as real illnesses; that YOU can now learn to reverse or prevent, and/or improved by yourself with my self-healing methods.
There are two words that will make this possible to do or impossible to do:
These two words have a magic all their own –they are magical because they remind me of “Open Sesame” --- once you use these words they open a new life for you if you apply them or close the door to it, they are called: Discipline and Dedication. With out these magical words nothing is possible—I will give you the path to a new life, but you must walk it and never get off of it -- until the day that your real cause-point is found and eliminated.

Question: grossest thing you've seen? what's the grossest thing you've seen? in detail. me... I worked at the nursing home as a CNA. there was this lady w/ bad alzhiemers/dementia. I woke her up, checked her, and she was clean. we took her to breakfast. brought her back. checked her again and she was dirty. she had diarrhea. bad diarrhea. i turned around, put gloves on, turned back around and she had it on her fingers. the then began (AHEM) "pleasuring" herself w/ dirty fingers. I had to clean it out. took 2 of us about 15 minutes and an entire container of wetones. don't report me for a bad question please! still gives me nightmares...

Question: Is something wrong here or am i over thinking this??? Any caregivers read...? I am a caregiver and just moved from working in a senior facility for a year to an adult foster care home with 4 senior residents. we have a new resident who i do not yet know very well.. this is my 2nd day with her... she has lived here about a week. Today (all day) she has had NON STOP diarrhea and it is really snot-like and runny (sorry guys) she is eating less than 20% of her meals and is not complaining of any stomach cramps or anything, she is a dementia patient. All her vitals are normal. I am now feeling very wheezy and weak to my stomach. i don't know if it is from cleaning her up or if i am catching something. it reminds me a noro virus. although a co worker i called said since there is no temp not to worry, and i understand that.... but this continuous diarrhea is making me question... its been going on for close to 24 hours now. ideas???
Answer: make an appt with her doc;; make sure she's getting electrolytes;; could be C-diff, temp or not...you should be using gloves anyway;; with her having dementia, you truly can't rely on their pain response;; & if she's new, that could be also contributing to her 'not eating' (depression)..set up a doc appt..
Question: How can I avoid having a breakdown? I am at my wits end...? Over the summer, I lost my mom to Cancer. I got married a month later ( was supposed to happen 2 days after mom passed but we put it off ) and then had some family issues. Now, I am dealing with my father's deteriorating memory ( early stages of dementia caused by drinking ). We moved in with my father to help him around the house, but never expected this.
Everyday I have to go over the same things with him ( why he can't go to work, what dr apts he has, what we are having for dinner etc.... ) every day. Yesterday he called me up 37 times to ask me what is going on with work.
I am to the point now where I am so stressed out that I am sick. I get really bad stomach cramps, then diarrhea, then a headache. Often times I feel like I am gonna throw up. On top of all that, I have bad anxiety/panic attacks and am clinically depressed.
I feel like I am gonna have a nervous breakdown if something doesn't give soon.
Any ideas or tips how to relieve some of this stress?
I have an apt with my Dr today, just not sure what to say.
Thanks!
Answer: Well, from my own experiences:
Most of the physical symptoms, stomach cramps etc come from the effects of not looking after yourself properly. Being depressed adds to the downward spiral but if you take a look in the mirror i am sure you yourself will see that you have not taken care of yourself as much as you might of if you were not ill. The important thing to remember is that depression is a mental issue, not physical, your brain may influence the way you look after your body but that's not to say you have lost all reasoning up there to sort out a lot of it yourself. Routine helped me, helped me more than any drug or counselling ever could. Waking at a reasonable hour, taking at least a 40 minute walk every day. Lose the fatty food and get some vitamins inside you etc.
As for the mental side of things, sometimes the brain just can't deal with some things. (you can't deal with them) but it's easy to claim the victim card and seek some drugs from the doctor. One thing i noticed with a lot of depressed people is that they seem to have a very much weakened self identity of who they are in the world. Maybe losing your mother and much of your father has greatly hurt that little place in the world you have been used to for some time. Whatever the case, the doctor will be able to help. You are probably not the first or the last to feel like that. The the feeling that something needs to break might not be far from the truth, have you actually broke down at all over the whole thing? if you haven't then much of the answer lies in that alone. Grieving is just part of our make-up.
