Information On Eating Disorders
Question: Where can I find good information on eating disorders? I know someone who has real issues eating fruit or vegetables and so they have an issue concerning their weight. Its seems a real issue of actually not being able to consume it
Answer: I would say that you can just google it, just type in eating disorder information, or eating disorder resources. Here are some started links for you to see if any of these help:
http://www.caringonline.com/
or
http://eatingdisordersonline.com/
Some basic info, just know that it is hard to come out of an eating disorder and that it is sometimes hard to face that they have an issue. But it is something that can be overcome with time and support.
Some FYI for ya, it is national eating disorder week, Feb. 4-10. So there might also be some events going on around you that are passing out eating disorder information, if you wanted to search for that as well, that would definitely help a lot, because then you could talk to someone live about the issues and your questions about the disorder.
Question: Does anyone know a site with an abundant information on eating disorders? I'm looking for sites that are written or edited by someone with a PhD, or by a medical clinic, or by an university/college?
Answer: kfc.com
Question: Where can i find information on Eating Disorders? Websites, Leaflets, Books or anything?
Thanks.
Answer: The Eating Disorders Association's website is good - www.b-eat.co.uk
They can send you out leaflets and information too. There are also personal accounts of people's battle with anorexia. I found Perfect by Emily Halban was really good. There is also a book called Thin but I can't remember who it's by but I found that very insightful.
Question: why isn't there much information\ awareness of eating disorders in the Philippines? I'm doing a report on eating disorders but there is like no info on the net about Philippines statistics. Does anyone know a site or explain why there isn't much about it?
Answer: There are three known eating disorders : Anorexia Nervosa, Orthorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.
Most of the people afflicted with these disorders are teenagers and young adults... mostly females. Most of them belong to the middle and upper class group of the society, most of them are achievers and they get very depressed whenever they feel that they've failed according to one's expectation.. it gives them low self-esteem and a disturbed body image. They starve themselves, induce vomiting, and sometimes do desperate measures to lose weight -- overexercising, use of laxatives and enema. These are PSYCHIATRIC CASES with "starvation", malnutrition and electrolyte imbalance as physical complications. Bulimic patients are known to have a tendency to commit suicide or to do self mutilation.. they are impulsive. These patients usually have money to go a Psychiatrist for treatment that's why their disorder gets discovered. Few people are diagnosed with eating disorders, cos few can afford to go to psych specialists.
Most of the people in the Philippines belong to the lower classes -- the kind of mental/psychological problems they get : Depression -Suicide, Schizophrenia , Psychoses secondary to Substance abuse. These mental disorders pose more danger to the society compared to eating disorders. Psychiatrists won't do house to house case finding to treat patients with eating disorders.
The problem here in the Philippines is that there are a lot of people out there who are living iN poverty... they don't have enough money to buy food. Malnutrition in children is the focus of the Department of Health that's why they have the UNDER FIVE program. "Operation Timbang", Expanded program on Immunization, deworming and Vitamin A supplementation of children 5 years and below. DOH also prioritizes program on Maternal and Child care... but NOT on eating disorders.
Psychiatric cases are not the top priority of Dept. Of Health. DOH prioritizes urgent conditions -- communicable diseases like TB, Pneumonia & Measles. Cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and metabolic diseases -- diabetes mellitus, hypertension. recently, the focus of DOH is on AH1N1 influenza and Dengue Fever.. Malaria -- in rural cases.
The Philippines lack Psychiatrists (only 500 Psychiatrists in the Philippines I heard it in a documentary last year, so the doctors you see in mental health facilities... not all of them are psychiatrists - others are neurologists, and internists)...
Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia and Orthorexia Nervosa are medical diagnoses... Only a Psychiatrist can give definitive diagnoses of such disorders.. based on DSM-IV -- the manual of doctors in diagnosing mental and psychological disorders. Most of the patients in the National CEnter for mental health have "Psychotic cases" related to genetic predisposition (Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia), drug abuse and severe depression, NOT eating disorders.
Popular Filipinas who have been known to have eating disorders : Miriam Defensor Santiago, Snooky Serna.

Answer: I only know some about anorexia. About 10% of people who get anorexia, are males, while the other 90% are females. 13% to 20% of people who suffer from anorexia actually end up dying. Anorexia is when the person views themselves as fat, even when they may be extremely thin. Anorexia can normally begin with just dieting and reducing your calorie intake, but it can actually "grow," and that is when it becomes extremely hard to treat. People with anorexia normally tend to suffer from depression and have low or no self esteem. It is more common in areas such as California, or higher income places as thin is what is in basically. People who have parents who have high expectations and suffer from a lot of stress are more likely to get the disease as well. Anorexia also comes with a hardcore exercising routine, which is normally done late at night to avoid being caught by parents or guardians. If you have anorexia, you will vehemently deny suffering from it, and the mention of food or calories can cause a wave of depression to hit you.

