Question: How many strokes/Heart attacks happen in people with normal Cholesterol and blood pressure levels? I understand people with High cholesterol or high blood pressure have a much increased chance of having a stroke or heart attack, but how many people have strokes/heart attacks that have completely normal blood pressure levels and normal cholesterol levels? In percentages...
Answer: "Michael M" is a person with no medical/scientific training who posts inaccurate statements about cholesterol & heart disease.
Cholesterol is ONE factor in heart disease, not the only one.
When I did cardiology, we would sometimes see these patients come in with an MI. We'd often send a blood sample off for NMR (nuclear spectography) for particle size analysis.
Question: Does it always mean that if u have a normal blood pressure, u also have a normal cholesterol? My husband has a 104/78 blood pressure but not sure if he has more bad cholesterol than good ones. He just wants to believe that as long as he has a normal blood pressure, it doesnt bother him at all
Answer: blood pressure and serum cholesterol are two entirely different things regulated by entirely different internal body mechanisms. along with many other things both are risk factors for the development of heart disease and the risk posed by one risk factor is not diminished by the absence of another.
Question: what is the normal cholesterol rate for a 55yr old woman? ive got a letter fron hospital to say my cholesterol was 5.4mmol/i is that normal or to high dont understand it
Answer: I'm from Texas, USA so the means of measure (the numbers) is different from what I am used to seeing. However, I searched "High Cholesterol in the UK". I found one site that explains a good deal about it along with levels that are generally regarded as desirable. They are:
- Total cholesterol (TC) - 5.0 mmol/l or less. However, about 2 in 3 adults in the UK have a total cholesterol level of 5.0 mmol/l or above.
- Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol after an overnight fast: 3.0 mmol/l or less.
- High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol: 1.2 mmol/l or more.
- TC/HDL ratio: 4.5 or less. That is, your total cholesterol divided by your HDL cholesterol. This reflects the fact that for any given total cholesterol level, the more HDL, the better.
Information on assessing (calculating) your cardiovascular health risk is included.

Question: What should be the normal range for Cholesterol without fasting? I am 37 years male, 2 days before i have done my cholesterol testing without fasting, test has taken without fasting. The result showing like - Total Cholestorl 221,
LDL Cholestrol 145.8
i know this should be taken overnight fasting, doctor told me this is normal,is it normal?what are food to be avoided to decrease LDL cholesterol level?what should be range of cholesterol test without fasting?
Answer: Ideal cholesterol level: Below 200 mg / dL
Borderline cholesterol level: 200-240 mg / dL
High cholesterol level: above 240 mg / dL
First you have to fast at least 12-14 hours before test....so your value is normal ....but i recommended to make anther test while you are fasting...
There is no range of cholesterol without fasting..i mean if you have heavy meal rich of fat...is different that meal with less fat.
About the food that decrease LDL:
You don't need to reduce your food intake (unless you are overweight) in a diet for lowering cholesterol levels, all you need to do is to substitute certain foods for more healthy ones.
Our bodies make too much cholesterol when we eat too much saturated fat in our diet. Saturated fat is the kind of fat found in animal-based foods such as meat and dairy products.
We also get some cholesterol directly from animal-based foods in our diet such as meat, eggs, and dairy products. Plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains do not contain cholesterol. Due to the high saturated fat content of the average diet, more than one-half of American adults have blood cholesterol levels that are too high.

Question: what is a normal cholesterol level for a 19 year old girl? and any ideas to lower a level that is too high?
Answer: Desirable : A cholesterol below 200 mg/dL (5.18 mmol/L) is considered desirable and reflects a low risk of heart disease.
Borderline high: A cholesterol of 200 to 240 mg/dL (5.18 to 6.22 mmol/L) is considered to reflect moderate risk. Your doctor may decide to order a lipid profile to see if your high cholesterol is bad cholesterol (high LDL) or good cholesterol (high HDL). Depending on the results of the lipid profile (and any other risk factors you may have) your doctor will decide what to do.
High Risk: A cholesterol above 240 mg/dL (6.22 mmol/L) is considered high risk. Your doctor may order a lipid profile (as well as other tests) to try to determine the cause of your high cholesterol. Once the cause is known, an appropriate treatment will be prescribed.
There is some debate about whether very low cholesterol is bad. Low cholesterol (less than 100 mg/dL (2.59 mmol/L)) is often seen when there is an existing problem like malnutrition, liver disease, or cancer. However there is no evidence that low cholesterol causes any of these problems.
Cholesterol should be measured when a person is healthy. Blood cholesterol is temporarily low during acute illness, immediately following a heart attack, or during stress (like from surgery or an accident). You should wait at least 6 weeks after any illness to have cholesterol measured. Some drugs that are known to increase cholesterol levels include anabolic steroids, beta blockers, epinephrine, oral contraceptives, and vitamin D.
Good luck
