Tobacco Smoke
Question: How to identify and fix tobacco smoke leaking in our home? There is tobacco smoke leaking in our home from a neighboring unit. We cannot figure out where it is leaking in or how to fix. Can you recommend what tool/s can measure this, and how to fix? Thanks!
Answer: It may be coming in through the heating and air units if yours and theirs are connected. Their is really no solution to this unless you install a filter over the vents.
However, you should check any possible connected appliances for possible connected drafts as well.
And of course check for any peep holes in the walls...lol
if any is found, seal them up with a type of sealent purchased from your local hardware store.
Question: How can second hand tobacco smoke cause blockages in your arteries? My cardiologist told me my blockages, 99% in my middle coronary artary was due to breathing second hand tobacco smoke over the years where I work, out doors most of the time. Can anyone explain how it is? I don't drink or smoke. I had to stop being a blood donor because my ALT levels were slightly above normal a few years before my angeoplasty proceedure.
Answer: Research has generated scientific evidence that secondhand smoke (that is, in the case of cigarettes, a mixture of smoke released from the smoldering end of the cigarette and smoke exhaled by the smoker) causes the same problems as direct smoking, including heart disease,[5] cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and lung ailments such as COPD, bronchitis and asthma.[6] Specifically, meta-analyses have shown lifelong non-smokers with partners who smoke in the home have a 20–30% greater risk of lung cancer, and those exposed to cigarette smoke in the workplace have an increased risk of 16–19%.[7]
A wide array of negative effects are attributed, in whole or in part, to frequent, long term exposure to second hand smoke.[8][9][10] Some of these effects include:
Cancer:
General: overall increased risk;[11] reviewing the evidence accumulated on a worldwide basis, the International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded in 2002 that "Involuntary smoking (exposure to secondhand or 'environmental' tobacco smoke) is carcinogenic to humans (Group 1)."[12]
Lung cancer: the effect of passive smoking on lung cancer has been extensively studied. A series of studies from the USA from 1986–2003[13][14][15][16][17][18], the UK in 1998[19][20], Australia in 1997[21] and internationally in 2004[22] have consistently shown a significant increase in relative risk among those exposed to passive smoke.
There is conflicting information regarding increased risk of breast cancer[23][24]
Passive smoking does not appear to be associated with pancreatic cancer[25]
Ear, nose, and throat: risk of ear infections[26]
Circulatory system: risk of heart disease[27]
Lung problems:
Risk of asthma[28][29]
Pregnancy:
Risk of premature birth[30]
General:
Worsening of asthma, allergies, and other conditions[31]
Risk to children[32]
Risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)[33]
Risk of developing asthma[34][35]
Risk of lung infections[36][37][38][39]
More severe illness with bronchiolitis, and worse outcome[40]
Increased risk of developing tuberculosis if exposed to a carrier[41]
Risk of allergies
Risk of Crohn's disease[42]
Risk of learning difficulties, although this may only be in children exposed before birth.[43] Animal models suggest a role for nicotine and carbon monoxide in neurocognitive problems[39]
Overall increased risk of death in both adults, where it is estimated to kill 53,000 nonsmokers per year, making it the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.[44] and in children[45]
Question: Can you be more susceptible to tobacco smoke than maybe marijuana smoke? I'm wondering if you can be more susceptible to tobacco smoke then marijuana smoke? I have asthma but not to bad and I can feel a little tight when around a smoker (my uncle) but I still have no problem breathing... I'm wondering if this can be different for different types of smoke? Almost like an allergen?
Answer: Mary J won't hurt you, despite what the government or conservatives say. I'm not a pothead, but I've researched the facts. Tobacco smoke has so many chemicals in it from the company's vats, that crap poisons you even more with every inhale. Marijuana actually helps to open up your alveoli and help you breathe a little better. It also has medical benefits and relieves pain. Marijuana is NOT a hallucinogen unless someone smokes a blunt half the size of a telephone pole. I mean, there is definitely a possibility that someone could have an allergy to cannabis or marijuana smoke, but it is highly unlikely. And to all those people out there about to go on a rant about how marijuana destroys brain cells, it actually helps develop them. It's been tested and proven in rats. It also lessened symptoms of anxiousness and depression. The original test done in the '70s saying marijuana destroys brain cells was based on 4 monkeys with gas masks on who were forced to breathe in the smoke of 60 pure Mary J joints worth of smoke. Well, der der der, of course that's going to do some damage. I apologize for getting off topic there, but I just wanted to prove a point.
