Natural Wonders
Question: Why is the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro considered one of the natural wonders of the world? Because I am doing my english oral presentation of the subject of The Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
And on every list there is on the natural wonders, the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro is on there.
I have researched it slightly and I do not see why it is so facinating. I even looked at it from google earth. It doesn't look that spectacular.
Am I missing something? Is it really that great and I just don't see why?
Because all of the others on the list truley are amazing and I'm not sure how this compares.
Answer: It's a beauty. The geography of it, it's just phenomenal. And that Jesus statue they have is a symbol of Rio de Janeiro
Question: On the Yahoo article about the 7 Wonders of the Natural World where was the photo taken of the mushroom trees? The photo was only shown on the Yahoo front page. I couldn't find it anywhere in the article, nor even on the nominated 7 Natural Wonders site. The picture showed 5 or 6 of these big trees on a hill. The trees were shaped like giant mushrooms, they were spectacular. Any help greatly appreciated!
Answer: The trees are dragon trees (Dracenaea draco) and were meant to represent the Socotra Archipelago in Yemen (although they grow elsewhere too!).
Question: Does anyone know the seven natural wonders of the world? I want real answers not perve answers. You know the report abuse I'm not afraid to use it. Anyway please tell me what the 7 natural wonders are. i have no idea. I know about 3. I have about 4 more to go.
Yes I do know how to use search engines loser. Like I know to got to cnn.com.

2. Victoria Falls in Zambia/Zimbabwe
3. Grand Canyon in Arizona/USA
4. Great Barrier Reef in Australia
5. Northern Lights
6. Paricutin Volcano in Mexico
7. Harbor of Rio De Janeiro/Brazil
Question: Who has the right to name the Natural Wonders? I saw these so called new natural wonders and I personally would like to know what credentials these people have that makes them able to say what is a natural wonder and what isn't.
Answer: their method was to get the world to vote. but only those with computer knowledge can do so. this excludes million others. but then its not easy.
again it was sponsored by a multi billionaire. so he calls the shots! unfair too. right?
maybe unesco, world heritage sites body and reps from each continent and as many ethnic and religious group shld also vote. again, sheer numbers of one grp will overwhelm the others.
so there is no fair system.
the west still dominates as they hv the $$ and power
Question: What is one of "your" most favorite natural wonders of the world? Some of the "natural" wonders include:
1.) Grand Canyon 2.) Great Barrier Reef
3.) Harbor Of Rio de Janeiro 4.) Mount Everest
5.) Polar Aurora 6.) Paracutin Volcano
7.) Victoria Falls
Maybe it's one of these. Or, maybe you think that some other magnificant natural wonder deserves a shot at the top seven. Let me here your choice... and maybe tell us why you think your pick deserves recognition. It may be just because you think it is "cool". Whatever you pick is your choice...
PS.. remember, I said "natural" wonders. Not "manmade" wonders..
Answer: The clear blue water of the Caribbean Sea
Question: Erosion causes many natural wonders and man-made objects to gradually disappear over time? Should we spend large amounts of money to preserve natural wonders and other objects or should we let nature run its course?
Give reasons?
Answer: Absolutely not! The Earth constantly renews itself through the processes of erosion, volcanism and mountain building. Why would you want to screw around with this process?
Question: What is better; Man made Wonders or Natural Wonders? In your own opinions, which do you think is more wonderous? Man made or Natural Wonders? And give examples to support your ideas please.
Answer: hmmm well natural is more beautiful and serene and it calms you
where man made wonders such as the taj mahal or pyramaids WOW you, its makes you think more and wonder more how men like you without advanced technology can do this all with their hands. But it dosent make you feel calm or peaceful, it works your brain more but in an interesting way.
So i guess i would say man made, its more interesting to me.

