Question: Why are foods that are good for you and healthy so expensive? Like organic foods or just healthy foods with fiber and stuff like that? Why is it more expensive to live a healthy lifestyle? Why is it more expensive for foods that come straight from the source versus foods that have adatives to make them last longer and processed foods and foods that have a whole bunch of extra ingredients???
It is just something I have not come to understand. Any thoughts?
Answer: What you are paying for is mostly the cost of production. The more mechanized, the lower cost of production, the lower the cost to you, the consumer, but that also means the lowest quality food stuff. The low cost of highly mechanized farming is to blame, and that means they have to have a high yield, which means pesticides and it also means additives for spoilage and such. So, to have an equivalent yield from organic farming means more labor intensive production which drives the price higher. The cost of food is directly related to the amount of manual labor versus mechanized production. People want perishable items year round when really these are seasonal plants and such. To get year round crops means growing crops year round and that means transportation costs from the places where you CAN grow year round to the places you can't, and time is of the essence to keep the plants viable through sometimes long transport times. It all comes down to supply and demand combined with manual labor and mechanized production.
Question: What foods do you eat to comfort yourself? When I am feeling stressed or bothered by negative thoughts I like to comfort myself with food. I know this can be an unhealthy practice. Does anyone have any suggestions for comfort foods that can be healthy or at least not as bad as fast food or candy bars? I know about meditating and taking deep breaths. I do those as well, but I still would like to comfort myself with food and work my way up to being comforted by deep breaths and not food.
Answer: I was on a low carb diet and something I found very satisfying was diet A&W rootbeer mixed with some cream, or milk if you dont have cream.
also, a nice tomato based marinara over some stir fried onions peppers and mushrooms. Yummm!
And keep thinking positive, exercise and dont forget to reward yourself once in awhile...Friday night fish fry or something like that.
~Peace~
Question: What are good foods to use when your playing chubby bunny? Chubby bunny is a game where you take one piece of food, shove it in your mouth, don't swallow it, say "Chubby Bunny" out loud with the food in your mouth, then take another piece of food, shove it in your mouth, don't swallow it, say chubby bunny out loud with the food in your mouth, etc.
What are good foods to play chubby bunny with?
Answer: Chubby Bunny is a good way to choke to death. I would suggest finding other means of entertainment,.
Question: What other foods can help a dog with a bladder stone? My 3 year old chihuahua has a bladder stone and was given a Urinary SO diet dry dog food. He is very picky and won't eat the food even if its wet. I've been making him his own dog food since the big recall, and whatever I do he wont eat it (mixing it with other foods).
Is there anything I can make that can help with his bladder stone?
Answer: You need to know what type of stone before a diet can be determined... the treatment for one type of stone is nearly opposite the treatment for another.
Please consider joining Yahoo's K9KidneyDiet email group. There are a lot of people on it with tons of experience dealing with both bladder and kidney stones.
I rescued a dog with calcium oxylate bladder stones.. the group's FuzzerFood Diet has worked wonders for him and he's now doing well in his new (3 years now!) home.
Good luck,
Question: What are some healthy foods for someone with colon infection to eat? The lady i babysit went to the doctor the other day and she found out she has a colon infection. She always eats fast food and she isn't aloud to eat fast food anymore. What are some foods she might be able to eat that she will actually like. She hates eating healthy food and i know its kind of impossible to find foods she can eat that she will actually like, but any suggestions?
Answer: The lady with the infection ought to have gotten some specific information from her doctor about what she can and can't eat. If she has diverticulitis, she should be on a semi-liquid diet for a day or two (taking heavy doses of antibiotics) and then move to the BRAT diet for another day or two. That's bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Then she can eat whatever she likes as long as it's very low in fiber. Once the infection is gone, her doctor will tell her to eat lots of high-fiber foods, aiming at 30-35 grams a day.
If it's another type of infection, she should still be on antibiotics, but a different form of diet may be required. Avoiding fast food isn't enough. Really, her doctor is the one to advise her and there are alternatives to fast food -- maybe some veggie burgers would help. But she's got to get her physician's okay on whatever she eats.
Question: Foods and natural vitamins to strengthen heart and lungs of elderly patients? Are there any foods which have special vitamins or attributes to help people with COPD and CHF? Apparently there are millions of elderly people in the USA which suffer from either or both these. I have heard of Omega occurring naturally in fish, but COPD/CHF people have a lot of problems, such as getting too much carbon dioxide in their blood because of the breathing difficulty, as well as having to watch the salt intake_and apparently acid food.