Question: Does the tar in tobacco smoke vary based on temperature? I've heard hookah smokers say that less tar is produced from hookah smoke because the tobacco is "baked" rather than burned like in a cigar/cigarette. Does tobacco (or any other plant) really produce less tar when burned slowly at a lower temperature? I've looked around and couldn't find any info for temperature vs tar produced.
This is a purely scientific question. Don't bother lecturing me about the dangers of smoking. Thanks.
Answer: Cigarettes contain tar in them. Shisha does not.
Tar is formed from tobacco when it is burned. Since shisha is cooked it hardly forms either. The plus side to hookah also is that water filters tar. I have seen experiments where cigarettes are smoked through a hookah and then they cook the water leaving only the tar, it makes quiet a wad of tar. When done to water in the base of a hookah the amount is barely enough to qualify as a spitball. I have been searching YouTube for the videos but I can't seem to find them.
Question: How hot is tobacco smoke when inhaling? When a person smokes, how hot is the smoke inhaled? And is the heat a problem for the lungs? for example, if tobacco smoke is like 100 F, then if i inhaled 100 F of water vapor, would the water hurt my lungs?
Answer: I don't have the temperature but experienced smokers let the smoke cool before they inhale it from their mouth into their lungs. So it's lukewarm at best. Don't forget that 100 F is about body temperature, and that we can do fine when they air temperature is over 100 F, so temperatures at about that level aren't going to hurt you. Anything hot enough to burn or damage the cells of course could.
Question: Why is tobacco smoke so much more harsh than pot smoke? I've got a bit of experience with both, and compared to pot, it's downright painful to inhale cigarette smoke. I don't know what it is, but it's like tobacco smoke stings or something. I could take a whole lungful of potsmoke and be fine, but I wouldn't even consider it with a cigarette.
Does anyone know why?
Answer: I'm not sure, for some reason cigarette smoke also hinders your lungs performance a ton more than pot smoke as well.
I think it might be the parts of the lungs that it affects. Cigarette smoke does damage to the really small pockets in your lungs while marijuana smoke affects the larger more open areas.
And William T, quit talking out of your ass. Tobacco smoke is very clearly more harsh on your lungs than pot smoke, anyone who has smoke both can tell you that with 100% certainty.
Question: IR camera for tobacco smoke leakage detection? Does anyone know the right kind of IR camera to rent or purchase to detect tobacco smoke leaking in a home?
Answer: maybe right here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeJ1c9YOzvM
Question: What harmful substances are in tobacco smoke that are not in smoke of other burning plants, eg tree leaves? We are told that second hand cigarette smoke contains hundreds of harmful substances. I do not understand why burning tobacco would produce significantly different substances than burning any other plant, for example leaves, grass (take that whichever way you want), or for that matter even wood. Tobacco contains nicotine but I don't think the combustion products of nicotine would be the issue.
Answer: It's all the chemicals and toxins the industry puts into the tobacco at production.
And forestfire fighters get twice the lung cancer than non forestfire fighters even with their protective equipment.
Question: Will exposing marijuana to tobacco smoke lower the quality of marijuana? buds exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke, what effect does this have on the herb?
Answer: No!
People smoking cigarettes while the bud is sitting on the table can not lower the quality. The only effect on the it is air drying it out.
Question: If i broke half off the mouth piece off of a tobacco smoking pipe (glass) is it still safe to smoke or glass? If i broke half off the mouth piece off of a tobacco smoking pipe (glass) is it still safe to smoke or is there possibly glass shards or anything else harmful?
I dropped it on concrete by accident of course.
Answer: Personally; I Wouldn't to continue to use it, If there was glass shards they can cut you inside, And you could possibly die.
Get a new one; They shouldn't be to expensive should they?
Question: Tobacco Smoke? How can I make the stench go away completely in as fast a time as possible?
older, your house
Breathe...I don't smoke...i gave up about 8 weeks ago but I still smell it in my clothes and bed etc...
Answer: Burning incense works well or oil burner with nice smelling oils and makes the rest of the house smell nice too.
Question: What is the cancer causing substance in tobacco smoke? well, i just need to know the cancer causing SUBSTANCE in tobacco SMOKE. Not really any details. Just that. Plz help me!
