Natural Food Stores
Question: Any good natural food stores or beauty aid stores in your area? I am a sales rep and am looking to place my organic body and skin care products in new locations. Any suggestions for me in your area?
State and City would be good info as well so i can get a hold of them. FYI, I am already in Whole Foods.
Answer: Trader Joe's, a few locations in suburban chicago. they deal with many smaller manufactures. they carry natural and organic products, some vegan, some vegetarian, but also some regular stuff too. many ppl go there who shop whole foods also to get organic or natural and environmental hygiene and cleaning products, wild caught fish, dairy and meat products w/o hormones for cheaper than wholefoods.
since you are a bit familiar with wholefoods i'll give you an idea from the shopper's point of view: i get these products for cheaper the at trader joe's, then i hit wholefoods for produce and other organic food items i can't get at trader joe's. i rarely look in the cosmetic aisle at whole foods, as i know its a bit pricey. i do however look in trader joe's every week. p.s. they have a lot of natural cosmetic products, few organic cosmetic products.
oh yeah, i almost forgot the fruitful yield, also having several locations in the suburban chicago area.
trader joe's/glen ellyn,il - downer's grove,il (and more)
fruitful yeild/ lombard,il - bloomingdale,il (and more)
ps green living growing in chicago and businesses/products haven't widely expanded from the city out to the suburbs yet. (im pioneering a non-toxic,environmental residential cleaning service in the burbs right now ;)
Question: Are those soaps you find in natural food stores just a gimmick? You know, the ones that are sold without packaging and come in different varieties like "oatmeal", "chamomile", "tea tree", etc. I feel like they must just make all the soaps the same way with regular soap ingredients, and throw in a bit of some extra ingredient because it sells better that way. Does anybody know how these soaps are made? Are they really better than the mass-produced & packaged ones?
Answer: It is best to learn now that 90% of soaps, shampoos, body creams, conditioners, laundry products etc are GIMMICKS!
I think your assumption about selling better is 100% right.
Question: How do you shop at natural food stores without going broke?? Today I went to Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Rainbow Blossom. We got 3 bags of items (and not many items in those bags) and spent $120. I found that Wild Oats was the least expensive of the three, but how do you shop there without spending every dime in your pocket?
Answer: I think the best way is to limit your spending at natural food stores to the particular items you value most. I grew up shopping at co-ops, but only for specific items. If you are interested in organic produce, for example, buy that there, but also look into your local grocery stores, farmer's markets, etc, and do some price comparisons. A lot of the time, I will buy 2-3 items a week at a natural food store and buy the rest at a normal grocery store because there may not be that much of a difference between stores. However, I love fruit leather, certain kinds of tea, and toiletries from health food stores, so I will spend the extra money for those items.
Also, consider joining a co-op instead of buying at whole foods and wild oats- these stores are trendier, and therefore more expensive. Trader Joe's has a good in-store brand for essentials like olive oil, veggies, etc- but it does take research. Co-ops are a good investment if you are serious about shopping for lots of food and items in a health food store- they often offer discounts and tax reductions on certain items. My hometown co-op also offers, one day a month, 20% off of your whole purchase, which means that if you plan well, you can save a lot of money once a month. Look into it!
Question: natural food stores in the houston northside area? Am looking for a natural/Organic food store in the houston northside area so I can buy some sesame oil for oil pulling, anybody know where some stores are at??
Answer: You can get sesame oil at most supermarkets. It doesn't have to be a whole foods store. Also, oil pulling doesn't really work like they say it does. Some people may experience a placebo effect, but in general, it's just kind of a fluke. But, if you can talk your mind into believing it's working, you may experience placebo benefits. Plus, it makes you feel really awful the first couple of days until your body gets used to it. I've read you can also try other oils, if you don't feel like buying sesame oil. Sesame oil has a really strong taste, so 10 minutes of pulling might be disgusting. Ok, sorry for the unsolicited advice.

Question: Moving to Ketchikan, Alaska. Any Natural Food Stores? We visited back in July, and I did not see any Natural Food Store, or Organic food stores. The only grocery stores I saw were the A&P and Safeway. I live in Mendocino Ca (Northern Coastal Ca) where there is a plethora of organic and natural food stores. I am feeling a little uneasy to be moving to an area that does not have that. Maybe Ketchikan does, but I just didnt see it, and looked in the phonebook and didnt find anything. Is there a farmers market as well??
Any advice would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks!
Thanks Paula! Is this a Natural Food Store? Or just vitamins, herbs, and such? Couldn't find any info on Google.
Woops! I mean Paul...

Question: Why is the natural food store soooo expensive? I just became vegan recently and have been visiting different organic stores. I noticed a huge hike in the price compared to our every day grocery stores. Is it worth buying from these stores than the grocery stores? I don't want to spend a crap load of money if I don't have to. Also regarding organic soaps and shampoos.... I noticed like a 8 oz bottle is like $8 (cheapest). Does the shampoo and bars of soap last a long time compared to Suave and Herbal Essence? If it does, I'll try it, but I am only a nurses aid and I'm not rollin in the dough. Thanks to you all for taking your time to help a friend out!
Answer: Two really cheap vegan hair products:
White Rain, 80 cents or so for a 20 oz. bottle, found in any Target, Walmart, etc. is incidentally made without animal testing or using animal products.
And something I've heard but never tried, is using baking soda, which is pretty cheap - http://www.naturalfamilyonline.com/go/index.php/389/why-you-should-go-no-poo/

Question: How do you start a natural food store or spa? I am a freshman in college and I am trying to decide on a major. I have become interested in possibly owning my own health food store or co-op, or some sort of place with alternative healing methods. I was wondering if anyone who owns something like this could tell me how they got it started, what they studied in college, etc. Is it very difficult? About how much money will it cost? How do you attract people to shop there? Stuff like that. Thank you.

Question: Why isn't Natural Balance cat food sold in more pet stores? The only store that sells Natural Balance is Petco. It's close by, but I also like Petsmart and other stores. Sometimes they are out of some of the canned flavors my cats like. I feel cheated that now I found a great healthy food...I'm stuck with only one store.
Should I buy online?
Answer: It seems that Petco and Petsmart sell very few of the same brands, for some odd reason. But NB is easy to find, at least for me. Do you have any other pet stores? The three small chains in my area all carry NB. Try some different ones - there are more choices out there than the two big ones. Failing that, buying online is easy. I get most of my food from petfooddirect.com. After you've made your first purchase, you get email coupons every week or so for between 13% and 20% off your order, which more than compensates for the shipping charges. The often have sales on some of the brands, too. And since you're buying by the case, the price tends to be a bit lower as well.
Question: positions for HOLIDAY natural food store? What is a list of work positions for HOLIDAY natural food store? I am applying for a job there but i wish to know all the positions and select a few i wish to apply for, like cashier, packaging, ect... What is the list for this?
Answer: You should just ask them what positions are available. I assume they are like every other store and need cashiers, baggers, stockers etc.
