Sulfonyl
Question: What is Methyl Sulfonyl Methane and what are its health benefits and side effects (if any)? I've heard extremely good things about it but is it actually true? Has someone used it?
Answer: It is a building block that aids the formation of cartilage in your body. Similar to glucosamine and chondroitin, but a biochemical more primitive form that the body has to convert, thus it is cheaper than glucosamine. I am not aware of any side effects, but just about everything has them so if you have a particular health condition then you should always check with your doc first. The only real side effect of glucosamine aside from allergic reactions to shellfish is a stomach ache.

Hope that helps explain the differences better. I drink MSM in my emergen C everyday to help with arthritis.
Question: Methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) tablets 1000 mg...How many can I take in a day? The brand is Holista.
Will it help grow my hair and nails?
Answer: Q: How much MSM can I take? Are there any side effects?
A: Clinical trials have investigated doses ranging from 1,500 mg per day up to 6,000 mg per day. Stanley Jacob, MD reports using MSM in his patients at doses of up to 100 grams per day with no ill effects under highly controlled medical treatment regimens in a hospital clinic (MSM: The Definitive Guide). MSM toxicity studies indicate that these large doses do not present safety issues, however it is possible that they could result in occasional loose stools or other minor effects.

Question: Where to buy msm ( methyl sulfonyl methane ) health supplement / medicine in Delhi? Please tell me a brand of msm available in Delhi and also tell me where to buy it. The medication should contain only msm and nothing like glucosamine etc. I need it for hair growth.
Answer: I don't know but you could depend on natural sources of sulphur because methyl sulfonyl methane is just an organic form of sulphur at the end of the day.
Bell peppers, cucumbers and eggs are all good sources of sulphur, as is the natural mineral epsoms salts. For good hair growth, also make sure you get enough B vitamins.....blackstrap molasses, brewers yeast, natural live yogurt [by way of the lactic organisms] and wholegrains are good natural sources. Pumpkin seeds will be good as sources of the minerals copper and zinc required for good hair growth.
If you are malnourished or have any underlying disease state this can impact on your hair growth. Get a check up. If it is male pattern baldness....try pumpkin seed oil diluted in a little jojoba oil or olive oil massaged into the area of scalp affected.
Good luck.
Question: do sulfonyl urea for example glibenclamide contain sulphur in them?
Answer: Definition of Sulfa drug
MRSA Slideshow Sulfa drug: One of the sulfonamides, the sulfa-related antibiotics which are used to treat bacterial and some fungal infections.
The first sulfa drug was prontosil. It was discovered by the German physician and chemist Gerhard Domagk in 1935. The sulfa family of drugs includes sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole (brand name: Thiosulfil Forte), sulfamethoxazole (Gantanol), sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin), and various high-strength combinations of three sulfonamides.
Sulfa drugs kill bacteria and fungi by interfering with their metabolism. They were the "wonder drugs" before penicillin and are still used today. Because sulfa drugs concentrate in the urine before being excreted, treating urinary tract infections is one of their most common uses. Sulfa drugs can have a number of interactions with prescription and over-the-counter drugs (including PABA sunscreens), and are not appropriate for people with some health conditions.

GENERIC NAME: glyburide
BRAND NAMES: Micronase, Diabeta, Glynase
DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Glyburide is an oral glucose lowering-drug in a class of diabetes medicines called sulfonylureas. Glyburide lowers the sugar level by stimulating insulin secretion in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone which lowers the blood sugar level.
Approximately 90% of patients with diabetes have type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in adulthood, and is associated with obesity and a strong family history of the disease. Sugar (glucose) intolerance is related to impaired insulin secretion by the pancreas and resistance to insulin at the cell level.
PRESCRIPTION: Yes
GENERIC AVAILABLE: Yes
PREPARATIONS: Tablets; 1.25mg, 1.5mg, 2.5mg, 3mg, 5mg.
STORAGE: Glyburide should be stored at room temperature in a tight container.
PRESCRIBED FOR: Glyburide is used in type 2 diabetes to help lower and control blood sugars in those not controlled by diet alone. Studies have shown that strict sugar control in diabetics decreases the risks of eye, kidney, and nerve damage. Oral sulfonylureas are used in type 2 diabetics after a trial on a strict diabetic diet and usually before insulin is tried.
DOSING: Glyburide may be taken with or without food. Since glyburide is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys, dosages may need to be lowered in patients with liver or kidney dysfunction.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: All sulfonylureas can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Therefore, glyburide must be used cautiously in patients with kidney or liver problems, and those with poor food intake, using alcohol, or participating in heavy exercise, as well as in patients taking other glucose-lowering drugs. Drug interactions causing hypoglycemia can occur with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, sulfa drugs, coumadin, miconazole, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, and beta-blocking drugs. High glucose reactions (hyperglycemia) can occur with thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, thyroid medicines, estrogens, niacin, dilantin, and calcium channel blocking drugs.
PREGNANCY: Glyburide is not recommended during pregnancy. Use of glyburide during the 2nd and 3rd term of pregnancy does not appear to affect the fetus, but use of glyburide during pregnancy should be discussed with a physician
NURSING MOTHERS: Glyburide should not be used by breast-feeding mothers.
SIDE EFFECTS: Minor side effects include nausea, heartburn, and bloating. Skin rashes can occur and cause itching, hives, or a diffuse measles-like rash. Rare but serious side effects include hepatitis, jaundice, and a low sodium concentration.

