Vitamin B
Question: vitamin b? vitamin b and vitamin b-12 are they the same thing?
i know b12 helps aid weight loss but what about just vitamin b?
Answer: The B vitamins are eight water-soluble vitamins that play important roles in cell metabolism. Historically, the B vitamins were once thought to be a single vitamin, referred to as Vitamin B (much like how people refer to Vitamin C or Vitamin D). Later research showed that they are chemically distinct vitamins that often coexist in the same foods. Supplements containing all eight B vitamins are generally referred to as a vitamin B complex. Individual B vitamin supplements are referred to by the specific name of each vitamin (e.g. B1, B2, B3).

[edit] B vitamins deficiency
Several named vitamin deficiency diseases may result from the lack of sufficient B-vitamins.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) deficiency causes Beriberi. Symptoms of this disease of the nervous system include weight loss, emotional disturbances, Wernicke's encephalopathy (impaired sensory perception), weakness and pain in the limbs, periods of irregular heartbeat, and edema (swelling of bodily tissues). Heart failure and death may occur in advanced cases. Chronic thiamine deficiency can also cause Korsakoff's syndrome, an irreversible psychosis characterized by amnesia and confabulation.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) deficiency causes Ariboflavinosis. Symptoms may include cheilosis (cracks in the lips), high sensitivity to sunlight, angular cheilitis, glossitis (inflammation of the tongue), seborrheic dermatitis or pseudo-syphilis (particularly affecting the scrotum or labia majora and the mouth), pharyngitis, hyperemia, and edema of the pharyngeal and oral mucosa.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin) deficiency, along with a deficiency of tryptophan causes Pellagra. Symptoms include aggression, dermatitis, insomnia, weakness, mental confusion, and diarrhea. In advanced cases, pellagra may lead to dementia and death.
Deficiencies of other B vitamins result in symptoms that are not part of a named deficiency disease.
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) deficiency can result in acne and Paresthesia, although it is uncommon.
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) deficiency may lead to anemia, depression, dermatitis, high blood pressure (hypertension), water retention, and elevated levels of homocysteine.
Vitamin B7 deficiency does not typically cause symptoms in adults but may lead to impaired growth and neurological disorders in infants.
Vitamin B9 (Folic acid) deficiency results in elevated levels of homocysteine. Deficiency in pregnant women can lead to birth defects. Supplementation is often recommended during pregnancy. Researchers have shown that folic acid might also slow the insidious effects of age on the brain.
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) deficiency causes pernicious anemia, memory loss and other cognitive decline. It is most likely to occur among elderly people as absorption through the gut declines with age. In extreme (fortunately rare) cases, paralysis can result.
Related nutrients
Many of the following substances have been referred to as vitamins because they were believed to be vitamins at one time, and they are relevant to vitamin nomenclature in that the numbers that were assigned to them form "gaps" in the series of B-vitamin names. Some of them, though not essential to humans, are essential in the diet other organisms; others have no known nutritional value. While they are non-"essential" in that they may be synthesized by the body from other starting materials, they have dietary significance. See also Orthomolecular medicine.
Vitamin B4: Adenine, a nucleobase.
Vitamin B7: "Vitamin I" of Centanni E. (1935) — also called 'Enteral factor' is a water and alcohol soluble rice-bran factor which prevents digestive disturbance in pigeons. It governs the anatomical and functional integrity of the intestinal tract. Later found in yeast. Possible candidates for this substance are inositol, niacin (nicotinic acid), and biotin. Carnitine was also claimed to be a candidate but is not soluble in alcohol.[citation needed]
Vitamin B8: adenosine monophosphate
Vitamin B10: para-aminobenzoic acid, or PABA
Vitamin B11: Pteryl-hepta-glutamic acid – Chick growth factor, which is a form of Folic acid. Later found to be one of five folates necessary for humans; (L-carnitine) is called Vitamin B11 in France[citation needed].
Vitamin B13: Orotic acid.
