Soy
Question: What soy products provide the most isoflavones with the least amount of gas/acid? I have found that soy products are helping to minimize my hot flashes, especially soy nuts. But the soy nuts are also bringing on constant indigestion. Other products like soymilk and soycheese don't seem to do the trick. So now I am trying different tofu products. Any suggestions?
Answer: Hello...As a vegan, I eat a lot of soy (& whey) products. There is something I found that perhaps you could look into getting, which are soy isoflavones...Check this page out here, that explains all about it:

Question: what are some good alternatives to soy milk? I've been delving into the world of vegan baking and I noticed that it calls for soy milk in alot of recipes. Problem is, I'm allergic to soy milk. I can have other soy products, just not soy milk at all.
Could I replace the soy milk in recipes with stuff like rice milk or almond milk? And would I use the same amount as it calls for in the recipe when using soy milk?
Answer: I'm sure you could...they all (soy, rice, almond) are, in the end, replacements for regular old cows milk. I'm sure substituting for one of these would be fine. How does rice and almond milk taste? I've tried soy and one word comes to mind...YUK! I don't know why...I just could not stomach it.
Question: How can I make soy milk without using a blender? We don't have a blender at home. And I'm planning to make a soy milk, I already bought a soy beans. I search it in youtube on how to make soy milk in every video they always use a blender. THe problem is we don't have a blender at home. What can I use to breakdown the soy beans
Answer: a food processor....or you could se a hand blender
Question: What percentage of soy is in Kirkland organic vanilla soy milk? I want to make tofu at home. It requires soy milk that is at least 12% soy.
Answer: 10.7 but it should still be fine for your recipe
Question: How to tell when soy milk has expired? How can I tell when the soy milk in my fridge has expired? I don't drink soy milk that often, so even a quart of it tends to sit at the back of my fridge. I also know that the carton says to drink within five to seven days of opening. However, it's sometimes hard to remember exactly when I opened it.
Is there any way to tell by the texture, smell, etc, that soy milk has expired? I've been drinking this stuff for a year now and can never tell until about a half hour after I've drank it. I get a horrible upset stomach.
Real answers only, please.
Answer: mark on the carton with a sharpie the day you opened it..... that way you will always know if it has been five to seven days......
Question: Does your soy milk contain carrageenan? Does carageenan promote bone cancer, etc, or is this untrue? I recently became Vegan.. I just finished my first carton of soy milk the other day and realized it had this ingredient! I also bought brown rice milk just yesterday and it also has this ingredient. I am planning to buy soy milk/brown rice milk that does not contain this ingredient next time. Am I doing the right thing?
Answer: Carageenan is just a natural thickener derived from seaweed, so I cannot imagine it causeing any adverse health problems. Chug away!
Have a great weekend-
Peace...
Question: How common is it it to develop soy allergies late in life? I can't believe it, but it would appear that I am developing an allergy to soy. I didn't seem to have any problems before when I was just a regular old vegetarian, but since I've cut out dairy and eggs I have been eating a lot more soy (soy cream, soy milk, soy cheeses, on top of the usual soy meat substitutes and tofu). It's been about two months since I've increased my soy intake. About a week or so ago I started getting mild hives. They seem worst at night (like an hour or so after dinner where I usually get the most soy) and tend to go away for the most part during the day, but I had tofu for lunch and didn't have a very severe reaction, so I don't know what's going on. I am going away for the night tomorrow and plan on eating a lot of soy so that I can rule out an allergy to my cat. I typically do not have allergies, although I did get hives a lot when I was a kid. Does it sound normal to get an allergy late in life like this? Are hives a common symptom of soy allergies? Thanks!
P.S. I'm asking here because I know other vegetarians will have more experience with soy related questions than most others and I recall a few people mentioning soy allergies here before.
Oh my gosh, such good information here. I just can't thank you all enough. I'm going to leave the question up for a while to see if I get anymore responses. You guys rock!
Answer: Yes, allergies and intolerances can develop at any point in life! The most common known causes of onset are: digestive infection, a period of prolonged stress, an accident/physical trauma, or just plain having too much!
I developed a wheat intolerance when I was about 12, but it took me about 12 years to fully realize what was going wrong with me. Wheat is fine for 95%+ of the population, just like soy is probably good for 95%+ of the population, but to me, its a real danger.
The complications of an untreated food intolerance are extreme! Vegetable proteins are actually very complicated and I believe from a chemical perspective, it is the plant's last defense against being eaten. Some people suggest that real Tofu that has been fermented properly is easier to digest. Genetically modified and raw soy protein additives would be the worst. Modern farming techniques put intentional stress on the plants to increase protein yield, some percentage of these proteins are defensive and attack anyone who tries to eat them. Your body can only handle so much based on genetic, and other factors.
Other risky foods are dairy, wheat, corn, soy, tomato, and citrus. Too much reliance on one can leave you vulnerable to intolerance. Try an elimination diet for a few weeks and see if you start to feel better. After regular consumption of a food you are intolerant to, it can take up to a year to reach full healing!
