Question: A presentation on the sociological aspect of Ayurveda as an alternative to medicine? I'm trying to find a focus for a presentation I have to give in about six weeks time. Basically, I need to find a sociology-based focus on Ayurveda as an alternative to medicine. My seminar leader suggested that I could focus on WHY people lean towards Ayurveda but was wondering if you guys might have some sort of suggestion? Anything would be helpful! Many thanks!
Answer: Ayurveda is a naturopathic system of medicine that is practiced in India and based on the principles derived from the ancient Hindu scriptures - known as the Vedas.
Vedas are the most sacred of Hinduism (scriptures) and the oldest of Sanskirt dated as far back as the 1500 or 2000 BC.
Summary: Veda has four main by-laws. The practice includes hymns and praises ~ prayers and sacrifice ~ tunes and chants ~ lastly the Veda - officiating priests at the sacrifice.
Because we are viewed as a we are microcosmic representatives of the entire universe we must be in or close to balance with the environment and personal(inter) communication. With that our health is the natural end of the living in harmony with the environment. Diseases are viewed in a negative (dis-harmony in the Envir.) which will dictate a unique cure for every human because we are not the same in mind-body and spirit. Our "Doshas", will show what therapies are needed including diet, herbs, colors and sound. ** Where aromatherapy has been invented through medicated oils to the skin and massage, and meditation.
So, why do people lean towards this? It makes sense. We are in a society that are becoming more Spiritual than religious. With Spirituality includes holistic healing because it remedies the Mind~Spirit and Body. This is similar to the Kahuna - Hawaiian medicine. You will find that majority of holistic healing have a common which is "Meditation" which is based on posiitive affirmations and energy.
Organized religions do not practice nor are they offered. Our western medicine are fast relief for ailments, which work for some but it does not clear the negative enviroment in which they occupy,( work,school,home,Etc..).
With holistic healing you first must be "healed" within before it can show externally.
I hope this makes sense. Good question too.

Question: What do you think of Ayurveda in treating cancer? How much can a person rely on Ayurvedic Practitioners in India. Do you think Ayurveda is taught in a systematic manner in India. Are these so called doctors competent to treat any disease.
Individuals sitting in remote places which are difficult to reach claim that they can cure cancer. They don't tell what is the medicine or the herb. Is there any secret.
What do you think of them?
I wish to start a debate on this and would like people to join.
Answer: You probably won't like what I am going to say, but I come from a perspective that cancer is a killer. It is swift and can be horrific. There is also very very little time to sit around and experiment with treatment to 'see if it works'. Because cancer kills we have concentrated strictly on treatments that can be documented as far as efficiacy and safety are concerned. There is no sense in wasting precious time on a treatment if there is no documentation or literature that will back up effectiveness. And further . . even when we were faced with the prospect that the treatment was not stopping the progression of disease we felt that a clinical trial was the best way to go . . not because it might 'cure' our son . . but because it would document critical information about the disease and what would worked or did not work during that treatment. Documentation, literature, research, and clinical trials are the only way to finding a 'cure' for cancer . . let's cut out the 'guessing' and the theories and go with factual evidence.
Despite several different types of herbs or spices that may complement cancer treatments . . and despite research . . Ayurveda medicine still cannot provide any reliable documented evidence that it 'cures' or even has any significant impact on the treatment of cancer.
(this is not the same thing as people thinking or believing that it does . . there is no scientific evidence that it does).
Question: Where is the best place to get Ayurveda treatment? I have hear of Ayurveda being a credible alternative to western medicine for many ailments - but where is the best place to go for quality treatment?
Answer: I believe the question was not about the merits of Ayurveda, but where to seek treatment.
Ayurveda is taken very seriously in India where it originates from, it is backed by the government and in fact many universities there offer accredited courses in Ayurvedic medicine.
Naturally India is the best place to go for Ayurvedic treatment, but I'm not sure how tightly it is regulated, so I would stay away from the lower cost facilities unless you are privy to some local knowledge - ie. you have friends or family there who can guide you.
I have found one facility which is highly recommended and that is SOUKYA in Bangalore. It is a holistic wellness center, operated by Dr. Issac Mathai M.D.(Hom), M.R.C.H.(Lond) and his wife, Suja Issac M.Sc.,M.Phil.(Foods & Nutrition) and I believe they have a team of very experienced Ayurveda doctors. You can find more information on the facility here: http://www.soukya.com/
Good luck with your searching and Ayurveda is well worth trying, depending of course on the disease or condition you are wishing to heal.
Question: What is difference between ghanvati and tablet in Ayurveda? What is difference between ghanvati and tablet in Ayurveda?
sometimes same content is available as ghanvati and also avialble as ghanvati.. please guide.
Answer: Since you haven't gotten an answer yet, I'll toss in my 2 cents.
After searching on Yahoo, it seems that Ghanvati is a specific type of tablet, maybe even akin to what we consider a lozenge in the U.S. To have a better description, I would suggest talking to an Ayurvedic shop or practitioner to get more specific details of the differences. Good luck and I hope I helped!
Question: What should I eat according to Ayurveda? I completed a test and it says that I am predominantly Vata, with some Pitta and some Kapha (normally).Yet for the present time it tells me that Kapha has become the dominating dosha. I recently suffered from stress. Also my skin is very dry. So what should I eat according to Ayurveda?