Would any type of fish be okay? Should I just keep away from a certain type of fish? And most importantly is there any vegetable or food they should eat more of?
Answer: All veggies are good. Try and give variety...2 portions with each meal and make sure the veg are different colours. Do not over cook them, steam lightly.
Fish is good for everyone. Salmon, tuna, mackerel and other oily fish are best.
Question: What foods are good to eat after exercising? I'm looking to lose some weight this summer. I was just wondering what kinds of foods I should eat after running, to make sure that I'm not just gaining the weight back. I know that it's good to eat protein after exercising, but what foods have protein or other good things in them? Has anyone had any luck with certain foods?
Answer: You are right that it is best to eat protein after a workout, but you can still eat carbohydrates. Your body just needs something that can help it heal its damaged muscles. My favorite kind of food is peanuts or fish which I have a half an hour after I workout. Fruit is another food that would be good to eat.
Question: What are organic foods? How can we differentiate them with the other foods? This is what we call technology age and we are not sure anymore if the food we take in pass through technology too.So to be able not to have high risk diseases, why should we consume organic foods? Is it a must that we should be more conscious of our food nowadays? What do u think?
Answer: organic foods are foods that have not had artificial fertilisers and chemicals sprayed on them!
there is no way to distinguish them from non organic foods!
i think we should look at what we eat much closer! look back a few hundred years ago, things like cancer was almost non existent! these chemicals must be at least partly to blame!
and its not only us that should look at what we eat, there should be regulations and guidelines that farmers must follow!
i understand that without the artificial sprays there yield would be lower but they can use natural sprays and funding should be put into research into developing new natural sprays that are more effective!!
i want to have a completely chemical free diet sometime in the future!!

Chocolate doesn't cause acne, look it up....

Question: What foods are considered status symbols in various countries? Foods in Asian countries, and all other countries. Include foods that are expensive.
How did a certain food become a status symbol in its history?
Answer: Most Americans consider prime rib, lobster, lamb and veal to be sort of status symbols.
It's funny because lobsters used to be only fed to the poor in the 1800's.
I can only guess that certain foods became status symbols because only the upper class could afford it or it was more available to them...
...but I think everyone in the US from every economic group have tried at least two of the four I listed.
Question: What foods can you eat as a vegetarian that give you as much protein as meat? Considering going vegetarian, and I wanted to know: what foods are there that you can eat as a vegetarian? (besides junk food and fruit and veggies - I already know about those, of course) and what foods give you as much protein as meat, but are vegetarian friendly?
Answer: Vegetarians can obtain protein by eating a balance of incomplete proteins each day (legumes with grains or legumes with nuts and seeds) or by eating approximately 50g of complete protein from the following sources: amaranth, buckwheat, hemp seed, soy, quinoa, certain blue-green algaes (such as spirulina) as well as eggs and dairy products for those that allow them.
PS: Soy is fine, for girls AND guys, so long as you don't over do it. If you have a choice between unfermented soy products, like tofu, and fermented soy products, like tempeh, it's probably better to go for the fermented variety. The fermentation process drastically reduces the presence of phyto-estrogens (plant estrogens) that are naturally found in soy. There's some controversy as to whether or not these compounds can cause any damage to the human body, but no definitive results have been found. It's perfectly fine to eat soy, but to be on the safe side, don't rely on it as your main source of protein.
Karen -- I did add "for those that allow them" after the part about eggs and dairy. Since Sam is aking about a vegetarian, not a vegan, diet, I just assumed there might still be some animal products in there.
Question: What foods should you avoid if you have gallbladder pain? Twice in six months, I've had attacks of gallbladder pain which my chiropractor has treated successfully. Are there certain foods you would recommend avoiding to prevent future attacks? And secondly, are there foods which are comforting to a gallbladder? I know I need to avoid high fat foods, which seems to be my trigger. I definitely want to hold on to what is mine and avoid having a cholecystectomy! Any tricks to end the pain quickly when an attack does strike? Thanks so much for your help!
Answer: HI SweetIlene
Here are some ideas to resolve your issue.
Natural Cures
Most gallbladder surgeries can be easily avoided through nutritional and natural intervention, with emphasis on identification, avoidance, and treatment of food allergies.