Vitamin B14: cell proliferant, anti-anemia, rat growth, and antitumor pterin phosphate named by Earl R. Norris (biochemist of folic acid fame). Isolated from human urine at 0.33ppm (later in blood), but later abandoned by him as further evidence did not comfirm this. He also claimed this was not Xanthopterin.
Vitamin B15 6-O-(dimethylaminoacetyl)-D-gluconic acid (Pangamic acid)
Vitamin B16 (dimethylgycine) – also known as DMG. (However Lipoic acid was discovered and named a B-Vitamin after B15 and before B17)
Vitamin B17 (Amygdalin or laetrile) – A toxic substance that can be extracted from apricot kernels. Proponents claim that it is effective in cancer treatment and prevention.
Vitamin B18 –
Vitamin B19 –
Vitamin B20 (Carnitine) –
Vitamin B21 –
Vitamin B22 – often claimed as an ingredient of Aloe vera extracts but also in many other foods. Claimed by one source to be Vitamin B12b-δ.
Vitamin Bh – another name for Biotin
Vitamin Bm ("mouse factor") – also used to designate Inositol
Vitamin Bp (Choline) –
Vitamin Bt (L-carnitine) –
Vitamin Bv – a type of B6 but not Pyridoxine
Vitamin Bw – a type of Biotin but not d-Biotin
Vitamin Bx – another name for PABA (para-Aminobenzoic acid)
Lipoic acid –
Note: B16, B17, B18, B19, B20, B21 & B22 do not appear to be animal factors but are claimed by naturopaths as human therapedic factors.
Health benefits
The B vitamins often work together to deliver a number of health benefits to the body. B vitamins have been shown to:
Support and increase the rate of metabolism
Maintain healthy skin and muscle tone
Enhance immune and nervous system function
Promote cell growth and division — including that of the red blood cells that help prevent anemia.
Together, they also help combat the symptoms and causes of stress, depression, and cardiovascular disease.
All B vitamins are water soluble, and are dispersed throughout the body. They must be replenished daily, since any excess is excreted in the urine.[citation needed]
[edit] Vitamin B sources
Vitamin B comes from a number of natural sources, including potatoes, bananas, lentils, chilli peppers, tempeh, liver, turkey, and tuna. Nutritional yeast (or brewer's yeast), molasses are especially good sources of Vitamin B. Marmite and the iconic Australian spread Vegemite bills itself as "one of the world's richest known sources of vitamin B". As might be expected, due to its high content of brewer's yeast, beer is a good source of B vitamins, although this may not be true of filtered beers. However, the alcohol in beer impairs the body's ability to activate vitamins. In fact, beer is sometimes referred to as "liquid bread".[3]
Another popular means of increasing one's Vitamin B intake is through the use of dietary supplements purchased at supermarkets, health centers, or natural food stores.
B vitamins are also commonly added to energy drinks.

Question: I take vitamin b tablets. Can vitamin b tablets cause any complications when my body is exposed to sun? I am curious because I am going to bali for a holiday where it will be very sunny and I will be exposed to the sun a lot. I read once that vitamin b tablets cause complication with the body if the body is exposed to a lot of sun. Is that true? I really need the info A.S.A.P.
Answer: Hi,
That all depends on which B vitamin supplements you're taking.
For example Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is destroyed by sunlight, so if you're taking b2 supplements then a lot of exposure to sun can indeed cause some issues, however not much research has been done as yet regarding this so everything may be fine (see sources).
If you're taking b complex vitamins (b6, b12, folic acid), then you shouldn't have any problems, sunlight can actually be beneficial for b12 production.
If you're just taking b supplements for prophylactic reasons I wouldn't worry too much. If you have a deeper health issue then I would consult your doctor to be on the safe side.
Question: What is the difference between vitamin B complex and vitamin B compound? I am trying to buy some good vitamin B's, But I am confused. I see complex and compound, but I dont understand the difference. Please elaborate.
Answer: Vitamin B12 is also called cobalamin because it contains the metal cobalt. This vitamin helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells [1-4]. It is also needed to help make DNA, the genetic material in all cells [1-4].
