Gaba
Question: What is the relationship between the neurotransmitter GABA and depression? Is it a positive or negative correlation? As in what does an increase in GABA cause? elevated mood or worse depression?
In other words, is GABA an excitatory or an inhibitory neurotransmitter?
Answer: It is both excitatory and inhibitory depending on which nerve cluster and structures you are examining. In adults it is mostly inhibitory. Although increasing GABA would likely decrease depression.
Question: Is it safe to take a low dosage of vicodin and Gaba together to control Anxiety/ shaky voice? I have a speech for school, and i have some vicodin and gaba and wanted to know if it is safe if i take a low dose of vicodin and Gaba to control my anxiety and nervousness?
Answer: these drugs are for pain, not anxiety. You may just end up really sedating yourself and messing up your speech. Don't be nervous man, it is just a speech. If you have prepared, you will be fine. The nervousness goes away after a minute or so of being up there. In my experience, ask the audience a question early on in the speech. Having a chance to stop and let THEM respond to YOU takes a lot of anxiety away. It takes the attention off you momentarily. Good luck.
Question: Will the supplement GABA help with my sexual performance anxiety? I can't get an erection with a girl because I get very nervous. Will GABA calm me down and allow me to get an erection?
Answer: The jury's still out on this one. It is supposed to relax you - but it might relax you a little too much. Each person's chemical makeup is different. How old are you? What's your lifestyle like? No smoking, no beer/ale, no booze, no drugs. - Any or all of these things can cause one not to have an erection. This may be something you just have to learn to deal with on your own. If you have genuine concerns, see a doctor for evaluation.
Question: Does caffeine have any effect on neurotransmitters, specifically GABA or dopamine? Is it a GABA or dopamine agonist/antagonist?
Thanks.
Answer: I vaguely remember a project I did for a class about adenosine receptors, and I know caffeine works on them somehow... might be worth investigating.
EDIT: Okay, I dug out my Psychopharmacology book, and it looks like caffeine blocks GABAa receptors, stimulates Ca2+ release within cells, and blocks the A1 and A2a receptors for adenosine.

Answer: I wouldn't recommend taking GA BA while you are pregnant but what are you wanting to use it for?

Question: Is anybody giving GABA supplement to a child to suppress hyperactivity? What is dosage will be best for 3 yr (40 pound) todler to manage hyperactivity?
Answer: That could be dangerous to do so. Why don't you just give your child fish oil instead. Eye-Q do a range suitable for young children. Fish oil has been shown to help with hyperactivity and concentration in children.....do some research.

But do remember that it is perfectly normal for a toddler to be very active. They need the extra activity for development .....physical and mental....for muscle and bone development and also for key brain development.

Question: Can I take GABA into Thailand and China in my check-in baggage? In a powder form? GABA is an amino acid that can be used for bodybuilding. It's full name is Gamma Amino Butyric Acid.
It is in a powder form. I am worried the customs will think it's an illegal drug and they will confiscate it.
What do you think?
Answer: To be honest, from my experience in those countries or at least China which I went to for 9 months, I don't think you would have a problem getting it in BUT I wouldn't take the risk anyway. You know why? Because they don't speak the language and it is VERY daunting if you have to answer questions. The security at these places is terrifying! to say the least. They aren't like Australia, they are trained to not smile, not be friendly or personable. It is a daunting enough experience entering into these countries at the airports anyway let alone being held for having something suspicious in your bag and then having to explain yourself. I personally would not take the risk. How long are you going for? If it is a short time then maybe it's best not to worry about taking it. If it is a long time I would suggest you contact the dept of foreign affairs and get some more expert advice if it really is important to you that you have this stuff with you.
:) all the best anyway
Question: Has anyone tried the supplement GABA to treat ADHD and did it work?
Thanks Thready. You are right the meds do work but my son could not handle the side effects of the stimulants and the non stimulant Straterra. He had terrible motor tics that were agonizing to him. His new doctor has us trying GABA this week.
Answer: GABA, also known as gamma-aminobutyric acid, is a supplement used by bodybuilders as well as by others for a variety of reasons.Essentially then, the idea of GABA for bodybuilders, is that it induces a deep and extra anabolic sleep for your body to make repairs and build muscle. For this reason it is best taken before bed. GABA also has another side effect, leading to a tingling feeling in the face and limbs and relaxed muscles.GABA was recently banned from the UK so is only available for those in the US.
A number of parents have tried other natural remedies as an alternative to psycho-stimulants and other drugs due to various short & long term side effects they are attributed to. Small trials have found some agents, such as oral flower essence, Ginkgo biloba, Panax ginseng, and melatonin may possibly have benefits for ADHD.
There are homeopathic remedies which effectively target some of the disruptive symptoms of ADHD and allow the child to concentrate more easily. Natural remedies should be considered as a first step ahead of prescription psychiatric drugs. When combined with strong dietary control, counseling as necessary, and a healthy lifestyle, natural remedies have been show to be effective in helping to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD.

