Question: What herbs are safe to take to boost my milk supply? I'm breastfeeding my 3 month old daughter and my milk supply is low. I know we're just getting more in tune with each other - it's not that. It's getting low. What are some SAFE herbs to take and still breastfeed her to boost my milk supply? Also - any other techinques to boost my milk supply?
Please when suggesting herbs - have a website in mind so I can go read more about the herb! I appreciate it!
Answer: FENUGREEKis a great herb to boost milk supply (i have no website though). I take it now and it works great. It wont make you overproduce but keeps to regular. It can cause a bit of gas, so start slow. It will make your sweat smell like maple syrup - that way you know its working. My gyn recommended this to me for both kids. I swear by it.
There is one other herbal concoction I saw at Whole Foods, but i cant remember the name.
Drink a bottle of water at each feeding. It wont make more milk, but it will ensure that you keep your supply up. Nursing takes alot of fluid out of you and you need to replenish. If you excercize as well, drink two bottle after your workout.
Pump in between feedings. This is really hard to do if you work or are busy with other kids. I try to stay up after the last feeding and pump one more time before bed. That way I am building up a stash and increasing the demand for milk (or so my body thinks) the more that is demanded, the more you will make.
Question: Herb Bread sticks - what herbs do you put on your soft bread sticks? What herbs do you use when you make the soft breadsticks?
Has anyone tried a combination of rosemary, thyme, parsley and brushed with olive oil?
12/12/08 - thanks everyone for all your great suggestions.
Answer: Yes, just fresh rosemary, olive oil, pepper and salt. Also on foccocia bread.
Question: Which herbs and plants are easiest to grow for someone that is not familiar with gardening? I live in New Orleans, Louisiana and have been wanting to grow my own herbs and small plants. I don't have experience in gardening whatsoever and I'd like to know what I should start off with and what plants/herbs are good for this climate (hot and humid). I would like to plant something within the next month. What's good to plant at this time of year?
Answer: Oregano is such an easy herb! The benefit is that is can be used for such a wide variety of things, and it is a perennial so it will come back every year!
Other no brainers (and I know this from my own personal experience) is lemon verbena, thyme (lemon thyme as well) rosemary, mint, and lavender, and basil.
I have had some troubles with sage, but maybe it doesn't like Ohio weather, so the humid/hot might be good for it! Pretty much any herb is workable, just buy from a good source (preferably a farmer's market) and read any labels. I know having them indoors vs. outdoors makes a difference as well, so what I share is just from having outdoor herbs. (I just dug up the ground, plopped them in, and they lived!)
Good luck!
Question: I want to start growing herbs and using them in cooking? My family has never used a lot of herbs in cooking, but I love almost every herb I've tried. I would love to have tips on what herbs taste good with different foods, Also, any advice on growing my own herbs indoors would be great! Thanks!
Answer: I would put them in small pots by themselves, some herbs multiply like crazy-- like spearmint and cilantro. You probably don't want them mixing all around.
Question: Which are the easiest herbs to grow indoors? I live in a small apartment with no yard/garden access, but would love to grow herbs in flower pots. Which herbs do best indoors and which do not require too much sunlight (I don't get a whole lot of direct sunlight in my apt.)? My herbs of choice would be basil, rosemary and parsley. Tips or advice anyone?
Answer: Hi my name is Marty, I am a horticulturist living in Sydney Australia. I would like to answer your question.
There are many herbs that you could grow and trial. Parsley and Mint will do fine and Basil.
Rosemary needs a lot of light.
I have just started a new website named
www.apartment-gardening-homes.com. This website will answer your questions in more detail.
The site is new and new pages are yet to be added, but it has exactly what you want. Go to indoor herbs.
Anything else feel free to contact me.