Answer: I did a quick search on Yahoo and found a couple good sites that have a variety of advice about being primarily Vata. Take a look at http://www.holisticonline.com/ayurveda/ayv-vata-food-plan.htm and http://www.living-foods.com/articles/ayurveda.html
If you want a more restrictive list that would more address your dry skin, you may want to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner, but I would also pointing out that eating ONLY those foods can be detrimental to your health over time and those should only really be strictly eaten to balance your doshas. Good luck and I hope I helped!
Question: Is it true that some foods have cold and some have hot properties like ancient Indian Ayurveda believes? Is there any truth in the belief that foods have cold or hot properties that affect our body (system) accordingly? This concept is widely used in Indian Ayurveda system.
As a child growing in India I have seen this concept used in everyday life. We used to eat certain foods in certain seasons etc. I see evidence of the same being used in one way or another in Western countries also, but it has no scientific acknowledgment. Would like to understand if there is any substance to this concept or it's just a myth.
Answer: Yes, many of them do. Most cultural beliefs about things in the physical world tend to come from some basis of the aspects of that thing. That's a really vague statement, I know, but ancient beliefs about certain plants or certain types of foods that stayed throughout time usually stick because they seem to have some benefit from it and modern science is verifying quite a few of those aspects (eg. Cayenne is a hot food, heats up your system, increases circulation, etc).
Many times, it may be something that's obvious like spicy foods being "hot" (anyone who tastes it will know that), but there are many other aspects that apply as well. The traditions like this stick because people noticed that certain foods gave certain reactions so they kept using them for those reasons ("hot" foods during the winter) because they worked and that "tradition" was passed on.
Granted, there are some beliefs that may be entirely based on religion and tradition (eg. saying certain words before a meal or having to recite certain phrases at certain times), but those based on physical aspects of things tend to have something behind them (eg. eating a certain plant will give you energy, this plant will make you warm up, etc). I hope this helps!
Question: How much can ayurveda treatment help in disc prolapse and cord compression? My mother's MRI shows disc protrusion & prolapse of C5, L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 & S1, and weakness of left leg. currently she is undergoing ayurveda treatment and consultation from orthoneuro surgeons.
Answer: no, ayurveda can not help in prolapsed disc. only exercise or surgery could help... prolapsed disc is the gap between the disc bones which can not go with ayurveda treatment. follow what doctors advice you. if exercise wont help then only doctors will advice to go for surgery.
good luck !!!

Question: Does ayurveda correlate between conceiving and nose piercing? I heard that in ayurveda there is correlation between fertility of women and nose piercing. Can anyone confirm on this?
Answer: well there is one if you go by Ayurveda.Piercing of left nose helps in increasing fertility and child birth.Thats the reason it was praticed alot, rather was mandatory in older days.In those days it was not possible to know whether you are susceotible to infertility or not so all females were subjected to nose piercing.
Even one study in indian university which took 600 subjects with 300 controls,it was shown that those with infertility responded in 9 months to left nose pircing(27%) compared to 8% in control group. At 3 years time infertle woman concieved in 78% compared with 14% in control.
There is little information at wikipedia regarding nose piercing and fertility.
Question: Are there any argumentative questions about Ayurveda medicines that i can base my research on? i need to do a short research paper on ayurveda medicines and my lecturer wants it to be argumentative. Do you have any suggestions that might work out with the lecturer? Another thing is that i cannot compare it with other types of medicines.
Answer: So, they won't let you get off easy with "why Ayurveda is better (or has less side effects) than drugs", huh? Hmm...
How about "Why are people so negative towards Ayurvedic medicines?" and discuss some of the negative ideas people have about Ayurveda and shoot them down with facts. You could cover how long they've been safely used, point out the millions that use them with great benefits, and reference any of the many studies about the safety and effectiveness of the herbs. Although personally, I'd avoid the ones that were done by pharmaceutical companies or similar organizations because those tend to be faulty, set up for a negative result, or focus on what will make the herb look bad than unbiased truth... I've seen a few studies that were sponsored by a subsidiary of a drug company, so you may have to look closer behind the research if you do that. Good luck on the research paper!
Question: Is yoga and Ayurveda denounced or advocated in the western world? Have opinions changed towards modern medicine and Ayurveda altered over the past few decades?
Answer: Well, you are really asking two different questions.
Yoga is very much advocated in the western world-- many have chosen to take part in yoga because of it's well known health benefits. Everyone from general practitioners to your next door neighbor have agreed that Yoga is incredibly beneficial to your health.
Ayurveda, on the other hand, is something few Westerners understand. If your are interested in Ayurveda, please get a book by a known Ayurveda specialist. To just break it down for you shortly, Ayurveda involves discovering what Dosha you are (what body type, personality, etc.) and eating accordingly. For example, those of the Kapha Dosha are already of a sweet nature, so they should eat more bitter and astringent foods.
Ayurveda is advocated by some, denounced by others. Those who truly understand the health benefits of Ayurveda or who have actually studied it will, most likely, advocate it. However, some western doctors think that the limiting of food is a negative thing. It is up to you to make your own decision. As someone who does Bikram yoga three times a week and always eats in an Ayurvedic fashion, I suggest you try it out for two months. Then we'll see if you're a convert!
Happy eating(;
