Salmon Oil
Question: How do I store Salmon oil, cod liver oil, and vitamin E? My Boss has some salmon oil, cod liver oil, and vitamin E. It is all opened, and she has never refrigerated them. They have been stored in a cool dark place. Have they already lost their potency? What should she do with them? Are they still usable if she puts them in the fridge today?
Answer: They are probably OK if in capsules. Oils oxidize when exposed to air (opened bottles). But if in capsules, they are fine in a cool, dark place (room temperature, not freezing).
With all these products, be sure not to expose them to light.
Question: Is it harmful for me to take salmon oil supplements? I am a 13 (nearly 14) year old girl and I have some 1000mg salmon oil tablets because I hear taking them regularly are good for your health. What are the benefits, and is it harmful to me in any way? Any side effects? Is 1000 mg too much? Thanks!
Answer: 1000 mg may be too much at first. Salmon contains many healthy vitamens that strengthen hair, smooth skin, and aid in digestion. But too much can cause stomach aches, lead to the growth of heliobacter pyloris (stomach ulcers), and diarrhea. So cut the 1000 mg pill in half and try that for a week to figure out how your body digests it. Also it makes your feces smell funny and may turn a light color due to the reaction with bacteria lining your intestinal lumen and duodendum.
Question: Is salmon oil for dogs safe for human consumption? I know, it sounds like a stupid question but would it be safe to do so instead of taking omega-3 salmon/fish/flax oil capsules?
Answer: It should be fine for human. But instead of buying salmon oil for dogs, why don't you buy a fit-for-human salmon oil and share it with your dog? And when you buy salmon oil, I suggest buying one extracted from sustainable wild salmon, like Alaskan salmon, as they usually yield better quality fish oil than farmed salmon. It's also important to know how the salmon oil is extracted too. Highly purified fish oil has to go through complex distillation to remove impurities. But this process also removes most of the important nutrients present in the fish oil, such as natural occurring vitamin D, other omega-3 fats and astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant. But wild salmon oil usually don't require complex distillation as they are naturally low in contaminants like heavy metals. So, wild salmon oil retains more natural nutrients. I think wild salmon oil from New Chapter fits the bill quite well.
BTW, the omega-3 fats in flax seed oil and the omega-3 fats in fish oil are different. Those in flax seed oil are mainly ALA, while those in fish oils are EPA and DHA. Only less than 1 percent of ALA is converted to EPA and DHA in our body. So if you're looking for EPA and DHA, better go with wild salmon oil.

Question: Where in india can i find Wild Salmon Oil for my cat ? Where in india can i find Wild Salmon Oil for my cat ?
I cannot locate it anywhere among indian drugs or vitamins etc...
Even the Groceries, Pharmacies, Doctors & wherever i tried, says that they have never even heard of it.....
Any Brand name/Product name except that Amway one ?
Answer: I know about the recipe you are making for your cat so I'll address the purpose of the wild salmon oil.
This oil should not be considered absolutely essential to preparing a nutritious diet for your cat. The reason it is included in many recipes is because it contains a large amount of the n-3(omega-3) fatty acids EPA and DHA. These fatty acids are believed to confer many health benefits (to humans and cats alike).
If cats are like humans in this respect they can convert a-linolenic acid to n-3 fatty acids. At least with humans, this conversion may be inefficient especially if a large amount of n-6 fatty acids are present in the diet.
Natural direct sources are cold-water top-of-the-food-chain fish that eat other fish that eat the plankton that contain.....
Some of these are salmon, wild, not farmed, sardines, mackeral and others. Cod liver oil is another source but this has the potential to cause vitamins A and D toxicity over time because so much of those vitamins are concentrated in the liver.
If you cannot find the oil, make the cat food without it, substitute canned mackeral, sardines, salmon if you can find them unsalted or use a very small amount of fresh, refrigerated cod liver oil.
Just 1 teaspoon or 5ml of cod liver oil contains 100% of the A and probably D requirements for an adult male human so you can imagine how this would need to be scaled down for a cat if her requirements are propotional to ours (maybe not at all).
I hope this clarifies the issue for you.
I will continue to look online but I am in the US and my search engine doesn't seem to like India. I type India and get US mail order companies! I'll update if I am more successful later.