Diet: Identify and avoid all foods to which you are allergic or sensitive, especially eggs, milk and dairy products, gluten, wheat and dairy products. Also reduce your saturated and overall fat intake, keeping it below 20 percent of the total foods you eat, and eliminate all processed and hydrogenated fats. But do not cut fat completely, as this can actually increase your chances of developing gallstones. Monounsaturated fats (olive oil, coconut oil) are the best fats to include in your diet.
Be sure to eat less, as well, since overeating places stress on the gallbladder. At the same time, be sure to eat breakfast, don`t skip meals, and eat a balanced and healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes and other vegetarian sources of protein. Increase your intake of dietary fiber to improve bowel movements, and avoid refined carbohydrates, which can cause gallstone formation. Overall, eat less animal foods, remove processed foods and move toward a whole foods vegetarian-oriented diet. If you are overweight, lose the weight, but slowly and sensibly.
Good foods to include in your diet are black cherries, pears, beets (raw and cooked), fresh steamed and water sautéed greens such as beet tops collards, kale, plenty of steamed broccoli and cauliflower, snack on seasonal fruits, eat plain organic yogurt, as well as more raw foods in general.
Gallbladder Flush: Flushing the gallbladder of stones is a common natural cure and practice of holistic physicians. It is quite easy.
For six days do the following: Eat a whole foods diet with no animal products and no processed, refined foods. Eliminate all flour products, eat whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice. Limit dairy products to organic plain yogurt. Drink plenty of raw, fresh apple juice, and eat applesauce and organic apples as both meals and snacks. Eat fresh leafy green salads, steamed vegetables, tofu, tempeh, and vegetable soups.
On the afternoon of the seventh day, have 1/2 cup of extra virgin olive oil mixed with 1/3 cup of fresh lemon juice. Drink all at once and skip your evening meal. Go to bed early (no later than 10 p.m.), and sleep with your right knee tucked up to your side. In the morning, you should eliminate the gallstones, which will appear greenish yellow. Make sure your having regular bowel movements and if not be sure to do a colon cleanse first, before the GB flush. Six months to a year after your first gallbladder flush, you should repeat the process.
The protocol just described is a very gentle non-invasive gallbladder flush. See Cleansing and Detoxification for a more advanced detailed protocol.
Herbs: Combine the tinctures of wild yam, fringetree bark, milk thistle, and balmony in equal parts and take one teaspoon of this mixture three times a day. An infusion of chamomile or lemon balm can also be taken regularly throughout the day.
Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. I suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments.
Juice Therapy: The following juice combinations can help improve gallbladder health: carrot, beet, cucumber, radish, and fresh dandelion roots, with a clove of garlic; or grape, pear, grapefruit, and lemon.
Lifestyle: Choose non-toxic cleaning supplies and personal body care products.
Nutritional Supplementation: The following supplements can help relieve gallbladder symptoms: digestive enzymes with each meal, vitamin B-complex, vitamin C, choline, inositol, lipotrophic factors, alfalfa tablets, acidophilus, lecithin, and the amino acid, L-taurine. Peppermint oil sipped in water throughout the meal can also be helpful.
Topical Treatment: Castor oil packs placed over the gallbladder can speed relief of symptoms.
Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating gallstones and gallbladder disorders: Acupuncture, Detoxification Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, and Osteopathy
Cause
Toxins overloading into your system from chemicals, additives, processed and junk foods, as well as excessive saturated animal fat in the diet, contribute to gallbladder problems. If the liver becomes overloaded with excess saturated fats, the gallbladder gets stressed and inflamed. This excess of saturated fats become cholesterol deposits and when enough have formed, they crystallize with the bile to form gallstones.
Women get gallstones four times as frequently as men, especially women over 40 years old who are fair-skinned, and overweight. Twenty percent of adults over 65 years of age get gallstones that create problems and pain. Over half a million surgeries are performed each year to remove gallbladders due to gallbladder disorders, the most common being gallstones. And this can be easily be avoided by cleansing the body of toxins.
Constipation, food allergies (especially to milk products and eggs), digestive disorders (especially caused by a deficiency of hydrochloric acid), intestinal diseases, an excessively low-fiber diet, dental disturbances, parasites, rapid weight loss, and stress can all cause or contribute to gall stones and other gallbladder disorders. For lasting relief of symptoms, all of these factors must be addressed if they are present.
Best of health to you