Whatever it is you need to speak with a doctor, sometimes you can mask symptoms of depression in one way and they manifest in others. Personally i think being just generally down and depressed is a much easier symptom than some of the other ways it can come out.
Question: what is wrong with her? My grandma has been sick for weeks. she's about 85 years old, she has dementia very badly but refuses to move into a nursing facility. She still lives by herself which is obviously a very bad idea, but we can't just pick her up and move its just really not possible. She started feeling sick around christmas time. We assumed it was the flu and basically just let it go. So now its back and forth between being simply okay and very very ill. She hasn't eaten in about 3 weeks or since christmas. she's lost about 20 pounds and looks terribly she can't stand by herself almost. she went to the doctor last week and she was like oh well do some blood work and they did but all that came back was her white cell count was a little high, but within normal range. She suffers from nausea, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea and whenever she eats she is sick. What could this dissease be, she's my last grandparent and i dont want to loose her =(
please help me
Answer: When people don't have an appetite and lose weight they are sometimes diagnosed with a form of cancer. When a person has a bacterial infection, the number of white cells rises very quickly. The number of white blood cells is sometimes used to find an infection or to see how the body is dealing with cancer treatment. Too many or too few of the different types of white blood cells can help find an infection, an allergic or toxic reaction to medicines or chemicals, and many conditions, such as leukemia.Conditions that cause high WBC values include infection, inflammation, damage to body tissues (such as a heart attack), severe physical or emotional stress (such as a fever, injury, or surgery), burns, kidney failure, lupus, tuberculosis (TB), rheumatoid arthritis, malnutrition, leukemia, and diseases such as cancer.
The use of corticosteroids, underactive adrenal glands, thyroid gland problems, certain medicines, or removal of the spleen can also cause high WBC values
Question: How can I convince my 69yr old Mom that she can't care for her 86yr old Mother w/ Alzheimer's anymore? My Mother, 69, who has health and pain problems of her own is trying to not only care for my Grandma, 86 with Alzheimer's, but also my Aunt, her Sister, who lives with my Grandma and is disabled to the point of being on a walker, not able to use her hands, and both of them fall all the time. I have begged her to consider an assisted living facility they can both stay in the same room/apt NOW before it gets any worse than what it is; my Grandma is paranoid, has tried to leave the house in the middle of the night, in the foreseeable future I believe she will become violent and my Aunt can not walk without her walker, her hands are curled in so she can't cook or even bathe herself correctly. Mom is out there staying about 3 nights a week when both my Aunt and Grandma need 24/7 care now; not later.
My Mother is only harming herself by trying to over do it in caring for two women who can no longer care for themselves.
There is even a problem with it being sanitary there as they both have diarrhea and the housekeeper and my Mom find feces all over the house and bathroom every single day.
This is more than my Mom can handle and I don't know how to get her to understand that she is not failing her Mother who had a TIA stroke and then went into this dementia immediately afterward. It has gotten out of hand and I don't want MY Mother to die from trying to care for her own Mother who can't say that she would rather be in a nursing home (as if she were in her right mind, she would've said this) and also her Sister who won't even do physical therapy to try and get better. The injuries they sustain from falling alone are beyond Mom's ability to care for them.
Any advice from people who have gone through this?
I know my Mom does feel guilty to some degree and thinks my Grandma will die sooner away from home. I have only one sister who is helpful but also runs her own company; there are only me, Mom, and my Sis. I do know my Mom and her reasons very well as she lives with me when she isn't there for 3 nights.
I see her becoming more incapable of doing this both mentally and physically and I love her.
I love my Grandma and Aunt with all my heart and commend the granddaughter who cared for her own Grandma. I am disabled and in chronic pain 24/7 and can not work so what help I give is a lot for someone in my condition; more than I am capable of even.
Thank you and any other helpful answers are appreciated although I don't think I could turn Mom into adult protective services as they are not being neglected either.