Question: Salmon oil straight from the bottle or capsules? I've seen bottles of salmon oil at pet supply shops and the prices seem to be pretty reasonable. I give capsules. Which do you prefer and why? How long does it take for the oil to "go bad"? Also, why is there always rosemary in it?
Category fail: Food & Drink > Vegetarian & Vegan (VEGAN!!!)
Thanks.
@Kiwi: It's pretty obvious that this is in the dog section...
Answer: Would it be easier to squirt a bit on top of the kibble, or to have your dog swallow the pill? It's really up to you to decide which one you'd prefer, because neither has any significant advantage or disadvantage.. The soft gel capsules do last longer than the liquid, though, so that may be more convenient for you. (You can increase the shelf life by refrigerating it. You can also make it last longer by puncturing a vitamin E capsule and squeezing that into the bottle, if you get the liquid form of salmon oil.)
As for how long it takes to spoil, check the box/bottle. Some folks keep it for about six months, since that's how low olive oil is supposed to last. The bottle/box should specify an expiration date, though, and that expiration date is often only like a month away.
I've never actually seen salmon oil with rosemary, but it makes sense to use it as a natural preservative. Polyunsaturated fats like salmon oil go rancid pretty quickly, so they need all the preservative help they can get, you know?
Question: Fish Oil or Salmon Oil which is more beneficial? Tonight I bought Salmon Oil. What's the difference in these two oils?
Answer: It's generally the same, you want to check the DHA and EPA content, the higher the better. cheap caps will be 180/120mg. good ones can be over 500 each. try to get about 1500mg of each per day to see the full benefits of fish oil

Question: What is the difference between salmon oil, fish oil, and flax oil? I would like to find out what each one offers over the others...
Answer: Fish oils are fats found in fish, particularly fish which live in deep, cold water fish such as sardines, salmon, mackerel, cod, and tuna. Fish oil is thought to be healthful because it is composed of rich sources of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of the omega-3 type. The two most heavily researched fish oils are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Salmon oil would be considered fish oil although some companies choose to market it differently.
Flax seed oil comes from the Flax seed. This natural oil (also known as Linseed Oil) is highly recommended for the general well being and whole body nutrition and is considered to be nature's richest source of omega-3 fatty acids that are required for the health of almost all body systems.
Flax Seed Oil contains omega-6 and omega-9 essential fatty acids, B vitamins, potassium, lecithin, magnesium, fiber, protein, and zinc and also provides approximately 50% more omega-3 oils than what you could get from taking fish oil, minus that horrible "fishy" after taste.

Question: Which celebrity would you most like to cover in salmon oil and throw in a pit of hungry grizzly bears? You can't have Paris Hilton, I already soaked her in antelope blood and threw her in a pit of hungry lions.
Answer: Michael Jackson
Question: Salmon Oil vs. Regular Fish Oil? Which product is better for heart health? I was wondering if Salmon Oil offers more health benefits that just regualr fish oil?
Please, I realize that salmon is a fish. Just want to know if it's more beneficial.
Also, which would elevate mood more?
Answer: I don't think there is anyone who can answer this for you. There has not been ANY research to determine which would have greater benefit.
Question: Do I need to get a different salmon oil for my cats than what I've been feeding my dog? I've been giving it to my dog for this whole year and never even thought to ask the nutritionist at the store about the cats. I'd ask up there about the correct dosage for the cats before giving it to them but can they get the same thing or do they need a different kind? I just looked it up and never even realized it was something that cats also need.
Answer: You can probably use the same one. I would look over the bottle to see if it mentions anything about cats. If it doesn't, that still doesn't mean anything. Sometimes it's just all about marketing.
Look at the ingredients. Hopefully you've chosen a good oil with few ingredients, and preferably one that doesn't contain rosemary. If you have, regardless of what the bottle may say, it's probably just fine for your cat.
This is the research I did when it comes to fish oil:
Only Natural Pet Icelandic Salmon Oil (pump) (http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Only-Natural-Pet-Pure-Icelandic-Salmon...)
Good for hairballs, good for skin and coat.
Selection: You typically won't use human fish oils - at least not the ones in liquid form - because they have added citrus flavors to many of them. You don't want to use cod liver oil - at least not on a very regular basis - because it has too much vitamin a. Plain old fish oil or salmon oil is best. I prefer it in liquid form as opposed to capsules for ease of dispensing. You want it to say that they've done everything possible to remove mercury. I prefer one with the fewest additives, especially not rosemary. Or propyllgallate.
For ease of use, I prefer to buy it in liquid form in a squeeze bottle or pump.
Dosage: I give a squirt every day. It's not measured but probably comes to somewhere around 1/4 tsp.
