New Foods
Question: How do I start entering new foods to my daughter? My daughter is 7 months old and I was starting to feed her the baby food (carrots) I was doing that for a week and now I am going to start doing it with some other kind of food. I just got a new doctor and she told me to do it every 3 days so I she will be able to try a bunch of new foods before she is 9 months old. What is the correct food for giving her new foods (baby food) Thanks
Answer: I was told every 3-4 days. That way, you can start switching foods up and not give her the same food everyday for long.
Question: How can my parents and I get my little brother to try new foods? My 12 year old bro is very picky and really skinny and he won't try new foods. We've tried everything. We showed him the food pyramid and explained it to him, offered him rewards for tried food and some other stuff and he just won't try anything. Does anyone know what we should do? We're really worried about him.
Answer: You take choice out of the equation and make him eat them.
Question: I need a good website about new foods invented in America between 1900 and 1941? I'm doing a history paper on new foods that were invented between 1900 and 1941. Anyone know of a good website? Thanks!

Who can resist Marshmallow Fluff?
http://www.marshmallowfluff.com/pages/history1.html
"""On May 14, 1920, a small article appeared in the Lynn, Massachusetts, Daily Evening Item announcing that two young men, H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower, both graduates of Swampscott High and veterans of the United States Infantry in World War I, had formed a partnership in the manufacture of Marshmallow Fluff. The actual date that they started working together is hard to pin down, because they had been making candies together before they started making Fluff. The company numbered two men in those days, and they started out cooking their confections in the kitchen at night and selling them door to door in the daytime.
As Durkee wrote in 1930: "Ten years ago we started out with one barrel of sugar (at 28 cents per pound) a few tin cans: two spoons: one second hand Ford, and no customers, but plenty of prospects. Today (after a short span of only ten years) we have thru the fine cooperation of the wholesale grocers, the largest distribution of marshmallow cream in New England, and no Ford."
The origins of Marshmallow Fluff actually go back to 1917. Before WWI, a Sommerville MA man named Archibald Query had been making it in his kitchen and selling it door to door, but wartime shortages had forced him to close down. By the time the war was over, Mr Query had other work and was uninterested in restarting his business, but he was willing to sell the formula. Durkee and Mower pooled their saving and bought it for five hundred dollars. Having just returned from France, they punningly renamed their product "Toot Sweet Marshmallow Fluff" but "Toot Sweet" didn't stay on the label for long. The situation of "no customers, but plenty of prospects" didn't last long either. An early receipt still in the company's scrap books records the sale in April, 1920 of three one gallon cans to a vacation lodge in New Hampshire. The price at the time was $1.00 a gallon! The door to door trade gained a reputation among local housewives that eventually placed Fluff onto local grocers shelves. Retail trade spread from there to the point where in 1927 they were advertising prominently in Boston newspapers.
In 1929 they moved to a factory on Brookline Street in East Lynn, more than tripling their floor space to 10,000 square feet. At this point, they also hired four new employees, bringing their numbers to ten. They also merged with the Cream of Chocolate Company, makers of Rich's instant Sweet Milk Cocoa, and Durkee-Mower entered the Hot Chocolate business. Rich's Instant Sweet Milk Cocoa was too long a name for shoppers to be expected to remember easily, so in 1937 the name was shortened to simply Sweeco, and made more prominent on the label. The name and label change was backed up by a large newspaper advertising campaign, and the product's sales increased rapidly. Durkee-Mower continued to make Sweeco until 1962.
Durkee-Mower became a pioneer in radio advertising when in 1930 they began to sponsor the weekly "Flufferettes" radio show on the Yankee radio network, which included twenty-one stations broadcasting to all of New England. The fifteen minute show, aired on Sunday evenings just before Jack Benny, included live music and comedy skits, and served as a steppingstone to national recognition for a number of talented performers. The show continued through the late forties."""

Question: How to get kids to try new foods? My 7 and 5yr old will not eat any veggie except for canned corn. When they were both younger like 1-3yrs. they would eat peas, mashed potatoes, butterbeans, green beans, english peas, but now they won't eat those anymore. How do get them to start eat more veggies and maybe trying some new ones? My little girl told me she won't try anything new , that goes for all foods not just veggies, unless it smells good to her.
Answer: make food fun
let them help in the buying and preparation
at 5 & 7 years old they are old enough to help in the kitchen,
make an occasion out of it, tell them you are planning a dinner party, for daddy, or a grandparent, it doesnt need to be anything grand, and get them to help you, kids are proud when they make something, they will try something they have made themselves
ok you cant do that every night but once they get started they will be more curious
take them out and buy a childrens vegetarian cookbook, they can choose what recipes they make themselves and because its a vegetarian one the recipes will have lots of vegetables in them
present their food, on nice plates, bowls etc, children eat with their eyes, if it looks good they will try it
theres lots of things you can do,
Question: Can i retrain myself to like new foods? I'm a very fussy eater, i don't like salad, tomato's or cucumber or anything like that, i don't even like pizza. I don't like melted cheese on the pizza and the fact that it has tomato's on it. I can't eat lasagna and it's ruining my social life. If i ever go out for a meal i always have to get jacket potato or sausage and chips, Can i retrain myself to like new foods? Please help.