Question: Is it possible to make soy yogurt at home? I do make home-made dairy yogurt and I was wondering whether I can make my own soy yogurt from soy milk? Does anyone have a recipe for that? Can I use the same yogurt starter as for milk or is the a specific starter for soy milk?
Answer: could u try substituting the regular milk with soy milk? I don't know much abput yogurt making, so good luck!
Question: What are the benefits to drinking soy milk and using soy based products? I just had the urge to try soy milk and I loved it. i also love SOYJOY bars and I was wondering if there are any added health benefits to eating soy? Or any cons as well?
*Im looking to find out clinically proven facts, not opinions and personal lifestyle choices.
Answer: If your a vegetarian than yeah it has added benefits, it contains vitamins and protein that you could otherwise only get it meat, but if your not, as far as I can tell, it has no added benefits that milk doesn't. But, it doesn't have cons either, so if you like it better than milk, drink it :)
hope I helped
Question: What can be used to replace soy yogurt in a recipe? The recipe is a vegan chocolate-chip cookie recipe. I have made it before, but the recipe calls for a small amount of vanilla soy yogurt, which I currently do not have. I am trying to cut back on soy intake anyway, so I was wondering if something else could be substituted. Chocolate non-dairy, non-soy milk perhaps? Nothing dairy or egg based, please. Thank you very much.
Answer: These are ingredients forthe BEST CHOCO CHIP cookies I have ever tasted regardless of the fact they are vegan.
I started eating them before being vegan and just wanted something with no white sugar.
Found these with this ingredient list
Unbleached flour, organic evaporated cane juice, chocolate chips (no dairy, no refined sugar), soy margarine, organic brown rice syrup, vanilla, lecithin, unsulfered molasses, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa & sea salt, walnuts.
They are really moist, and dense, chewy, properly crumbly, but stay whole, and quite honestly the best cookies I have ever tasted, literally.
The "vegan" label is immaterial.
No soy yohurt in them- I don't know where your yoghurt would go- in the place of the margerine?
Lots of recipes don't use marge- they use canola oil.
And lots don't even use soy,
here is one;
2 cups unbleached white flour
2 t baking soda
1/2 t sea salt
5 T cocoa powder
3/4 cup semi sweet chips
1/3 cup water
3/4 cup turbinado sugar
1/4 cup brown rice syrup
1 t vanilla extract
1 T cocoa powder
1/2 cup olive oil
Question: Is Soy Sauce good or bad for you? I've noticed you can now get reduced salt soy sauce. Does that mean regular soy sauce is too salty and therefore bad for you? I often cook fish in soy sauce, is that just like adding loads of salt?
Answer: There is a lot of sodium in soy sauce and sodium is not good for you. Sodium can cause high blodd pressure among other things. A lot of people have to be on low sodium diets. That's why many brands now offer a low sodium version.
Question: Whats the difference between soy chocolate milk and regular chocolate milk? I hate reagular chocolate milk but I love chocolate soy milk and it's the other way around with white milk. I just want to know whats in soy chocolate milk thats different than regular chocolate milk.
Answer: Soy chocolate milk is made from soy. Dairy chocolate milk is made from real milk, probably from cows, although I see no reason goat's milk could not be used.
Question: Why does soy sauce have so much sodium? The soy sauce I just bought has 960 mg of sodium in just one tablespoon. That's 40% of DV.
Well I meant is the salt just there for taste or is there another reason?
Answer: It is there for both taste and for use as a preservative. That being said, soy sauce is a great source for salt in all kinds of sauces and marinades. Try adding it instead of salt and it imparts flavor beyond the simple addition of salt.
For example, to make a marinade for white fish (Tilapia is inexpensive and tasty when prepared this way), combine the juice from 1 small orange, 2 lemons, 2 limes, 6 TBSP of honey, 2 TBSP of soy sauce, 4 cloves of minced garlic, and a tsp of fresh ground pepper in a bowl and whisk well. Put it in a bag with the fist and marinate for 2 hours in the fridge. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 350F for 30 min and you will have a sweet/tart fish dish that is sure to please!
Question: What is the difference between soy and soya? Some people say soy and soya is the same thing, some say there's a difference. Is soy american and soya british? I read it on a wbesite but I don't know if its true. Please help!
Answer: an 'A' they are one and the same
Question: Should Chinese soy sauce chicken be cooked over a longer or shorter period? I've been cooking soy sauce chicken wings, but I am unsure of how long to cook them for.
If I cook it over too long of a period, will they dry out and overcook?
Or will cooking it for a longer period of time make it absorb more broth flavor?
Chinese soy sauce chicken is basically boiling chicken completely submerged in soy sauce (plus some other ingredients of course) and water.
Answer: This depends on what kind of soy sauce marinade you are using and how you are cooking them, if you are oven baking, i think about 20 mins on 180 degree celcius is just fine! but if you are stir-frying, you need to watch them, the meat will go white and the marinade will get sticky, you will be able to tell but i think about 20-30 mins in a pan is enough depending on how many wings there are!
