Shakes
Question: What exactly do protein shakes do to your body? I've been training for the past 23 days. Dieting & exercising. I am drinking protein shakes (recommended by my trainer) once a day. Besides boosting my metabolism, what exactly does a protein shake do to ones body?
Answer: im not being funny but are you a male or a female - its just hormones affect diffrent genders... ie if a female the protein benifits are that it will make you feel full, be used to tone up the muscles used when worked out and help you to loose body fat. if a male then is used more to gain muscle size due to a higher testosterone level in the body.
Question: Can you have the Shakes and bars during the first week of Induction on the Atkins Diet? Hi there!
I did Atkins a while ago and you couldnt have the shakes until later.
Well I saw on the website that you can have them but they didnt say how.
So can you have the Atkins shakes during the first phase, the induciton phase.
Rebekah
Answer: The bars & shakes stop weight loss in most people. Dr.Atkins was adamant that the bars & shakes were to be used for maintenance only but recommendations have changed since his death. I would suggest you stick with whole foods.
There is no reason to ever go off a low carb way of eating, you slowly re introduce carbs to your way of eating and as long as you don't exceed 9grams of carbs an hour (144 carbs a day) you won't trigger insulin (the fat storage hormone) no matter the calories. Most of us do low carb most of the time & if we cheat & slip back into low carb the next day. I still cheat with sugar occasionally. It's just not a regular part of my life (as it was preAtkins, 6 years ago, when I felt it controlled me & I had no control)
The rungs to reintroduction of carbs in 5 gram units - all available to very active people in as little as 11 weeks. Make sure you do them in order & you can skip a rung if you do not intend to include it in your permanent way of eating, such as the alcohol rung.:
* (minimum week 3 - maximum 25grams day) Acceptable vegetables, larger quantities
* (minimum week 4 - maximum 30grams day) Add 5grams Fresh cheese
* (minimum week 5 - maximum 35grams day) Add 5grams Nuts and seeds
* (minimum week 6 - maximum 40grams day) Add 5grams Berries
* (minimum week 7 - maximum 45grams day) Alcohol can be added if desired
* (minimum week 8 - maximum 50grams day) Add 5grams Legumes
* (minimum week 9 - maximum 55grams day) Add 5grams Other fruits
* (minimum week10 - maximum 60grams day) Add 5grams Starchy vegetables
* (minimum week11 - maximum 65grams day) Add 5grams Whole grains
If you are continuing to lose or maintain (whichever is goal) in week 12 and beyond, you continue to add 5grams a day per week til you reach your personal carb level.
Many people gain weight on high carb, then switch to low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb that they gain weight. (Isn't insanity defined as doing the exact same thing, in the exact same way and expecting different results??) Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar and maintain weight or health.
You will lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.
Your body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow your metabolism to compensate and store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering your calories, it will continue lowering that set point, til you can survive off nothing and store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of food.
Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) and exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.
The core of the Atkins program is converting your body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). You need to keep your fat levels at >65% of your calories, if you don't your body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).
Carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice, beans) trigger insulin (the ONLY fat storage hormone). Protein triggers the fat burning hormone glucagon.
High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger and unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase your muscle mass with high HGH levels.
Ground flax seed (2-4 Tbsp) 1/4 cup water, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min. to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle & nuke 2 min for daily fiber needs.
The first 2 weeks you can have several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce and celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers and more variety of vegetables thereafter add 5 grams per day additional (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) every week til you gain weight, then you subtract 10 carbs. That would give you your personal carb level (everyone is different and it depends on how active you are.) As long as you remain <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control, and shouldn't gain weight no matter the calories, because insulin the only fat storage hormone is not triggered.
Question: What would happen if someone only had protein shakes for a couple weeks? My friend thinks he can lose weight and stay healthy by only having protein shakes. He says theres carbs,calories, and protein all in the shakes.
I dont think its a good idea.
It almost seems like a crash diet.
What do u think?
Will he lose weight?
Is it healthy to only have protein shakes for a couple weeks to lose some weight?