Answer: I wonder if your mother feels guilty and feels she is obligated to take care of them???? You should ask her why she is doing this, if she KNOWS she has problems of her own. I would talk to her and encourage her to at least look at facilities. She will find that they are qualified and prepared to take care of your relatives. Your mother does NOT need to take on this added burden and everyone will be much happier if they get the support they need in an assisted facility. She can visit anytime and she can have peace of mind at the same time.
Question: How long does it take to rehydrate an elderly person? I have an elderly relative that has dementia very frail doesn't eat much or drink some days. She has a lot of leg pain so that is the reason. The last couple days she has slept a lot & hasn't drank or ate much. Also she doesn't have much urine output, she slept 10 hours got up & just went a small amount. Urine is a dark yellow, a little lighter tonight, but when she pees it still isn't that much with all she drank. I'm sure the body is using it, and that is why. I called the dr. he said not to worry, just push fluids the next couple days, and it will pick up. She was more alert today did drink a lot more, but only about 100 liters all day. How much will she have to drink to get out more urine to a healthy volume again about how many days I mean? Her skin on her forehead doesn't tent when you pinch it together, she doesn't have diarrhea or vomiting, and she doesn't have sunken eyes, the corners are a little, but not the eye itself.
100cc is what I meant that isn't much in one of those urine pans. Also i give her dmannose daily in her drinks it keeps her from getting uti infections. I give her drinks all the time, but you can't make a person drink if they refuse, especially when they are in pain. Usually when she is not in pain she drinks more like today she drank more, but still the urine output is not much yet, that is why I wanted to know how many days does it take to rehydrate & get a good volume of urine again?
People that keep putting that home remedy site up please don't bother, everytime I put a question up I get a troll or whatever putting that up.
BTW the tenting on the back of her hands is not tight it is always wrinkled so not a good choice the forehead is what I check.
Answer: 100 litres!!!!! That is about 400 glasses, 25 gallons, anyway, an awful lot.
I am guessing you mean 1 litre, this is about half what an average person needs.
If she has dementia, then she will drink as often as you give her fluids, but won't realise she is thirsty.
Get a pretty cup or tumbler and fill it with something every hour. (Cranberry is great for preventing UTI, a problem in many dementia patients, try a dilute mix with water).
Present it to her, reminding her it is time for her drink, and wait while she drinks it, then remove the cup. If it is a standard 250ml cup, she should be well hydrated within 2 days.
I always found the back of the hand better for checking skin tenting for hydration levels.
Add: 100cc is about half what you need to be aiming for when fully hydrated. When dealing with my Mother-in-law with her Alzheimers, I found I could often get her to drink with presentation, (pretty glass, lace cloth, on a tray) and telling her it was the drink she had asked for. (She felt bad not drinking when I had gone to so much trouble). I also found it often worked to join her for "morning tea" or "afternoon tea", my cup often only had a mouthfull in it, and her loss of memmory let me get away with it several times a day. She would drink to keep up appearances because we were socialising. Hope one of these tricks helps you.
Question: risk assessment when pregnant? Hi All im looking for some advise i'm currently 17+1 wks with #1 i live in the UK. i work P/T in a nursing home as a care assistant. there is different units some lighter than others. i am working in EMI with vascular dementia, which is the most physically violent unit in there. i have been asking my employer to give me a risk assessment for weeks now and i'm just getting pushed from pillar to post it seems. im still doing all my same duties as lifting people, cleaning faeces and whatever else gets thrown at me. i feel so nervous about working now as one of the residents nearly stabbed me with a knife during dinner and another tried to attack me in the space of a week and i picked up diarrhea the other week from cleaning the stuff. i have mentioned this to senior staff and all there telling me is to watch myself. i always use gloves etc i dont know what else to do. im so worried incase something happens to the baby.
i'm 20 and i do need the money at the moment. Theres not enough money in the world to make up for my babies health.
Does anyone have an idea of what i should or should'nt be doing in work????
Answer: you should not be lifting , this is the main one, and you should not be in contact with people with diarrhea . you need to go to your employer and state that you are entitled to a full risk assessment and you need to be put onto lighter duties in on e of the lighter units. This is their LEGAL responibilty to you as an employee . I would put this in writing and keep a copy and ensure that they know that you will take it further if nothing is done. If nothing improves go to citizens advise and find out how you can get things changed.
