Plenty Of Fluids
Question: How does plenty of fluids help you get over a cold? How much fluids are they talking about? Water and Juice?
Answer: Fluids don't really help you get over a cold, they just help you feel more comfortable during it. My Mom always used to say, "A cold lasts about 14 days if you treat it, about 2 weeks if you don't." The premise being that colds are gonna last as long as they're gonna last. All you can do is manage the symptoms as best as you can. Fluids, yes water and juice (clear fluids, not milk, etc. so much) work by thinning out the mucous that is clogging your sinuses, nose, etc. and get it flowing OUT. It also helps keep fever down by decreasing blood temperature (assuming cold fluids). Both will help you the FEEL better.
Question: Why is it important to drink plenty of fluids when you are ill? I have a cold and dont feel that well. My mum keeps telling me to drink lots of water.
I dont understand how it will help though!
Answer: When you are ill, your antibodies kill the germs or absorb the virus cells and then need to be flushed out of your body to avoid clogging you up with dead cells.
Drinking a lot of fluids helps your body clear out the old dead cells, by making you go to the loo alot.
Question: When doctors tell you to drink plenty of fluids, does this mean only water? or can you drink fizzy drinks also.
Answer: When a Dr. tells you to drink plenty of fluids, he's telling you to drink things that will be beneficial to you like water, 100% no sugar added juices, and even sports drinks like Gatorade or Powerade. Not soda, coffee, Kool- Aid, or other sugar and caffeine packed drinks.
Question: When your Sick with a cold and your doctor says drink Plenty of fluids. How much is considered Plenty of fluid
Answer: Keep drinking all day. When I have a cold/flu, I make a huge pot of chicken soup with lots of broth, garlic, vegetables and add chicken last. I just keep eating/drinking bowls of soup all day as well drinking water or tea.
The reason you need to drink so much fluids is because your body is forming mucous in order to carry out the dead germs & toxins out of your body and if you don't have enough liquids, you will dry out. The more, the better and the faster you recover.
Question: What can I do to recover from bronchitis faster aside from drinking plenty of fluids and resting?
Answer: You should avoid caffeinated coffee, tea and cola. They make you lose more fluids than you gain. Stay clear of cigarette smoke. Eat chicken soup or drink hot tea to relieve chest congestion. Try eating hot, spicy foods such as hot peppers or curry to thin the mucus; plug in the vaporizor.
Question: Drink plenty of fluids when you've got a cold? Why are people advised to stay hydrated when they've got a cold? Does it help us recover faster or is it mainly because we lose lots of fluid so we're just trying to replenish what we've lost?
Answer: It's mainly because you lose more fluids when you are ill. When running a fever, your body utilizes more energy and expels more water through insensible losses (through sweat and breath). As such you will become dehydrated, making the body struggle to heal itself. This is especially important with the flu or a stomach virus where you can potentially become dehydrated enough to require hospitalization.