Well, I don't actually smoke. I just need 2 know this answer. I can't find it ANYWHERE! PLZ HELP ME! Remember, cancer substance from smoke, not the tobacco. thx ppl! =)
Answer: Well, for a start, the smoke itself is a carcinogen. Inhaling hot smoke damages the tiny Villi in your respiratory tract, and this can cause cancer without any help from chemicals. But chemicals there are, and plenty of them. Nicotine is the main chemical inhaled in tobacco smoke, it's a mild stimulant and highly addictive. Even though Nicotine is not known to cause cancer by itself, it is the most dangerous as it acts on brain cells causing the smoker to feel 'relaxed' even though it actually speeds up the metabolic process, much like speed, Crystal Meth, or 'E'. Without it people wouldn't smoke.
No one nows for sure which of the dozens of chemicals inhaled in smoke causes cancer, so there is no really definitive answer to your question. There has, however, been research to suggest that the most likely culprits are Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, or PAHs. They don't know whether tobacco smoke contains a lot of this stuff, or whether smoking just prevents your body from getting rid of the stuff properly (you can also get PAHs from eating burnt food or just breathing polluted air).
Again, this doesn't prove for sure that PAHs cause lung cancer, but if you had to pick one substance that'd be my guess.
Good luck and DON'T SMOKE!!!! EVER!!!
Question: Is it illegal to smoke tobacco in Maryland if you are under 18? I got a citation for possession of tobacco, and there are kids who smoke cigarettes outside of my school everyday and get away with it. I just had a cigar with a friend. Is it illegal to smoke tobacco if you are under 18 in maryland?
I got a citation for possession of tobacco, and there are kids who smoke cigarettes outside of my school everyday and get away with it and the cops dont do anything. I just had a cigar with a friend. Is it illegal to smoke tobacco if you are under 18 in maryland?
Answer: Yes it is illegal to possess and to smoke. According to CR § 10-108, "A minor may not:
(1) use or possess a tobacco product or cigarette rolling paper;"
The charge is a civil offense, rather than a criminal one. This means it does not give you a criminal record.
Those kids smoking outside the school only get away with it because the cops don't see them. Lots of people do illegal drugs too and get away with it, this in NO WAY makes it legal.
Question: Is it more dangerous to smoke tea leaves in a pipe or tobacco in a pipe? I have a pipe and want to smoke tea leaves from it because i do not have access to tobacco. I was thinking of smoking camomile tea; would this be more unhealthy than smoking tobacco?
Answer: I have never heard of smoking tea leaves in a pipe. I would think the tea would be very harsh. You should just get some pipe tobacco instead. You should be waiting till your old enough anyway. Pipe smoking is a great hobby.
Question: Is smoking tea leaves any more dangerous to smoke tea leaves than tobacco cigarettes? I have a pipe and don't want to smoke tobacco. Could i put tea leaves in it?
Answer: Alright let me help you out here. Smoke in all forms is bad. BUT I am sure you already know that so to answer your question it is MUCH better than cigarettes. Its certainly not GOOD for you because no smoke for your lungs is good but if you are going to do it over tobacco definitely tea is the way to go. Tea does not contain over 60 carcinogens (cancer causing substances), and also does not contain nicotine (an addictive substance). But I will repeat, smoke in all forms is bad, but the tea here, is the lesser evil.
Question: What can i smoke cannabis with apart from tobacco? first time me & my friend are going to smoke it, we don't want to smoke tobacco, is there anything else we can mix it with that is easily accessible?
Answer: If you want to smoke it but not tobacco then I suggest you get a little bong, a vaporiser (if you've a bit of spare cash) or a little pipe.
You can smoke it pure (if you've got bud) but it can be quite harsh. If you've got resin (hash) then I'd suggest you eat it, make some cookies (you can buy those cake mixes).
THC the active chemical of marijuana is not soluble in water but it is in fat (butter, milk etc etc) so cakes and stuff are purfect for making 'space cakes'
Just be careful, it takes around an hr to take effect if you eat it so be careful not to eat too much to start off with. Eat one or two then wait the full hr and see how it effects you. Eat too much and you'll either pull a whitey or fall asleep.
To smoke hash without baccy use a pipe/bong etc if you want something to mix it with that is not baccy all I can really suggest is wild dagga (buy it off the net from a head shop) There's not really many other options.
I'd just use a little pipe to start with. Eating it makes it more potent (the heat changes the thc slightly) so it is likely to be stronger eating than if you smoked it, it 's also easier to control the dose if you smoke it as you can feel it straight away, this may be the way to go if your a newbie, stick it in a pipe (you can make a pipe easily and cheaply out of a drinks can and somethiong to make some holes)
Happy stoning !