Question: will DL- panthenol (panthenol) and MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) dissolve in vegetable oil?
Answer: No, I don't think so. MSM is highly a highly polar molecule and I don't believe it will dissolve in non-polar vegetable oil.
But you could try it, take a small test tube and mix a small amount of each before you commit to a large amount, if they mix you are ok, if not - stop there.
Question: Where can I find a Lepidium supplement for a Celiac patient? This and sulfonyl , not mixed with MSM, are suppose to help allergies including food allergies which irritate the stomach lining. I have not been able to find a source to order these supplements.
Answer: Check with your drug store or a health food store.
Good luck !

Question: Bioavailability of a drug...what does this mean? I just bought this bottle of MSM from a nutrition store. The bottle says "100% Pure natural vegetable source. Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) 1000mg (contains 34% bioavailable organic sulfur.") What does that 34% mean? Does it mean the bottle only has 34% of msm in it?
Answer: that means 34% of the dose will actually be absorbed. you have to realize when you consume a substance orally not all of it will be absorbed. some is destroyed or passed through without absorbtion.

Glycine 482 mg
Vitamin C (magnesium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate) 216mg
Calcium (calcium ascorbate) 48mg
Magnesium (magnesium ascorbate) 24 mg
Answer: Do you have a name for these things ? I would like to read up on them. Off the top of my head I would choose the 2nd one. MSM (which is a sulfa compound) and the Glucosamine HCl are good and in large enough mg size to do some good. I am not aware of glucosamine from a plant source, but that doesn't mean anything.

Question: MSM Pills...how do you know which ones are the real deal? I just bought this. The bottle says "100% Pure natural vegetable source. Methyl Sulfonyl Methane (MSM) 1000mg (contains 34% bioavailable organic sulfur." This is by a company in Canada called Trophic, and the brand of MSM is LIGNISUL msm. Ok, shouldn't it be 100% msm, or at least 99%. Or what does that 34% bioavailable organic sulfur mean? If 34% of bioavailable organic sulfur is in the bottle, I'm wondering what the remaining 66%. The bottle also says "contains no yeast, wheat soy, gluten, corn, dairy, artificial colours or preservatives? I wanted to buy a bottle with just msm. I'm not sure if this isn't a good one because it only has 34% msm and the bottle doesn't even say what else is in there.I also did that test, there's a test you can do to find out if the msm pill has any fillers (extra stuff in it). I opened one pill and pour it in a glass of water. It contents of the pill didn't dissolve. It just stayed on top of the water. So this isn't good. Or am I misisng something here? Should I get another one and which one should I buy that's good? I heard the OPTImsm brand is good. is this true?
Answer: MSM pills are usually only partially effective, sometimes even synthetic with fillers. The "34%" bioavailable sulfur just means this is a synthetic source, so your body won't absorb it all. If you want natural MSM, get on collostrum.

Question: Vitamin Supplements and ACL Injuries? I tore my ACL and will be having surgery in about a month. Has anyone had any positive experiences trying joint health vitamin supplements. I heard Shark Cartilage and Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) are some good options.
Richard C- Thank you for the response. What leg exercises do you recommend for the uninjured leg. I have being doing PT since on the injured leg and exercises twice a day (leg raises, bike, heel slides, hamgstring curls, hanging leg raises and 40% squats). The bike and squats to work both legs but should I bed doing other exercises (leg raises, ect) to the uninjured leg. Any tips of exercises for the injured leg would be very helpful
Thank you!
That is tips for uninjured leg
Answer: Jessica, the best thing that you can do now to speed up the healing is to make the leg as strong as you can prior to the procedure. Do this by working on the uninjured leg first by doing 3 sets of the 15 reps per set with a 1 minute rest period between sets. Push the uninjured leg as much as you can and when you are finished then do the same movement on the injured leg. Work the leg from the hip to the foot and this will definitely speed up recovery. As for vitamins the only one that is going to help is C as it is necessary for collagen repair.