Answer: This is my story cause i was anorexic.I was anorexic for about 2 years. My parents finally caught on when i wasnt eating at home i would tell them i ate a big lunch at school and then they checked the school lunch list of people who eat and i want on it all year. So they made me set and eat with the school nurse for about a week and i said i had it under control and i could start eating ok. But i didnt start eating it progressed to not even eating a little bit. And i was in track and i passed out. They took me to the hospital where i stayed for about a week and a half. I didn't loose friends over it they were concerned for me and they helped me through it. I still have times now were i can eat or i can go about a week without really eating much. Hope this helps you out on your paper!

Answer: Yes, that definitely sounds like a major problem which would qualify as an eating disorder. Please get help now before this can effect your life any more than it already has. Talk to your doctor and ask for a referral to a nutritionist and psychologist who specialize in eating disorders so that you can get the help you need.
This website has a lot of helpful information about eating disorders: http://www.something-fishy.org/
If you have any more questions, I'm anorexic and in recovery and I'd be glad to help you. My email is [email protected]
Question: dose any one have any information they can share on eating disorders? ok here we go. me, my grandma, her boyfriend, his two kids and my brother and his girlfriend went to walmart today and all of a sudden matt my grandmas bfs son blacked out then came back to consuse but he was very pale the paramedics took his blood pressure which was 60 real low. but any ways my grandma thinks he is anarexic because she says he has gotten taller but hasnt gain any weight. so please if you can give me any information at all i would greatly appreseate it. hes like one of my best friends and im worried so pleaz help if you can. (i think he may be diabetic but my grandma dose not think so)
Answer: Diabetic? could be with weight loss..does he drink a lot of water and urinate a lot and get very hungry at times??...Anorexia nervosa is usually in teen girls but boys can have it also. It is usually a perfectionist kid, who feels like they have to take control and save everyone but themselves...soon they feel out of control so in order to feel like they are in more control of their lives they control what food they will or won't eat. They think they are fat when they are not. Karen Carpenter had this and she died of electolyte imbalance (probably not enough potassium) and had heart failure. Cherry Boone also had this and I think she wrote a book about it. You could check in the library for books on Anorexia nervosa or eating disorders...he needs to have a doctor check him out meanwhile
Question: Doing a project on Eating Disorders, help Please.? I am doing a project on bulimia nervosa, and one thing i am wondering is what kinds of laxatives bulimics use when they eat? Any information on this and how it is done would be great as i know about the binging and purging ways they eat then throw up, but like I said I am looking on what laxatives they use and how they use it, and why they would want to do something like this to their body? Any help is appriciated.
Answer: Personally, my preferred brand of laxatives was Dulcolax. People will use whatever they can get their hands on, though.
I never took the recommended dosage (2-3 pills), not even when I started. When I started I would take 5 pills, then I'd binge. After a while my body got used to that amount so I upped it to 10. Then 15.
You are able to know when your body gets used to the amount being taken, because as time goes on you start getting more painful cramps, more often. Plus, you'll start getting less of a result (as in the amount of "stuff" that comes out decreases.)
The laxatives don't do anything to get rid of the calories ingested and I knew that when I was taking them. (I ended up gaining over 25 lb because of that.) I kept taking them, because I loved the empty feeling it would leave. I didn't want anything "dirty" inside of me and the laxatives "helped" with that.
(I'm sorry if whatever I wrote doesn't make any sense. My brain's a little off today. ^-^)
Question: Can you list all of the Eating Disorders? I am writing a paper for psychology on eating disorders, but can find only information about anorexia nervosa and bulimia. What are the other eating disorders? My psych book only covers anorexia and bulimia, and I can't find much online except pro ED sites, and I don't need that. Just need to know what all the EDs are by name. Thanks!
Answer: anorexia, bolemia and obesity...? plus there's TONS of phobias to food. like arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. Go figure!
Question: Do I have an eating disorder? I'm 16, 5'4" and 88 pounds.
I know i'm underweight but it does run in my family. But hardly.
I'd first like to point out that early this summer I was diagnosed with a peanut oil food sensitivity/allergy. Also I must stay away from things with yeast, some fruits, corn startch all that stuff. I have to read every lable before I consume anything, and if I eat something i'm not supposed to I feel sick for about a week.