Answer: i would say that there is nothing 'good' that can come from that. a protein shake is meant to be consumed as 1 meal replacement a day and/or directly after a workout to maintain new muscle developement. and thats it. also protein shakes have quite a few calories in them so you shouldnt consume more that 1 a day if you are not lifting weights or excercising. your body must have all essential vitamins and minerals everyday to stay healthy and lose weight. protein shakes dont have these elements to them so your body will be tired and starving itself. a good multi vitamin and a HEALTHY diet (not starving) are the best way for your body to lose weight. please remember that weight lose is not a joke or a crash corse. it can not be done safely in a few weeks and can cause permanent damage to vital organs. be smart and good luck
Question: Why centrifuge shakes first few seconds after start up? Everytime I use centrifuge in lab, when I start the centrifuge program it shakes and them settles down. Why?
Answer: I'm not a mechanic, but i'd say the bearings may be going bad in it. If it gets worse, a mechanic should check it out, don't you think? Good luck.
Question: What kind of shakes do you drink during the intervention period of the protein power diet? I can only find "supplement" protein shakes/powder. the only meal replacement shakes i find are shakes like slim fast, but those arent particularly high in protein... they are balanced meals replacements, meaning they have a considerable amount of carbs, fat, sugar, etc.... i need high protein shakes/powder, low in carbs, that works as a meal replacement. should i just get those protein powders from the GNC stores...? please help, im so confused.
Answer: If you simply want protein replacements, you can find several very good ones at Walmart. The last one I bought was about $14.00 for a large container, Whey protein (from milk) and had 20 grams of protein per serving. I have made shakes with double the amount of powder because I needed the extra protein after surgery. I also liked the Advant ( I think that's the name) brand of shakes and bars. They have only 1-2 gms of sugar and 21 grams of protein. If you want to compare brands and ingredients a good place is drugstore.com. They carry several different brands and also those made of soy (which I don't care for). I'm sure the GMC store could also help you out. Good Luck.
Question: What are the benefits of protein shakes? I want to start taking protein shakes for endurance. I'm not interested in building muscle so much as I am in building up my endurance. I do want to increase my muscle mass a little, but not so much because I am not a bodybuilder, only a black belt that is looking to increase my endurance. I heard about whey protein, but isn't that to increase muscle mass? What is the best protein shake for increasing endurance?
Answer: The big muscles come from your form of training. If you train isolation, you get big muscles that bulge. If you train in things like martial arts, calisthenics, or body weight exercises, then you won't get the big bulging muscles regardless of which protein shake you drink.
If you are training in martial arts, carbohydrates will give you endurance as it puts glycogen in your muscles, which uses that before going anaerobic metabolism (creating muscle fatigue).
However, protein is still important as it allows you to rebuild your muscles that you are training. They don't get better off nothing, after all. And not just "any" protein works. You need the full amino acid coverage, which milk also provides if it is whole and not skim.
Question: If drinking protein shakes, must you work out longer to create a calorie deficit to lose body fat? A calorie deficit helps a person lose weight, but then is it recommended to also gain muscle mass? When lifting, I drink two protein shakes per day plus meals which can total well over 2000 calories each day. If my BMR is 1550 cal per day, wouldn't I actually gain body fat than lose it, even with exercise? Does this mean I have to simply work out longer to create a calorie deficit?
Answer: If your BMR ias 1550, then 2000 calories are more than you need. Excess calories, no matter what type, result in body fat.
Lifting weights burns fewer calories than cardio. You might want to consider adding some cardio (running, biking, step aerobics) to your workout.
Count the calories in your protein shakes, or skip them, and get your protein from your meals. Stick to the 1550. You'll gain muscle mass by lifting, as long as there's enough protein in your diet. (And skip the junk food and refined foods -- you'll get better nutrition, and less body fat, which means more muscle mass.)

Question: Should I start using protein shakes to get big and muscly? I am 16 and I am around ten and a half stone. I have been going to the gym for the past 4/5 weeks now and I go 3 times a week for about an hour or so and I am only seeing small improvements. But by using protein shakes will this help me to get bigger and more muscly? So should I use them?
Answer: No, save your money and enjoy eating your protein.
Too much protein can camage the kidneys, edical research shows that consuming too much protein -- more than 30% of your total daily caloric intake -- could actually harm your body.