Question: what is the half life of a gaba supplement? i.e how long it takes to wear off, and then how long it takes to leave the system completely? at 1000mg. expertise needed as i can't find the answer anywhere. thanks.
Answer: I apologize but this is the only answer I have for you from my experience:
Pure GABA 500mg capsule taken at bedtime: effects dissipate 8 hours later feel completely normal. (I do not know if a blood test would show any residue)
750mg GABA: after 8 hours of sleep woke up groggy and feeling drugged out.
1000mg would have been way too much for me. Would totally prevent me from waking for over 12hrs at least.
I hope this points you to the right direction until you find exactly what you're looking for.
have a great evening!
Question: What is the danger of taking GABA for anxiety? any danger to the brain? a friend of mine gives her teenage daughter 4 tablets of gaba in the morning, 2 at midday and 2 at night. is this safe? can it do damage to the brain? her daughter has been twice in icu with suspected meningitis and at another time with suspected encephylitis. now it is found that her daughter just suffers from spasms in the neck due to her streneous dancing concerts at an art/drama school. her daughter complains of constant severe head aches and stiff neck. can it be the GABA she is taking at age 14???
Answer: A doctor should be prescribing medication for a 14-year old, not her mother. GABA is a large molecule and cannot pass the blood/brain barrier when taken orally. It is usually used to build muscle in athletes.
The headaches & stiff neck might be related to the large dose of GABA, but it more possibly are signs of untreated anxiety.
Please tell her mom consult a qualified doctor, not alternative therapies that are not proven & don't have enough clinical data to show they are effective.
Question: Whats the difference between Benzos and Herbal GABA? Whats the difference and what is more effective, Benzos such as clonazepam which raise GABA levels, OR GABA, the supplement which can be purchased at health food stores without prescription?, heres a link from a site where you can buy GABA
http://astronutrition.com/amino-acids-5/now-gaba-powder-112/
Answer: Benzodiazepines operate by binding to what we call an 'allosteric' site on the GABA-A receptor. When they stick to this spot, it makes it easier for GABA to attach to the receptor, so it opens more often.
Taking direct GABA does absolutely nothing. There's an enzyme in the stomach that breaks it down very rapidly to prevent you from eating something that will interfere with such an important brain system. It's like eating adrenaline, it's broken down before it ever gets anywhere near your blood. If you were to inject said GABA substance (which is probably pristine given most 'natural medicine's' spectacular hygienic manufacturing processes) into your spine, it would probably do something. But as it stands, it cannot make it into the brain to do anything.
Question: Whats the difference between Gabapentin and Gaba powder supplement? Gabapentin/Neurontin compared to Gamma Aminobutyric Acid powder bought without prescription?
Answer: GABA is a non-essential amino acid/neurotransmitter found in the human brain and eyes. It regulates brain and nerve cell activity by stopping neurons from firing, and therefore, preventing overstimulation. GABA, taken as a supplement, is supposed to exert a calming, relaxing, and anti-anxiety effect on the body. However, taken orally, it is completely ineffective because it doesn't reach the brain, and therefore, has absolutely none of the effect it claims to have.
Neurontin (gabapentin) is structurally related to GABA, but the medication has no effect on GABA in the brain (doesn't inhibit its reuptake, or increase levels) and it is not converted into GABA either. Neurontin is an anticonvulsant, and also has analgesic properties.
Question: If I take a gaba supplement, valerian root, or st johns wort before going to work tonight what will happen? I hate work and was thinking maybe one of these will help me be happier.
Answer: Why dont you just take a good vit B supplement and perhaps Vit D to make you feel happier.. much simpler solution.. really.. B12 does wonders for a snarky mood...
Question: Where can I find naturally fermented GABA? It's really good for anxiety and such, and it's healthier instead of like xanax or what not. But I cannot find it in like GNC or anything.
