Question: Anyone successfully used Policosanol to lower their cholesterol by taking it with their evening meal? Taking it in the evening is the best way from studies shown (because the liver's cholesterol production is highest during the night.)
Answer: Ignore Ashley. He posts pseudo science under multiple names and doesn't handle criticism well.
Question: Anyone know about or use policosanol for lowering cholesterol?
Answer: Policosanol is a mixture of aliphatic alcohols that have been isolated from sugar cane wax. According to a review article in The American Heart Journal, Feb. 2002, "at doses of 10 to 20 mg per day, policosanol lowers total cholesterol by 17% to 21% and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 21% to 29% and raises high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL - the good cholesterol) by 8% to 15%." They go further and state: "Daily doses of 10 mg of policosanol have been shown to be equally effective in lowering total or LDL cholesterol as the same dose of simvastatin or pravastatin." They also report on its safety: "At dosages up to 20 mg per day, policosanol is safe and well tolerated, as studies of >3 years of therapy indicate."
These researchers conclude with: "Policosanol seems to be a very promising phytochemical alternative to classic lipid-lowering agents such as the statins...".
The key points in this major review article are:
1) Policosanol is effective and about as effective as some prescription drugs
2) Policosanol is safe.
Point two is especially important because the statin drugs have serious (even life-threatening) risks associated with their use.
Another important point (especially considering the out-of-control costs of health care) Policosanols are a lot less expensive than the prescription drugs.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Best wishes.

Question: Policosanol - useless or not? Whom should we believe? Policosanol is a natural medicine derived from sugar cane, produced in Cuba, which is broadly advertised in many countries as a highly efficient against atherosclerosis. Numerous studies from Cuba support the effectiveness of policosanol, which has been confirmed also by a large trial in Moscow. However, independent verification from the Netherlands and Germany have demonstrated that sugar-cane derived policosanol is useless.

Answer: A reputable journal concluded that it was effective.

Question: What Is Policosanol?
Answer: Hi: The sources I listed down at the bottom are links I got from google. Policosanol is also known as octacosanol. Octacosanol is sometimes alleged to enhance endurance for athletes. One source for octacosanol is wheat germ oil. This stuff does not sound too promising, but that is for you to decide if you want to check the links.
I think the info below is from altmedicine.about.com.
Policosanol has been touted as a dietary supplement that can lower cholesterol as well as statin drugs, without the side effects. Studies indicate that it works by inhibiting cholesterol formation in the liver.
However, almost all of the 80+ double-blind studies on sugarcane policosanol were conducted by a single research group in Cuba that owns the policosanol patent.
Question: foods that contain policosanol?
Answer: Policosanol is a unique natural product derived from sugar cane wax and beeswax. I know of no food-dervied sources of this cholesterol-lowering product.
Question: Is Lipitor really as bad as blogs suggest? High Cholesterol runs in my family and mine is up as well now, I was put on Lipitor and it worked within 3 weeks, I became "Normal" then i read all these posts on the net about Lipitor and thought Geez!! I'm gonna go off it and try all the healthy stuff, I went on Fish Oil, six 1500 dosages a day, I ate Salmon three times a week, plenty of veg etc, even Policosanol and Co-Enzyme Q10 now for six months and went to the doc yesterday for a blood test and my Cholesterol has gone up again, I couldn't believe it. The Doctor said that its in my genes cos my whole family has Cholesterol probs. He's obviously right, now he has prescribed me 20 mg Lipitor again, it worked last time so I'm sure it will work again but why do people say its bad for you? I virtually have no choice its either high Cholesterol or Lipitor? The so-called correct diet option doesn't work, neither dies the fish oil or any other supplement, cos I tried it. I know people on Liptor and they say they are Fine so why is there so much bad press? if there is a Doctor out there please tell me WHY??????
Answer: There are alarming stories out there about the Statins...I was wary of taking the Crestor I was prescribed too. Once I saw the amazing results though I stopped worrying. I havent had any bad side effects and if you havent either then I think you have no need to be worried. Trust your doctor and stay healthy. Go read some good stories about Lipitor then maybe you will feel more confident...your own good results should also help you feel more confident with it.
Question: Is policosanol good to lower bad cholestrol? im taking some pills i bought, its been about a week i got my next cholestrol check in about 5 months..im also on crestor 10mg
Answer: Policosanol or polycosanol
as it's also known as, is a product derived from both sugar cane and rice bran. Numerous studies have been conducted confirming that it actually lowers bad cholesterol (LDL) while also raising good cholesterol (HDL). It is also much safer than statin drugs as statin drugs actually strip the body of the vital COQ10 compound essential to so many metabolic processes -- this is important to know.