Vitamin B12 is bound to the protein in food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases B12 from proteins in foods during digestion. Once released, vitamin B12 combines with a substance called gastric intrinsic factor (IF). This complex can then be absorbed by the intestinal tract.
Question: How much vitamin B supplement should I take and will it help? I am already taking a daily vitamin but I heard taking vitamin B can help reduce the risk for mosquito bites and help boost energy. The last time I tried vitamin B I took a B complex vitamin and it just made my heart race.
Answer: there are many B vitamins, and taking the ones you don't need will result in unpleasant side effects as you have found. If energy is your goal, B-12 500mg lozenges should help. (do not take pills as B-12 is destroyed in stomach acids) get melt in your mouth lozenges. The B-12 is then absorbed directly into the blood through your oral mucous membranes.
as for mosquitoes, none of the B vitamins will keep those pests away. Brewer's yeast sometimes works as do garlic tabs...but frankly, I have found that just putting a fabric softener sheet in my pocket is as effective as anything else.
Question: How effective is a vitamin B complex in prevention of miscarriage? They say to take a vitamin B complex and folic acid when trying to get pregnant and to continue after pregnant and this helps in the prevention of miscarriage. Is this true? How effective is it? Also, where can I get progesterone cream? Does it need to be prescribed? thanks!
Answer: I've taken B complex and a Multi with Folic Acid for several years. Folic Acid is a B vitamin btw...so you'll get plenty with just those two. I've had miscarriages and a very healthy pregancy in a 2 year time frame.
Here is my take: there is no foolproof way of preventing miscarriage. I would def. recommend taking care of yourself, eating healthy, and taking your vitamins. But miscarriages may still happen, because not every egg/sperm combo is going to be healthy enough to produce a baby. Sometimes there are genetic glitches that won't work no matter what vitamins you are taking, and so a miscarriage is your body's natural way of starting over. But you should be very aware of your progesterone levels before you begin trying to concieve.
I'd ask the Dr. about your progesterone levels, and using cream to boost to them if necessary. Progesterone is not just a pregnancy hormone, it's the one that regulates the thickness of your womb's lining every month. If you have very light periods, then more than likely, you have low progesterone. Many women aren't aware that chemical forms of birth control intentionally supress your progestrone levels to prevent implantation if fertilization occurs. (totally true! ask your Dr.) Even after coming off of chemical birth control, your body may not 'bounce back' with healthy progesterone levels. So what happens is that if the egg does get fertilized, there is not enough lining there for the baby to attach to and to sustain life.
My progesterone experience: I followed my Dr.'s advice an had a DNC after getting pregnant with an IUD (it was in position and in place for over a year when I got pregnant with it in...I lost the baby). After the DNC, my periods were very light. I got pregnant again, and lost that baby because my lining was too thin to support life. I opted to miscarry naturally that time. My periods returned to a healthy flow, and I was able to quickly get pregnant and had a very healthy pregnancy that time.
My Mom orders progesterone cream from a natual foods website for her menopause symptoms...so if you confirm with your doctor that you want to use progesterone, then that may be less expensive than getting a prescription.
Best of luck!

Question: Can hair lost from stress grow and/or vitamin B deficiency grow back? I can tell that during school, I lost a lost of hair due to stress. I wondering if it will grow back. Also, can hair lost from vitamin B deficiency grow back if you put more B vitamins in your system? Answers are appreciated. Thank you.
Answer: try some biotin it worked for my little lady.
Question: What are some foods that are rich in vitamin B? Exclude foods with any dairy products or eggs.
Exclude any meat, as well.
I've become vitamin B deficient due to my veganism, I've started to take vitamin B pills but I heard that pills aren't enough.
Answer: Pills are enough. Its hard to become b12 defiecent right away, as it is stored in the liver for years... However, you should drink soymilk, and eat mock meat, as well as fortified foods like breakfast cereals.