The amount of protein you require depends on your weight and your daily caloric intake. Most Americans consume more than enough protein in their daily diets. A few specific groups of people are at risk for being protein-deficient, including elderly women and people with illnesses or eating disorders. A protein deficiency is defined as eating 50% to 75% of the recommended amount of daily protein, Butterfield explains.
Ideally, you should consume 0.36 grams of protein for every pound of body weight, according to recommended daily allowances (RDA) set by the Food and Nutrition Board. So if you weigh 170 pounds, you need about 61 grams of protein each day.
Whether you are an avid strength trainer, a marathon runner, or just an average exerciser, a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, and complex carbohydrates is what nutritionists recommend.
Question: What protein shakes do you recommend after lifting? Like I don't want those monster protein shakes that makes you a body builder like MetRX or Cell-Tech. Just a protein shake that gives you an extra intake in protein to take after lifting for football.
I need to get bigger this year if I want to start on varsity.
Answer: Optimum Prime. Best ever. Only protein, doesn't jack you out like a freak.
I recommend the strawberry, it's really good. One scoop of this stuff inside your milk will give you an extra 24 grams of protein.
and LOL John, I'm talking about OptiMUM Prime, not OptiMUS lolololol XDD
wait...I don't remember whether it's called Optimum prime or just Optimum...crap
Question: What is the proper way to drink protein shakes? I am 5'2, 95 lbs., very small. I don't want to bulk up, but I do need some muscle tone. What would be the best time for me to drink protein shakes? Would it be okay for me to drink two a day and eat 2-3 servings of meat a day? Is it okay to drink one whole protein shake before and one after?
By the way, I am a 23-year-old female. I am naturally this small and have always been.
Answer: It is best to evenly spread your protein supplements across the day. The idea is to not have an empty stomach. You can only absorb 40-60g of protein every 2 hours or so.
Good luck!
Question: What would cause the shifter to shakes when in gear on a 2005 Pontiac Wave? The car is standard and the gear shifter wobbles around when driving, it shakes by it self. The car is only 5 years old and has rust already how is that possible?
To Bart: I have a 1995 Neon it has no rust, and the stick shift doesn't wobble either.
Answer: Assuming it is front wheel drive. Various things. An ignition miss or other engine miss. A bad CV joint. Bad motor mounts. Could even be out of balance tires. You could try a hill...get up to speed and let off the gas...see if it still wobbles. If so you may have a bad CV joint or tires.
Question: What it is if my car shakes when I get to a certain speed? I drive a '95 cutlass ciera - and I think it has about 144,000 miles on her. Anyway - when I'm driving to about 70mph my car shakes. I slow down and it goes away - but still - is there something I can do to fix it.
Answer: Most likely you have either a wheel out of balance or your front end is out of alignment. Either one is fairly inexpensive to have fixed and not difficult. Any local tire dealer will be able to make the repairs so just call around for your best price.
Best of Luck!!
Question: What does it mean when a kitten shakes it paws? I noticed that my kitten shakes his paws a lot. At first I thought that he did it because there was something on his paws or he stepped him something wet, but I know where is nothing there because I check or I had just swept there. Does anyone have a clue what this could be?
Answer: maybe he has malaria or parkinsons disease!
Question: The steering wheel shakes on my 98 camaro any ideas on what could cause it? It started about 2 days ago the steering wheel shakes back and forth the rest of the car doesn't shake or steer back and forth its just the steering wheel rocking. Any body have any ideas on what could be causing it?
Answer: you have a bad belt or bent rim need to have it checked look for a bulge in the tread of your tire good luck
Question: How many protein shakes can I drink in one go? The thing is that I am busy in quite a lot of outdoor work related tasks, and I don't have my protein shake readily available with me all the time. Can I drink lets say 2 or 3 shakes in the morning before I go to work in one go rather than drinking through out the day?
Thanks for your replies. How do I accept someone's answer as the best one? I am new to Yahoo answers. Thanks.
Answer: Your body will absorb 20-40 grams of protein at one time. So definitely it's better to go with drinking them throughout the day. Usually, most effective time is right after a workout (maybe 30-40g), then if you want to add more protein go with right before bed (20g), first thing in the morning (20-30g). If that's still not enough protein for you (unlikely), then you can have a small one about an hour before you workout or as a snack . Fyi, you should be eating about 0.7 to 1g protein per lb. of body weight.