Answer: Yes, I didn't eat vegetables until I was 23. I believe it's a question of trying food with an open mind, focusing in the taste and the texture.
Don't expect too much, you'll find some foods you'll like, some you definitely won't (mine is eggs with runny yolks) and some although you'll be able to eat and tolerate, you'll feel indiferent to them. These last foods, you won't include them in your everyday diet, but you'll be able to eat them if you ever come across at a dinner party or such, which is quite useful.
Question: How do you get a picky almost 14 month old to try new foods? It seems like no matter how many times we try to offer new kind of foods (veggies for example) she just won't have it! I don't want to raise a picky eater so I'm looking to nip this in the bud.
Answer: My daughter is a picky eater too, she's always hated baby food (except for the Stage 2 meats). So I've pretty much given up on that and feed her what I'm eating. Her favorites are peas, spinach (especially in artichoke dip), potatoes, corn, bell peppers and cucumbers.
I don't bother making her own special meals, she eats what I eat and she likes it. I however, can't make her own plate/bowl because she won't eat it....however if it's off my plate she loves it. Babies can be so silly!
Question: Any ideas on how to get my kids to try new foods? My kids, 2 and 3 1/2, are picky, and just refuse new foods. I try to introduce new things, but they usually end up in the garbage. My son would rather starve then try something new. They will eat- apples(and apple sauce), chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese, speggetti, corn and chicken. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get them to at least try other things?
Answer: people usually say if u sit down with them and they see u eating it they will usually eat it too. sometimes they dont like whats on there plate, but they like your plate when its exactly the same, so u could try letting them help themselves off your plate
Question: Why does my son gag and almost throw up every time he tries new foods? I have a 4 year old that's always been a picky eater. Now that he's at the age to reason with him a bit, we've been introducing new foods into his diet. Today, we had him try macaroni and cheese at Boston Market, and he literally gagged three times on one small piece and almost threw up. What gives? Is this just his psyche that makes him gag because he thinks it's gross (which is what he says)? Help!
Answer: My son does the same thing with any pasta I've tried giving him, and trust me, we have pasta a million different ways each month. We are a huge pasta and potato family. He doesn't like potatoes either. He gets both every time we have it (which is at least once a day). We've tried different shaped noodles, from different places, with different sauces, etc. Same with potatoes.........
I can't complain though, he will eat brocolli, corn, peas, green beans, carrots.....all raw.
Question: Help with trying new foods while coping with Eating Disorder? I keep eating the same foods everyday and feel like I'm not healthy. Does anyone have tips for how to add new foods? I automatically buy and eat the same thing. I have an eating disorder so this may play into it, but I really do want to eat different things.
I keep eating egg whites, veggies, and fruit all the time. Fats are a few almonds a day and half a slice of cheese.
Answer: I had an ED for a long time and I definitely understand where you come from. I felt guilty about most foods so I wouldn't eat them. Though when I wanted to try something new, going to a play like Whole Foods was always a good choice. There's plenty of organic products there that wont make you feel so guilty about eating. Plus they have premade foods as well, such as vegetarian/vegan chili and soups and sandwiches...it's great. Best of luck to you. I really mean that. xox
Question: how can i introduce new foods to my birds? i try to give them new foods but they act as if there afraid of it.
Answer: Introduce a little at a time...and even if they eat it, you can't change the diet (by too much of another food) too much/quickly or you can get them sick..........
Question: how to introduce new foods into a bland diet? Been eating a pretty standard (i.e. boring & bland) diet for the last 3-4 years (dont ask). Went to a doctor and found out that I'm not getting all the food nutrients I need and need to add some variety to my diet...
Sounds easy right? Nope... Because my system is so used to certain foods, whenever I add anything new, I have digestive issues (sometimes painful).
Its not that I am allergic to these foods, but my system has gotten so used to the same stuff that it freaks out if I add things..
How can i break new foods into my diet with the least possible suffering?
Digestive enzymes... Is that like Lact-aid for dairy products or is there one "magic" one that takes care of all the enzymes you need? How would i know which enzymes to take? The lact-aid stuff didnt work for me years ago with a small slice of pizza, so I'm skeptical about them...
Thanx for the answers! Definitely moving slowly and not introducing many things at once is a great idea..
Answer: Small amounts are the key to start. If you eat a small amount, you suffer a small amount, if you eat a large amount you suffer a large amount.
Also be aware of processed foods and condiments. Ranch dressing has a TON of stuff in it, including MSG. Eliminating sauces and dressings from foods may have a bigger result than you realize. Be extra careful with restaurant food! They are notorious for using sauces and marinades with all kinds of ingredients you wouldn't expect! You might do fine with barbecue ribs untill you go to a place that adds "liquid smoke" for example.