Question: Is it okay to mix vitamin B complexes with Citalopram anti-depressant medicine? I'm on the anti-depressant medicine Citalopram and was wondering if it'd be alright to mix with Vitamin B complexes? Like taking one in the morning and one in the evening.
Answer: I suppose that it would depend on the dosage... and I'm not going to ask why you're on anti-depressants, that would be pretty personal, but i know that this sounds that I'm just saying this from on TV, like people killing themselves while on anti-depressants... But some of those story's are actually true, and even if you're noticing a difference from before now that you're on the anti-depressants, they really won't help you, and are going to make it worse over time... this again might sound really stupid, but what the anti depress... are trying to do is release "feel good" hormones in you're body, (or "Intoxicators") and most of the time doing an unsuccessful job, try going to a chiropractor... Because it is proven that this will NATURALLY and SAFELY, not pouring toxins into your body with the anti-depressants, release those hormones that you need to help you... well, i won't go any further with that...
so my answer is Yes, you might want to ask a doctor this, just incase, but you should be fine with the B Complexes and the Citalopram...
Good Luck!!!

Question: What is the safe amount of vitamin B complex to take per day? Currently I take reductil 10mg every morning, but will be moving to 15mg in a week. I heard that taking vitamin B also helps speed up your metabolism, so I want to take that also.
I was thinking since im taking reductil in the morning i can take the vitamin b at lunchtime or so. What is the safe amount of vitamin B to take per day with reductil, and when would be the best time?
I met a doctor a while back she said taking vitamin b before going out on a night drinking helps with not having a hangover and generally feeling bad the next day. 10 pts for any help.
Answer: unless your body is very low and has a vitamin B deficiency.......multi-vitamins should suffice....don't over do it......good health to you... :0
Question: What is the best Vitamin B complex on the market? I recently started taking vitamin B-50 complex (Life Brand), but I seem to be having an allergic reaction to it. Does anyone know what the best vitamin company is, that does not have extras (such as herbs, etc.) as fillers? I do not care what the cost is.
Also, where can I buy them?
I only want vitamin B complete. (B-1, B-2, B-3, B-6,B-12)
Thanks!
I have taken vitamin B in the past and no reactions. I can not remember the company though.
Answer: since you have taken it in the past, try to find a brand that does not have artificial colors in them. Many times, that is the issue with allergy and pill taking. My sister spent 3 trips to the ER with severe hives and allergic reaction all because the brand of Tylenol she was taking had this red dye all over the outside of the capsule.

I read that red raspberry leaf extracts can cause miscarriage?
Answer: I have tried the progesterone cream thing. Yes it needs to be prescribed... I just went through a miscarriage in Feb and I am trying to strengthen my uterus. I am taking Red Raspberry leaf extracts and also Nettle leaf extracts. I did plenty of research and they seem to work well.. Don't know for sure yet, will tell you on my next pregnancy! Good luck... sounds like you are insanely TTC like me! God bless
Question: Does a vitamin B deficiency occur when smoking pot? Not only have I noticed that the detoxification cocktail is loaded with B vitamins almost exclusively, but the effects of smoking pot are similar to the effects of a vitamin b deficiency. Taking vitamin B can cure many of the side-effects of pot smoking. Are these things related? Does anyone else think this to be more than coincidence?
Answer: Welli am NO medical doctor,.. nor have i done any research, however... i would assume that YES... it does. Whenever i have smoked and not taking my dialy vitamins, or exercised that day,.. i get a mild panic attack. Why? Well exercising and the vitamins raise your B levels, which also sustain a good hormone and energy level. SO i would assume.. yes, yes it does.
Question: How much Vitamin B should you take to stop hair loss? When I look at those multivitamins, they always have a high amount of the Vitamin B complex but I read that depending on which Vitamin B, you should take only 6-50 mg per day.
Answer: The treatment of hair loss is depend upon the causes of hair loss.
And as for as concern with the quantity of vitamin B if you gain it by natural food than it is not so dangerous but if you gain it by some artificial source like medicine and supplement than take care about the quantity of it.