This whole thing has lately been controlling my life. I'm almost obsessed with it, with half the fear of getting sick. My friends and family think I'm anorexic. I eat very little...but I try to eat so I don't feel like passing out. I get dizzy when I stand up, I feel nauseous sometimes..
I've had a history of anxiety and I still get it a lot. I haven't been happy with my life and I often feel depressed. I've also had a history of sexual abuse. I've been trying to avoid things like seeing friends or family. I'm just not me anymore and i'm really scaring myself.
I see myself in the mirror and I think "Wow I should lose some weight" and other times I look and go "Wow...I'm just way too skinny." its terrifying. My mother says she's close to checking me into a hospital. I'd also like to point out everyone in my family/friends know about my peaunt oil alergy...but they've noticed i've been very obsessed with it.
I have my on and off days, one minute I feel fine but not the next. I want help, but i'm scared to talk to anyone.
I've been looking up information behind eating disorders but maybe I just need to hear it from someone who has/had one. Can you help me?
Answer: A dietician can help you make up a list of foods that will be safe for you to eat. That will take all the guess work out of this and you can start eating healthy again. Most hospitals have a dietician.
Question: I need help to prevent my friend from eating less and less.? So, I have a friend. Let's call her L. (It's not me, cross my heart and kiss my elbow.) She's had problems. Lots of boyfriends. Depression. Being criticized by people. She can be self centered and just not a good friend. Anyways, that's not really the point. The point is, I've been trying to help her out. Lately, she hasn't been eating much. She's a bit overweight, and has gained weight recently. For the past four days, she's barely been eating anything. The other day, she didn't buy lunch but I convinced her to buy a snack. Today she only ate a grape and said she felt sick and went to the nurse. I asked her if she threw up after meals, she said no. She said she wasn't doing it on purpose. But she's lied before, so I'm not sure. She usually can eat anything just fine. This seems fishy to me because i've had real bad problems with my stomach since elementary. Real bad. And I've never gotten sick from something like a grape, it just doesn't seem right. I'm going to advise her to see the doctor. Anyways. Let me wrap this up.
What do I say to her? Do you think she has a problem? Am I worrying too much? Are these signs of an eating disorder?
Also, additional information about eating disorders would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
No one wants to help me?
I was just on aim and was talking to L:
Me (6:30:15 PM): do you care about what's happening?
L (6:30:52 PM): inside i do, but my mind has other plans
Me (6:30:58 PM): like?
L(6:31:23 PM): that it will help me. i look better! i'll look like my friends... in a way!
Answer: my friend went through a patch were she didnt eat anything, i actually told my form tutor who got the head of year to check if she was eating every lunch time. but you know you can get advice off of the internet because there is a lot around. yeah i think she does have a problem, but its because of her age if your around the teenager age people are prone to become more concious about her weight. hopefully she will get over it soon
Question: how did people find out about sonny moore's eating disorder? did he tell someone directly or did his parents/friends/family find out on accident?
also, any other information on his eating disorder?
Answer: I remeber reading someone heard him throwing-up his food,
Question: Constant problem with eating disorders (pica), and other oral fixations. How can I ween myself off? I am a 21 year old male, who has had no history of mental or physical disorders. I say that, since all the information I've found on pica is based on the idea that it occurs in the handicapped, and infants. For as long as I can remember, I've chewed on plastic (hard plastic),and consumed paper, both in large amounts. It's a problem I've had for several years now. This, naturally, has lead to other things, such as rarely eating burnt matches, contact glue, and toothpicks. Recently, it's somehow escalated to duct tape. I'm assuming by the white lines on my fingernails, and the borderline insomnia I've had the past ten years or so, may be connected, but I'm not sure. Without saying gum, what are some ways I could stop? It isn't as simple as not doing it, I have a physical craving and near dependency on this. Looking online, I've seen that neither a therapist or medical physician could help much. Basically it's something I have to see through myself, just not sure how.
Answer: most small things will pass through, so maybe concentrate on cutting things up in to tiny pieces b4 eating them.
try to limit the plastic, and toothpics, maybe you could find things that look, feel or taste like what you crave, for toothpics, you could try raw spaghetti, burnt matches you could try burnt cheese, glue , you could make your own glue out of flour and water till its really glue like.
try to limit the really harmful stuff, paper is really not to bad, and you can get rice paper which is actually quite nice.
is this something you do all day? or just now and again, try setting a timer, for one minute each day you can eat what you crave.
we can overcome cravings - look at alchoholics and druggies, they do it, you can do it too.
i remember seeing in the guiness book of records a man ate almost a whole car, and he ate glass and all sorts of things - he did it for years, he did finally die though - but maybe there are other people like you out there