Question: What are some antifungal herbs I can take to clear up my skin infection? I have tinea versicolor. I've tried several different things, but they haven't worked for me. I can't see a doctor right now, and I've heard of herbs that often do the trick, but I need a little guidance. Any help would be appreciated.
By the way, I understand that natural does not always equal safe, so I will be sure to do plenty of research before purchasing and trying any herbs or supplements. Thanks!
Answer: I agree with jaye... coconut oil soap , sulfur soap and tea tree oil are great, i get my Kirk's coconut oil soap from iherb.com. you can go to retailmenot and get a 5 off 5 coupon so just in case you don't like the soap the only thing u lose is paying for shipping.
I also use the pure oil on my skin. be careful with the sulfur though, a lot of people are allergic to it

Question: Which herbs grow best together in the same box? I am a beginner gardener and have purchases lots of herbs for window boxes including : rosemary, mint, lavender, thyme, chamomile, sweet basil, chocolate mint, chives...and also a smal jalapeño plant. I was wondering which herbs would best work together in a window box? are there certain herbs that shouldnt be put together? are there any that should be potted alone? Id appreciate any help! thanks!
Answer: The mints, both ordinary and chocolate need to be seperate as they will take over any pot they are in and they prefer shadier conditions than lavender, thyme and the pepper. (They all need full sun to do well) The rosemary needs to be seperate as it will grow fairly large eventually. The rest can all be planted together. Basil is an annual btw, meaning it will only grow for the one season.

Question: what herbs are best to use when making garlic bread? theres a recipe im following, and part of it is to make garlic bread. It says to use herbs with the garlic bread...but doesnt say what herbs exactly. So does anyone know what herbs would be best to use for garlic bread?
Answer: I'm not sure at all, but if you want to make REAL Italian garlic bread, which is what "bruschetta" (pronounced "broo-sket-ta") is, all you have to do is toast slices of bread, either over a flame, under a broiler, or in a toaster, and then, while still hot, rub one surface with a peeled, cut garlic clove. Then you drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle on a little salt. This is the basic (and delicious) bruschetta.
There are also a number of toppings for bruschetta: chopped tomatoes, olive paté, artichoke paté, chopped cooked chicken livers... I've recently discovered that baba ghanoush (an eggplant or eggplant+chickpea spread) and hummus (chickpea spread) are also really good on bruschetta; in this case, you can eliminate the garlic on the bread, because it's already in the spread.

But the simple, "real" thing is the plain garlic bruschetta. No butter, garlic salt, or herbs needed.
Question: What are the mysterious herbs and spices in Pampered Chef's Italian Seasoning Mix? It lists the ingredients as dehydrated onion, dehydrated garlic, oregano, basil, marjoram, herbs, spices. Do you know what the other herbs and spices are and the quantities you'd use of each for the mix?
Answer: season salt i think
Question: What herbs do I need to start a Wiccan herb garden? I'm a young witch and I want to start a herb garden, so I don't have to go out and buy them.
I just want to know what are the necessary herbs, you know, ones I'd be using a lot of spells.
I don't mind the cost, as long as I can find them in my local garden centres.
Answer: I would recommend sage for smudge sticks, wisdom and healing. rosemary and thyme are good for purification and protection spells, basil for creativity, balance. These are all good all round cooking herbs too.
Question: Do herbs grow better outdoors or indoors during the Southern Alaskan summer? I just bought a bunch of herbs, and I can't decide whether to plant them outside or inside. I live in Southern Alaska, so I'm not sure whether they would thrive outdoors or indoors. It could be warm enough to grow them outdoors (it got almost to 70 degrees last week!), but it gets rather chilly sometimes, especially when the wind blows.
Answer: Which area? I lived in Anchorage for awhile and grew some herbs there.
If you are in Juneau it may be quite different than my Anchorage experience.
What herbs are you growing? Annual herbs should be fine. Perennial herbs may or may not survive the winter. Either should be find for the summer.
Thyme did fine for me there. Lavender had some difficulty.
Question: What is the best kind of potting soil for herbs? Hi, I received a Chia Herb Garden for Xmas and my herbs are outgrowing their pots. This is my first attempt at an herb garden and I was wondering what kind of potting soil would be best? These herbs will be grown indoors. Thanks for any info!
Answer: Hi,
Herbs will grow in any good garden soil. The soil should not be extremely acid or alkaline, a soil nearly netural is best for most herbs. You need a pH reading between 6.5 and 7.0/ This seems to work best for me. If you are growing you herbs in pots, use a mix of about two parts potting soil to one part coarse sand or perlite