There is also a question of how your stomach breaks down these foods. Having been on a restricted diet you may have lost some of the basic healthy bacteria and enzymes that help us digest food. Go to your local health food store and ask about digestive enzymes. This isn't something you necessarily need to take forever, just to jump start your digestion until it regains functionality. If you have always had this problem there is always the chance that you are incapable of making certain enzymes.
I would be interested to know if this is stomach pain, intestinal pain, or some other, and what kinds of foods work for you. It would certainly help narrow down exactly what might be causing your difficulty.
Good Luck!
Question: How do I encourage my cockatiel to try new foods? My cockatiel is a really picky eater and ignores the fruit and veggies I put in his food dish. I even tried hanging them around the cage but he ignores these too. He will only try something if he sees me eating it first but then I have to hand feed it to him and if I later put the same food in his dish he throws it on to the cage floor and ignores it. How can I encourage him to eat new things without my hand feeding him everything?
Answer: My African Grey does the same thing. She won't eat fruits and veggies on her own in her cage. She will eat them if I put her on her little portable perch and put that on the dinner table. She will eat veggies and whatever I give her so long as I am also eating (what she perceives to be the same thing)
You may just be stuck with the hand feeding. Its not that big a deal though since it sounds like you already spend lots of time with the bird :-)
Question: How do you get a strong-willed child to try new foods? My son is 6 and he will eat: pudding, yogurt, chips, fries and bacon. That's it. He drinks tons of milk. I have tried every way I can think of to get him to try new foods and he just won't do it. Short of holding him down and shoving the food in his mouth, which I DON'T do, by the way, there is just no way to get him to try foods. He flatly refuses: gentle requests, bargaining, taking away priveledges, not letting him leave the table until he's tried a bite of food, not giving him anything else to eat (he skipped 2 meals in a row and I just can't send him to school hungry!!!) Lately, he has been very constipated. I told him this is because he won't eat fruits, breads or vegetables and said I wanted him to at least eat apple sauce. I need some advice from parents of strong-willed kids only. If you don't have one, no offense, but you do not know what I'm dealing with here. I have another child who will try new foods. He's not strong-willed. My 6 year old is different.
Answer: It does not sound like he is going to starve to death. I had a son that would only eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I told the doctor about it and he laughed and said buy healthy bread and give him a multivitamin. He would get over it. The main thing he warned me about was not letting it become a "power struggle" or a control factor in the relationship. So, every night at dinner, I set a place for everyone else, and at his plate, he got a peanut butter sandwich (and for breakfast and for lunch). And we talked quite casually about what we liked and did not like. Eventually, curiosity won out (and it did not take too long! just a week or two). However, I did not let him fill up on sweet yogurt, pudding and the like. He could have something like that after dinner for dessert just like everyone else. My old family doctor was wise about this one. It really had become a way of control. So, try putting his plate out at every meal so it looks alike - a glass of milk, a slice of bacon, a few fries (and a multivitamin). It is not the healthiest, but it will get old soon. His real entertainment has been the power struggle. The message he will soon get is that winning this kind of fight is not so fun!
Question: why do you think people are unwilling to try new foods? I have to do an essay for my Culinary Tech II class about why people are unwilling to try new foods. I need three to five reasons, and I honestly can't even think of three, any ideas?
Answer: 1. scared of being allergic to something that the body is not used to
2. they might hate the taste
3. when trying new spicy foods, they might be worried it's too spicy for them
4. scared of getting food poisoning
5. if they are vegans, vegetarians, raw foodists, or any other diet that exempts certain ingredients from their normal meals, they might be scared to eat something that they have never heard of before since it might contain a little meat in it (which doesn't go along with the vegan/vegetarian diet) or something that's cooked (which doesn't go along with the raw food diet), etc...
Question: My 2 1/2 year old is a very picky eater!!! How did you get your toddler to be open to trying new foods? My 2 1/2 year old is not big on veggies. She eats corn, tomatoes, butter beans (sometimes), but other than that, there are not too many veggies I can get her to eat. It doesn't help that my husband won't touch a vegetable (he considers mashed potatoes and mac n cheese veggies). Is there any way I can encourage her to try new foods? Right now, I'm settling for sneaking veggies into her (cooking carrots and mashing them up in spaghetti sauce, for example). But, I want her to "openly" eat veggies. Any advice?
Answer: My 8 yrs old now doesn't like eatting veggies, but he knows that if he doesn't then he can't grow up to be a strong man. We play the name your veggies game. He gets blindfolded and fed by me and he tries to guess what he's tasting. I did this even with my nephew (then he was 7yrs. (now 22yrs). That's a game that's been passed down from my grandmother. Try it. It just might do the trick.
Question: Do you like to try new foods? Are you brave and willing to try new, often exotic and strange foods, or do you like to stick with what you're already accustomed to?
Answer: I'm usually better at trying new foods if I DON'T know what's in them first.