Thank you very much!
Answer: Aurora Borealis
Also known as polar auroras
The northern lights are the most notable, but a southern aurora does occur in the southern hemisphere
No specific or consistent measurements
Appear as glowing sheets or dancing waves
Aurorae are produced by the collision of charged particles from Earth's magnetosphere, mostly electrons but also protons and heavier particles, with atoms and molecules of Earth's upper atmosphere (at altitudes above 80 km (50 miles)). The particles have energies of 1 to 100 keV. They originate from the Sun and arrive at the vicinity of Earth in the relatively low-energy solar wind. When the trapped magnetic field of the solar wind is favourably oriented (principally southwards) it connects with Earth's magnetic field, and solar particles enter the magnetosphere and are swept to the magnetotail. Further magnetic reconnection accelerates the particles towards Earth.
The collisions in the atmosphere electrically excite electrons to take quantum leaps (a mechanism in which the electron's kinetic energy is converted to visible light); and molecules in the upper atmosphere. The excitation energy can be lost by light emission or collisions. Most aurorae are green and red emissions from atomic oxygen. Molecular nitrogen and nitrogen ions produce some low level red (pink) and very high blue/violet aurorae. The light blue and green colors are produced by ionic nitrogen and the neutral helium gives off the purple colour whereas Neon is responsible for the rare orange flares with the rippled edges. Different gasses interacting with the upper atmosphere will produce different colors, caused by the different compounds of oxygen and nitrogen. The level of solar wind activity from the Sun can also influence the color of the aurorae.
Grand Canyon
The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long
The width ranges from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km)
The depth is over one mile (1.83 km)
Majority is housed within Grand Canyon National Park
The Grand Canyon is a massive gorge located in the state of Arizona in the United States, and was created by the Colorado River. Although not the steepest nor the longest canyon in the world, the Grand Canyon is recognized as a natural wonder because of the overall scale and size combined with the beautifully colored landscape.
Paricutin Volcano
A cinder cone volcano
Official height varies reported as 9,101 feet (2,774 meters) or 10,397 feet (3,000 meters)
Last erupted in 1952
Youngest in America and birth witnessed by a human
The volcano began as a fissure in a cornfield owned by P'urhépecha farmer Dionisio Pulido on February 20, 1943. Pulido, his wife, and their son all witnessed the initial eruption of ash and stones first-hand as they plowed the field. The volcano grew quickly, reaching five stories tall in just a week, and it could be seen from afar in a month. Much of the volcano's growth occurred during its first year, while it was still in the explosive pyroclastic phase. Nearby villages Paricutín (after which the volcano was named) and San Juan Parangaricutiro were both buried in lava and ash; the residents relocated to vacant land nearby.
Victoria Falls
called Mosi-oa-Tunya meaning “smoke that thunders.”
Largest waterfall based on width and height
One mile wide (1.7 km) and 360 feet high (108 meters)
Two national parks (Zambia) and (Zimbabwe) protect the falls
Victoria Falls is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the borders of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River serves as the fall's water source. With the collective height and width of the falls, it is attributed as the largest sheet of falling water in the world. The name Victoria Falls was given by the Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone.
Great Barrier Reef
Largest coral reef system in the world
Consists of over 2,900 separate reefs
Stretches over 1,600 miles (2,600 km)
Can be seen from outer space
The 133,000 square miles (344,000 km) includes 900 islands
The great barrier reef is the world’
s largest individual formation created by living organisms. As the largest coral reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef includes over 900 islands, over 2,900 separate reefs, and supports one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world.
The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia.
Mount Everest
Highest (above sea level) mountain in the world, represents the highest spot on the earth's surface
Summit reaches a peak of 29,029 feet (8,848 m)
Located in the Himalaya mountains on the border between Nepal and Tibet
Also known as Chomolungma
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro
Located around Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Surrounded by unique mountains and formations
Rio de Janeiro translates "river of January" in Portuguese
The Harbour of Rio de Janeiro is located in Brazil and was created by erosion from the Atlantic Ocean. The Harbour is surrounded by gorgeous mountains that include Sugar Loaf at 1,296 feet (395 m), Corcovado Peak at 2,31
Question: Where or what are some of your Natural Wonders of the World? Yahoo!News has a story from LiveScience.com posted today about Eight new natural wonders named. Look at theirs and then share yours with us!
Answer: I have had the privilege of being in the military and serving in some interesting and remote corners of the world. Two such places were Vietnam and Alaska. Each place had things in the sky that were very beautiful and rare.
In Alaska, a combination of very low temperatures (-15F), nearness of the North magnetic Pole, and solar storms cause the northern lights. As an light arctic infantryman, I was able to get "up front and personal" with the Alaskan wilderness. That in it self was a natural wonder, but one night the combination of temperature, the magnetic field, and a powerful solar storm evoked a set of multi-colored shimmering "Curtains" of Northern lights. Not the usual pale green ones, but brilliant prism blue, red, green, white curved curtains. These curtains shifted and danced from one side horizon to the other flashing on and off. As they did so they "sang" with a humming sound. The other soldiers and I came out of our arctic tents and stared at the sky and all we could say was "Oh wow man!!" like a bunch of stoned hippies. Which I suspect some of my comrades in arms were LOL. Since at that time you could legally possess pot outside the base.
In Vietnam, I served in the Navy as a gunnersmate on a rivergunboat. We patrolled many of the over 5000 miles of rivers, canals, and creeks that made up the Mekong Delta through which the NVA tried to move troops and supplies to over throw the ARVN government. By the time I got there in Mid 1969 the VC had pretty much ceased to exist. Anyway, we split up our day into "watches when we were moving long distances or we were setting up a check point to pull over large river craft for weapons etc. I usually ended up with the early morning and early evening watch. This entailed steering the boat and listening to the radios and waking the rest of the crew if needed. Vietnam is part of the "ring of fire" or at least on the edge of it. So the air is filled the chemicals that come from the volcanoes in the ring of fire. These chemical produce brilliant pink, red, orange, and all variations there of in Vietnam's sunrises and sunsets. So my early evening and early morning watches, on non cloudy days in the dry season, were graced with some really awesome sunrises and sunsets which lit the river AND the sky where you often could not tell were one began and where one ended. For just a moment, you could forget the war- nods and smiles remembering.

The white cliffs of Dover.
The Severn bore.
Snowdon.
Lulworth cove
High force waterfall, Teesdale
Fingal's cave, Staffa (the other end of the giants causeway!)

Question: What are some of the best areas of the Everglades to visit? Or other amazing natural wonders in south Florida? Will be visiting Orlando and Miami areas and would like sight seeing suggestions. Prefer self-guided and off-the-beaten-path kind of things. We've already seen Fakahatchee Strand and the rookery.
Answer: Make the drive down to Flamingo, FL (SW of Homestead). The drive takes you into the wild heart of the Everglades (1st link). Then make sure you take the 'Loop Road' (2nd link). And if you do the Loop Road, then you'll be going by Everglades City: make the drive in and stay a night.
The most amazing natural wonder in all of Florida is the Florida Keys. Take the drive down to Key West, and the scenery will take your breath away. Google-search these words: Bahia Honda State Park.
